  • A Complexity-Reduced Time Alignment Control in Uplink Dynamic Parameter Controlled OF/TDMA

    We have been investigating an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based cellular system that is called "dynamic parameter controlled orthogonal frequency and time division multiple access (DPC-OF/TDMA)" for the development of beyond third generation (B3G) mobile communication systems. Moreover, we have already proposed a time alignment control (TAC) to compensate propagation delays that induce a multiple-access interference (MAI) in the uplink OFDMA. However, that TAC includes a large amount of computations. This means that it is quite difficult for the OFDMA systems to implement TAC into volume-limited hardware devices such as field programmable gate array (FPGA). Thus, we propose a new complexity-reduced TAC (CRTAC) in this paper. CRTAC can be implemented into such devices easily. In this paper, we show some computer simulation results, and then evaluate the error rate performances of DPC-OF/TDMA employing CRTAC. Moreover, we also show the benefit of the reasonable level of the implementation complexity made by CRTAC.

    A method which uses the moving time and the over travel time of contact to discover the characteristics of contact and the reliability of aerospace relay is proposed. The Gauss-Newton method and its improved form (Macalto method) are used to identify the nonlinear mathematical model of the parameter during armature initial moving period, which is from the coil is energized at a rated voltage to the moment the armature begins to move. The validity of the method is verified by results of actual experiments and analysis.

    Antenna diversity is an effective technique for improving the transmission performance in a multi-path fading channel. Recently, transmit diversity has been attracting much attention since it can alleviate the complexity problem of the mobile terminals. Joint transmit diversity/receive diversity achieves a much improved transmission performance. In this paper, we propose a new space-time block coding algorithm for joint transmit/receive diversity, which requires the channel state information (CSI) only at the transmitter side. Unlike the conventional space-time transmit diversity (STTD), the space-time block coded joint transmit/receive diversity (STBC-JTRD) can use arbitrary number of transmit antennas, while the number of receive antennas is limited to 4. STBC-JTRD achieves a larger diversity gain than joint STTD/receive antenna diversity. The bit error rate (BER) analysis in a frequency-nonselective Rayleigh fading channel is presented. The BER performance is evaluated and is confirmed by the computer simulation.

  • Analysis and Synthesis of Emotional Voice Based on Time-Frequency Pitch Distributions

    In this paper, analysis and synthesis methods of emotional voice for man-machine natural interface is developed. First, the emotional voice (neutral, anger, sadness, joy, dislike) is analyzed using time-frequency representation of speech and similarity analysis. Then, based on the result of emotional analysis, a voice with neutral emotion is transformed to synthesize the particular emotional voice using time-frequency modifications. In the simulations, five types of emotion are analyzed using 50 samples of speech signals. The high average discrimination rate is achieved in the similarity analysis. Further, the synthesized emotional voice is subjectively evaluated. It is confirmed that the emotional voice is naturally generated by the proposed time-frequency based approach.

    This paper discusses a cyclic prefixed single carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) scheme with two types of transmit diversity. Firstly, we propose a SC-FDE system with space-frequency block coding (SFBC). The transmit sequence of the proposed system is designed to have spatial and frequency diversities, which is equivalent to the SFBC. The corresponding combining receiver is derived under a minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. It is shown that the proposed system significantly outperforms the SC-FDE system with space-time block coding (STBC) over fast fading channels, while providing lower computational complexity than orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) combined with SFBC. We verify the performance of two-branch transmit diversity systems including the proposed one through bit error rate (BER) analysis. Secondly, as a scheme that combines STBC and SFBC, a space-time-frequency block code (STFBC) SC-FDE system is presented. Computer simulation results show that the proposed STFBC SC-FDE system has better immunity to the distortion caused by both fast fading and severe frequency selective fading, compared to the SC-FDE system with the STBC or the SFBC scheme. Complexity analysis is also conducted to compare their computational loads of the transceiver. It is shown that the proposed STFBC SC-FDE system has lower computational complexity than the STFBC OFDM system.

  • Experiment and Theoretical Analysis of Voltage-Controlled Sub-THz Oscillation of Resonant Tunneling Diodes

    Experimental result and theoretical analysis are reported for bias-voltage dependence of oscillation frequency in resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs) integrated with slot antennas. Frequency change of 18 GHz is obtained experimentally for a device with the central oscillation frequency of 470 GHz. The observed frequency change is attributed to the bias-voltage dependence of the transit time of electrons across the RTD layers, which results in a voltage-dependent capacitance added to RTD. Theoretical analysis taking into account this transit time is in reasonable agreement with the observed results. Voltage-controlled RTD oscillators in the terahertz range are expected from the theoretical results. A structure suitable for large frequency change is also discussed briefly.

    In order to improve the forward link capacity of cdma2000 HRPD (High Rate Packet Data) or CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, it is significant to overcome multi-path interference. This paper focuses on FDE (Frequency Domain Equalization) with MMSE (Minimum Mean Square Error) criterion. On top of that, backward compatibility with HRPD should be maintained, in other words common channels such as the pilot channel should not be changed. Thus, the PN (Pseudo Noise) spread pilot block without CP (Cyclic Prefix) signals has to be dealt with for FDE. However, this will cause the conventional channel estimation accuracy to deteriorate. In order to improve the estimation accuracy of the conventional method, this paper presents a MRC (Maximal Ratio Combining) spectrum estimator, IPI (Inter-Path Interference) canceller, and path searcher. The results obtained from computer simulations reveal that the proposed method can improve the PER (Packet Error Rate) performance significantly. If compared with Rake combiner and TDE (Time Domain Equalization) with NLMS (Normalized Least Mean Square) scheme, the maximum data rates at a fixed PER of 1% can be increased by 5 to 8 times and 1.25 to 2.67 times, respectively.

    Ultrahigh-speed continuous-tine delta-sigma modulators (DSMs) have been designed by using a fully-differential comparator consisting of resonant-tunneling diodes (RTDs) and HEMTs. Continuous-time lowpass and bandpass filters using HEMTs have also been incorporated to obtain lowpass- and bandpass-type DSMs, respectively. Circuit simulation assuming 0.1-µm InP-based HEMT and RTD technology has revealed a successful operation of the 2nd-order lowpass DSM at a sampling frequency of 20 GHz. The clock frequency was 10 GHz because of the double sampling function of the present comparator. The 2nd-order bandpass DSM has also been designed with a center frequency of 3 GHz. These results clearly show high potential of the present delta-sigma modulators.

    For hybrid Multimedia-on-Demand (MoD) systems which support broadcast, batch and interactive services, the charging scheme employed plays an important role in the delivery of good service quality to users, while also determining the revenue generated for the service provider. In this letter a new charging scheme is proposed. This scheme provides the same quality of service to the users as previous charging schemes while providing higher revenue. Numerical results are presented to evaluate the performance of the new charging scheme in comparison with previous schemes.

    In this letter, we present a simple way of estimating the integer frequency offset of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system over a rapidly time-varying channel. By utilizing the channel responses of neighboring subcarriers within one pilot symbol, the frequency offset estimator is derived. We show by simulation that the proposed estimator can accurately estimate the integer frequency offset with reduced computational burden.

    Developing embedded parallel image processing applications is usually a very hardware-dependent process, often using the single instruction multiple data (SIMD) paradigm, and requiring deep knowledge of the processors used. Furthermore, the application is tailored to a specific hardware platform, and if the chosen hardware does not meet the requirements, it must be rewritten for a new platform. We have proposed the use of design space exploration [9] to find the most suitable hardware platform for a certain application. This requires a hardware-independent program, and we use algorithmic skeletons [5] to achieve this, while exploiting the data parallelism inherent to low-level image processing. However, since different operations run best on different kinds of processors, we need to exploit task parallelism as well. This paper describes how we exploit task parallelism using an asynchronous remote procedure call (RPC) system, optimized for low-memory and sparsely connected systems such as smart cameras. It uses a futures [16]-like model to present a normal imperative C-interface to the user in which the skeleton calls are implicitly parallelized and pipelined. Simulation provides the task dependency graph and performance numbers for the mapping, which can be done at run time to facilitate data dependent branching. The result is an easy to program, platform independent framework which shields the user from the parallel implementation and mapping of his application, while efficiently utilizing on-chip memory and interconnect bandwidth.

  • Plasma Instability and Terahertz Generation in HEMTs Due to Electron Transit-Time Effect

    We study the coupled spatio-temporal variations of the electron density and the electric field (electron plasma oscillations) in high-electron mobility transistors using the developed device model. The excitation of electron plasma oscillations in the terahertz range of frequencies might lead to the emission of terahertz radiation. In the framework of the model developed, we calculate the resonant plasma frequencies and find the conditions for the plasma oscillations self-excitation (plasma instability) We show that the transit-time effect in the high-electric field region near the drain edge of the channel of high-electron mobility transistors can cause the self-excitation of the plasma oscillations. It is shown that the self-excitation of plasma oscillations is possible when the ratio of the electron velocity in the high field region, ud, and the gate length, Lg, i.e., the inverse transit time are sufficiently large in comparison with the electron collision frequency in the gated channel, ν. The transit-time mechanism of plasma instability under consideration can superimpose on the Dyakonov-Shur mechanism predicted previously strongly affecting the conditions of the instability and, hence, terahertz emission. The instability mechanism under consideration might shed light on the origin of terahertz emission from high electron mobility transistors observed in recent experiments.

    Extracting visual motion is very important for understanding dynamic actions and for extracting dynamic events from video sequences. Recently, it was shown that some invariants on motions can be extracted from sequential images and applied for recognizing motions from images viewed from arbitrary viewpoints. Unfortunately, these space-time invariants were limited for planar motions viewed from affine cameras. In this paper, we propose a method for computing space-time invariants on non-planar motions viewed from two perspective cameras. The extracted invariants are applied for distinguishing 3D motions from video sequences viewed from arbitrary viewpoints.

  • High-Speed Calculation of Worst-Case Link Delays in the EDD Connection Admission Control Scheme

    The EDD connection admission control scheme has been proposed for supporting real-time communication in packet-switched networks. In the scheme, when a connection establishment request occurs, the worst-case link delay in each link along the connection is calculated to determine whether the request can be accepted or not. In order to calculate the worst-case link delay, we must perform a check called the point schedulability check for each of some discrete time instants (checkpoints). Therefore when there are many checkpoints, the worst-case link delay calculation is time-consuming. We have proposed a high-speed calculation method. The method finds some checkpoints for which the point schedulability check need not be performed and removes such unnecessary checkpoints in advance before a connection establishment request occurs, and the check is performed for each of the remaining checkpoints after the request occurs. However, the method is not so effective under the situation that the maximum packet length in networks is large, because the method can find few unnecessary checkpoints under the situation. This paper proposes a new high-speed calculation method. We relax the condition which determines whether or not the point schedulability check need not be performed for each checkpoint in our previous method and derive a new condition for finding unnecessary checkpoints. Using the proposed method based on the new condition, we can increase the number of unnecessary checkpoints compared to our previous method. Numerical examples which are obtained by extensive simulation show that the proposed method can attain as much as about 50 times speedup.

  • Efficient Media Synchronization Method for Video Telephony System

    In this letter, we derive an efficient audio/video synchronization method for video telephony. For synchronization, this method does not require any further RTCP packet processing except for the first one. The derived decision rule is far more compact than the conventional method. This decision rule is incorporated in an actual video telephony system adopting Texas Instruments (TI) OMAP 1510 processor and Qualcomm MSM 5500. The computational requirement was compared with the conventional method and through simulations the superiority of the proposed method is proved.

    Time-frequency-selective, i.e., time-variant multipath, fading in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems destroys subcarrier orthogonality, resulting in intercarrier interference (ICI). In general, the previously proposed estimation schemes to resolve this problem are only applicable to slowly time-variant channels or suffer from high complexity due to large-sized matrix inversion. In this letter, we propose and develop efficient symbol estimation schemes, called the iterative sequential neighbor search (ISNS) algorithm and the simplified iterative sequential neighbor search (S-ISNS) algorithm. These algorithms achieve enhanced performances with low complexities, compared to the existing estimation methods.

    In this paper, the voice signal processing module has been designed using the micro processor for the use of fully implantable middle ear devices (F-IMEHD). The voice signal processing module for F-IMEHD should be designed to compensate for the hearing loss of hearing impaired person and have the flexibility for compensating various hearing threshold level. So, the voice signal processing module has been designed and implemented to present the various frequency characteristics using the low-power micro processor, MSP430F169. The different voice signal path to the inner ear entrance was considered so that two voice signal would be combined in-phase using an all pass filter with a constant time-delay to improve the vibration of the ossicles.

  • Joint Transmit Rate, Power and Antenna Allocation for MIMO Systems with Multimedia Traffic

    This paper proposes an adaptive transmission scheme for MIMO systems to provide different bit error rates and transmission rates for multimedia traffic. The adaptive transmission scheme allocates antennas, rate and power jointly according to the feedback information to satisfy the diverse QoS requirements of the multimedia traffic. Furthermore, an efficient search algorithm with low complexity is proposed for practical implementation. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the spectral efficiency while guaranteeing the QoS requirements of multimedia traffic. Moreover, the proposed search algorithm achieves close optimal performance with great complexity reduction.

  • All-Digital Clock Deskew Buffer with Variable Duty Cycles

    An all-digital clock deskew buffer with variable duty cycles is presented. The proposed circuit aligns the input and output clocks with two cycles. A pulsewidth detector using the sequential time-to-digital conversion is employed to detect the duty cycle. The output clock with adjustable duty cycles can be generated. The proposed circuit has been fabricated in a 0.35 µm CMOS technology. The measured duty cycle of the output clock can be adjusted from 30% to 70% in steps of 10%. The operation frequency range is from 400 MHz to 600 MHz.

    In this letter, we evaluate the M-BOK based DS-UWB system that uses a space-time block code (STBC) with Rake receivers in the WPAN environment. The conventional DS-UWB system doesn't ensure receiver reliability for the WPAN envrionment due to multipath fading, while the proposed M-BOK based DS-UWB system employing a STBC can overcome multipath fading causing attenuation of receiver reliability in the WPAN environment. In addition, a simple diversity combining receiver, called PRake receiver, shows the performance similar to that of a ARake receiver using the ideal diversity combining and reduces the receiver complexity.
