This paper presents a technique for improving the SNR and resolution of complex bandpass ΔΣADCs which are used for wireless communication systems such as cellular phone, wireless LAN and Bluetooth. Oversampling and noise-shaping are used to achieve high accuracy of a ΔΣAD modulator. However when a multi-bit internal DAC is used inside a modulator, nonlinearities of the DAC are not noise-shaped and the SNR of the ΔΣADC degrades. For the conversion of complex intermediate frequency (IF) input signals, a complex bandpass ΔΣAD modulator can provide superior performance to a pair of real bandpass ΔΣAD modulators of the same order. This paper proposes a new noise-shaping algorithm--implemented by adding simple digital circuitry--to reduce the effects of nonlinearities in multi-bit DACs of complex bandpass ΔΣAD modulators. We have performed simulation with MATLAB to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm, and the results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the SNR of a complex bandpass ΔΣADC with nonlinear internal multi-bit DACs.

In this paper, the average bit error probability of uplink and downlink Multicarrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA) system using coherent Maximal-Ratio Combining (MRC) and Equal Gain Combining (EGC) receivers is evaluated for frequency selective Nakagami fading channels. The analysis assumes that different subcarriers experience independent fading channels, but not necessary identically distributed. The analysis is based on Gaussian approximation of the multiple access interference. Generalized bit error probability (BEP) expressions for both uplink and downlink with MRC and EGC receivers were derived. The analytical results are supported with simulation results. The effect of fading parameters, number of users, and number of subcarriers were presented. The BEP performance of the EGC receiver in the uplink is highly influenced by the fading parameter compared with the MRC receiver. The EGC receiver outperforms the MRC receiver in the downlink, but the MRC receiver gives almost the same performance as the EGC in the uplink.

An NRD guide transmitter and a receiver were developed for a wireless multi-channel TV-signal distribution system at 60 GHz. The main emphasis was placed on a band-widening technique of the NRD guide beam-lead diode mount based on an electromagnetic field simulator, where each dimension of the beam lead diode mount was optimized. The agreement between the simulation and measurement is quite satisfactory. The up-converter fabricated by assembling a band-pass filter and a Schottky barrier diode mount has a good linearity as well as a flat output power of 2 dBm on the average over a bandwidth of at least 2 GHz. Moreover, the down-converter has a flat conversion loss performance of less than 7 dB in the same bandwidth. An NRD guide transmitter and a receiver characterized by small size and high performance were fabricated and successfully employed for the wireless distribution of TV signals for more than 100 channels.

A unified linear multiuser receiver that minimizes a weighted sum of the multiple access interference (MAI) and the background noise is introduced. The proposed receiver includes the three popular linear receivers, namely the matched-filter, the decorrelating and the minimum mean-square-error receivers as special cases. Furthermore, by tuning a single weighting factor, it is possible to improve the performance of the proposed receiver over that of any of the above mentioned linear receivers.

10-Gbit/s wireless data transmission using 120-GHz millimeter-wave (MMW) photonic technologies is presented. For such high-data-rate transmission, we have newly developed a planar broadband receiver that employs a > 200-GHz Schottky diode and a slot-ring antenna with a 10-dB bandwidth of 30 GHz. The receiver achieves a high video sensitivity of 190 mV/mW at 120 GHz due to its optimized data output circuit. The MMW wireless link using the receiver and photonic transmitter has data transmission bandwidth of 8.5 GHz, and succeeded in 10-Gbit/s data transmission, which is the fastest ever achieved through a MMW wireless link.

In this paper, we describe the design, optimization and fabrication of high-speed InP/InGaAs heterojunction bipolar phototransistors (photo-HBTs) with both optical cut-off frequency (Fc) and optical gain (Gopt) higher than 100 GHz and 30 dB, respectively. Small- and large-signal models of the photo-HBT have been developed in order to design optoelectronic monolithically integrated circuits (OEIC) using this device. Integrated circuits such as optoelectronic narrow-band amplifiers at 28 GHz with a transimpedance gain of 50 dBΩ and optoelectronic upconverting mixers at 28 and 42 GHz with a mixer conversion gain of 17.8 dB and 9.2 dB respectively, were fabricated. The performances of the mixer circuits were superior to those of individual photo-HBT mixer. These optoelectronic integrated circuits based on InP photo-HBTs are attractive building blocks for realizing compact and cost-effective photoreceivers for millimeter-wave radio-over-fiber links.

GPS receivers are susceptible to jamming by interference. This paper proposes a recurrent neural network (RNN) predictor for new application in GPS anti-jamming systems. Five types of narrowband jammers, i. e. AR process, continuous wave interference (CWI), multi-tone CWI, swept CWI, and pulsed CWI, are considered in order to emulate realistic conditions. As the observation noise of received signals is highly non-Gaussian, an RNN estimator with a nonlinear structure is employed to accurately predict the narrowband signals based on a real-time learning method. The node decoupled extended Kalman filter (NDEKF) algorithm is adopted to achieve better performance in terms of convergence rate and quality of solution while requiring less computation time and memory. We analyze the computational complexity and memory requirements of the NDEKF approach and compare them to the global extended Kalman filter (GEKF) training paradigm. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme achieves a superior performance to conventional linear/nonlinear predictors in terms of SNR improvement and mean squared prediction error (MSPE) while providing inherent protection against a broad class of interference environments.

This paper presents a practical implementation scheme of the variable gain amplifier (VGA) using a Cds photo coupler (Cds PC) as a variable resister at the feedback loop. The fundamental design policies of IF amplifier stage in superheterodyne receiver were described. We demonstrated the VGA's experimental results. The results indicated the excellent IIP3 of +25 dBm achieved by a gain of 15 dB, and the reasonable thermal stability and variable gain range. Third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) comparison between the proposed VGA and conventional PIN diode attenuation type VGA was evaluated and the result indicated that the proposed VGA surpassed the PIN VGA. The proposed VGA was practically fabricated in 455 kHz IF amplifier stage for an airborne VHF communication receiver in order to improve the large signal handling capability to eliminate numerous interferences resulting from the collocated airborne VHF communication systems on the aircraft.

In this paper, the closed-form expressions of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the outage probability are derived for a maximal ratio combining (MRC) two-dimensional (2-D)-RAKE receiver with imperfect power control in a frequency-selective Nakagami fading channel. The impact of power control error (PCE) on the performance of the receiver is analyzed for all kinds of fading environments. The results of numerical derivation and simulation indicate that the performance of 2-D-RAKE receivers degrades due to imperfect power control. But when PCE is not serious, increasing the number of antennae and temporal diversity order can compensate for the performance loss. The exact performance improvement due to space-time processing varies with the PCE and the fading environment.

This paper presents architecture design, FPGA implementation, and measurement results of a real-time signal processing circuit for WCDMA uplink baseband receiver. To enhance uplink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) performance, a four-element antenna array and a four-finger Rake combiner are integrated in the proposed receiver. Moreover, a low-complexity beamforming architecture using a correlator-based beam searcher, a decision-directed carrier synchronization loop, and a matched-filter based channel estimator is also designed. Simulations are based on the standard Doppler-fading scalar channel models provided by 3GPP and an extension to vector channel models that specify angle of arrival for each path is also made for beamformer simulation. Simulation and hardware emulation results show that the proposed architecture meets the specified requirements. In addition, this architecture, with its correlator-based beamformer weights, achieves such performance improvement with relatively low hardware complexity.

In this paper, a digital compensation scheme for coefficient errors of a complex filter bank parallel A/D converter in low-IF receivers is presented. The complex filter bank is employed to suppress DC offset and image signals in the low-IF receivers and relax the requirements on the conversion rate and resolution of A/D converters. The proposed compensation scheme regenerates interference due to coefficient errors and subtracts it from the digital signal converted by an A/D converter. The proposed scheme also improves the effective resolution of A/D converters.

It is well known that some of urban man-made noises can be characterized by a wideband impulsive noise (pure impulsive noise). The presence of this pure impulsive noise may significantly degrade the wireless digital transmission performance. As the data rate becomes higher and the radio bandwidth becomes wider, the performance degradation due to pure impulsive interference may become larger. In this paper, the DS-CDMA transmission performance in the presence of pure impulsive interference is theoretically analyzed. First, the BER expressions are derived for DS-CDMA with antenna diversity and Rake combining in a frequency selective fading channel. Then, the numerical computation based on Monte-Carlo method is performed to evaluate the BER performance. Two types of error floor are observed: one is due to impulsive interference and the other due to the multi access interference (MAI). It is found that the error floor due to impulsive interference becomes larger as the area of impulse and the error floor is linearly proportional to the impulse occurrence rate. Furthermore, it is found that the antenna diversity and Rake combining do not help to reduce the error floor caused by impulsive interference and that the influence of impulsive interference can be negligible when the channel is limited by the MAI (i.e., large number of users are in communication).

This paper presents efficient file management of a hard disk drive embedded digital satellite receiver. The digital broadcasting technology enables multimedia access via broadcasting systems. The amount of digital data to be processed is increased remarkably as compared to the previous analog broadcasting environments. The efficient digital data storage and management technology are discussed in this paper to cope with these changes. The DSR uses a new file system that is designed by considering disk cluster sizes and limited memories in the system, which is more appropriate than that of general Personal Computers. The proposed system enables us to watch broadcasting and to manage multimedia data efficiently.

The pre-Rake system is known as a technique in TDD DS/CDMA system to reduce the mobile complexity and achieve the same BER performance like Rake receiver. The pre-Rake system itself is not optimum, since the channel impulse responses of uplink and downlink are slightly different in TDD system, so the signal- to-noise ratio (SNR) can be maximized with a matched filter based Rake receiver, which has not been considered in the conventional pre-Rake system. Furthermore pre-Rake system is sensitive to the Doppler frequency. Even though the pre-Rake system has the ability to suppress other user interference, it is not efficient to maximize the received signal in high Doppler frequency. However, Rake combiner is utilized for the detection method in our proposed system. So the maximized signal can keep the orthogonality better than the pre-Rake system and our proposed system can compensate the Doppler frequency effect. From these reasons, our system achieves better BER performance than that of the pre-Rake system with increasing the number of users in high Doppler frequency.

A unified view of RAKE reception is proposed which models a RAKE receiver as an antenna array. This unified view provides valuable insight to the signal environment under RAKE reception. Based on this view, an optimum combining scheme for RAKE receivers is proposed for the downlink of multi-code W-CDMA systems. In multi-code scenarios, the presence of inter-code interference causes severe performance degradation. The antenna array model suggests that enhancement can be achieved by increasing the receiver's degrees of freedom which is defined as the number of RAKE fingers and employs an appropriate combining scheme. The conventional maximum-ratio combining scheme is excluded since it is not capable of exploiting the increased degrees of freedom. In contrast, the proposed combining scheme provides better interference suppression when the degrees of freedom are increased. Numerical results obtained show that the proposed scheme provides very promising performance.

A space-time (ST) receiver is proposed for multiple access interference (MAI) and narrowband interference (NBI) suppression, and multipath diversity reception in wireless multi-carrier CDMA communications incorporating antenna arrays. The scheme involves three stages. First, an adaptive matched filter is attached to each finger at each antenna to combat the MAI. Second, an adaptive beamformer is constructed for each finger which provides effective reception of the signal of interest (SOI) and suppression of time-varying NBI. Finally, beamformer output data from different fingers are combined to capture the signal multipath components coherently. The proposed ST receiver is shown to perform reliably under strong interference, and outperform the ST MMSE receiver with pilot symbols aided channel estimation.

It has been shown that the performances of single-receiver ARQ schemes are largely dependent on the packet-error process, i.e., for dependent packet-error environment, they are under- or over- estimated by analyzing them under the assumption that packet-errors occur at random. While, multi-receiver ARQ's have not been analyzed and evaluated for dependent packet-error process. In this paper, we analyze the throughput efficiency of the fundamental multi-receiver Go-back-N ARQ scheme, which can be implemented very simply, over an unreliable channel modeled by the two-state Markov process. Any receiver erroneously receives a packet with probability inherent to each state. From numerical results, we show that the throughput efficiency of the fundamental multi-receiver Go-Back-N ARQ scheme depends on the number of receivers, round-trip-delay, and the characteristic of the Markov process. Also we show that the throughput efficiency of the fundamental multi-receiver Go-Back-N ARQ scheme for larger decay factor and larger difference between packet error probability at each state is considerably better than that for the random error pattern.

We propose a new receiver structure to mitigate interpath interference (IPI) in W-CDMA systems. We model IPI in RAKE combining as intersymbol interference (ISI) and use a two-stage receiver structure. The first stage is a RAKE receiver and the second stage is an equalizer. In cases of multi-code transmission, interference among code channels causes extra impairments which can not be modelled as ISI. Under these circumstances, they are estimated by using decisions from the first stage and then subtracted from the input of the equalizer. The residual interference is equivalent to ISI and can be mitigated by the equalizer. Simulation results show that the proposed receiver provides very promising performance in low spreading factor W-CDMA.

Previous device models for Hot Electron Bolometers (HEB) apply a lumped element approach to calculate the small signal parameters. In this work, large signal parameters are calculated using a nonlinear one-dimensional heat balance equation including critical current effects. Small signal equivalents are obtained by solving a linearized heat balance for the small signal beat term in the HEB. In this model, the absorbed bias power density is treated as a profile along the HEB bridge and the electrothermal feedback acts differently on different parts of the bridge. This model predicts more realistic conversion gain figures being about 10 dB lower than in previous ones.
