  • A Digitized Group Modulator Using Simple Fractional Sampling for Multi-Carrier TDMA Radio Systems

    This paper proposes a new digitized group modulator for radio base station transmitters of multi-carrier TDMA. This group modulator can flexibly set carrier spacing and features a simple construction as a result of employing the Simple Fractional Sampling technique. A group modulator LSI was designed and built using 0.5-µm BiCMOS technology, and a π/4-shifted QPSK group modulator was constructed using this LSI. Experiments confirm that the modulator simultaneously generates multiple carriers in a wide bandwidth without the need for precise adjustment and there is little difference between each of the carriers in terms of BER performance. Moreover, experiments confirm that the group modulator's burst-output (frequency hopping) performance is excellent.

    For similarity methods to work well, the image must be blurred before being input. However, the relationship between the blurring operation and the similarity is not fully understood. To solve the problem of this relationship, in this paper, the effect of blurring is investigated by expressing figure f(x) in the form of the sum of higher derivatives of f (x,σ), and then a simple similarity between figures was mathematically formulated in terms of the relation between visual patterns. By modifying this formulation, we propose pluralized simple similarity to increase the allowance in different view of multiple similarity. The similarity maintains higher allowance without any discernible loss of distinguishing power. We verify the effectiveness of the pluralized simple similarity throughout some experiments.

    This paper proposes a design technique for 3-D non-separable QMF banks with Face-Centered Cubic Sampling (FCCS) and Body-Centered Cubic Sampling (BCCS). In the proposed technique, 2-D McClellan transformation is applied to a suitably designed 2-D prototype QMF to obtain 3-D QMFs. The design examples given in this paper demonstrate advantages of the proposed method.

    This paper proposes a half-chip offset QPSK (Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) modulation CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) scheme to allow the simple differential detection while realizing a compact spectrum in nonlinear channels for wireless LAN systems. The experimental results show the proposed scheme achieves excellent Pe (probability of error) performances in ACI (adjacent channel interference) and CCI (co-channel interference) environments. Moreover, by employing time diversity and high-coding-gain FEC (Forward Error Correction), the half-chip offset QPSK-CDMA scheme realizes an improvement of 3.0 dB (in terms of Eb/No at a Pe of 105) in Rician fading environments with a Doppler frequency fD of 10 Hz and a delay spread of 40 nsec.

    The mean field theory has been recognized as offering an efficient computational framework in solving discrete optimization problems by neural networks. This paper gives a formulation based on the information geometry to the mean field theory, and makes clear from the information-theoretic point of view the meaning of the mean field theory as a method of approximating a given probability distribution. The geometrical interpretation of the phase transition observed in the mean field annealing is shown on the basis of this formulation. The discussion of the standard mean field theory is extended to introduce a more general computational framework, which we call the generalized mean field theory.

    An effect of source harmonic tuning on linearity of power GaAs FET's under class AB operation is demonstrated. To improve efficiency of the power amplifiers, GaAs FET's are often poerated under class AB condition. Due to lower bias current, a class AB amplifier begins to show nonlinearity at lower input power comparing with class A operation, and as the power level of the input signal increases, however, an output power sometimes increases abruptly. From nonlinear circuit simulation, we have found this phenomenon is occurred by the distortion in gate RF voltage, and by suppressing even-order harmonics in the input circuit of GaAs FET, class AB amplifiers can be effectively linearized. In this paper, we show the condition for improving the linearity of power CaAs FET's under class AB operation by the source harmonic tuning technique.

    A miniature transceiver, including highly integrated MMIC front-end, for 1.9 GHz band personal handy phone system(PHS) has been developed. The terminal, adopting direct conversion transmitter and receiver technology, consists of four high-density RF circuit modules and a digital signal processing LSI with 2.7 V power supply. The four functional modules are a power amplifier, a transmitter,a receiver, and a frequency synthesizer. Each functional module includes one IC chip and passive LCR components connected with solder bumps on module substrate. The experimental miniature PHS handset has been fabricated to verify the design concepts of the miniature transceiver. The total volume of the developed PHS terminal is 60cc, including the 12cc front-end which comprises the four RF functional circuit modules. The air interface connection with the PHS base station simulator has been confirmed.

    Among various characters invented by the human being ,Kanji (Chinese character) is outstanding in its diversity and complexity, in contrast to Roman alphanumerics. So machine recognition of handwritten characters requires particular technics. This paper concerns commercially available optical character readers (OCRs) and the recognition techniques using therein. Methods of character recognition is classified the pattern types and the method of extracting features, to discuss the present states of the character recognition. In regard to the structural analysis, the proposed techniques are classified and discussed in accordance with the extraction method of line segment and axial correlation. Finally, various techniques are compared with one another by using a common database, so as to understand the present states of character recognition and to discuss the technical trends.

    Devanagari is the most widely used script in India. Here, a method is introduced for recognizing Devanagari characters using Neural network. The proposed method reduces the number of output unit necessary for a conventional neural network where the classification is based on a winner take all basis. An automatic coding procedure for representing the output layer of the network and a different method for the final classification is also proposed. Along with the automatic coding procedure, a heuristic method for representing the output units by exploiting the structural information of Devanagari character is also demonstrated. Besides, it has been shown by random representation of the output layer that the representation effects the generalization/performance of the network. The proposed automatic representation gave the recognition rate of 98.09% for 44 categories.

    A multi-terminal serial optical link(MSOL) achieves very simple and cost effective radio cell configurations because only one pair of fibers is needed. In addition, low cost Fabry-Perot laser diodes(FP-LDs) can be employed. MSOL has a substantial problem in that the beat noise degrades the C/N in the up-link. To reduce this noise, we propose using an automatic wavelength-offset control(AWOC) circuit. The AWOC circuit offsets the LD wavelength by controlling the laser bias current to minimise the RF band beat noise which is inherent in MSOL systems, and enables high C/N optical-microwave transmission. An experimental MSOL consisting of 5 radio access stations, each equipped with AWOC, is constructed to estimate the noise free dynamic range for 800-MHz 20-carrier signal transmission. The up-link comprises a single mode fiber connecting five 1.3-µm FP-LDs operating at 0.2 mW. The down-link consists of a single mode fiber and one 1.3-µm Distributed Feedback type Laser Diode(DFB-LD) emitting at 4.0 mW. The experimental device achieves over 15 dB noise reduction compared to MSOL without AWOC in the temperature range of 0 to 40. By using the proposed AWOC, MSOL can achive low cost optical fiber RF microcell systems that are easy to install. Additionally, when we install MSOL in the radio base station, the links become more cost effective than coaxial cable links; they offer a wide dynamic range and higher transmission quality.

    Table-form document structure analysis is an important problem in the document processing domain. This paper presents a new method called Box-Driven Reasoning (BDR) to robustly analyze the structure of table-form documents that include touching characters and broken lines. Real documents are copied repeatedly and overlaid with printed data, resulting in characters that touch cells and lines that are broken. Most previous methods employ a line-oriented approach, but touching characters and broken lines make the procedure fail at an early stage. BDR deals with regions directly in contrast with other previous methods and a reduced resolution image is introduced to supplement information deteriorated by noise. Experimental tests show that BDR reliably recognizes cells and strings in document images with touching characters and broken lines.

    Rate-based congestion control is a promising scheme as data transfer service in ATM networks, and has been standardized in the ATM Forum. To migrate the existing upper layer protocols to ATM networks, however, further investigation is necessary. In particular, when ABR service class is applied to TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), duality of congestion control schemes in different protocol layers, i.e., conventional window-based congestion control in the Transport layer and ratebased congestion control in the ATM layer, may have a unexpected influence on performance. As an alternative approach for supporting TCP protocol, EPD (Early Packet Discard) has been recently proposed, which adds the function to the UBR (Unspecified Bit Rate) service. It does not have a "duality problem" since EPD only discards cells selectively to improve packet-level performance. In this paper, we exhibit performance of TCP protocol over ATM networks by using a simulation technique. We first compare rate-based control of ABR service and EPD applied to UBR service, and show that rate-control achieves better fairness and higher throughput in most circumstances. However, rate-based control requires careful tuning of control parameters to obtain its effectiveness and a duality problem leads to unexpected degradation of TCP-level performance. By the rate-based congestion control, temporal congestion at the switch is quickly relieved by the rate down of the source terminals. However, our simulation explores that if the parameter set of the rate-based congestion control is not appropriately used, the congestion is also recognized at TCP due to packet drops and TCP unnecessarily throttles its window size. To avoid this sort of the problem, we develop the appropriate parameter set suitable to TCP on ABR service, and point out that some modification of TCP may be necessary for further performance improvement.

  • Robust n-Gram Model of Japanese Character and Its Application to Document Recognition

    A new postprocessing method using interpolated n-gram model for Japanese documents is proposed. The method has the advantages over conventional approaches in enabling high-speed, knowledge-free processing. In parameter estimation of an n-gram model for a large size of vocabulary, it is difficult to obtain sufficient training samples. To overcome poverty of samples, two smoothing methods for Japanese character trigram model are evaluated, and the superiority of deleted interpolation method is shown by using perplexity. A document recognition system based on the trigram model is constructed, which finds maximum likelihood solutions through Viterbi algorithm. Experimental results for three kinds of documents show that the performance is high when using deleted interpolation method for smoothing. 90% of OCR errors are corrected for the documents similar to training text data, and 75% of errors are corrected for the documents not so similar to training text data.

  • Precise Selection of Candidates for Handwritten Character Recognition Using Feature Regions

    In this paper, a new algorithm for selection of candidates for handwritten character recognition is presented. Since we adopt the concept of the marginal radius to examine the confidence of candidates, the evaluation function is required to describe the pattern distribution correctly. For this reason, we propose Simplified Mahalanobis distance and observe its behavior by simulation. In the proposed algorithm, first, for each character, two types of feature regions (multi-dimensional one and one-dimensional one) are estimated from training samples statistically. Then, by referring to the feature regions, candidates are selected and verified. Using two types of feature regions is a principal characteristic of our method. If parameters are estimated accurately, the multi-dimensional feature region is extremely effective for character recognition. But generally, estimation errors in parameters occur, especially with a small number of sample patterns. Although the recognition ability of one-dimensional feature region is not so high, it can express the distribution comparatively precisely in one-dimensional space. By combining these feature regions, they will work concurrently to overcome the defects of each other. The effectiveness of the method is shown with the results of experiments.

    This paper describes the design of a high-speed 4-2 compressor for fast multipliers. Through the survey of the six kinds of representative conventional 4-2 compressor (RBA 1-3 and NBA 1-3) in both the redundant binary (RB) and the normal binary (NB) scheme, we extracted two problems that degrades the operating speed. The first is the use of multi-input complex gates and the second is the existence of transmission gates (TG) at the input and/or output stages. To solve these problems, we propose high-speed 4-2 compressors using the RB scheme, which we call the high-speed redundant binary adders (HSRBAs). Six kinds of HSRBAs, HSRBA 1-6, were derived by making the Boolean equations suitable for high-speed CMOS circuits. Among them, HSRBA2, HSRBA4 and HSRBA6 have no multi-input complex gate and input/output TG, and perform at a delay time of 0.89 ns which is the fastest of all 4-2 compressors. We investigated the logical relation between HSRBAs and conventional 4-2 compressors by analyzing the Boolean equations for each circuit. This investigation shows that all the conventional redundant binary adders RBA1-3 have the same logic structures as HSRBA2. We also showed the conventional normal binary adders NBA1-3 have the same logic structures as HSRBA1, HSRBA3 and HSRBA5, respectively. This implies all 4-2 compressors can be derived from the same equation regardless of RB or NB. We applied the HSRBA2 to a 5454-bit multiplier using 0.5-µm CMOS technology. The multiplication time at the supply voltage of 3.3 V was 8.8 ns. This is the fastest 5454-bit multiplier with 0.5-µm CMOS so far, and 83% of the speed improvement is due to the high speed 4-2 compressor.

    We present a 64-b adder having a 2.6-ns delay time at 3.3 V power supply within 0.27 mm2 using 0.5-µm CMOS technology. We derived our adder design from architectural level considerations. The considerations include not only the gate intrinsic delay but also the wiring delay and the gate capacitance delay. As a result, a 64-b adder, (56-b Carry Look-ahead Adder(CLA) +8-b Carry Select Adder (CSA)), was designed. In this design, a new carry select scheme called Modified Carry Select (MCS) is also proposed.

    An ordered binary decision diagram (OBDD) is a directed acyclic graph for representing a Boolean function. OBDDs are widely used in various areas which require Boolean function manipulation, since they can represent efficiently many practical Boolean functions and have other desirable properties. However, there is very little theoretical research on the complexity of constructing an OBDD. In this paper, we prove that the optimal variable ordering problem of a shared BDD is NP-complete, and briefly discuss the approximation hardness of this problem and related OBDD problems.

  • Induced Noise from Arc Discharge and Its Simulation

    Induced noises from breaking contact arc discharge and sliding contact discharge of dc motor are measured by pick up coil and current probe. Statistical properties, amplitude distribution probability (APD), of induced noise waveform are analyzed by simple method using intermediate frequency of spectrum analyzer. It is shown that APD characteristics can be used to estimate statistical characteristics and peak value of induced noise. Simulation model of the noise made by the combination of Gaussian noise is mentioned. The model called the composite noise generator (CNG) can be good fit to the real characteristics of both noises from breaking arc and dc motor. Applications of the CNG for noise filter using toroidal coil shows that the CNG is useful to realize the test of noise suppression characteristics. What parameters of the CNG should be considered is described for further applications.

    We have developed inlaid copper interconnects employing amorphous Ti-Si-N barrier metal. The interconnect resistivity is 1.90.1 µΩcm. Ti-Si-N films were shown to be amorphous by X-ray diffraction measurements. The amorphous structure was thermal stable, even after annealing at 600 for 30 minutes in an Ar ambient. The atomic composition of the film was identified as Ti : Si : N=1 : 0.6 : 1.6. The films were found to be under tensile stress of 0.3 Gpa. The resistivity is about 0.5 mΩcm at room temperature. The diffusion barrier characteristics were evaluated by n+/p and p+/n junction leakage measurements. No degradation of leakage characteristics was observed for these diodes, even after annealing at 600 for 30 minutes in an N2/H2 ambient. The amorphous Ti-Si-N barrier metal is a promising candidate for application in deep-submicron high-speed ULSIs.

  • On End System Behavior for Explicit Forward Congestion Indication of ABR Service and Its Performance

    This paper investigates Available Bit Rate (ABR) traffic control based on the Explicit Forward Congestion Indication (EFCI). A flow control mechanism is specified for ABR service to control the source rate. Resource Management (RM) cells are used to convey feedback. A source sends a forward RM cell for at least every N cells sent. At the destination, a forward RM cell turns around as a backward RM cell and returns to the source. A data cell has EFCI-bit in its header field. A network element sets EFCI-bit if it is congested. A destination indicates congestion status of networks by using RM cells based on the value of the EFCI-bit of the data cells. A one-bit feedback scheme is used by the ATM Forum. However, indication schemes have also been proposed which use explicit indication of source rate based both on values of the EFCI-bit of data cells and on other information contained in a forward RM cell. We evaluated explicit indication schemes as well as a one-bit scheme by simulation. Simulation study showed explicit cell rate indication gives superior performance than one-bit indication especially for long round trip distances. In this paper, we report the results with brief discussion.
