  • An Isolated Word Speech Recognition Using Fusion of Auditory and Visual Information

    We propose a speech recognition method using fusion of auditory and visual information for accurate speech recognition. Since we use both auditory information and visual information, we can perform speech recognition more accurately in comparison with the case of either auditory information or visual information. After processing each information by HMM, they are fused by linear combination with weight coefficient. We performed experiments and confirmed the validity of the proposed method.

    In this paper, a super-resolution method based on the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is proposed for a signal with some frequency damage. If the damage process can be modeled as linear convolutoin with a type 1 linear phase FIR filter, it is shown that some DCT coefficients of the damaged signal are the same as those of the original signal except for the DCT coefficients corresponding to the frequency damage. From this investigation, the proposed method is provided for the DCTs with four types as expanding the super-resolution method based on the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). In addition,two magnification approaches based on the proposed method are described to improve the conventional approach.

    A system based on application of Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM) to perform on-line fault diagnosis is presented. The diagnostic part of the system is composed of two diagnostic schemes. The first one (basic diagnostic algorithm) can be considered as a simple transition of Shiozaki's signed directed graph approach to FCM framework. The second one is an extended version of the basic diagnostic algorithm where an important concept, the temporal associative memories (TAM) recall of FCM, is adopted. In on-line application, self-generated fault FCM model generates predicted pattern sequence through the TAM recall process, which is compared with observed pattern sequence to declare the origin of fault. As the resultant diagnosis scheme takes short computation time, it can be used for on-line fault diagnosis of large and complex processes, and even for incipient fault diagnosis. In practical case, since real observed pattern sequence may be different from predicted one through the TAM recall owing to propagation delay between process variables, the time indexed fault FCM model incorporating delay time is proposed. The utility of the proposed system is illustrated in fault diagnosis of a tank-pipe system.

    This paper discusses how to derive message sequence charts (MSCs) from a set of state transition descriptions. Recently, MSC notation has received much attention in the communications software field because it graphically shows system global behavior, So MSC handling techniques are being widely studied. These studies have recommended the design a system by a set of formal MSCs in the early stages of development and then to convert them into state transition descriptions. However, it is difficult to apply those results to existing communications software products. This is because these systems are designed based on state transition descriptions and there are no formal MSCs for them. In this paper, we propose a method of deriving MSCs based on optimized reachability analysis. This method generates MCSs that avoid state explosion. A case study using Q.931 protocol shows the feasibility of this method.

    Storage system in a multimedia server must satisfy two contradicting requirements: real-timeliness and large number of parallel user requests. Efficient algorithms for data placement, disk head scheduling, and request admission control schemes are needed to support the requirements. In this paper, we propose efficient schemes to maximize system resource utilization and service availability: cyclic placement scheme, subgroup retrieval scheme, and measurement-based request admission control scheme. Performance analysis through simulation revealed that the amount of system buffers required can be reduced by 70% approximately.

  • Optimized Compensation Transaction for Mobile Telecommunication Systems

    In this paper, we design an optimized compensation transaction (OCT) that implies an important property of location information. The validity of the proposed compensation transaction is illustrated by describing the HLR database systems on the mobile telecommunications system. We found out that both the length and the occurrence percentage of compensation transactions affect reversely the success ratio of other transactions. However, OCT rarely affects the other transactions, because the compensating procedures are performed rapidly. This paper argues that the optimized compensation transaction is very adequate in the mobile telecommunication system where update transactions are issued more frequently than read-only transactions.

    This paper describes a new hierarchical bit line organization utilizing a T-shaped bit line(H-BLT) and its practical implementation in a 4-Mb SRAM using a 0.4µm CMOS process. The H-BLT has reduced the number of I/O circuits for multiplexers, sense amplifiers and write drivers, resulting in an efficient multiple blockdivision of the memory cell array. The size of the SRAM die was reduced by 14% without an access penalty. The active current is 30mA at 5 V and 10 MHz. The typical address access time is 35 ns with a 4.5 V supply voltage and a 30 pF load capacitance. The operating voltage range is 2.5 V to 6.0 V. H-BLT is a bright and useful architecture for the high density SRAMs of the future.

    Signal Transition Graphs (STG'S) [1] are Petrinets [2], which were introduced to represent a behavior of asynchronous circuits. To derive logic functions from an STG, the reachability graph should be constructed. In the verification of STG's some method based on Occurrence nets (OCN) and its prefix, called unfollding, has been proposed [3], [4]. OCN's can represent both causality and concurrency between two nodes by net stryctyre. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to derive a logic function by generating sub-state space of a given STG using the structural properties of OCN. The proposed algorithm can be seem as a parallel algorithm for deriving a logic function.

    Full-search block-matching motion estimation is a popular method to reduce temporal redundancies in video sequence. Due to its excessive computational load, parallel processing architectures are often required for real-time processing. One of the architectures is Hsieh's architecture based on systolic array processor and shift register arrays. Serial input characteristic of his scheme can reduce the number of pixel inputs to one, at the expense of significantly increasing the initialization time. This paper presents a modified and generalized Hsieh's architecture to reduce the initialization time. The proposed architecture can easily control data flows by rearranging shift register arrays and input-pin counts by using multiplexers on input stage, while retaining good properties of Hsieh's. The proposed architecture has the following advantages: (1) it allows controllable data inputs to save the pin counts, (2) it is flexible to the dimensional change of the search area via simple control, (3) it can operate in real time for video conference applications, and (4) it has simple and modular structure which is quite suitable for VLSI implementation. For verification of the proposed architecture, VHDL simulations are performed and some results are given.

    We present a systematic theory for the optimum sub-band interpolation using a given analysis or synthesis filter bank with the prescribed coefficient bit length. Recently, similar treatment is presented by Kida and quantization for decimated sample values is contained partly in this discussion [13]. However, in his previous treatment, measures of error are defined abstractly and no discussion for concrete functional forms of measures of error is provided. Further, in the previous discussion, quantization is neglected in the proof of the reciprocal theorem. In this paper, linear quantization for decimated sample values is included also and, under some conditions, we will present concrete functional forms of worst case measures of error or a pair of upper bound and lower limit of those measures of error in the variable domain. These measures of error are defined in Rn, although the measure of error in the literature [13] is more general but must be defined in each limited block separately. Based on a concrete expression of measure of error, we will present similar reciprocal theorem for a filter bank nevertheless the quantization for the decimated sample values is contained in the discussion. Examples are given for QMF banks and cosine-modulated FIR filter banks. It will be shown that favorable linear phase FIR filter banks are easily realized from cosine-modulated FIR filter banks by using reciprocal relation and new transformation called cosine-sine modulation in the design of filter banks.

  • Radar Reflectivity and Rainfall Rate Relation from Weibull Raindrop-Size Distribution

    We have compared the various raindrop-size distributions (DSD) with the recent experimental data collected by the distrometer. It is shown that the Weibull distribution is the best fit to the experimental data for drizzle, widespread and thunderstorm rain cases. By using this Weibull DSD, we obtained a new expression of the radar reflectivity factor (Z) and the rainfall rate (R) relation, that is Z=285R1.48, which gives few errors comparing to some measurements in TRMM frequency of 14GHZ.

    This paper describes methods in which natural language is used to describe video contents, knowledge of which is needed for intelligent video manipulation. The content encoded by natural language is extracted by a language analyzer in the form of subject-centered dependency structures which is a language-oriented structure, and is combined in an incremental way into a single structure called a multi-path index tree. Content descriptors and their inter-relations are extracted from the index tree in order to provide a high speed retrieval and flexibility. The content-based video index is represented in a two-dimensional structure where in the descriptors are mapped onto a component axis and temporal references (i.e., video segments aligned to the descriptors) are mapped onto a time axis. We implemented an experimental image retrieval systems to illustrate the proposed index structure 1) has superior retrieval capabilities compare to those used in conventional methods, 2) can be generated by an automated procedure, and 3) has a compact and flexible structure that is easily expandable, making an integration with vision processing possible.

  • Validation and Ground Truth for TRMM Precipitation Radar Using the MU Radar

    The MU radar of Japan is one of important candidates for providing accurate ground truth for the TRMM precipitation radar. It can provide the dropsize distribution data together with the background atmospheric wind data with high accuracy and high spatial resolution. Special observation scheme developed for TRMM validation using the MU radar is described, and preliminary results from its test experiment are shown. The high-resolution MU radar data are also used in numerical simulations to validate the rain retrieval algorithm for the TRMM PR data analysis. Among known sources of errors in the rain retrieval, the vertical variability of the dropsize distribution and the partial beam-filling effect are examined in terms of their significance with numerical simulations based on the MU radar data. It is shown that these factors may seriously affect the accuracy of the TRMM rain retrieval, and that it is necessary to establish statistical means for compensation. However, suggested means to improve the conventional α-adjustment method require careful treatment so that they do not introduce new sources of errors.

    We analyze dynamics of a simple hysteresis network (ab. SHN) which has only two parameters. We classify the periodic orbits and clarify the number of attractors and their domain of attraction. The SHN is a piecewise linear system, and therefore we can calculate the trajectory using exact solutions. We clarify the bifurcation sets on which equilibrium attractors bifurcate to the periodic orbits. We also give a sufficient condition for stability of the periodic orbits, and the stability is verified by laboratory experiment. The results of this paper may contribute to the development of an efficient multi functional artificial neural network.

    Three dimensional model based coding methods are proposed as next generation image coding methods. These new representations need 3D reconstruction techniques. This paper presents a method that extracts the surfaces of static objects that occlude other objects from a spatiotemporal image captured with straight-line camera motion. We propose the concept of occlusion types and show that the occlusion types are restricted to only eight patterns. Furthermore, we show occlusion type pairs contain information that confirms the existence of surfaces. Occlusion information gives strong cues for segmentation and representation. The method can estimate not only the 3D positions of edge points but also the surfaces bounded by the edge points. We show that combinations of occlusion types contain information that can confirm surface existence. The method was tested successfully on real images by reconstructing flat and curved surfaces. Videos can be hierarchically structured with the method. The method makes various applications possible, such as object selective image communication and object selective video editing.

    A multi-terminal serial optical link(MSOL) achieves very simple and cost effective radio cell configurations because only one pair of fibers is needed. In addition, low cost Fabry-Perot laser diodes(FP-LDs) can be employed. MSOL has a substantial problem in that the beat noise degrades the C/N in the up-link. To reduce this noise, we propose using an automatic wavelength-offset control(AWOC) circuit. The AWOC circuit offsets the LD wavelength by controlling the laser bias current to minimise the RF band beat noise which is inherent in MSOL systems, and enables high C/N optical-microwave transmission. An experimental MSOL consisting of 5 radio access stations, each equipped with AWOC, is constructed to estimate the noise free dynamic range for 800-MHz 20-carrier signal transmission. The up-link comprises a single mode fiber connecting five 1.3-µm FP-LDs operating at 0.2 mW. The down-link consists of a single mode fiber and one 1.3-µm Distributed Feedback type Laser Diode(DFB-LD) emitting at 4.0 mW. The experimental device achieves over 15 dB noise reduction compared to MSOL without AWOC in the temperature range of 0 to 40. By using the proposed AWOC, MSOL can achive low cost optical fiber RF microcell systems that are easy to install. Additionally, when we install MSOL in the radio base station, the links become more cost effective than coaxial cable links; they offer a wide dynamic range and higher transmission quality.

    Handwritten character recognition has been increasing its importance and has been expanding its application areas such as office automation, postal service automation, automatic data entry to computers, etc. It is challenging to develop a handwritten character recognition system with high processing speed, high performance, and high portability, because there is a trade-off among them. In current technology, it is difficult to attain high performance and high processing speed at the same time with single algorithms, and therefore, we need to find an efficient way of combination of multiple algorithms. We present an engineering solution to this problem. The system is based on multi-stage strategy as a whole: The first stage is a simple, fast, and reliable recognition algorithm with low substitution-error rate, and data of high quality are recognized in this stage, whereas sloppily written or degraded data are rejected and sent out to the second stage. The second stage is composed of a sophisticated structural pattern classifier and a pattern matching classifier, and these two complementary algorithms run in parallel (multiple expert approach). We demonstrate the performance of the completed system by experiments using real data.
