  • Characterization of Inverted Slot Line for Travelling Wave Optical Modulator

    The inverted slot line (ISL) has been propoaed for millimeter-wave LiNbO3 optical modulator. It is simple in structure, and capable of achieving the perfect velocity matching between carrier and modulating waves. The excellent performance of the ISL optical modulator has been demonstrated at 100 GHz, and the extension into the 50 GHz range is being expected. This paper addresses the analysis of the ISL based on the spectral domain approach. The major results obtained here are the demonstration of the perfect velocity matching not only at 10 GHz but also at 50 GHz, and the characterization of the ISL in terms of effective refractive index, characteristic impedance, overlap integral factor and transmission loss. The depth of optical phase modulation is also estimated at 50 GHz to show a promising performance in the millimeter-wave frequency range. The effective refractive index and the characteristic impedance are found to be theoretically predictable, but the field profile, the overlap integral factor and the transmission loss are not necessarily in good agreement with measurements. As a result of analysis, it can be concluded that the Y-cut substrate is superior to the Z-cut substrate in the following respects: 1. Coupling with the surface wave mode hardly occurs near the operating frequency range. 2. The perfect velocity matching can be attained with a larger spacing between the electrode and the ground plane. 3. The transmission loss is smaller. 4. The field intensity and the voerlap integral factor do not seem to be much deteriorated in the actual ISL.

  • Method of Refining Knowledge in Oriental Medicine by Sample Cases

    In general, the work on developing an expert system has relied on domain experts to provide all domain-specific knowledge. The method for acquiring knowledge directly from experts is inadequate in oriental medicine because it is hard to find an appropriate expert and the development cost becomes too high. Therefore, we have developed two effective methods for acquiring knowledge indirectly from sample cases. One is to refine a constructed knowledge base by using sample cases. The other is to train a neural network by using sample cases. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods, we have implemented two prototype systems; the Oriental Medicine Expert System (OMES) and the Oriental Medicine Neural Network (OMNN). These systems have been compared with the system with the knowledge base built directly by domain experts (OLDS). Among these systems, OMES are considered to be superior to other systems in terms of performances, development costs, and practicalness. In this paper, we present our methods, and describe our experimental and comparison results.

    A new method for interpolating boundary function values and first derivatives of a triangle is presented. This method has a relatively simple construction and involves no compatibility constraints. The polynomial precision set of the interpolation function constructed includes all the cubic polynomial and less. The testing results show that the surface produced by the proposed method is better than the ones by weighted combination schemes in both of the fairness and preciseness.

    The research for rational quadratic Bézier curve and its applications for generating conics and curve-fitting have been reported in some papers. But rational cubic Bézier curves, for the complexity of computation of the weight parameters and the difficulty of the shape control, have very rarely been applied up to the present. In this letter, we proposed a new method to generate a rational cubic Bézier curve. For a given point S (assuming the curve pass it) and a given value of the intermediate variable t in the point, we can compute the weight parameters of the rational cubic Bézier curve according to the relation of the control polygon and the given point, and can generate the curve. Then we explained the relation among shape of curve, given point S and intermediate varisble t. As the samples of using the method, we showed the generation of the gear-shape curve, symmetrical curve and spindle-shape curve, etc.. Finally, we discuss the application of this method for curve-fitting.

    This paper was written for LSI engineers in order to demonstrate the effect of optical interconnections in LSIs to improve both the speed and power performances of 0.5 and 0.2 µm CMOS microprocessors. The feasibilities and problems regarding new micronsize optoelectronic devices as well as associated electronics are discussed. Actual circuit structures clocks and bus lines used for optical interconnection are discussed. Newly designed optical interconnections and the speed power performances are compared with those of the original electrical interconnection systems.

    Recent progress in high-speed semiconductor devices and integrated circuits (ICs) has outpaced the conventional measuring and testing instruments. With advent of ultrashort-pulse laser technology, the electro-optic sampling (EOS) technique based on the Pockels effect has become the most promising solution way of overcoming the frequency limit, whose bandwidth is approaching a terahertz. This paper reviews recent progress on the research of the EOS technniques for measuring ultrahigh-speed electronic devices and ICs. It describes both the principle of the EOS and the key technologies used for noncontact probing of ICs. Internal-node measurements of state-of-the-art high-speed ICs are also presented.

    Fabrication of 0.2 to 0.3 µm features is vital for future ultralarge scale integration devices. An area of particular concern is whether optical lithography can delineate such feature sizes, i.e., less than the exposure wavelength. The use of a phase shift mask is one of the most effective means of improving resolution in optical lithography. This technology basically makes use of the interference between light transmitting through adjacent apertures of the mask. Various types of phase shift masks and their imaging characteristics are discussed and compared with conventional normal transmission masks. To apply these masks effectively to practical patterns, a phase shifter pattern design tool and mask repair method must be established. The phase shifting technology offers a potential to fabricate 0.3 µm features by using the current i-line stepper, and 0.2 µm features by using excimer laser stepper.

    A precise method for determining AlGaAs/GaAs HBT large-signal circuit parameters is presented. In this method, the parameters are extracted from noise parameters and small-signal S-parameters measured under various bias conditions. The measured noise parameters are fitted to the calculated noise parameters derived from an approximation of Hawkins' equations applied to the macroscopic equivalent circuit. The small-signal S-parameters help to determine the large-signal circuit parameters. The derived large-signal parameters were used to design an HBT oscillator. The simulated results using these parameters were in good agreement with the fabricated device performance.

    The diffraction of a plane electromagnetic wave by a parallel-plate waveguide cavity with a thick planar termination is rigorously analyzed for both the E and the H polarization using the Wiener-Hopf technique. Introducing the Fourier transform for the unknown scattered field and applying boundary conditions in the transform domain, the problem is formulated in terms of the simultaneous Wiener-Hopf equations, which are solved exactly in a formal sense via the factorization and decomposition procedure. Since the formal solution involves an infinite number of unknowns and branch-cut integrals with unknown integrands, approximation procedures based on rigorous asymptotics are further presented to yield the approximate solution convenient for numerical computations. The scattered field inside and outside the cavity is evaluated by taking the inverse Fourier transform and applying the saddle point method. Representative numerical examples of the monostatic and bistatic radar cross sections are presented for various physical parameters, and the scattering characteristics of the cavity are discussed in detail.

    An integrated optoelectronic multiplier based on GaAs optoelectronic device technology, is proposed. The key element is an optoelectronic half-adder logic gate, which is composed of only two GaAs metal-semiconductor-metal photodetectors (MSM-PD's). It operates with a single clock delay, less than 100 ps. An optoelectronic full-adder and a multiplier are also composed of half-adders and surface-emitting laser-diodes (SEL's). Cascadable gates with optical interconnections are integrated. Utilizing improved device fabrication technology, an optoelectronic high-speed multiplier with a minimum number of gates will be realized in LSI.

    We indicate the existence of optimum expanded mode field diameters in thermally-diffused expanded core (TEC) fiber. The optimum ranges under our experimental conditions were from 14µm to 18µm for both 1.3µm-single-mode fiber and 1.55µm-dispersion-shifted fiber. By applying the TEC fiber fabricated in our experimental conditions to a multifiber connector, the connection loss can be reduced to less than 0.2dB without improving fiber and connector ferrule fabrication accuracy.

    Theoretical and actual experimental investigations are made on a Loop Antenna System (LAS) consisting of N-gap loop antennas. A general formula for the LAS response to an external EM field is derived by using both the method of moments and techniques for transmission-line analysis. Numerical evaluation verifies that the LAS has favorable characteristics, such as invariable response within a wide frequency range. In addition, differences between the LAS method and the present open-field method in the results of measurement are evaluated. It should be noted that the LAS gives a much lower output for an electrical source than for a magnetic source, even if both sources produce the same value with the open-field method. It is concluded that conversion factors for the results from the LAS method to the open-field method strongly depend on the orientation of the source as well as its characteristics. Consequently, new conversion factors are proposed to obtain practical EMI measurements.

  • Predicting the Next Utterance Linguistic Expressions Using Contextual Information

    A context-sensitive method to predict linguistic expressions in the next utterance in inquiry dialogues is proposed. First, information of the next utterance, the utterance type, the main action and the discourse entities, can be grasped using a dialogue interpretation model. Secondly, focusing in particular on dialogue situations in context, a domain-dependent knowledge-base for literal usage of both noun phrases and verb phrases is developed. Finally, a strategy to make a set of linguistic expressions which are derived from semantic concepts consisting of appropriate expressions can be used to select the correct candidate from the speech recognition output. In this paper, some of the processes are particularly examined in which sets of polite expressions, vocatives, compound nominal phrases, verbal phrases, and intention expressions, which are common in telephone inquiry dialogue, are created.

    Progress of speech recognition based on the hidden Markov model has made it possible to realize man-machine dialogue systems capable of operating in real time. In spite of considerable effort, however, few systems have been successfully developed because of the lack of appropriate dialogue models. This paper reports on some of technology necessary to develop a dialogue system with which one can converse comfortably. The emphasis is placed on the following three points: how a human converses with a machine; how errors of speech recognition can be recovered through conversation; and what it means for a machine to be cooperative. We examine the first problem by investigating dialogues between human speakers, and dialogues between a human speaker and a simulated machine. As a consideration in the design of dialogue control, we discuss the relation between efficiency and cooperativeness of dialogue, the method for confirming what the machine has recognized, and dynamic adaptation of the machine. Thirdly, we review the research on the friendliness of a natural language interface, mainly concerning the exchange of initiative, corrective and suggestive answers, and indirect questions. Lastly, we describe briefly the current state of the art in speech recognition and synthesis, and suggest what should be done for acceptance of spontaneous speech and production of a voice suitable to the output of a dialogue system.

    In this paper, we investigate the round complexity of zero-knowledge interactive proof systems of possession of knowledge, and mainly show that if a relation R has a three move blackbox simulation zero-knowledge interactive proof system of possession of knowledge, then there exists a probabilistic polynomial time algorithm that on input x{0,1}*, outputs y such that (x,y)R with overwhelming probability if xdom R, and outputs "" with probability 1 if x dom R. The result above can not be generalized to zero-knowledge interactive proof systems of possession of knowledge with more than four moves, because it is known that there exists a "four" move blackbox simulation perfect zero-knowledge interactive proof system of possession of knowledge for a nontrivial relation R.

    In 1990, Menezes, Okamoto and Vanstone proposed a method that reduces EDLP to DLP, which gave an impact on the security of cryptosystems based on EDLP. But this reducing is valid only when Weil pairing can be defined over the m-torsion group which includes the base point of EDLP. If an elliptic curve is ordinary, there exists EDLP to which we cannot apply the reducing. In this paper, we investigate the condition for which this reducing is invalid.

  • A Linguistic Procedure for an Extension Number Guidance System

    This paper describes the linguistic procedure of our speech dialogue system. The procedure is composed of two processes, syntactic analysis using a finite state network, and discourse analysis using a plan recognition model. The finite state network is compiled from regular grammar. The regular grammar is described in order to accept sentences with various styles, for example ellipsis and inversion. The regular grammar is automatically generated from the skeleton of the grammar. The discourse analysis module understands the utterance, generates the next question for users and also predicts words which will be in the next utterance. For an extension number guidance task, we obtained correct recognition results for 93% of input sentences without word prediction and for 98% if prediction results include proper words.

  • A Complementary Optical Interconnection for Inter-Chip Networks

    A new optical interconnection system suitable for high-speed ICs using a novel complementary optical interconnection technique has been developed. This system uses paired light sources and photodetectors for optical complementary operation, and greatly lowers the power consumption compared with conventional systems. Analyses and experimental results indicate that this system can operate in the gigabit range, and reduces power consumption to less than 20% of that in conventional systems at 1 Gb/s.
