  • Exact Minimum-Width Transistor Placement for Dual and Non-dual CMOS Cells

    This paper proposes flat and hierarchical approaches for generating a minimum-width transistor placement of CMOS cells in presence of non-dual P and N type transistors. Our approaches are the first exact method which can be applied to CMOS cells with any types of structure. Non-dual CMOS cells occupy a major part of an industrial standard-cell library. To generate the exact minimum-width transistor placement of non-dual CMOS cells, we formulate the transistor placement problem into Boolean Satisfiability (SAT) problem considering the P and N type transistors individually. Using the proposed method, the transistor placement problem of any types of CMOS cells can be solved exactly. In addition, the experimental results show that our flat approach generates smaller width placement for 29 out of 103 dual cells than that of the conventional method. Our hierarchical approach reduces the runtimes drastically. Although this approach has possibility to generate wider placements than that of the flat approach, the experimental results show that the width of only 3 out of 147 cells solved by our hierarchical approach are larger than that of the flat approach.

    This paper quantitatively analyzes thermal gradient of SoC and proposes a thermal flattening procedure. First, the impact of dominant parameters, such as area occupancy of memory/logic block, power density, and floorplan on thermal gradient are studied quantitatively. Temperature difference is also evaluated from timing and reliability standpoints. Important results obtained here are 1) the maximum temperature difference increases with higher memory area occupancy and 2) the difference is very floorplan sensitive. Then, we propose a procedure to amend thermal gradient. A slight floorplan modification using the proposed procedure improves on-chip thermal gradient significantly.

  • High Quality and Low Complexity Speech Analysis/Synthesis Based on Sinusoidal Representation

    Sinusoidal representation has been widely applied to speech modification, low bit rate speech and audio coding. Usually, speech signal is analyzed and synthesized using the overlap-add algorithm or the peak-picking algorithm. But the overlap-add algorithm is well known for high computational complexity and the peak-picking algorithm cannot track the transient and syllabic variation well. In this letter, both algorithms are applied to speech analysis/synthesis. Peaks are picked in the curve of power spectral density for speech signal; the frequencies corresponding to these peaks are arranged according to the descending orders of their corresponding power spectral densities. These frequencies are regarded as the candidate frequencies to determine the corresponding amplitudes and initial phases according to the least mean square error criterion. The summation of the extracted sinusoidal components is used to successively approach the original speech signal. The results show that the proposed algorithm can track the transient and syllabic variation and can attain the good synthesized speech signal with low computational complexity.

    NAT-PT and DSTM are becoming more widespread as de-facto standards for IPv6 dominant network deployment. But few researchers have empirically evaluated their performance aspects. In this paper, we compared the performance of NAT-PT and DSTM with IPv4-only and IPv6-only networks on user applications using metrics such as throughput, CPU utilization, round-trip time, and connect/request/response transaction rate.

    This paper proposes a genetically inspired adaptive clustering algorithm for numerical and categorical data sets. To this end, unique encoding method and fitness functions are developed. The algorithm automatically discovers the actual number of clusters and efficiently performs clustering without unduly compromising cluster-purity. Moreover, it outperforms existing clustering algorithms.

  • Cubic-Spline Expansion with GA for a Partially Immersed Conducting Cylinder

    This paper presents a computational approach to the imaging of a partially immersed conducting cylinder. Both cubic-spline method and trigonometric series for shape description are used and compared. Based on the boundary condition and the recorded scattered field, a set of nonlinear integral equations is derived and the imaging problem is reformulated into an optimization problem. The genetic algorithm is employed to find out the global extreme solution of the object function. It is found that the shape described by Fourier series can be reconstructed by cubic-spline. In the opposite case, the shape described by cubic-spline and reconstructed by Fourier series expansion will fail. Even when the initial guess is far away from the exact one, the cubic-spline expansion and genetic algorithm can avoid the local extreme and converge to a global extreme solution. Numerical results are given to show that the shape description by using cubic-spline method is much better than that by the Fourier series. In addition, the effect of Gaussian noise on the reconstruction is investigated.

  • CMOS RF Band-Pass Filter Design Using the High Quality Active Inductor

    A high quality-factor of active inductor has been implemented by using the 0.18 µm 1P6M CMOS technologies in this work. By adding a feedback resistance and a regulated gain stage transistor into the conventional cascade-grounded approach, the quality-factor and performance of CMOS active inductor can be improved. This novel active inductor demonstrated a maximum quality-factor of 540 and a 3.2 nH inductance at 4.3 GHz, where the self-resonant frequency was 5.4 GHz. An active CMOS bandpass filter was also fabricated including this tunable high quality factor active inductor, performing an insertion loss of 0.2 dB and a return loss more than 32 dB with a tuning range from 3.45 GHz to 3.6 GHz. The input IP3 was -2.4 dBm, and the noise figure was 14.1 dB with a 28 mW dc power consumption.

    In this paper, we present a game of dice that combines multi-party communication with a tangible interface. The game has been used as a testbed to study typical conversational behavior patterns in interactions between human users and synthetic agents. In particular, we were interested in the question to what extent the interaction with the agent can be considered as natural. As an evaluation criterion, we propose to investigate whether the communicative behaviors of humans differ when conversing with an agent as opposed to conversing with other humans.

    This letter introduces a modified multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) signal with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). From the presented results, we can see that the modified MB-OFDM signal can be implemented with low PAPR. When MB-OFDM signals is equipped with a partial transmit sequence (PTS) approach, the PAPR of the modified MB-OFDM signals using two partial transmit sequences is almost the same to that of the ordinary MB-OFDM signals using four partial transmit sequences.

    A novel microstrip dual-mode bandpass filter with ultra-broad stopband is proposed using the aperture-backed stepped-impedance ring resonator (SIRR). This SIRR consists of low-impedance strips in the four bended corners and high-impedance strips in the four straight sides. With the cross-shaped aperture placed on the ground underneath the SIRR, the upper stopband is significantly broadened. In particular, the 2nd resonant frequency of this proposed SIRR is confirmed to exceed the four times of its 1st counterpart. The dual-mode filter with the passband of 7.5% at 1.59 GHz is then designed and implemented, demonstrating the measured stopband of 1.70-5.80 GHz and size reduction of 56.0%.

    A fast decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check codes is presented based on graph decomposition and two-way message passing schedule. Simulations show that the convergence speed of the proposed algorithm is about twice that of the conventional belief propagation algorithm.

    This letter describes a permutation attack (PA) to the subsampling-based watermarking scheme where the high correlations between subimages obtained by subsampling the original image are used for watermark embedding. We show that the correlations can also be easily used to attack the watermarking scheme through a simple permutation procedure, while the quality degradation of attacked watermarked image is visually acceptable. Experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed attack algorithm.

  • Joint Channel Parameter Estimation and Signal Detection for Downlink MIMO DS-CDMA Systems

    This paper proposes two space-time joint channel parameter estimation and signal detection algorithms for downlink DS-CDMA systems with multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless multipath fading channels. The proposed algorithms initially use the space-time MUSIC to estimate the DOA-delays of the multipath channel. Based on these estimated DOA-delays, a space-time channel decoupler is developed to decompose the multipath downlink channel into a set of independent parallel subchannels. The fading amplitudes of the multipath can then be estimated from the eigen space of the output of the space-time channel decoupler. With these estimated channel parameters, signal detection is carried out by a maximal ratio combiner on a pathwise basis. Computer simulations show that the proposed algorithms outperform the conventional space-time RAKE receiver while having the similar performance compared with the space-time minimum mean square error receiver.

  • An LCD Backlight-Module Driver Using a New Multi-Lamp Current Sharing Technique

    This paper proposes a backlight module which drives multiple cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) with a current mirror technique to equalize the driving current for each lamp. We first adopt a half-bridge parallel-resonant inverter as the main circuit and use a single-input, multiple-output transformer to drive the multi-CCFLs. Next, we introduce current-mirror circuits to create a new current-sharing circuit, in which its current reference node and the parallel-connected multi-load nodes are used to accurately equalize all CCFLs' driving current. This will balance each lamp's brightness and, consequently, improve the picture display quality of the related liquid crystal display (LCD). This paper details the design concept for each component value with the assistance of an actual design example. The results of the example are examined with its actual measurements, which consequently verify the correctness of the proposed control strategy.

    It is often observed that the operation of the digitally controlled dc-dc power converter becomes unstable when the relatively large integral coefficient is used to extend the regulation range of the output voltage to handle variations in the input voltage and load. This paper presents a novel digital controller with static model reference for switching dc-dc power converters to improve the performance characteristics and discusses its design-oriented analysis in the steady-state characteristics. It is clarified theoretically and experimentally that using the static model reference, the wide regulation range of the output voltage to handle variations in the input voltage and load current can be achieved with the appropriate small integral coefficient in the digital P-I-D controller. Therefore, since the integral coefficient is selected to cover the maximum instantaneous variation value of the static reference model, the integral coefficient is small and the operation is always stable.

    In 2002, Zhu et al. proposed a password-based authenticated key exchange protocol based on RSA. Zhu et al. claimed the protocol is efficient for the low-power devices in wireless networks. Unfortunately, Yeh et al. pointed out that Zhu et al.'s protocol was weak against undetectable on-line password guessing attack. Not only that, Zhu et al.'s protocol does not achieve explicit key authentication. At the same time, Yeh et al. proposed an improved method. However, in this paper, we shall point out that Yeh et al.'s improvement is vulnerable to the off-line password guessing attack. At the same time, we shall propose a solution to resist the above attack.

    The next-generation wireless networks will bring users with Software Defined Radio (SDR) terminals seamless mobility and ubiquitous computing through heterogeneous networks. This paper proposes a soft-prioritization based system selection algorithm performed by SDR terminal and investigates the effectiveness of the soft-prioritization based system selection by using a concrete simulation model. To maximize the quality of service (QoS), wireless communication systems are prioritized on the basis of criteria for system selection such as data rate, channel quality and cost, and should be dynamically changed. However, frequent inter-system handovers based on hard-prioritization are undesirable in view of interrupting and dropping, particularly for real-time traffic and managing channel capacities. Wireless communication systems are softly prioritized in the soft-prioritization based system selection algorithm, and therefore inter-system handovers between systems with the same priority aren't initiated. To elucidate the validity of the soft-prioritization based system selection algorithm, a system simulation model consisting of five wireless communication systems is employed. Simulation results confirm that the soft-prioritization system selection algorithm offers higher performance in terms of the number of inter-system handovers and throughput of best effort traffic.

    A novel scheme for a multi-band power amplifier (PA) that employs a low-loss reconfigurable matching network is presented and discussed. The matching network basically consists of a cascade of single-stub tuning circuits, in which each stub is connected to a transmission line via a Single-Pole-Single-Throw (SPST) switch. By controlling the on/off status of each switch, the matching network works as a band-switchable matching network. Based on a detailed analysis of the influence of non-ideal switches in the matching network, we conceived a new design perspective for the reconfigurable matching network that achieves low loss. A 900/1900-MHz dual-band, 1 W class PA is newly designed following the new design perspective, and fabricated with microelectro mechanical system (MEMS) SPST switches. Owing to the new design and sufficient characteristics of the MEMS switches, the dual-band PA achieves over 60% of the maximum power-added efficiency with an output power for each band exceeding 30 dBm. These results are comparable to the estimated results for a single-band PA. This shows that the proposed scheme provides a band-switchable highly efficient PA that has superior performance compared to the conventional multi-band PA that has a complex structure.

    Driving methods for TFT-OLEDs are explained with their features and classified from the viewpoints of grayscale methods and uniformizing methods. This classification leads us to a novel proposal using time ratio grayscale and current uniformization. This driving method maintains current uniformity and simultaneously overcomes charging shortage of the pixel circuit for low grayscale levels and current variation due to the shift of operating points. Tolerance toward degraded characteristics, linearity of grayscale and luminance uniformity against degraded characteristics are confirmed using circuit simulation.
