A 5-pole lumped element bandpass filter (BPF) of center frequency 264.05 MHz and fractional bandwidth (FBW) 0.76% is designed and fabricated using YBa2Cu3O7-d (YBCO) thin films deposited on both sides of a MgO substrate(40 mm 40 mm 0.5 mm). The return loss, minimum insertion loss and ripple were measured to be 20.0 dB, less than 0.1 dB and less than 0.1 dB at 70 K, respectively. These results verify both the compactness and low loss characteristics in the VHF band. The simulated frequency response, where the frequency dependences of inductance (L) and capacitance (C) elements and housing effect are taken into account, is in good agreement with the measured frequency response.

This paper outlines technical trend of multimedia mobile and broadband wireless access systems utilizing comprehensive concept and new categorization of wireless access. It is pointed out that mobile communications have much potential market in future high-speed data or IP (Internet Protocol)-based traffic. Categorization of three kinds of wireless access is presented based on the definition adopted by the Radiocommunication Sector in ITU. IMT (International Mobile Telecommunications)-2000 and broadband wireless LANs (Local Area Networks) each representing mobile and nomadic wireless access will bring about a turning point to a new era that wireless communications become dominant media in access networks. With this perspective technical subjects, spectrum consideration and deployment scenario for these systems are discussed.
This paper addresses an important issue on the spreading bandwidth of direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) cellular mobile radio systems: does wider spreading bandwidth provide larger capacity? And if so, to what extent? The capacity of the perfect power controlled reverse link is evaluated by computer simulation for 1.25 MHz and 5 MHz spreading bandwidths under various sets of propagation channel parameters (path loss decay factor, shadowing standard deviation, shadowing correlation, number of resolved propagation paths) and antenna diversity reception.

This paper describes a method of predicting transmission performance to be obtained by applying RAKE reception and parallel transmission in realistic urban multipath environments. Delay profiles measured in metropolitan Tokyo at microwave frequencies were used to obtain the impulse responses of radio channels, and the closed-form equations corresponding to the performance of these anti-multipath techniques were derived, by means of the characteristic function method, under the assumption that the phases of the impulse responses are uniformly distributed. Results show that RAKE reception provides bit error rates 100 times lower than bare transmission does, whereas the improvement obtained by using parallel transmission should be especially valuable in broadband communication systems, such as those operating at data rates above 10 Mb/s.

Design of wireless communications systems with a transmission rate of 6 and 10 Mbit/s is presented for the 2.4 GHz Japanese ISM band, in which a spread spectrum technique named "CFO-SS (Carrier Frequency Offset-Spread Spectrum)" scheme is employed. In the CFO-SS system, a single PN code is commonly assigned to all the synchronized multiplexed carriers, and the frequency separation between carriers is determined by the transmission rate of each carrier. To realize the CFO-SS system, a timing acquisition and tracking scheme, an important part of the design, is presented first. Next, bit and packet error performance is investigated under severe multipath environments with/without a RAKE receiver. Degradation by channel bandwidth limitations, frequency inaccuracy of the hardware and co-channel interference (CCI) is also investigated by computer simulation. Simulation results presented confirmed sufficient performance of the CFO-SS system for wireless LAN systems using the 2.4 GHz ISM band.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals suffer nonlinear distortion within the transmitter, in the high-power amplifiers in particular. This paper proposes a nonlinear distortion compensation technique for OFDM signals, which incorporates a baseband predistortion with a constant peak-power OFDM (CP-OFDM). CP-OFDM fixes the envelope-peak amplitude to a constant value while maintaining the linearity of the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) outputs; consequently, the baseband predistorter entirely compensates the nonlinear distortion. Simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed technique significantly reduces out-of-band power emission and adjacent channel interference (ACI) more than 10 dB respectively.

Newer off-chip DRAM families, including Synchronous DRAMs (SDRAMs) and RAMBUS DRAMs (RDRAMs), are becoming standard choices for the design of high-performance systems. Although previous work in High-Level Synthesis (HLS) has addressed exploiting features of page-mode DRAMs, techniques do not exist for exploiting the two key features of these newer DRAM families that boost memory performance and help overcome bandwidth limitations: (1) burst mode access, and (2) interleaved access through multiple banks. We address pre-synthesis optimizations on the input behavior that extract and exploit the burst mode and multiple bank interleaved access modes of these newer DRAM families, so that these features can be exploited fully during the HLS trajectory. Our experiments, run on a suite of memory-intensive benchmarks using a contemporary SDRAM library, demonstrate significant performance improvements of up to 62.5% over the naive approach, and improvements of up to 16.7% over the previous approach that considered only page-mode or extended-data-out (EDO) DRAMS.

In this letter, the probability of error performance improvements by rain fade countermeasure techniques is analyzed in a Ka-band geostationary satellite communication system using synchronous CDMA scheme, when power control and macrodiversity are used as rain fade countermeasures. Numerical results show that the composite power control plus macroscopic selection diversity system is better than that of utilizing only one technique as a countermeasure of rain fading.

A fully on-chip current controlled open-drain output driver using a bandgap reference current generator was designed for high bandwidth DRAMs. It reduces the overhead of receiving a digital code from an external source for the compensation of the temperature and supply voltage variations. The correct value of the current control register is updated at the end of every auto refresh cycle. The operation at the data rate up to 0.8 Gb/s was verified by SPICE simulation using a 0.22 µm triple-well CMOS technology.

Wireless communication systems are affected by several factors in the indoor environment. The complexity of this environment, however, has hampered the development of methods for analyzing it. Reported here is our investigation of the relationship between the propagation characteristics and performance of a 2.4-GHz ISM-band wireless LAN in various indoor environments. Our objective was to develop guidelines for designing ideal indoor environments for wireless LANs. A booth constructed of a ceiling, floor, and wall materials that could be changed was used for our investigation. The transmission loss and delay spread were measured for four environments; they were calculated by using a ray-tracing method to verify the effectiveness of the ray tracing calculation. The throughput and BER characteristics were measured for the same environments. The following results were obtained. (1) The transmission loss and delay spread could be estimated by using this ray tracing method because the deviations between the calculated and measured data were within 5 dB for the transmission loss and within 10 ns for the delay spread. (2) Reflections from the walls caused a serious interference problem: throughput was 0.0 at more than 30% of the positions along the center line of the booth when the walls were constructed of high-reflection-coefficient material. (3) The throughput and BER were closely correlated with the delay spread; the number of positions meeting a certain throughput was estimated by the method based on the delay spread calculated using the ray tracing method. It was within 10% of the number measured. The results obtained can be used to design ideal indoor environments for 2.4-GHz ISM-band LAN systems.

In the present paper we shall examine the real-time restoration of biomedical signals under additive noises. Biomedical signals measured by instruments such as catheter manometers, ambulatory electrocardiographs and thermo-dilution sensors are susceptible to distortion and noise. Therefore, such signals must be restored to their original states. In the present study, nonstationary biomedical signals are observed and described using a mathematical model, and several restoration filters that are composed of a series of applications of this model are proposed. These filters restored band-limited approximations of the original signals in real-time. In addition, redundancy is introduced into these restoration filters in order to suppress additive noise. Finally, an optimum filter that accounts for restoration error and additive noise is proposed.
In this paper we propose a heterogeneous agents model that represents speculative dynamics by using the synergetic approach. We consider the markets for three securities (a stock, a bond, and a foreign currency). Each market consists of two typical types of investors: fundamentalists and bandwagon traders. We show the characteristic patterns of speculative prices (speculative bubbles and speculative chaos) which are generated by trading between the fundamentalists and bandwagon traders.
In the literature [9], the optimum discrete interpolation of one-dimensional signals is presented which minimizes various measures of approximation error simultaneously. In the discussion, the ratio λ of the weighted norm of the approximation error and that of the corresponding input signal plays an essential role to determine the structure of the set of signals. However, only the upper bound of λ is provided in [9]. In this paper, we will present more exact and systematic discussion of the optimum discrete interpolation of one-dimensional signals which minimizes various measures of approximation error at the same time. In this discussion, we will prove that the exact value of λ is identical with the upper limit, for ω (|ω| π), of the largest eigen value of a matrix including the weighting function W(ω) and the Fourier transforms of the optimum interpolation functions. Further, we will give a sufficient condition for W(ω) under which the ratio λ is equal to one, where the approximation error, if it is interpolated by sinc, is included in the set of band-limited signals defined by W(ω). Finally, as application of the presented approximation, we will propose a direction to interactive signal processing on Internet and a transmultiplexer system included in it. The transmultiplexer system included in this discussion can realize flexible arrangement of sub-bands which is inevitable in realizing the above proposal on interactive signal processing.

We propose a novel planar filter design for narrow-band applications. The filter consists of half-wavelength ring resonators with open gaps. This design has three advantages over conventional planar designs: a smaller size despite narrow bandwidth, a sharper skirt response at the passband edge without notch, an excellent out-band attenuation. We demonstrated these advantages by fabricating an 8-poles filter centered at 1.95 GHz with a 5 MHz bandwidth using YBCO films on a 2 inch diameter MgO substrate.

There is currently a need for development of a new frequency band to enable creation of next-generation mobile communication systems. Of the potential bands, the 3 GHz and over microwave band holds the greatest promise. Experimental studies on the delay characteristics of multipath propagation must be conducted in order to achieve high-speed transmission in the microwave band. We have developed a system for measuring the microwave broadband propagation delay profile over 100 MHz spread bandwidths in the 3, 8 and 15 GHz bands. Our experiments confirmed system performances of 20-ns resolution, 40-µs maximum measurable delay, relative amplitude error of within 3 dB and dynamic range of over 60 dB. We used our system to measure delay profiles on an urban area with line of sight, particularly, in terms of the effects of mobile antenna height. Typical examples are presented. Analysis showed that delay spreads increased with transmit/receive distance and decreased with the higher antenna height.

Coupling effects between resonators on a laminated Band Elimination Filter (BEF) is studied. The coupling degrades the filter attenuation performance. A new equivalent circuit of coupled-line BEF with loaded capacitors is investigated. The performance is simulated and the improvement by staggered resonators is confirmed. An experimental filter made of Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramics (LTCC) is constructed. It shows good performance.
Microstrip leaky-wave antenna fed by an aperture-coupled microstrip operating at K-band is presented. Using the aperture-coupled microstrip as a feeding structure can fully exploit the wideband characteristic of the microstrip leaky-wave antenna. The dimensions of the antenna are obtained from the calculation of the propagation characteristics. Measurement shows a bandwidth of 22% for VSWR < 2:1 and a peak power gain of 12 dBi at 22 GHz for one element. Four-element array is developed with a gain of 18.7 dBi and the frequency-scanning feature is exhibited. The waveguide model is verified by measuring the 3-D radiation pattern of the microstrip leaky-wave array.

In this paper, a novel design method for bandpass filter with attenuation poles (BAP) is presented. The changed inverter element values due to inserting either capacitors or inductors can be optimized using the linear relationship between inverter element values of a conventional bandpass filter (BPF) and those of the BAP using the Touchstone program. A 1800-1825 MHz bandpass filter with attenuation poles for duplexers is designed and fabricated using coaxial dielectric resonators. The validity of this design approach is demonstrated by a computer simulation. The resonators are simulated equivalently as shorted lossy transmission lines. The measured results of center frequency, bandwidth, and attenuation pole frequencies closely agree with the design values.

A novel dual-band internal antenna similar in size to the single-band internal antenna for cellular handsets is proposed. Our approach to realize a small and low-profile dual-band internal antenna is to use the dominant mode (TM10 mode) and the higher-order mode (TM30 mode). In order to use this approach for recent dual-band cellular systems it is necessary to lower the resonant frequency of the higher-order mode (TM30 mode). This motivated our development of a new antenna configuration with a slot on the radiation element of a quarter-wavelength shorted microstrip antenna to lower the resonant frequency of the TM30 mode. In this paper, the experimental and the analytical results for this antenna are presented. In the results, by adjusting the location and the length of the slot, the dual-frequency operation can be achieved with the frequency ratio (TM30 mode/TM10 mode) from 2 to 3. In addition, the enhancement of bandwidth is presented.
