In a dense wireless network, concurrent transmissions normally increase interference and reduce network performance. In such an environment, however, there is a possibility that a frame can be decoded correctly if its receive power is higher than that of another frame by some predefined value (i.e., the so-called capture effect). As a result, the unfairness of throughputs among network nodes likely occurs in that context. This research aims to quantify the throughput performance of only one access point Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) with dense network nodes in the presence of the capture effect. We first propose a new analytical model, which can express not only WLANs' throughputs but also WLANs' unfairness transmission. The validity of the proposed model is confirmed by simulation results. Second, relying on the model, we present a novel Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol-based solution, which realizes throughput fairness between network nodes induced by the capture effect.

Based on the concept of polynomial operators, this paper explores generalized direct-form II structure and its state-space realization for two-dimensional separable-denominator digital filters of order (m, n) where a structure with 3(m+n)+mn+1 fixed parameters plus m+n free parameters is introduced and analyzed. An l2-scaling method utilizing different coupling coefficients at different branch nodes to avoid overflow is presented. Expressions of evaluating the roundoff noise for the filter structure as well as its state-space realization are derived and investigated. The availability of the m+n free parameters is shown to be beneficial as the roundoff noise measures can be minimized with respect to these free parameters by means of an exhaustive search over a set with finite number of candidate elements. The important role these parameters can play in the endeavors of roundoff noise reduction is demonstrated by numerical experiments.

In this paper, we explore the security of single-key Even-Mansour ciphers against key-recovery attacks. First, we introduce a simple key-recovery attack using key relations on an n-bit r-round single-key Even-Mansour cipher (r-SEM). This attack is feasible with queries of DTr=O(2rn) and $2^{ rac{2r}{r + 1}n}$ memory accesses, which is $2^{ rac{1}{r + 1}n}$ times smaller than the previous generic attacks on r-SEM, where D and T are the number of queries to the encryption function EK and the internal permutation P, respectively. Next, we further reduce the time complexity of the key recovery attack on 2-SEM by a start-in-the-middle approach. This is the first attack that is more efficient than an exhaustive key search while keeping the query bound of DT2=O(22n). Finally, we leverage the start-in-the-middle approach to directly improve the previous attacks on 2-SEM by Dinur et al., which exploit t-way collisions of the underlying function. Our improved attacks do not keep the bound of DT2=O(22n), but are the most time-efficient attacks among the existing ones. For n=64, 128 and 256, our attack is feasible with the time complexity of about $2^{n} cdot rac{1}{2 n}$ in the chosen-plaintext model, while Dinur et al.'s attack requires $2^{n} cdot rac{{ m log}(n)}{ n} $ in the known-plaintext model.

In radio channel measurements and modeling, directional scanning via highly directive antennas is the most popular method to obtain angular channel characteristics to develop and evaluate advanced wireless systems for high frequency band use. However, it is often insufficient for ray-/cluster-level characterizations because the angular resolution of the measured data is limited by the angular sampling interval over a given scanning angle range and antenna half power beamwidth. This study proposes the sub-grid CLEAN algorithm, a novel technique for high-resolution multipath component (MPC) extraction from the multi-dimensional power image, so called double-directional angular delay power spectrum. This technique can successfully extract the MPCs by using the multi-dimensional power image. Simulation and measurements showed that the proposed technique could extract MPCs for ray-/cluster-level characterizations and channel modeling. Further, applying the proposed method to the data captured at 58.5GHz in an atrium entrance hall environment which is an indoor hotspot access scenario in the fifth generation mobile system, the multipath clusters and corresponding scattering processes were identified.

This work aims to determine the propensity of password creation through the lens of language spheres. To this end, we consider four different countries, each with a different culture/language: China/Chinese, United Kingdom (UK) and India/English, and Japan/Japanese. We first employ a user study to verify whether language and culture are reflected in password creation. We found that users in India, Japan, and the UK prefer to create their passwords from base words, and the kinds of words they are incorporated into passwords vary between countries. We then test whether the findings obtained through the user study are reflected in a corpus of leaked passwords. We found that users in China and Japan prefer dates, while users in India, Japan, and the UK prefer names. We also found that cultural words (e.g., “sakura” in Japan and “football” in the UK) are frequently used to create passwords. Finally, we demonstrate that the knowledge on the linguistic background of targeted users can be exploited to increase the speed of the password guessing process.

This paper demonstrates how to achieve simulation-based strong attribute hiding against adaptive adversaries for predicate encryption (PE) schemes supporting expressive predicate families under standard computational assumptions in bilinear groups. Our main result is a simulation-based adaptively strongly partially-hiding PE (PHPE) scheme for predicates computing arithmetic branching programs (ABP) on public attributes, followed by an inner-product predicate on private attributes. This simultaneously generalizes attribute-based encryption (ABE) for boolean formulas and ABP's as well as strongly attribute-hiding PE schemes for inner products. The proposed scheme is proven secure for any a priori bounded number of ciphertexts and an unbounded (polynomial) number of decryption keys, which is the best possible in the simulation-based adaptive security framework. This directly implies that our construction also achieves indistinguishability-based strongly partially-hiding security against adversaries requesting an unbounded (polynomial) number of ciphertexts and decryption keys. The security of the proposed scheme is derived under (asymmetric version of) the well-studied decisional linear (DLIN) assumption. Our work resolves an open problem posed by Wee in TCC 2017, where his result was limited to the semi-adaptive setting. Moreover, our result advances the current state of the art in both the fields of simulation-based and indistinguishability-based strongly attribute-hiding PE schemes. Our main technical contribution lies in extending the strong attribute hiding methodology of Okamoto and Takashima [EUROCRYPT 2012, ASIACRYPT 2012] to the framework of simulation-based security and beyond inner products.

This paper addresses the problem of selecting a significant subset of candidate features to use for multiple linear regression. Bertsimas et al. [5] recently proposed the discrete first-order (DFO) algorithm to efficiently find near-optimal solutions to this problem. However, this algorithm is unable to escape from locally optimal solutions. To resolve this, we propose a stochastic discrete first-order (SDFO) algorithm for feature subset selection. In this algorithm, random perturbations are added to a sequence of candidate solutions as a means to escape from locally optimal solutions, which broadens the range of discoverable solutions. Moreover, we derive the optimal step size in the gradient-descent direction to accelerate convergence of the algorithm. We also make effective use of the L2-regularization term to improve the predictive performance of a resultant subset regression model. The simulation results demonstrate that our algorithm substantially outperforms the original DFO algorithm. Our algorithm was superior in predictive performance to lasso and forward stepwise selection as well.

When moving through space, we have to consider the route to the destination and gather real-world information to check that we are following this route correctly. In this study, we define spatial movement skill as this ability to associate information like maps and memory with real-world objects like signs and buildings. Without adequate spatial movement skills, people are liable to experience difficulties such as going around in circles and getting lost. Alleviating this problem requires better spatial movement skills, but few studies have considered how this can be achieved or supported, and we have found no research into how the improvement of these skills can be supported in practice. Since spatial cognition is always necessary for spatial movement, our aim in this study is to develop a spatial movement skill training system. To this end, we first overviewed the use of knowledge gained from the research literature on spatial cognition. From these related studies, we systematically summarized issues and challenges related to spatial movement and the stages of spatial information processing, and created a new learning model for the improvement of spatial movement skills. Then, based on this model, we developed a system that uses position information to support the improvement of spatial movement skills. Initial experiments with this system confirmed that its use promotes recognition from a global viewpoint to the current location and direction, resulting in the formation of a cognitive map, which suggests that it has an effect on spatial movement skills.

The eyes are continuously fluctuating during fixation. These fluctuations are called fixational eye movements. Fixational eye movements consist of tremors, microsaccades, and ocular drifts. Fixational eye movements aid our vision by shaping spatial-temporal characteristics. Here, it is known that photoreceptors, the first input layer of the retinal network, have a spatially non-uniform cell alignment called the cone mosaic. The roles of fixational eye movements are being gradually uncovered; however, the effects of the cone mosaic are not considered. Here we constructed a large-scale visual system model to explore the effect of the cone mosaic on the visual signal processing associated with fixational eye movements. The visual system model consisted of a brainstem, eye optics, and photoreceptors. In the simulation, we focused on the roles of fixational eye movements on signal processing with sparse sampling by photoreceptors given their spatially non-uniform mosaic. To analyze quantitatively the effect of fixational eye movements, the capacity of information processing in the simulated photoreceptor responses was evaluated by information rate. We confirmed that the information rate by sparse sampling due to the cone mosaic was increased with fixational eye movements. We also confirmed that the increase of the information rate was derived from the increase of the responses for the edges of objects. These results suggest that visual information is already enhanced at the level of the photoreceptors by fixational eye movements.

The concrete quality of supporting layer in ballastless track is important for the safe operation of a high-speed railway (HSR). However, the supporting layer is covered by the upper track slab and the functional layer, and it is difficult to detect concealed defects inside the supporting layer. To solve this problem, a method of elastic wave velocity imaging is proposed to analyze the concrete quality. First, the propagation path of the elastic wave in the supporting layer is analyzed, and a head-wave arrival-time (HWAT) extraction method based on the wavelet spectrum correlation analysis (WSCA) is proposed. Then, a grid model is established to analyze the relationships among the grid wave velocity, travel route, and travel time. A loss function based on the total variation is constructed, and an inverse method is applied to evaluate the elastic wave velocity in the supporting layer. Finally, simulation and field experiments are conducted to verify the suppression of noise signals and the accuracy of an inverse imaging for the elastic wave velocity estimation. The results show that the WSCA analysis could extract the HWAT efficiently, and the inverse imaging method could accurately estimate wave velocity in the supporting layer.

Android occupies a very large market share in the field of mobile devices, and quantities of applications are created everyday allowing users to easily use them. However, privacy leaks on Android terminals may result in serious losses to businesses and individuals. Current permission model cannot effectively prevent privacy data leakage. In this paper, we find a way to protect privacy data on Android terminals from the perspective of privacy information propagation by porting the concept of contextual integrity to the realm of privacy protection. We propose a computational model of contextual integrity suiting for Android platform and design a privacy protection system based on the model. The system consists of an online phase and offline phase; the main function of online phase is to computing the value of distribution norm and making privacy decisions, while the main function of offline phase is to create a classification model that can calculate the value of the appropriateness norm. Based on the 6 million permission requests records along with 2.3 million runtime contextual records collected by dynamic analysis, we build the system and verify its feasibility. Experiment shows that the accuracy of offline classifier reaches up to 0.94. The experiment of the overall system feasibility illustrates that 70% location data requests, 84% phone data requests and 46% storage requests etc., violate the contextual integrity.

Full duplex (FD) communication can potentially double the throughput of a point-to-point link in wireless communication. Additionally, FD communication can mitigate the hidden node collision problem. The MAC protocols for FD communications are classified into two types; synchronous FD MAC and asynchronous one. Though the synchronous FD MAC mitigates hidden node collisions by using control frame, overhead duration for each data frame transmission may be a bottleneck for the networks. On the other hand, the asynchronous FD MAC mitigates the hidden node collisions by FD communication. However, it wastes more time due to transmission failure than synchronous FD MAC. Clarifying the effect of two major FD MAC types on networks requires a quantitative evaluation of the effectiveness of these protocols in networks with hidden node collisions. This paper proposes performance analysis of FD MAC protocols for wireless local area networks with hidden node collisions. Through the proposed analytical model, the saturated throughputs in FD WLANs with both asynchronous and synchronous FD MAC for any number of STAs and any payload size can be obtained.

Due to most of the existing graph repartitioning methods are known for poor efficiency in distributed environments. In this paper, we introduce a new graph repartitioning method with two phases in distributed environments. In the first phase, a local method is designed to identify all the potential candidate vertices that should be moved to the other partitions at once in each partition locally. In the second phase, a streaming graph processing model is adopted to reassign the candidate vertices to achieve lightweight graph repartitioning. During the reassignment of the vertex, we propose an objective function to balance both the load balance and the number of crossing edges among the distributed partitions. The experimental results with a large set of real word and synthetic graph datasets show that the communication cost can be reduced by nearly 1 to 2 orders of magnitude compared with the existing methods.

Locally repairable codes (LRCs) with locality r and availability t are a class of codes which can recover data from erasures by accessing other t disjoint repair groups, that every group contain at most r other code symbols. This letter will investigate constructions of LRCs derived from cyclic codes and generalized quadrangle. On the one hand, two classes of cyclic LRC with given locality m-1 and availability em are proposed via trace function. Our LRCs have the same locality, availability, minimum distance and code rate, but have short length and low dimension. On the other hand, an LRC with $(2,(p+1)lfloor rac{s}{2} floor)$ is presented based on sets of points in PG(k, q) which form generalized quadrangles with order (s, p). For k=3, 4, 5, LRCs with r=2 and different t are determined.

This paper describes a novel approach to flexible control of speaker characteristics using tensor representation of multiple Gaussian mixture models (GMM). In voice conversion studies, realization of conversion from/to an arbitrary speaker's voice is one of the important objectives. For this purpose, eigenvoice conversion (EVC) based on an eigenvoice GMM (EV-GMM) was proposed. In the EVC, a speaker space is constructed based on GMM supervectors which are high-dimensional vectors derived by concatenating the mean vectors of each of the speaker GMMs. In the speaker space, each speaker is represented by a small number of weight parameters of eigen-supervectors. In this paper, we revisit construction of the speaker space by introducing the tensor factor analysis of training data set. In our approach, each speaker is represented as a matrix of which the row and the column respectively correspond to the dimension of the mean vector and the Gaussian component. The speaker space is derived by the tensor factor analysis of the set of the matrices. Our approach can solve an inherent problem of supervector representation, and it improves the performance of voice conversion. In addition, in this paper, effects of speaker adaptive training before factorization are also investigated. Experimental results of one-to-many voice conversion demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Outlier detection in a data set is very important in performing proper data mining. In this paper, we propose a method for efficiently detecting outliers by performing cluster analysis using the DS algorithm improved from the k-means algorithm. This method is simpler to detect outliers than traditional methods, and these detected outliers can quantitatively indicate “the degree of outlier”. Using this method, we detect abnormal trading days from OHLCs for S&P500 and FTSA, which are typical and world-wide stock indexes, from the beginning of 2005 to the end of 2015. They are defined as non-steady trading days, and the conditions for becoming the non-steady markets are mined as new knowledge. Applying the mined knowledge to OHLCs from the beginning of 2016 to the end of 2018, we can predict the non-steady trading days during that period. By verifying the predicted content, we show the fact that the appropriate knowledge has been successfully mined and show the effectiveness of the outlier detection method proposed in this paper. Furthermore, we mutually reference and comparatively analyze the results of applying this method to multiple stock indexes. This analyzes possible to visualize when and where social and economic impacts occur and how they propagate through the earth. This is one of the new applications using this method.

This letter studies the physical layer security of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled multicasting system, where a UAV serves as a mobile transmitter to send a common confidential message to a group of legitimate users under the existence of multiple eavesdroppers. The worst situation in which each eavesdropper can wiretap all legitimate users is considered. We seek to maximize the average secrecy rate by jointly optimizing the UAV's transmit power and trajectory over a given flight period. The resulting optimization problem is nonconvex and intractable to solve. To circumvent the nonconvexity, we propose an iterative algorithm to approximate the solution based on the alternating optimization and successive convex approximation methods. Simulation results validate the convergence and effectiveness of our proposed algorithm.

This paper proposes a method for heatmapping people who are involved in a group activity. Such people grouping is useful for understanding group activities. In prior work, people grouping is performed based on simple inflexible rules and schemes (e.g., based on proximity among people and with models representing only a constant number of people). In addition, several previous grouping methods require the results of action recognition for individual people, which may include erroneous results. On the other hand, our proposed heatmapping method can group any number of people who dynamically change their deployment. Our method can work independently of individual action recognition. A deep network for our proposed method consists of two input streams (i.e., RGB and human bounding-box images). This network outputs a heatmap representing pixelwise confidence values of the people grouping. Extensive exploration of appropriate parameters was conducted in order to optimize the input bounding-box images. As a result, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for heatmapping people involved in group activities.

This paper proposes a sampling strategy for bandlimited graph signals over perturbed graph, in which we assume the edge between any pair of the nodes may be deleted randomly. Considering the mismatch between the true graph and the presumed graph, we derive the mean square error (MSE) of the reconstructed bandlimited graph signals. To minimize the MSE, we propose a greedy-based algorithm to obtain the optimal sampling set. Furthermore, we use Neumann series to avoid the pseudo-inverse computing. An efficient algorithm with low-complexity is thus proposed. Finally, numerical results show the superiority of our proposed algorithms over the other existing algorithms.

When we collect vital data from exercisers by putting wireless sensor nodes to them, the reliability of the wireless data collection is dependent on the position of node on the body of exerciser, therefore, in order to determine the suitable body position, it is essential to evaluate the data collection performances by changing the body positions of nodes in experiments involving human subjects. However, their fair comparison is problematic, because the experiments have no repeatability, that is, we cannot evaluate the performances for multiple body positions in an experiment at the same time. In this paper, we predict the performances by a software network simulator. Using two main functions such as a channel state function and a mobility function, the network simulator can repeatedly generate the same channel and mobility conditions for nodes. Numerical result obtained by the network simulator shows that when collecting vital data from twenty two footballers in a game, among three body position such as waist, forearm and calf, the forearm position gives the highest data collection rate and the predicted data collection rates agree well with the ones obtained by an experiment involving real subjects.
