There is currently a need for development of a new frequency band to enable creation of next-generation mobile communication systems. Of the potential bands, the 3 GHz and over microwave band holds the greatest promise. Experimental studies on the delay characteristics of multipath propagation must be conducted in order to achieve high-speed transmission in the microwave band. We have developed a system for measuring the microwave broadband propagation delay profile over 100 MHz spread bandwidths in the 3, 8 and 15 GHz bands. Our experiments confirmed system performances of 20-ns resolution, 40-µs maximum measurable delay, relative amplitude error of within 3 dB and dynamic range of over 60 dB. We used our system to measure delay profiles on an urban area with line of sight, particularly, in terms of the effects of mobile antenna height. Typical examples are presented. Analysis showed that delay spreads increased with transmit/receive distance and decreased with the higher antenna height.

In this paper, a novel design method for bandpass filter with attenuation poles (BAP) is presented. The changed inverter element values due to inserting either capacitors or inductors can be optimized using the linear relationship between inverter element values of a conventional bandpass filter (BPF) and those of the BAP using the Touchstone program. A 1800-1825 MHz bandpass filter with attenuation poles for duplexers is designed and fabricated using coaxial dielectric resonators. The validity of this design approach is demonstrated by a computer simulation. The resonators are simulated equivalently as shorted lossy transmission lines. The measured results of center frequency, bandwidth, and attenuation pole frequencies closely agree with the design values.

An intrinsic property of a tapped resonator is elucidated here, and a novel bandpass filter (BPF) with improved skirt characteristics based on a tapped half-wavelength resonator is proposed by this intrinsic property. "Tapping" for both I/O and interstage couplings of the resonator is the key concept here because a resulting open-ended resonator makes shunt open stubs which give anti-resonance near the center frequency. Multiple attenuation poles appear near the center frequency, namely, close to the passband. A BPF is designed on the basis of the general filter theory with a narrow band approximation. An experiment is carried out to confirm the concept by using a coplanar structure. The expected bandpass characteristics with multiple attenuation poles have been obtained by the novel BPF designed by the present concept.

A 60-GHz-band monolithic HEMT amplifier for which BCB thin film layers are adopted on GaAs substrate has been developed. The MMIC utilized a thin film microstrip line for the bias circuit and a coplanar waveguide for the RF circuit. The coplanar waveguide has the advantage of low loss, whereas the thin film microstrip line has the advantage of small size. Two different types of transmission lines were selected to coexist in the monolithic amplifier. As a result, the MMIC achieved high gain over a wider frequency range at a small size. This MMIC had a gain of over 15 dB in a frequency bandwidth of 11 GHz. In particular, the high-frequency characteristics of the transmission lines and the HEMTs were evaluated in detail for the conventional MMIC structure and the new MMIC structure. It was confirmed that this newly developed MMIC using BCB thin film layers is attractive for millimeter-wave applications.

The full-band Monte Carlo technique is currently the most accurate device simulation method, but its usefulness is limited because it is very CPU intensive. This work describes efficient algorithms in detail, which raise the efficiency of the full-band Monte Carlo method to a level where it becomes applicable in the device design process beyond exemplary simulations. The k-space is discretized with a nonuniform tetrahedral grid, which minimizes the discretization error of the linear energy interpolation and memory requirements. A consistent discretization of the inverse mass tensor is utilized to formulate efficient transport parameter estimators. Particle scattering is modeled in such a way that a very fast rejection technique can be used for the generation of the final state eliminating the main cause of the inefficiency of full-band Monte Carlo simulations. The developed full-band Monte Carlo simulator is highly efficient. For example, in conjunction with the nonself-consistent simulation technique CPU times of a few CPU minutes per bias point are achieved for substrate current calculations. Self-consistent calculations of the drain current of a 60nm-NMOSFET take about a few CPU hours demonstrating the feasibility of full-band Monte Carlo simulations.

The ATM Forum specifies several fairness criteria, thus the scheduling mechanisms should allocate enough bandwidth to each connection to achieve one of such fairness criteria. However, two fairness criteria (MCR plus equal share, maximum of MCR or Max-Min share) cannot be achieved by conventional scheduling mechanisms. In this letter, we have developed new scheduling mechanisms that achieve these fairness criteria. We also present simulation results to show that our mechanisms can allocate bandwidth fairly.

Even though information in ATM networks is handled as fixed-sized packets (cells), packet-based scheduling is still needed in ATM networks. This letter proposes a packet-based scheduling mechanism that is based on comparison between a packet-based queue and a virtual queue that represents the queue length provided by a cell-based scheduling mechanism. Simulation results showed that this proposed scheduling allocates the bandwidth fairly to each connection.

In this paper, the Lapped Orthogonal Transform (LOT) with unequal length basis function is considered. The proposed unequal length LOT (ULLOT) has both long basis of length 2M and short basis of length M, while the lengths of all bases of the conventional LOT are 2M. A new class of LOT can be constructed with some modifications of Malvar's Fast LOT. Therefore, the fast algorithm for the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) will surely facilitate the computation of the ULLOT. Although the computational complexity of the ULLOT is always lower than that of the LOT, there exist some cases where the coding gain of the ULLOT becomes slightly higher than that of the LOT. Its ability to reduce ringing artifacts is an attractive feature as well. The size-limited structure for the finite length signal is investigated and the ULLOTs are tested on image coding application. The simulation results confirm the validity of the proposed ULLOT.

We propose an H-plane manifold-type triplexer with closely arranged junctions. Broadband characteristics for each bands are obtained by arranging filters closely near the end of the common waveguide. Three fundamental and sufficient parameters are introduced for numerical optimizations to determine the configuration of the broadband triplexer. The configuration including closely arranged junctions requires an generalized scattering matrix (GS matrix) of an asymmetric cross junction to simulate and design. We expand the mode matching technique (MMT) to be able to analyze this kind of discontinuities by joining two asymmetric steps discontinuities to a symmetric cross junction. This is suitable expressions for numerical calculations. The characteristics of the whole triplexer are obtained by cascading GS matrices of the corresponding discontinuities. The experimental results of the fabricated triplexer were compared with the simulated data, and the results agree well with the simulated one. The characteristics of the fabricated triplexer satisfy the request of the broad band operation and high power-handling capability.

Packet contention is one of the fundamental problems that must be overcome in designing packet switches. In banyan network, which has multistage interconnection structure of many small switch elements, we must be concerned with output port conflicts and internal collisions. Dilated banyan network which provides multiple path for internal link can reduce packet loss due to internal collisions in loss system. However, under hot-spot traffic higher packet loss probability is measured at the hot-spot port and the ports close to the hot-spot as coefficient h increases due to the heavy traffic to hot-spot port. In order to moderate the packet loss probability at the hot-spot port we propose the method to disperse the packets which concentrate on the hot-spot route by altering address field of a half of incoming packets. These packets are switched along detour routes. Thus, the traffic concentration toward hot-spot is mitigated and the packet loss probability at the hot-spot port is moderated.

A new simple method for extracting the capacitance coupling coefficients of sub-0.5-µm flash memory cells is proposed. Different from the previously proposed methods, this method is not affected by a dopant profile of source region because a band-to-band tunneling current from the interface between the drain and the substrate is probed. Use of a reference device eliminates the necessity to make assumptions concerning the electron transport mechanism. Comparison with the other methods shows that the proposed method is simple and accurate.

This paper presents a high-speed CAC scheme, called PERB CAC (CAC based on Prior Estimation for Residual Bandwidth). This scheme estimates the residual bandwidth in advance by generating virtual requests for connection. When an actual new request occurs, PERB CAC can instantaneously judge if the required bandwidth is larger than the estimated residual bandwidth. PERB CAC provides very rapid response time both for statistical and deterministic bandwidth allocation services, while keeping statistical multiplexing gain for the former service. Numerical results indicate that PERB CAC provides reasonably accurate and conservative values of residual bandwidth. In addition, by using PERB CAC, both services are able to be accommodated into a single VP. VP capacity control is more relaxed than is true with conventional VP-separation management. This is another merit of PERB CAC. Therefore, PERB CAC can achieve high-speed connection set-up while utilizing network resources in a cost-effective manner.

We experimentally demonstrate the ultrafast and high-repetition capabilities of a polarization-discriminating symmetric Mach-Zehnder (PD-SMZ) all-optical switch. This switch, as well as an original symmetric Mach-Zehnder (SMZ) all-optical switch, is based on a highly efficient but slowly relaxing band-filling effect that is resonantly excited in a passive InGaAsP bulk waveguide. By using a mechanism that cancels out the effect of the slow relaxation, ultrafast switching is attained. We achieve a switching time of 200 fs and demultiplexing of 1.5 Tbps, showing the applicability of the SMZ or PD-SMZ all-optical switches to optical demultiplexing of well over 1 Tbps for the first time. High-repetition capability, which is another important issue apart from the switching speed, is also verified by using control pulses at a repetition rate of 10.5 GHz. We also discuss the use of nonlinearity in a semiconductor optical amplifier to further reduce the control-pulse energy.

This paper proposes a 3-stage ATM switch architecture that uses optical WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) grouped links and dynamic bandwidth sharing. The proposed architecture has two features. The first is the use of WDM technology which makes the number of cables used in the system proportional to system size. The second is the use of dynamic bandwidth sharing among WDM grouped links. This prevents the statistical multiplexing gain offered by WDM from falling even if switching system becomes large. A performance evaluation confirms the scaleability and cost-effectiveness of the proposed architecture. It is scaleable in terms of the number of cables and admissible load. We show how the appropriate wavelength signal speed can be determined to implement the switch in a cost-effective manner. Therefore, the proposed architecture will suit future high-speed multimedia ATM networks.

Recent work in the area of ultrafast optical time-division multiplexed (OTDM) networking at MIT Lincoln Laboratory is presented. A scalable helical local area network or HLAN architecture, presented elsewhere as an architecture well-suited to ultrafast OTDM LANs and MANs, is considered in the context of wide area networking. Two issues arise in scaling HLAN to the wide area. The first is protocol extension, and the second is supporting the required bandwidth on the long-haul links. In this paper we discuss these challenges and describe progress made in both architecture and technologies required for scaling HLAN to the wide area.

The optimistic analytical results for performance analysis of buffered banyan networks are mainly due to certain independence assumptions used for simplifying analysis. To capture more effects of cell correlation, a refined analytical model for both single-buffered and multiple buffered banyan networks is proposed in this paper. When cell output contention occurs at a 2 2 switch element, two contention resolution schemes are used. One is based on randomly choosing the winning cell and another is to give priority to the cell which has been delayed in the current buffer for at least one stage cycle. The switch throughput, cell transfer delay and cell delay deviation for single-buffered banyan networks with and without using priority scheme are derived. Then the model is generalized to multiple buffered banyan networks where analytical expressions for throughput and delay are obtained. We show that using the priority scheme the cell delay deviation is reduced and the influence on throughput performance is insignificant. The results obtained from our analytical model are compared with the simulations and good agreement is observed. Comparisons with some proposed analytical models in the literature reveal that our model is more accurate and powerful in predicting the performance of buffered banyan networks.

Basic characteristics of a short-ended coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonator of good spurious suppression property is studied. The resonator is loaded with open tubs at its middle position and makes a fully planar structure. The length of the resonator is shortened almost by half and the first spurious resonance goes up to more than 3 times of the fundamental resonant frequency without degradation of unloaded Q(Q0). The origin and property of spurious response is thoroughly investigated to show the advantage and the limit of this configuration. The external Q(Qe) and fundamental resonant frequency of the resonator are also clarified theoretically and experimentally. Using those result, a bandpass filter (BPF) is designed on the basis of the narrow band approximation is realized and its transmission characteristics are examined theoretically and experimentally. The spurious suppression characteristics have been realized by the present filter in accordance with the expectation.
