  • Refinements and Evaluations of Line-Based Pose Enumeration from a Single Image

    This paper proposes robust algorithms for linebased pose enumeration from a single view, and it reports on their evaluations by simulations. The proposed algorithms incorporate two major refinements into the algorithms originally proposed by Shakunaga [1]. The first refinement, introduction of zone-crossing detection to the 1-d search remarkably decreases the rate of overlooking a correct pose. The second refinement, adaptive selection of a PAT pair considerably reduces the average estimation error. Simulation results show that pose estimation precision depends primarily on the precision of line detection. Although the refinements are widely effective, they are more effective for more precise line detection. For 99% of rigid body samples, the algorithm can estimate rotation with an error of less than 2 degrees, and for 99.9% of the samples, the error is less than 10 degrees. Simulation experiments for articulated objects show similar results by using the second algorithm. The effectiveness of the algorithms is verified in an alignment approach by simulations.

    A new application of the factorization method is reported for 3-D shape reconstruction from endoscope image sequences. The feasibility of the method is verified with some theoretical considerations and results of extensive experiments. This method was developed by Tomasi and Kanade, and improved by Poelman and Kanade, with the aim of achieving accurate shape reconstruction by using a large number of points and images, and robustly applying well-understood matrix computations. However, the latter stage of the method, called normalization, is not as easily understandable as the use of singular value decomposition in the first stage. In fact, as shown in this report, many choices are possible for this normalization and a variety of results have been obtained depending on the choice. This method is easy to understand, easy to implement, and provides sufficient accuracy when the approximation used for the optical system is reasonable. However, the details of the theoretical basis require further study.

    Recently, there have been intensive studies on protocol methods and applications of short range inter-vehicle communication network (SR-IVCN) and systems. The purpose of the studies is to improve the safety of road traffic systems and the smooth control of the traffic flow by providing information to vehicles. Spread spectrum (SS) communication systems are able to simultaneously communicate and measure the distance between the terminals, thus it is advantageous to apply the spread spectrum technique to inter-vehicle communications. This paper assumes that the vehicles incidentally close to each other, form and manage a locally autonomous decentralized dynamic network. An R-ALOHA (Reservation-ALOHA) protocol for the spread spectrum inter-vehicle communication network using head spacing information is proposed which improve the conventional slot reservation methods. Since the near-far problem in SS communication is one reason for the degradation of system performance, this proposed scheme is shown to improve the efficiency of communication. The performance of the proposed system in the environment where the vehicles are assumed to run freely on a highway is verified by computer simulation. It is shown that inter-vehicle communication can be smoothly carried out between one vehicle and the surrounding vehicles using the propose method.

    A pilot symbol-assisted coherent multistage interference canceller (PSA-COMSIC) using recursive channel estimation is proposed for DS-CDMA mobile radio cellular systems. In the proposed scheme, since the channel variation due to fading is recursively estimated at each interference canceling stage, the accuracy of channel estimation is successively improved. The bit error rate (BER) performances against average Eb/N0 (signal energy per bit-to-noise power spectral density ratio) and capacity in the isolated cell are investigated by computer simulations. The simulations demonstrate that the capacity using the PSA-COMSIC with recursive channel estimation is about 1.6 times higher than that of the conventional matched filter receiver with channel coding and bit-interleaving in the interference-limited environments.

  • Two Dimensional Largest Common Subpatterns between Pictures

    Several two-dimensional largest common subpatterns (LCP) between pictures are defined and their computing methods are proposed. The time and space complexities of the computing methods are O(IJMN) to obtain the size of LCPs between a picture with IJ pixels and a picture with MN pixels. These LCPs can be used as similarity measures between pictures and can be applied to texture recognition and classification.

    Direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) is a promising candidate for 3rd generation mobile communications systems. We recently proposed a coherent multicode DS-CDMA (CM-CDMA) scheme that uses pilot symbol-aided coherent RAKE, interference power measurement based transmit power control, orthogonal multicode transmission, and concatenated channel coding. We have implemented a CM-CDMA test-bed for a series of laboratory and field tests using the 2 GHz band. This paper describes the test-bed system and experimental results are presented. It is confirmed that pilot symbol-aided coherent RAKE can reduce the required signal energy per bit-to-interference plus background noise spectrum density ratio (Eb/Io) by 2-3 dB from that achievable with differential detection. Also shown is that by using both RAKE combining and SIR-based power control the transmit power of mobile stations can be significantly reduced. Measurement results show that the required Eb/Io degrades only slightly when 24 code-channels (768 kbps) are used since orthogonal Gold sequences are used as short spreading codes.

    In this study, we analyze the system which simultaneously transmits spread-spectrum signals with different processing gains. The main purpose of this study is to give an analytical framework that describes the influence of the interfering signals with different processing gains. For this purpose, we define a crosscorrelation function between the spreading sequences with different code lengths, and discuss the effects of interaction between the signals. As the results, we show that the power of the interference component after despreading procedure, the power ratio of the desired to undesired components, and thus the bit error rate are not constant but vary symbol by symbol.

  • Josephson Array Oscillators Using Resonant Effects in Shunted Tunnel Junctions

    Resonant properties of resistance shunted tunnel junctions have been investigated using the RLCSJ model. We found that an increase in dc current resulted from an increase in impedance of the shunted tunnel junctions. The static and dynamic properties of the shunted tunnel junctions were described in detail by numerical simulations and experiments. The simulated and measured results showed good agreement in I-V characteristics. A Josephson array oscillator has been proposed using the resonant properties for increasing oscillator output impedance. We designed and fabricated the oscillator with 20 shunted tunnel junctions. The output power of the oscillator delivered to the load resistor was estimated to be about 0.5µW at 312 GHz.

    A quasi-optical Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) mixer has been designed and tested in the 270-GHz band. The mixer used a substrate-lens-coupled log-periodic antenna and a tuning circuit for RF matching. The antenna is planar and self-complementary, and has a frequency-independent impedance of around 114 Ω over several octaves. The tuning circuit consists of two Nb/AIOx/Nb tunnel junctions separated by inductance for tuning out the junction capacitances and a λ/4 impedance transformer for matching the resistance of the two-junction circuit to the antenna impedance. The IF output from the mixer is brought out in a balanced method at each edge of the antenna, and is coupled to a low noise amplifier through a balun transformer using a 180-degree hybrid coupler for broadband IF matching. Double sideband receiver noise temperatures, determined from experimental Y-factor measurements, are about 150 K across the majority of the desired operating frequency band. The minimum receiver noise temperature of 120 K was measured at 263 GHz, which is as low as that of waveguide receivers. At this frequency, measurement of the noise contribution to the receiver results in input losses of 90 K, mixer noise of 17 K, and multiplied IF noise of 13 K. We found that the major sources of noise in our quasi-optical receiver were the optical losses.

  • Epitaxial Nature of New Insulating Material BaSnO3 for YBa2Cu3Ox-SIS Junctions

    BaSnO3 is proposed as a new insulating material with good surface coverage of the lower superconductor electrode for superconductor/insulator/superconductor (SIS) tunnel junctions made of high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO). This paper reports on investigation of the epitaxial nature of BaSnO3 on YBCO thin films and YBCO/BaSnO3 /YBCO trilayer formation that are grown in situ by reactive co-evaporation in oxygen radicals. Investigation was done by reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). these observations confirm that (001)-oriented YBCO and (100)-oriented BaSnO3 thin films with atomically smooth surfaces grow epitaxially on each other. In addition, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation reveals that an approximately 4-nm-thick layer of BaSnO3 perfectly covers the lower YBCO thin film surface steps to a height of 1 to 2 unit cells of YBCO. The zero-resistance critical temperature Tc zero of both the upper and the lower YBCO thin films is higher than about 86 K.

  • Time Delay Spread in Microcellular Environment for Personal Communication Systems

    Microcellular systems are suitable as personal mobile communication systems because of their high channel re-use efficiency and low transmission power. To implement a microcellular system, the antennas of base stations should be low enough, compared to the buildings around them, to reduce the interference to or from other base stations. In high-speed digital mobile radio communications, the time delay spread caused by multipath propagation is a significant factor in determining the maximum data transmission rate. In the case of a low-antenna-height microcellular system, the propagation characteristics rapidly change when the mobile terminal moves from a line-of-sight (LOS) location to a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) location. In this paper, the time dealy spread characteristics under LOS and NLOS conditions are examined using a geometrical street model which has a reflecting wall at one end of the street on which the base station is located. The RMS delay spreads are calculated using optical ray theory, taking into consideration the wedge diffraction on the street corner. If a reflecting wall exists, the RMS delay spread increases as the mobile terminal moves away from the base station under LOS conditions, or away from the street corner under NLOS conditions. The calculated results agree with the experimental results if measuring equipment noise is taken into consideration.

    In Perosonal communication systems (PCS), reduction control of call blocking rate on wireless-environments, especially in terminating-call set up, is one of the key technologies to design network architecture. This is because the error rate of transferred messages there is normally much higher than that in wired environments. Terminating-call reforwarding technologies, to forward twice terminating-call messages through paging channels depending on call states, would be essential under such conditions, and in the PCS network architecture there are two possible reforwarding schemes: network-assisted reforwarding (NAR) and cell-station-assisted reforwarding (CAR). We first propose a traffic model for evaluating the performance of terminating-call reforwarding from the viewpoint of reduction of the call blocking rate on PCS, and then we clarify the advocating domains for NAR and CAR. Finally, we present a case study using this evaluation model for the Personal Handy-phone System (PHS), which is a PCS in Japan. The results of this study confirm that NAR is more efficient than CAR.

    Viterbi decoding is known as a decoding scheme that can realize maximum likelihood decoding. However, it is impossible to continue it without re-synchronization even if only an insertion/deletion error occurs in a channel. In this paper, we show that Levenshtein distance is suitable for the metric of Viterbi decoding in a channel where not only symbol errors but also insertion/deletion errors occur under some conditions and we propose a kind of Viterbi decoding considering insertion/deletion errors.

    An antenna and multi-carrier combined diversity system using Time Division Duplex (TDD) is proposed to combat with multi-path channel problem which produces frequency-selective fading and degrades the quality of signal transimission. So far multi-carrier modulation technique has been studied to solve this problem. On the other hand, TDD method has been studied to use a transmitter antenna diversity as pre-diversity against flat fading (non-selective fading). Our proposed system merges these two methods in a micro-cellular system as follows. On the reverse link, the base station can select the best combination between the carriers and antennas after receiving the multi-carrier signal from the mobile station. On the forward link, the same combination selected on the reverse link can be used to send the signal from the base station with multi-antenna to the mobile station with a single antenna and produces pre-diversity (transmitter diversity) effect which can reduce the complexity at the mobile station. The pre-diversity must be based on TDD function because the channel has to be observed before the signal transimission. By computer simulations we find that our proposed system can achieve far better performance than conventional systems.

  • A TM21 Mode Annular-Ring Microstrip Antenna for Personal Satellite Communication Use

    This paper presents a configuration of circularly polarized annular-ring microstrip antenna (ARMSA) and its design method to obtain high gain and low axial ratio including the analysis of finite ground plane effect using G.T.D. for personal satellite communication use. The ARMSA excited at TM21 mode through co-planar branch-line hybrid coupler for circular polarization produces a conical pattern which has high gain in low elevation angle. The relation of gain and axial ratio versus the dielectric constant of substrate are shown and the existence of the dielectric constant which satisfies two requirements, that is, high gain and low axial ratio are clarified. For car-top application, experimental results in the L-band showed satisfactory characteristics for vehicle antenna.

    The advantages of the use of directional antennas for portable telephones are demonstrated. They contribute to (1) reduction of power absorption into a head, (2) reduction of multi-path interference, and (3) power saving and increase of a battery life time. This paper compares directional and omni-directional antennas existing near the head of operator, in terms of radiation patterns with a head and the power absorbed into a head. It is pointed out that radiation patterns with a head are more or less directive for both types of antennas, while the power absorbed into a head is much smaller for directional antennas.

    In this paper, we evaluate the bit error rate (BER) performance of a coordinate interleaved trellis coded QPSK with T-algorithm. We employ a coordinate interleaving which breaks up burst errors, caused by fading, more effectively than symbol interleaving. We employ a rate-1/2 convolutional codes and the performance is evaluated on Rayleigh fading channels in terms of bit error rate (BER) by analysis and computer simulation. We consider using of the code which having a long effective code length (ECL). For this reason, we employ a decoder based on T-algorithm instead of Viterbi algorithm to avoid the complexity in the decoding. As the results, we achieve satisfactory BER performance with a slight computation in the decoding algorithm and the finite interleaving size.

    In this paper, coded modulation techniques suitable for satellite broadcasting of digital high-definition TV are studied. An overview of current approaches to satellite broadcasting is presented. New constructions of coded modulation schemes for unequal error protection (UEP), based on both block and trellis codes, are introduced in this paper. The proposed schemes can achieve both better overall performance and enhanced graceful degradation of the received signal, in comparison with existing digital satellite broadcasting approaches.

    Hybrid direct sequence/slow frequency hopping-time division duplex (DS/SFH-TDD) multiple access system has some good features of each system. However it has a problem of hit between multiple users. If the designed frequency hopping patterns are inadequate, the quality of the multiple access system is degraded due to the frequent hit. In this paper, we propose an adaptive hopping pattern control system which is able to avoid the multiple access interference of hit. The proposed system decreases the influence of hit and increases the user capacity in the cell. And this adaptive hopping pattern control is applied to both single-cell and multi-cell systems. By computer simulation to evaluate the performance of this system, we found that this system is effective in increasing the multiple access capability.

  • Blind Channel Identification and Equalization from Second-Order Statistics and Absolute Mean

    This paper presents a new blind identification method of nonminimum phase FIR systems and an adaptive blind equalization for PAM/QAM inputs without employing higher-order statistics. They are based on the observation that the absolute mean of a second-order white sequence can measure whether the sequence is higher-order white or not. The proposed methods are new alternatives to many higher-order statistics approaches. Some computer simulations show that the absolute mean is exactly estimated and the proposed methods can overcome the disadvantages of the higher-order statistics approaches.
