The spatial distribution of the electric field in the low to high frequency bands radiated from printed circuit board (PCB) should be estimated continuously from near to far field. The characteristic of the electric field distribution is analyzed by the FDTD-multiple analysis space (FDTD-MAS) method, which can analyze from near to far field continuously, and compared with measured results. Since the analyzed electric field distribution is good agreement with measured results, it is suggested that the continuous distribution for electric field from near to far field can be calculated by the FDTD-MAS method. The electric field at low frequency is larger than that at high frequency within 1 m.

In this letter, a hybrid selection combining (SC) and maximal ratio receive combining (MRRC) technique is proposed for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with multiple receive antennas. The proposed technique still uses multiple receive antennas, but it has just a single RF front-end and a single baseband demodulator. In comparison with the OFDM system with no diversity, we can achieve superior gain irrespective of bandwidth efficiency, and also in comparison with the MRRC OFDM, we can achieve better gain under the bandwidth efficiency of 3 bps/Hz at the bit error rate of 10-6.

This paper presents a simple method to determine weights of single carrier multiple input multiple output (MIMO) broadband communication systems adopting tapped delay line (TDL) structure in receiver side for the effective communication under frequency selective fading (FSF) environment. First, assuming the perfect knowledge of the channel matrix in both arrays, an iterative design method of transmitter and receiver weights is proposed. In this approach, both weights are determined alternately to maximize signal to noise plus interference ratio (SINR) by fixing the weight of one side while optimizing the other, and this operation is repeated until SINR converges. Next, considering the case of uninformed transmitter, maximum SINR design method of MIMO system is extended for space time block coding (STBC) scheme working under FSF. Through computer simulations, it is demonstrated that the proposed schemes achieves higher SINR than conventional method with delay-less structure, particularly for the fading with long duration.

This paper presents a fast switching CMOS frequency synthesizer with a new coarse tuning method for PHS applications. To achieve the fast lock-time and the low phase noise performance, an efficient bandwidth control scheme is proposed. To change the bandwidth, the charge pump current and the loop filter zero resistor should be changed. Charge pump up/down current mismatches are compensated with the current mismatch compensation block. The proposed coarse tuning method selects the optimal tuning capacitances of the LC-VCO to optimize the phase noise and the lock-time. The measured lock-time is about 20 µs and the phase noise is -121 dBc/ at 600 kHz offset. This chip is fabricated with 0.25 µm CMOS technology, and the die area is 0.7 mm2.1mm. The power consumption is 54 mW at 2.7 V supply voltage.

In this letter, we propose a partial minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) with successive interference cancellation (PMMSESIC) method in frequency domain to mitigate ICI caused by channel variation. Each detection, the proposed method detects the symbol with the largest received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) among all the undetected symbols, using an MMSE detector that considers only the interference of several neithborhood subcarriers. Analysis and simulations show that it outperforms the MMSE method at relatively high Eb/N0 and its performance is close to the MMSE with successive detection (MMSESD) method in relatively low Doppler frequency region.

For alleviating the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), the OFDM combined with time division multiplexing (TDM) using frequency-domain equalization (FDE) was proposed. In this paper, the theoretical bit error rate (BER) analysis of the OFDM/TDM in a frequency-selective fading channel is presented. The conditional BER expression is derived, based on a Gaussian approximation of the inter-symbol interference (ISI) arising from channel frequency-selectivity, for the given set of channel gains. Various FDE techniques as in multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA), i.e., zero forcing (ZF), maximum ratio combining (MRC) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) criteria are considered. The average BER performance is evaluated by Monte-Carlo numerical computation method using the derived conditional BER expression.

By applying the differential space-time block code (DSTBC) to wireless multicarrier transmission, Diggavi et al. were the first to propose the two-input-multiple-output (2IMO) differentially space-time-time block coded OFDM (TT-OFDM) system. In this paper, we propose three novel differentially transmit-diversity block coded OFDM (DTDBC-OFDM) systems, namely, the FT-, FF-, and TF-OFDM systems. For instance, the TF-OFDM stands for the differentially space-time-frequency block coded OFDM. Moreover, the noncoherent maximum-likelihood sequence detector (NSD), and its three special cases, namely, the noncoherent one-shot detector, the linearly predictive decision-feedback (DF) detector, and the linearly predictive Viterbi receiver are incorporated to the 2IMO DTDBC-OFDM systems. Furthermore, a simple closed-form BER expression for the systems utilizing the noncoherent one-shot detector in the time-varying multipath Rayleigh fading channels is given. Numerical results have revealed that 2IMO DTDBC-OFDM systems employing the noncoherent one-shot detector can obtain significant performance improvement. However, when few antennas are available, the implementation of the linearly predictive DF detector or the linearly predictive Viterbi receiver is necessary for achieving better performance.

We fabricated Josephson vortex flow transistors (JVFTs) with a parallel array of Josephson junctions that were prepared using c-axis-oriented 100-nm-thick YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin films grown on 24bicrystal MgO (100) substrates. We observed clear modulations of the critical current and the flow voltage with DC current input to the control line that was inductively coupled to the array of junctions. From the results, we estimated the parameters of the device, e.g., the mutual inductance and the self-inductance, and calculated the operation frequency at which the device potentially exhibited these parameters. Moreover, the current gain and the transresistance were evaluated and found to be 0.5 and 0.15 Ω, respectively. In addition, we observed the high-frequency responses of the JVFT to the input AC current of the sine wave or the square pulse wave. A clear oscillation of the output voltage could be observed with a 1 MHz sine wave and 250 kHz square pulse wave. We also discussed the feasibility of higher frequency operation by using it as an input interface for a single flux quantum (SFQ) logic circuit.

A false lock free delay-locked loop(DLL) achieving a wide frequency operation and a fine timing resolution is presented. A novel false lock detection technique is proposed to solve the trade-off between a wide frequency range and false locks. This technique enables a fine timing resolution even at a high frequency. In addition, the duty cycle of the input clock is not required to be 50%. This technique is applied to the DLLs in analog front-end LSIs of digital camera systems, with a range of 465 MHz (16) and a timing resolution of 9(40 stages).

In AMS/OFDM systems, a base station controls the modulation level of each subcarrier with feedback information (FBI), and then, adaptive modulated packets are transmitted from the base station to the mobile station. In this case, the mobile station requires modulation level information (MLI) to demodulate the received packet. The MLI is generally transmitted as a data symbol, so the throughput is degraded. To overcome this problem and increase the total throughput, in this paper, we propose superimposed frequency symbol based adaptive OFDM with frequency spreading and equalization. In the proposed system, each S/P transformed signal is spread by orthogonal spreading codes and combined. This means that each subcarrier holds several superimposed S/P transformed signals with the same power rate. In this case, the frequency-selective faded subcarriers obtain the same power rate for each S/P transformed signal. Therefore, the detected signals also obtain the same SINR, and as a result, we can assign the same modulation level for each frequency symbol spreading block. Hence, the proposed system requires only one piece of FBI and MLI for each frequency symbol spreading block, as compared with conventional adaptive OFDM.

An FRPA (frequency reuse power allocation) technique by employing the frequency reuse notion as a strategy for overcoming the ICI (intercell interference) and maintaining the QoS (quality of service) at the cell boundary is described for broadband cellular networks. In the scheme, the total bandwidth is divided into sub-bands and two different power levels are then allocated to sub-bands based on the frequency reuse for forward-link cell planning. In order to prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a Monte Carlo simulation was performed based on the Chernoff upper bound. The simulation shows that this technique can achieve a high channel throughput while maintaining the required QoS at the cell boundary.

A parallel notch filter (PNF) for eliminating a sinusoidal signal whose frequency and phase are unknown, has been proposed previously. The PNF achieves both fast convergence and high estimation accuracy when the step-size for adaptation is appropriately determined. However, there has been no discussion of how to determine the appropriate step-size. In this paper, we derive the convergence condition on the step-size, and propose an adaptive algorithm with variable step-size so that convergence of the PNF is automatically satisfied. Moreover, we present a new filtering structure of the PNF that increases the convergence speed while keeping the estimation accuracy. We also derive a variable step-size scheme for the new PNF to guarantee the convergence. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The performance of a feedback-type adaptive array antenna (AAA) system placed only at a base station (BS) in an FDD/DS-CDMA system remains insufficiently clear. We evaluate the performance of this system by considering the effect of a rake receiver, spacing distance between antennas, the maximum Doppler frequency (fd), and control delay time (Td) on BER performance. In this system, the mobile station (MS) determines optimum weights of antenna elements and sends them back to BS as feedback information. We assume that the optimum weights are not quantized. Thereby, we estimate the performance degradation of 3GPP transmit diversity system, where the feedback information is quantized using a few bits. Computer simulation results show that the rake receiver achieves better BER performance because of the time diversity effect with rake receiver. The AAA with a wide antenna spacing gives high diversity gain for the received signals. For a high value of fd Td, BER performance becomes worse because weighting factors cannot follow the changing speed of channel characteristics. The degradation in performance of a 3GPP system is clarified.

Space-frequency transmit diversity (SFTD) and space-code transmit diversity (SCTD), which are both based on space-time block codes (STBC), were applied to time-direction spreading and two-dimensional spreading orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing code-division multiplexing (OFDM-CDM) systems, and the transmission performances were compared by computer simulation. SFTD is designed for space and two adjacent subcarriers whereas SCTD is designed for space and two distinct Walsh-Hadamard (WH) codes. The simulation results show that SCTD applied to time-direction spreading OFDM-CDM was superior to SFTD because frequency selectivity distorted STBC's orthogonality between sub-carriers in SFTD. In contrast, when they were applied to two-dimensional spreading OFDM-CDM, SFTD was superior to SCTD when the number of WH codes belonging to the same mother-code group is small because the frequency diversity provided by SFTD surpassed that provided by SCTD. In addition, both SFTD and SCTD provide high tolerance to large Doppler spread. It can be therefore concluded that both SCTD and SFTD can be used in the same frame by code-multiplexing according to their suitability to physical channels. SCTD is suitable for transmitting high-rate data via time-direction spreading, whereas SFTD is suitable for transmitting control data via two-dimensional spreading.

With the growing demand for mobile communications, multicarrier (MC) schemes are receiving an increasing amount of attention, primarily because they handle frequency selective channels better than ordinary single-carrier schemes. However, despite offering several advantages, MC systems have certain weak points. One is their high sensitivity to interchannel interference (ICI). The influence of Doppler shift and ICI are the focus of this paper. Newly proposed B3G/4G systems are developed for data transmission rates higher than those of the IEEE 801.11. It is then necessary that the bandwidth of the subcarrier be small. Moreover, for a higher carrier frequency and mobile speed, the influence of the Doppler shift will be large; therefore, the influence of ICI becomes severer. Using a Markov chain approach, we synthesized a turbo equalizer (TE) that minimizes ICI when interference affects the arbitrary number M of adjacent subchannels. This approach shows the complexity of the proposed algorithm exhibits linear growth with respect to M and independence with respect to the total number of subchannels in the multicarrier system. The proposed ICI cancellation scheme can also be effective in the case of multiple Doppler frequency offsets. This makes the proposed approach attractive for practical implementations.

This paper addresses several relevant issues in detection process of a reverse link multicarrier code division multiple access system with frequency offset. Due to the presence of frequency offsets, power of a group of subcarriers is spread to all the available subcarriers. In order to collect all the scattered signal power, we propose a two stages receiver. First stage of the proposed receiver performs maximum ratio combining. Following from the first stage, multiple access interference is suppressed in the second stage. We propose various multiple access interference suppression techniques, having different complexity and performance. Simulation results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed receiver. We also investigate the performance of 2 major subcarrier assignment schemes, namely continuous subcarrier assignment scheme and interleaved subcarrier assignment scheme, in both ideal independent fading channel and practical correlated fading channel.
