Convolutional neural network (CNN) has a high recognition rate in image recognition and are used in embedded systems such as smartphones, robots and self-driving cars. Low-end FPGAs are candidates for embedded image recognition platforms because they achieve real-time performance at a low cost. However, CNN has significant parameters called weights and internal data called feature maps, which pose a challenge for FPGAs for performance and memory capacity. To solve these problems, we exploit a split-CNN and weight sparseness. The split-CNN reduces the memory footprint by splitting the feature map into smaller patches and allows the feature map to be stored in the FPGA's high-throughput on-chip memory. Weight sparseness reduces computational costs and achieves even higher performance. We designed a dedicated architecture of a sparse CNN and a memory buffering scheduling for a split-CNN and implemented this on the PYNQ-Z1 FPGA board with a low-end FPGA. An experiment on classification using VGG16 shows that our implementation is 3.1 times faster than the GPU, and 5.4 times faster than an existing FPGA implementation.

Hardware accelerators are designed to support a specialized processing dataflow for everchanging deep neural networks (DNNs) under various processing environments. This paper introduces two hardware properties to describe the cost of data movement in each memory hierarchy. Based on the hardware properties, this paper proposes a set of evaluation metrics that are able to evaluate the number of memory accesses and the required memory capacity according to the specialized processing dataflow. Proposed metrics are able to analytically predict energy, throughput, and area of a hardware design without detailed implementation. Once a processing dataflow and constraints of hardware resources are determined, the proposed evaluation metrics quickly quantify the expected hardware benefits, thereby reducing design time.

Human gait analysis has been widely used in medical and health fields. It is essential to extract spatio-temporal gait features (e.g., single support duration, step length, and toe angle) by partitioning the gait phase and estimating the footprint position/orientation in such fields. Therefore, we propose a method to partition the gait phase given a foot position sequence using mutually constrained piecewise linear approximation with dynamic programming, which not only represents normal gait well but also pathological gait without training data. We also propose a method to detect footprints by accumulating toe edges on the floor plane during stance phases, which enables us to detect footprints more clearly than a conventional method. Finally, we extract four spatial/temporal gait parameters for accuracy evaluation: single support duration, double support duration, toe angle, and step length. We conducted experiments to validate the proposed method using two types of gait patterns, that is, healthy and mimicked hemiplegic gait, from 10 subjects. We confirmed that the proposed method could estimate the spatial/temporal gait parameters more accurately than a conventional skeleton-based method regardless of the gait pattern.

We propose an algorithm for the constrained design of FIR filters with sparse coefficients. In general filter design approaches, as the length of the filter increases, the number of multipliers used to construct the filter increases. This is a serious problem, especially in two-dimensional FIR filter designs. The FIR filter coefficients designed by the least-squares method with peak error constraint are optimal in the sense of least-squares within a given order, but not necessarily optimal in terms of constructing a filter that meets the design specification under the constraints on the number of coefficients. That is, a higher-order filter with several zero coefficients can construct a filter that meets the specification with a smaller number of multipliers. We propose a two-step approach to design constrained sparse FIR filters. Our method minimizes the number of non-zero coefficients while the frequency response of the filter that meets the design specification. It achieves better performance in terms of peak error than conventional constrained least-squares designs with the same or higher number of multipliers in both one-dimensional and two-dimensional filter designs.

Linear programming (LP) decoding based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) has proved to be effective for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. However, for high-density parity-check (HDPC) codes, the ADMM-LP decoder encounters two problems, namely a high-density check matrix in HDPC codes and a great number of pseudocodewords in HDPC codes' fundamental polytope. The former problem makes the check polytope projection extremely complex, and the latter one leads to poor frame error rates (FER) performance. To address these issues, we introduce the even vertex algorithm (EVA) into the ADMM-LP decoding algorithm for HDPC codes, named as HDPC-EVA. HDPC-EVA can reduce the complexity of the projection process and improve the FER performance. We further enhance the proposed decoder by the automorphism groups of codes, creating diversity in the parity-check matrix. The simulation results show that the proposed decoder is capable of cutting down the average decoding time for each iteration by 30%-60%, as well as achieving near maximum likelihood (ML) performance on some BCH codes.

Service composition optimization is a classic NP-hard problem. How to quickly select high-quality services that meet user needs from a large number of candidate services is a hot topic in cloud service composition research. An efficient second-order beetle swarm optimization is proposed with a global search ability to solve the problem of cloud service composition optimization in this study. First, the beetle antennae search algorithm is introduced into the modified particle swarm optimization algorithm, initialize the population bying using a chaotic sequence, and the modified nonlinear dynamic trigonometric learning factors are adopted to control the expanding capacity of particles and global convergence capability. Second, modified secondary oscillation factors are incorporated, increasing the search precision of the algorithm and global searching ability. An adaptive step adjustment is utilized to improve the stability of the algorithm. Experimental results founded on a real data set indicated that the proposed global optimization algorithm can solve web service composition optimization problems in a cloud environment. It exhibits excellent global searching ability, has comparatively fast convergence speed, favorable stability, and requires less time cost.

In an amusement park, an attraction-visiting route considering the waiting time and traveling time improves visitors' satisfaction and experience. We focus on Ising machines to solve the problem, which are recently expected to solve combinatorial optimization problems at high speed by mapping the problems to Ising models or quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) models. We propose a mapping of the visiting-route recommendation problem in amusement parks to a QUBO model for solving it using Ising machines. By using an actual Ising machine, we could obtain feasible solutions one order of magnitude faster with almost the same accuracy as the simulated annealing method for the visiting-route recommendation problem.

Applications of continuous-time (CT) comparator include relaxation oscillators, pulse width modulators, and so on. CT comparator receives a differential input and outputs a strobe ideally when the differential input crosses zero. Unlike the DT comparators with positive feedback circuit, amplifiers consuming static power must be employed in CT comparators to amplify the input signal. Therefore, minimization of comparator delay under the constraint of power consumption often becomes an issue. This paper analyzes transient behavior of a CT comparator. Using “constant delay approximation”, the comparator delay is derived as a function of input slew rate, number of stages of the preamplifier, and device parameters in each block. This paper also discusses optimum design of the CT comparator. The condition for minimum comparator delay is derived with keeping power consumption constant. The results include that the optimum DC gain of the preamplifier is e∼e3 per stage depending on the element which dominates load capacitance of the preamplifier.

Iterative block decision feedback equalization with hard-decision feedback (HD-IBDFE) was proposed for single-carrier transmission with frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE). The detection performance hinges upon not only error propagation, but also the accuracy of estimating the parameters used to re-compute the equalizer coefficients at each iteration. In this paper, we use the erasure zone (EZ) to de-emphasize the feedback values when the hard decisions are not reliable. EZ use also enables a more accurate, and yet computationally more efficient, parameter estimation method than HD-IBDFE. We show that the resulting equalizer coefficients share the same mathematical form as that of the HD-IBDFE, thereby preserving the merit of not requiring matrix inverse operations in calculating the equalizer coefficients. Simulations show that, by using the EZ and the proposed parameter estimation method, a significant performance improvement over the conventional HD-IBDFE can be achieved, but with lower complexity.

We investigate an interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) using multiple users' gaze information when users partially participate in each design evaluation. Many previous IEC systems have a problem that user evaluation loads are too large. Hence, we proposed to employ user gaze information for evaluating designs generated by IEC systems in order to solve this problem. In this proposed system, users just view the presented designs, not assess, then the system automatically creates users' favorite designs. With the user's gaze information, the proposed system generates coordination that can satisfy many users. In our previous study, we verified the effectiveness of the proposed system from a real system operation viewpoint. However, we did not consider the fluctuation of the users during a solution candidate evaluation. In the actual operation of the proposed system, users may change during the process due to the user interchange. Therefore, in this study, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed system when varying the users participating in each evaluation for each generation. In the experiment, we employ two types of situations as assumed in real environments. The first situation changes the number of users evaluating the designs for each generation. The second situation employs various users from the predefined population to evaluate the designs for each generation. From the experimental results in the first situation, we confirm that, despite the change in the number of users during the solution candidate evaluation, the proposed system can generate coordination to satisfy many users. Also, from the results in the second situation, we verify that the proposed system can also generate coordination which both users who participate in the coordination evaluation can more satisfy.

DAIHINMIN, which means Grand Pauper, is a popular playing-card game in Japan. TANHINMIN is a simplified variant of DAIHINMIN, which was proposed by Nishino in 2007 in order to investigate the mathematical properties of DAIHINMIN. In this paper, we consider a 2-player generalized TANHINMIN, where the deck size is arbitrary n. We present a linear-time algorithm that determines which player has a winning strategy after all cards are distributed to the players.

We developed a Nb 4-layer process for fabricating superconducting integrated circuits that involves using caldera planarization to increase the flexibility and reliability of the fabrication process. We call this process the planarized high-speed standard process (PHSTP). Planarization enables us to flexibly adjust most of the Nb and SiO2 film thicknesses; we can select reduced film thicknesses to obtain larger mutual coupling depending on the application. It also reduces the risk of intra-layer shorts due to etching residues at the step-edge regions. We describe the detailed process flows of the planarization for the Josephson junction layer and the evaluation of devices fabricated with PHSTP. The results indicated no short defects or degradation in junction characteristics and good agreement between designed and measured inductances and resistances. We also developed single-flux-quantum (SFQ) and adiabatic quantum-flux-parametron (AQFP) logic cell libraries and tested circuits fabricated with PHSTP. We found that the designed circuits operated correctly. The SFQ shift-registers fabricated using PHSTP showed a high yield. Numerical simulation results indicate that the AQFP gates with increased mutual coupling by the planarized layer structure increase the maximum interconnect length between gates.

A universal interconnection network implements arbitrary interconnections among n terminals. This paper considers a problem to realize such a network using contact switches. When n=2, it can be implemented with a single switch. The number of different connections among n terminals is given by the Bell number B(n). The Bell number shows the total number of methods to partition n distinct elements. For n=2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, the corresponding Bell numbers are 2, 5, 15, 52, and 203, respectively. This paper shows a method to realize an n terminal universal interconnection network with $ rac {3}{8}(n^2-1)$ contact switches when n=2m+1≥5, and $ rac {n}{8}(3n+2)$ contact switches, when n=2m≥6. Also, it shows that a lower bound on the number of contact switches to realize an n-terminal universal interconnection network is ⌈log 2B(n)⌉, where B(n) is the Bell number.

Copper sulfide nanoparticles were successfully prepared by laser ablation in liquid. CuS powders in deionized water were irradiated with nanosecond-pulsed laser (Nd:YAG, SHG) to prepare nanoparticles. Prepared nanoparticles were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and fluorospectrometer. According to the results of SEM and DLS, the primary and secondary particle size was decreased with the increase in laser fluence of laser ablation in liquid. The ratio of Cu and S of prepared nanoparticles were not changed. The absorbance of prepared copper sulfide nanoparticles in water was increased with the increase in laser fluence.

As scientific and technological resources are experiencing information overload, it is quite expensive to find resources that users are interested in exactly. The personalized recommendation system is a good candidate to solve this problem, but data sparseness and the cold starting problem still prevent the application of the recommendation system. Sparse data affects the quality of the similarity measurement and consequently the quality of the recommender system. In this paper, we propose a matrix factorization recommendation algorithm based on similarity calculation(SCMF), which introduces potential similarity relationships to solve the problem of data sparseness. A penalty factor is adopted in the latent item similarity matrix calculation to capture more real relationships furthermore. We compared our approach with other 6 recommendation algorithms and conducted experiments on 5 public data sets. According to the experimental results, the recommendation precision can improve by 2% to 9% versus the traditional best algorithm. As for sparse data sets, the prediction accuracy can also improve by 0.17% to 18%. Besides, our approach was applied to patent resource exploitation provided by the wanfang patents retrieval system. Experimental results show that our method performs better than commonly used algorithms, especially under the cold starting condition.

Aiming at the problem that traditional text-level sentiment analysis methods usually ignore the emotional tendency corresponding to the object or attribute. In this paper, a novel two-stage fine-grained text-level sentiment analysis model based on syntactic rule matching and deep semantics is proposed. Based on analyzing the characteristics and difficulties of fine-grained sentiment analysis, a two-stage fine-grained sentiment analysis algorithm framework is constructed. In the first stage, the objects and its corresponding opinions are extracted based on syntactic rules matching to obtain preliminary objects and opinions. The second stage based on deep semantic network to extract more accurate objects and opinions. Aiming at the problem that the extraction result contains multiple objects and opinions to be matched, an object-opinion matching algorithm based on the minimum lexical separation distance is proposed to achieve accurate pairwise matching. Finally, the proposed algorithm is evaluated on several public datasets to demonstrate its practicality and effectiveness.

Recent trends in designing filters involve development of sparse filters with coefficients that not only have real but also zero values. These sparse filters can achieve a high performance through optimizing the selection of the zero coefficients and computing the real (non-zero) coefficients. Designing an infinite impulse response (IIR) sparse filter is more challenging than designing a finite impulse response (FIR) sparse filter. Therefore, studies on the design of IIR sparse filters have been rare. In this study, we consider IIR filters whose coefficients involve zero value, called sparse IIR filter. First, we formulate the design problem as a linear programing problem without imposing any stability condition. Subsequently, we reformulate the design problem by altering the error function and prepare several possible denominator polynomials with stable poles. Finally, by incorporating these methods into successive thinning algorithms, we develop a new design algorithm for the filters. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, its performance is compared with that of other existing methods.

In this paper, we propose a robust parameters estimation algorithm for channel coded systems based on the low-density parity-check (LDPC) code over fading channels with impulse noise. The estimated parameters are then used to generate bit log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) for a soft-inputLDPC decoder. The expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is used to estimate the parameters, including the channel gain and the parameters of the Bernoulli-Gaussian (B-G) impulse noise model. The parameters can be estimated accurately and the average number of iterations of the proposed algorithm is acceptable. Simulation results show that over a wide range of impulse noise power, the proposed algorithm approaches the optimal performance under different Rician channel factors and even under Middleton class-A (M-CA) impulse noise models.

On the Internet, there are lots of unused domain names that are not used for any actual services. Domain parking is a monetization mechanism for displaying online advertisements in such unused domain names. Some domain names used in cyber attacks are known to leverage domain parking services after the attack. However, the temporal relationships between domain parking services and malicious domain names have not been studied well. In this study, we investigated how malicious domain names using domain parking services change over time. We conducted a large-scale measurement study of more than 66.8 million domain names that have used domain parking services in the past 19 months. We reveal the existence of 3,964 domain names that have been malicious after using domain parking. We further identify what types of malicious activities (e.g., phishing and malware) such malicious domain names tend to be used for. We also reveal the existence of 3.02 million domain names that utilized multiple parking services simultaneously or while switching between them. Our study can contribute to the efficient analysis of malicious domain names using domain parking services.
