  • Tracking Analysis of Adaptive Filters with Data Normalization and Error Nonlinearities

    This paper presents a unified treatment of the tracking analysis of adaptive filters with data normalization and error nonlinearities. The approach we develop is based on the celebrated energy-conservation framework, which investigates the energy flow through each iteration of an adaptive filter. Aside from deriving earlier results in a unified manner, we obtain new performance results for more general filters without restricting the regression data to a particular distribution. Simulations show good agreement with the theoretical findings.

    We propose a composite DCT basis line test signal to evaluate the video quality of a DTV encoder. The proposed composite test signal contains a frame index, a calibration square wave, and 7-field basis signals. The results show that the proposed method may be useful for an in-service video quality verifier, using an ordinary oscilloscope instead of special equipment.

    It has been reported that the temporal change of current during the deposition shows a plateau and a break, similar to those found in a photocurrent profile taken by the time-of-flight technique for the investigation of photocarrier dynamics in condensed matters, enabling the estimation of electrophoretic mobility of colloidal particles in the suspension. The estimation of the electrophoretic mobility from transient current during the deposition by the simple drift model is based on the assumption that a constant electric field is uniformly applied between the positive and negative electrodes. Therefore, it is important to check if this assumption is satisfied. It is also important to measure the temporal evolution of film thickness, because this may give information about uniformity of colloidal size in the suspension. This study addresses these topics and validity of the assumption is confirmed.

  • Survivability Analysis for a Wireless Ad Hoc Network Based on Semi-Markov Model

    Network survivability is defined as the ability of a network keeping connected under failures and/or attacks. In this paper, we propose two stochastic models; binomial model and negative binomial model, to quantify the network survivability and compare them with the existing Poisson model. We give mathematical formulae of approximate network survivability for respective models and use them to carry out the sensitivity analysis on model parameters. Throughout numerical examples it is shown that the network survivability can change drastically when the number of network nodes is relatively small under a severe attack mode which is called the Black hole attack.

  • A Scheme to Update OSPF Network Metrics without Loops while Minimizing Routing Instability Duration

    This letter proposes a scheme to update metrics without loops while minimizing routing instability time in an Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) network. The original OSPF network enters the transient state when metrics are being updated to improve the routing performance, and in this state packets may fall into loops. This may cause packet loss and inefficient network resource utilization. To avoid transient loops, a conventional scheme gives each router a priority that reflects the optimum time for metric update. However, when the updated metrics include both larger and smaller values than the preceding ones, two sequential updating processes, one for larger values and one for smaller values, are required. It takes time to converge on the final metric values in the conventional scheme, given that the interval time between the two processes is not insignificant. The second process starts only when the first process is confirmed to be completed. The interval time including the confirmation time and the time needed to reconfigure the metrics in all routers, lengthens the transient state duration; from several seconds to several tens of seconds. This causes routing instability. The proposed scheme transforms the set of updated metrics into an equivalent set of metrics that are either all larger or all smaller (if changed at all) than the ones before the update. The set of equivalent metrics yield exactly the same results in terms of routing as the conventional scheme, i.e. the result desired by the network operator. The non-mixture update requires only one updating process and so eliminates the interval time. Numerical results indicate that the probability that the proposed scheme can achieve non-mixture update is more than 67% in the networks examined.

  • A 4.7 µA Quiescent Current, 450 mA CMOS Low-Dropout Regulator with Fast Transient Response

    This paper presents a new low-dropout (LDO) regulator with low-quiescent, high-drive and fast-transient performance. This is based on a new composite power transistor composed of a shunt feedback class-AB embedded gain stage and the application of dynamic-biasing schemes to both the error amplifier as well as the composite power transistor. The proposed LDO regulator has been simulated and validated using BSIM3 models and GLOBALFOUNDRIES 0.18-µm CMOS process. The simulation results have shown that the LDO regulator consumes 4.7 µA quiescent current at no load, regulating the output at 1 V from a minimum 1.2 V supply. It is able to deliver up to 450 mA load current with a dropout of 200 mV. It can be stabilized using a 4.7 µF output capacitor with a 0.1 Ω ESR resistor. The maximum transient output voltage is 64.6 mV on the basis of a load step change of 450 mA/10 ns under typical condition. The full load transient response is less than 350 ns.

    A 10-Gbit/s-class ac-coupled average-detection-type burst-mode receiver (B-Rx) with an ultra fast response and a high tolerance to the long consecutive identical digits has been developed. Key features of the circuit design are the baseline-wander common-mode rejection technique and the inverted distortion technique adopted in the limiting amplifier to cope with both the fast response and the high tolerance. Our B-Rx with newly developed limiting amplifier IC achieved a settling time of less than 150 ns, a sensitivity of -29.8 dBm, and a dynamic range of 23.8 dB with a 231-1 pseudo random bit sequences. Moreover, we also describe several potential B-Rx applications. We achieved better performance by applying the proposed systems to our B-Rx.

    This paper presents an accurate and systematic method to simulate the interference imposed on the input/output (I/O) ports of electronic equipment under the electrical fast transients/burst (EFT/B) test. The equivalent circuit of the EFT/B generator and the coupling clamp are modeled respectively. Firstly, a transfer function (TF) of the EFT pulse-forming network is constructed with the latent parameters based on circuit theory. In the TF, two negative real parameters characterize the non-oscillation process of the network while one complex conjugate pair characterizes the damping-oscillation process. The TF of the pulse-forming network is therefore synthesized in the equivalent circuit of the EFT/B generator. Secondly, the standard coupling clamp is modeled based on the scatter (S) parameter obtained by using a vector network analyzer. By applying the vector fitting method during the rational function approximation, a macromodel of the coupling clamp can be obtained and converted to a Spice compatible equivalent circuit. Based on the aforementioned procedures, the interference imposed on the I/O ports can be simulated. The modeling methods are validated experimentally, where the interference in differential mode and common mode is evaluated respectively.

    A regulation of converters connected in parallel is discussed considering their stored energy and passivity characteristics. From the viewpoint of stored energy, a new regulation method to conserve and share the stored energy can be found. The energy stored in inductors and capacitors is transferred to loads so that the load keeps the energy dissipation constant. Though numerical simulation, the method is validated for a parallel converter system.

    In this paper, closed-form analytical equations for the time-domain amplitude of the MOS cross-coupled oscillators are derived. The procedure of the paper is based on estimating an accurate equation for describing the behavior of the cross-coupled MOS configurations and finding a reasonable solution for the nonlinear differential equation governing the circuit. The solution method is presented for a general equation and is valid for all possible second-order oscillators. Both of the long channel and short channel transistor topologies have been investigated. The resulted equations are in a good agreement with simulation results for a wide range of the circuit parameters and enable us to analyze and synthesize the oscillators with the desired transient behavior.

    High luminance and high speed response with the cut-off frequency of more than 50 MHz in multilayer polyfluorene-based light-emitting diodes with an interlayer were achieved. We realized multilayer polyfluorene-based light-emitting diodes for frequency response up to 100 MHz.

    This paper presents two circuits to measure pulse width distribution of single event transients (SETs). We first review requirements for SET measurement in accelerated neutron radiation test and point out problems of previous works, in terms of time resolution, time/area efficiency for obtaining large samples and certainty in absolute values of pulse width. We then devise two measurement circuits and a pulse generator circuit that satisfy all the requirements and attain sub-FO1-inverter-delay resolution, and propose a measurement procedure for assuring the absolute width values. Operation of one of the proposed circuits was confirmed by a radiation experiment of alpha particles with a fabricated test chip.

    Similarities and differences of the thermal analysis issues between the intelligent and general AC contactors are analyzed. Heat source model of the magnet system is established according to the unique control mode of the intelligent AC contactor. Linking with the features common of the two kinds of contactors, the extension of the thermal analysis method of the general AC contactor to the intelligent AC contactor is demonstrated. Consequently, a comprehensive thermal analysis model considering heat sources of both main circuit and magnet system is constructed for the intelligent AC contactor. With this model, the steady-state temperature rise of the intelligent AC contactor is calculated and compared with the measurements of an actual intelligent AC contactor.

    Method for eliminating magnetic saturation in low-voltage and high-current DC-DC converter with fast dynamic response is described. The magnetic saturation is observed in onboard isolated bridge-type DC-DC converter due to inherently asymmetrical PWM signal during transient condition. The saturation is not eliminated by using ac-coupling capacitor for transformer. Mechanism of the saturation is analyzed and confirmed by experiments. Based on the analysis a solution for the magnetic saturation is proposed. The effectiveness of proposed method is also confirmed by experiments.

    This paper presents a novel parallel boost converter using switched capacitors The switches are controlled not only by periodic clock but also by voltage-mode threshold that is a key to realize strong stability, fast transient and variable output. The dynamics is described by a piecewise linear equation, the mapping procedure is applicable and the system operation can be analyzed precisely.

  • Robust Detection of Underwater Transient Signals Using EVRC Noise Suppression Module

    Detection of transient signals is generally done by examining power and spectral variation of the received signal, but it becomes a difficult task when the background noise gets large. In this paper, we propose a robust transient detection algorithm using the EVRC noise suppression module. We define new parameters from the outputs of the EVRC noise suppression module for transient detection. Experimental results with various types of underwater transients have shown that the proposed method outperforms the conventional energy-based method and achieved performance improvement of detection rate by 7% to 15% for various types of background noise.

    A novel modal signal decoupling algorithm for multi-coupled transmission lines is developed. Since the proposed method exploits a set of basis vectors associated with the characteristic impedances of the transmission line system, these multi-coupled signals can be efficiently decoupled regardless of dielectric media and conductors. Thus, compact forms of the signal integrity verification CAD models for multi-coupled transmission lines can be readily determined. It is shown that the analytical models are in excellent agreement with those obtained with SPICE simulation and its computation time is much faster than the conventional macro model (W-model) in the order of two.

    We carried out degradation analysis of a blue phosphorescent organic light emitting diode by both impedance spectroscopy and transient electroluminescence (EL) spectroscopy. The number of semicircles observed in the Cole-Cole plot of the modulus became three to two after the device was operated for 567 hours. Considering the effective layer thickness of the initial and degraded devices did not change by degradation and combining the analysis of the Bode-plot of the imaginary part of the modulus, the relaxation times of emission layer and hole-blocking with electron transport layers changed to nearly the same value by the increase of the resistance of emission layer. Decay time of transient EL of the initial device was coincident with that of the degraded one. These phenomena suggest that no phosphorescence quenching sites are generated in the degraded device, but the number of the emission sites decrease by degradation.

    This paper presents an accurate and systematic method to model the equivalent circuit of pulse generator in the electrical fast transients/burst test (EFT/B). Firstly, a new analytical expression is presented to express the generator's charging and discharging process under open-condition (1000-Ω), which all its coefficients are determined according to the output waveform specified by the manufacturer. And then, with adoption of the step source, the transfer function of the pulse forming network in Laplace domain is deduced, which is ready for the network synthesis. Based on above discussion, the parameterized method and the technique of constant-resistance are adopted for the network synthesis. Finally, the equivalent circuit is renormalized and improved to meet the specification under matching-condition (50-Ω). In this way, the equivalent circuit of EFT/B generator is obtained and can be adjusted conveniently to satisfy the different manufacturers. The PSPICE simulation with a certain load is validated by measurement.

    Using the transient current switch circuit in parallel with the energizing switching contacts for timely control of breaking operation, the increase of contact voltage is suppressed at the last stage of the breaking of electric contacts. Breaking contact voltage Vc and current Ic of electromagnetic relays with Ag contacting electrodes were measured with 12.5-50 V and 0.1-20 A for two hinge springs (Spring constants; 2 N/mm and 0.2 N/mm). The current-decreasing process was clearly measured at the melting voltage Um. After Vc=Um, the breaking time of contact current did not depend on mechanical motion controlled by the two hinge springs and energizing power-supply voltage, but depended on the contact current. The residue of melt electrode was observed optically as a white fusion spot, with radius depending on the energizing current.
