  • Horizontal Partition for Scalable Control in Software-Defined Data Center Networks

    Distributed control plane architecture has been employed in software-defined data center networks to improve the scalability of control plane. However, since the flow space is partitioned by assigning switches to different controllers, the network topology is also partitioned and the rule setup process has to invoke multiple controllers. Besides, the control load balancing based on switch migration is heavyweight. In this paper, we propose a lightweight load partition method which decouples the flow space from the network topology. The flow space is partitioned with hosts rather than switches as carriers, which supports fine-grained and lightweight load balancing. Moreover, the switches are no longer needed to be assigned to different controllers and we keep all of them controlled by each controller, thus each flow request can be processed by exactly one controller in a centralized style. Evaluations show that our scheme reduces rule setup costs and achieves lightweight load balancing.

    In this paper, we propose the first identity-based dynamic multi-cast key distribution (ID-DMKD) protocol which is secure against maximum exposure of secret information (e.g., secret keys and session-specific randomness). In DMKD protocols, users share a common session key without revealing any information of the session key to the semi-honest server, and can join/leave to/from the group at any time even after establishing the session key. Most of the known DMKD protocols are insecure if some secret information is exposed. Recently, an exposure resilient DMKD protocol was introduced, however, each user must manage his/her certificate by using the public-key infrastructure. We solve this problem by constructing the DMKD protocol authenticated by user's ID (i.e., without certificate). We introduce a formal security definition for ID-DMKD by extending the previous definition for DMKD. We must carefully consider exposure of the server's static secret key in the ID-DMKD setting because exposure of the server's static secret key causes exposure of all users' static secret keys. We prove that our protocol is secure in our security model in the standard model. Another advantage of our protocol is scalability: communication and computation costs of each user are independent from the number of users. Furthermore, we show how to extend our protocol to achieve non-interactive join by using certificateless encryption. Such an extension is useful in applications that the group members frequently change like group chat services.

    The fifth generation (5G) system using millimeter waves is considered for application to high traffic areas with a dense population of pedestrians. In such an environment, the effects of shadowing and scattering of radio waves by human bodies (HBs) on propagation channels cannot be ignored. In this paper, we clarify based on measurement the characteristics of waves scattered by the HB for typical non-line-of-sight scenarios in street canyon environments. In these scenarios, there are street intersections with pedestrians, and the angles that are formed by the transmission point, HB, and reception point are nearly equal to 90 degrees. We use a wide-band channel sounder for the 67-GHz band with a 1-GHz bandwidth and horn antennas in the measurements. The distance parameter between antennas and the HB is changed in the measurements. Moreover, the direction of the HB is changed from 0 to 360 degrees. The evaluation results show that the radar cross section (RCS) of the HB fluctuates randomly over the range of approximately 20dB. Moreover, the distribution of the RCS of the HB is a Gaussian distribution with a mean value of -9.4dBsm and the standard deviation of 4.2dBsm.

  • A Ranking-Based Text Matching Approach for Plagiarism Detection

    This paper addresses the issue of text matching for plagiarism detection. This task aims at identifying the matching plagiarism segments in a pair of suspicious document and its plagiarism source document. All the time, heuristic-based methods are mainly utilized to resolve this problem. But the heuristics rely on the experts' experiences and fail to integrate more features to detect the high obfuscation plagiarism matches. In this paper, a statistical machine learning approach, named the Ranking-based Text Matching Approach for Plagiarism Detection, is proposed to deal with the issues of high obfuscation plagiarism detection. The plagiarism text matching is formalized as a ranking problem, and a pairwise learning to rank algorithm is exploited to identify the most probable plagiarism matches for a given suspicious segment. Especially, the Meteor evaluation metrics of machine translation are subsumed by the proposed method to capture the lexical and semantic text similarity. The proposed method is evaluated on PAN12 and PAN13 text alignment corpus of plagiarism detection and compared to the methods achieved the best performance in PAN12, PAN13 and PAN14. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves statistically significantly better performance than the baseline methods in all twelve document collections belonging to five different plagiarism categories. Especially at the PAN12 Artificial-high Obfuscation sub-corpus and PAN13 Summary Obfuscation plagiarism sub-corpus, the main evaluation metrics PlagDet of the proposed method are even 22% and 43% relative improvements than the baselines. Moreover, the efficiency of the proposed method is also better than that of baseline methods.

  • PdEr-Silicide Formation and Contact Resistivity Reduction to n-Si(100) Realized by Dopant Segregation Process

    In this paper, we have investigated the PdEr-silicide formation utilizing a developed PdEr-alloy target for sputtering, and evaluated the contact resistivity of PdEr-silicide layer formed on n-Si(100) by dopant segregation process for the first time. Pd2Si and ErSi2 have same hexagonal structure, while the Schottky barrier height for electron (Φbn) is different as 0.75 eV and 0.28 eV, respectively. A 20 nm-thick PdEr-alloy layer was deposited on the n-Si(100) substrates utilizing a developed PdEr-alloy target by the RF magnetron sputtering at room temperature. Then, 10 nm-thick TiN encapsulating layer was in-situ deposited at room temperature. Next, silicidation was carried out by the RTA at 500 for 5 min in N2/4.9%H2 followed by the selective etching. From the J-V characteristics of fabricated Schottky diode, qΦbn was reduced from 0.75 eV of Pd2Si to 0.43 eV of PdEr-silicide. Furthermore, 4.0x10-8Ωcm2 was extracted for the PdEr-silicide to n-Si(100) by the dopant segregation process.

  • Possibilities of Large Voltage Swing Hard-Type Oscillators Based on Series-Connected Resonant Tunneling Diodes

    Hard-type oscillators for ultrahigh frequency applications were proposed based on resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs) and a HEMT trigger circuit. The hard-type oscillators initiate oscillation only after external excitation. This is advantageous for suppressing the spurious oscillation in the bias line, which is one of the most significant problems in the RTD oscillators. We first investigated a series-connected circuit of a resistor and an RTD for constructing a hard-type oscillator. We carried out circuit simulation using the practical device parameters. It was demonstrated that the stable oscillation can be obtained for such oscillators. Next, we proposed to use series-connected RTDs for the gain block of the hard-type oscillators. The series circuits of RTDs show the negative differential resistance in very narrow regions, or no regions at all, which makes impossible to use such circuits for the conventional soft-type oscillators. However, with the trigger circuit, they can be used for hard-type oscillators. We confirmed the oscillation and the bias stability of these oscillators, and also demonstrated that the voltage swing can be easily increased by increasing the number of RTDs connected in series. This is promising method to overcome the power restriction of the RTD oscillators.

    Focusing on the defects of famous defogging algorithms for fog images based on the atmosphere scattering model, we find that it is necessary to obtain accurate transmission map that can reflect the real depths both in large depth and close range. And it is hard to tackle this with just one prior because of the differences between the large depth and close range in foggy images. Hence, we propose a novel prior that simplifies the solution of transmission map by transferring coefficient, called saturation prior. Then, under the Random Walk model, we constrain the transferring coefficient with the color attenuation prior that can obtain good transmission map in large depth regions. More importantly, we design a regularization weight to balance the influences of saturation prior and color attenuation prior to the transferring coefficient. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed defogging method outperforms the state-of-art image defogging methods based on single prior in terms of details restoring and color preserving.

  • Reviving Identification Scheme Based on Isomorphism of Polynomials with Two Secrets: a Refined Theoretical and Practical Analysis

    The isomorphism of polynomials with two secret (IP2S) problem is one candidate of computational assumptions for post-quantum cryptography. The idea of identification scheme based on IP2S is firstly introduced in 1996 by Patarin. However, the scheme was not described concretely enough and no more details are provided on how to transcribe the idea into a real-world implementation. Moreover, the security of the scheme has not been formally proven and the originally proposed security parameters are no longer secure based on the most recent research. In this paper, we propose a concrete identification scheme based on IP2S with the idea of Patarin as the starting point. We provide formal security proof of the proposed scheme against impersonation under passive attack, sequential active attack, and concurrent active attack. We also propose techniques to reduce the implementation cost such that we are able to cut the storage cost and average communication cost to an extent that under parameters for the standard 80-bit security, the scheme is implementable even on the lightweight devices in the current market.

    A rich and robust representation for scene characters plays a significant role in automatically understanding the text in images. In this letter, we focus on the issue of feature representation, and propose a novel encoding method named bilateral convolutional activations encoded with Fisher vectors (BCA-FV) for scene character recognition. Concretely, we first extract convolutional activation descriptors from convolutional maps and then build a bilateral convolutional activation map (BCAM) to capture the relationship between the convolutional activation response and the spatial structure information. Finally, in order to obtain the global feature representation, the BCAM is injected into FV to encode convolutional activation descriptors. Hence, the BCA-FV can effectively integrate the prominent features and spatial structure information for character representation. We verify our method on two widely used databases (ICDAR2003 and Chars74K), and the experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves better results than the state-of-the-art methods. In addition, we further validate the proposed BCA-FV on the “Pan+ChiPhoto” database for Chinese scene character recognition, and the experimental results show the good generalization ability of the proposed BCA-FV.

    The elastic optical network (EON) is a promising new optical technology that uses spectrum resources much more efficiently than does traditional wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). This paper focuses on the routing, modulation level, spectrum and transceiver allocation (RMSTA) problems of the EON. In contrast to previous works that consider only the routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) or routing, modulation level and spectrum allocation (RMSA) problems, we additionally consider the transceiver allocation problem. Because transceivers can be used to regenerate signals (by connecting two transceivers back-to-back) along a transmission path, different regeneration sites on a transmission path result in different spectrum and transceiver usage. Thus, the RMSTA problem is both more complex and more challenging than are the RSA and RMSA problems. To address this problem, we first propose an integer linear programming (ILP) model whose objective is to optimize the balance between spectrum usage and transceiver usage by tuning a weighting coefficient to minimize the cost of network operations. Then, we propose a novel virtual network-based heuristic algorithm to solve the problem and present the results of experiments on representative network topologies. The results verify that, compared to previous works, the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce both resource consumption and time complexity.

  • Room-Temperature Atomic Layer Deposition of SnO2 Using Tetramethyltin and Its Application to TFT Fabrication

    We report room-temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD) of SnO2 using tetramethyltin (TMT) as a precursor and plasma-excited humidified argon as an oxidizing gas and investigate the saturation behaviors of these gases on SnO2-covered Si prisms by IR absorption spectroscopy to determine optimal precursor/oxidizer injection conditions. TMT is demonstrated to adsorb on the SnO2 surface by reacting with surface OH groups, which are regenerated by oxidizing the TMT-saturated surface by plasma-excited humidified argon. We provide a detailed discussion of the growth mechanism. We also report the RT ALD application to the RT TFT fabrication.

    This paper presents a novel TV event detection method for automatically generating TV program digests by using Twitter data. Previous studies of TV program digest generation based on Twitter data have developed TV event detection methods that analyze the frequency time series of tweets that users made while watching a given TV program; however, in most of the previous studies, differences in how Twitter is used, e.g., sharing information versus conversing, have not been taken into consideration. Since these different types of Twitter data are lumped together into one category, it is difficult to detect highlight scenes of TV programs and correctly extract their content from the Twitter data. Therefore, this paper presents a highlight scene detection method to automatically generate TV program digests for TV programs based on Twitter data classified by Twitter user behavior. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, experiments using 49 soccer game TV programs were conducted.

    Performance based on multi-party discussion has been reported to be superior to that based on individuals. However, it is impossible that all participants simultaneously express opinions due to the time and space limitations in a large-scale discussion. In particular, only a few representative discussants and audiences can speak in conventional unidirectional discussions (e.g., panel discussion), although many participants gather for the discussion. To solve these problems, in this study, we proposed a cyber-physical discussion using “COLLAGREE,” which we developed for building consensus of large-scale online discussions. COLLAGREE is equipped with functions such as a facilitator, point ranking system, and display of discussion in tree structure. We focused on the relationship between satisfaction with the discussion and participants' desire to express opinions. We conducted the experiment in the panel discussion of an actual international conference. Participants who were audiences in the floor used COLLAGREE during the panel discussion. They responded to questionnaires after the experiment. The main findings are as follows: (1) Participation in online discussion was associated with the satisfaction of the participants; (2) Participants who desired to positively express opinions joined the cyber-space discussion; and (3) The satisfaction of participants who expressed opinions in the cyber-space discussion was higher than those of participants who expressed opinions in the real-space discussion and those who did not express opinions in both the cyber- and real-space discussions. Overall, active behaviors in the cyber-space discussion were associated with participants' satisfaction with the entire discussion, suggesting that cyberspace provided useful alternative opportunities to express opinions for audiences who used to listen to conventional unidirectional discussions passively. In addition, a complementary relationship exists between participation in the cyber-space and real-space discussions. These findings can serve to create a user-friendly discussion environment.

    Recently, the opportunity to discuss topics on a variety of online discussion bulletin boards has been increasing. However, it can be difficult to understand the contents of each discussion as the number of posts increases. Therefore, it is important to generate headlines that can automatically summarize each post in order to understand the contents of each discussion at a glance. In this paper, we propose a method to extract and generate post headlines for online discussion bulletin boards, automatically. We propose templates with multiple patterns to extract important sentences from the posts. In addition, we propose a method to generate headlines by matching the templates with the patterns. Then, we evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed method using questionnaires.

    This paper proposes the mesh-topology based wireless-powered communication network (MT-WPCN), which consists of a hybrid-access point (H-AP) and nodes. The H-AP broadcasts energy to all nodes by wireless, and the nodes harvest the energy and then communicate with other nodes including the H-AP. For the communication in the MT-WPCN, we propose the harvest-then-transceive protocol to ensure that the nodes can harvest energy from the H-AP and transmit information selectively to the H-AP or other nodes, which is not supported in most protocols proposed for the conventional WPCN. In the proposed protocol, we consider that the energy harvesting can be interrupted at nodes, since the nodes cannot harvest energy during transmission or reception. We also consider that the harvested energy is consumed by the reception of information from other nodes. In addition, the energy reservation model is required to guarantee the QoS, which reserves the infimum energy to receive information reliably by the transmission power control. Under these considerations, first, we design the half harvest-then-transceive protocol, which indicates that a node transmits information only to other nodes which do not transmit information yet, for investing the effect of the energy harvesting interruption. Secondly, we also design the full harvest-then-transceive protocol for the information exchange among nodes and compatibility with the conventional star-topology based WPCN, which indicates that a node can transmit information to any network unit, i.e., the H-AP and all nodes. We study the sum-throughput maximization in the MT-WPCN based on the half and full harvest-then-transceive protocols, respectively. Furthermore, the amount of harvested energy is analytically compared according to the energy harvesting interruption in the protocols. Simulation results show that the proposed MT-WPCN outperforms the conventional star-topology based WPCN in terms of the sum-throughput maximization, when wireless information transmission among nodes occurs frequently.

  • Activating Group Discussion by Topic Providing Bots

    Online chat systems, e.g.., Twitter and Slack, have been used in academic conferences or study meetings as a means of instant discussion and sharing related information alongside a real presentation. We propose a system for activating online discussion by providing a bot that suggests webpages related to current timeline of the discussion. Our system generates keyword vectors according to discussion timeline, searches best related webpages from several web sites, and timely provides these pages to the discussion timeline. This paper describes deployments of our system in two types of meetings: lightning talk format meetings and group meetings; and daily exchanges using online chat system. As a result, we could not find good enough reactions to the bot's postings from meeting participants at the lightning talk format meetings, but we could observe more reactions and progress of discussion caused by the bot's postings at the relaxed meetings and daily exchanges among group members.

    In conventional multiview video systems using progressive download, a user downloads videos of all viewpoints of one content to realize smooth view switching. This, however, increases the video traffic, and if the available download rate is low, the video quality suffers. Downloading only the desired viewpoint is one approach for reducing the traffic. However, in this case, playback stalls will occur after view switching. These stalls degrade the user's satisfaction for the application. In this paper, we aim at two objectives: 1) to achieve reduction in video traffic and 2) to minimize the number of playback stalls. To this end, we propose a new multiview video delivery scheme for progressive download. The main idea of the proposed scheme is that the user downloads a part of viewpoints only, which will be played back by the user with a high probability, to realize both traffic reduction and smooth view switching. In addition, we propose two download-scheduling algorithms to prevent playback stalls even at low download rates. The first algorithm prevents stalls in the cases with frequent view switching, such as zapping, while the second prevents stalls in gazing cases. Evaluations using a Joint Multiview Video Coding (JMVC) encoder and multiview video sequences show that our scheme achieves not only reduced video traffic but also decreased number of playback stalls, regardless of the user's view-switching model or download rate. In addition, we demonstrate that the proposed method does not cause playback stalls irrespective of high and low motion video contents.

    As the manual creation of domain models and also of linked data is very costly, the extraction of knowledge from structured and unstructured data has been one of the central research areas in the Semantic Web field in the last two decades. Here, we look specifically at the extraction of formalized knowledge from natural language text, which is the most abundant source of human knowledge available. There are many tools on hand for information and knowledge extraction for English natural language, for written Thai language the situation is different. The goal of this work is to assess the state-of-the-art of research on formal knowledge extraction specifically from Thai language text, and then give suggestions and practical research ideas on how to improve the state-of-the-art. To address the goal, first we distinguish nine knowledge extraction for the Semantic Web tasks defined in literature on knowledge extraction from English text, for example taxonomy extraction, relation extraction, or named entity recognition. For each of the nine tasks, we analyze the publications and tools available for Thai text in the form of a comprehensive literature survey. Additionally to our assessment, we measure the self-assessment by the Thai research community with the help of a questionnaire-based survey on each of the tasks. Furthermore, the structure and size of the Thai community is analyzed using complex literature database queries. Combining all the collected information we finally identify research gaps in knowledge extraction from Thai language. An extensive list of practical research ideas is presented, focusing on concrete suggestions for every knowledge extraction task - which can be implemented and evaluated with reasonable effort. Besides the task-specific hints for improvements of the state-of-the-art, we also include general recommendations on how to raise the efficiency of the respective research community.

    Large scale first-hand tweets motivate automatic event detection on Twitter. Previous approaches model events by clustering tweets, words or segments. On the other hand, event clusters represented by tweets are easier to understand than those represented by words/segments. However, compared to words/segments, tweets are sparser and therefore makes clustering less effective. This article proposes to represent events with triple structures called frames, which are as efficient as, yet can be easier to understand than words/segments. Frames are extracted based on shallow syntactic information of tweets with an unsupervised open information extraction method, which is introduced for domain-independent relation extraction in a single pass over web scale data. This is then followed by bursty frame element extraction functions as feature selection by filtering frame elements with bursty frequency pattern via a probabilistic model. After being clustered and ranked, high-quality events are yielded and then reported by linking frame elements back to frames. Experimental results show that frame-based event detection leads to improved precision over a state-of-the-art baseline segment-based event detection method. Superior readability of frame-based events as compared with segment-based events is demonstrated in some example outputs.

    Creating an ontology from multidisciplinary knowledge is a challenge because it needs a number of various domain experts to collaborate in knowledge construction and verify the semantic meanings of the cross-domain concepts. Confusions and misinterpretations of concepts during knowledge creation are usually caused by having different perspectives and different business goals from different domain experts. In this paper, we propose a community-driven ontology-based application management (CD-OAM) framework that provides a collaborative environment with supporting features to enable collaborative knowledge creation. It can also reduce confusions and misinterpretations among domain stakeholders during knowledge construction process. We selected one of the multidisciplinary domains, which is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for our scenario-based knowledge construction. Constructing the LCA knowledge requires many concepts from various fields including environment protection, economic development, social development, etc. The output of this collaborative knowledge construction is called MLCA (multidisciplinary LCA) ontology. Based on our scenario-based experiment, it shows that CD-OAM framework can support the collaborative activities for MLCA knowledge construction and also reduce confusions and misinterpretations of cross-domain concepts that usually presents in general approach.
