The rapid growth of state space in a two-dimensional (2D) random walk model imposes heavy computational load on mobility analysis of personal communication services (PCS) networks. This letter presents a novel random walk model with a compact state space by exploiting the symmetry of cellular patterns in a K-layer cluster of cells. The size of the state space is reduced to (K+1)/2(K/2+1)+1, with an asymptotic compression ratio of 12.

The mesoporous materials from the self-assembled organic-inorganic compound materials have great possibilities for a variety of applications. However, to make use of these kinds of materials effectively, they must be controlled. In this paper, we are succeeded in powder state pore size control and in significantly fabrication film state for device application use.

Carbon-gold (C-Au) film was formed by co-operation process of plasma CVD and sputtering with using methane and Ar mixture gas and gold plate discharge electrode. Refractive index of 3.1 for the film was obtained at Au atom content of 5.5 atomic%. The optical transmittance was improved significantly in the visible light wavelength range compared to the C-S-Au film reported previously. Au atom distribution in the C-Au film and the electronic polarizabilities were discussed in the relation to the refractive index.

We investigated the electrical properties of hole transport materials such as TPD, α-NPD and m-MTDATA using in-situ field effect measurement. TPD, α-NPD and m-MTDATA films showed p-type semiconducting properties, and their electrical parameters such as conductivity, carrier mobility and carrier concentration were obtained. We also examined the effect of the substrate temperature during vacuum deposition and the thermal treatment after deposition, on the electrical parameters of the films. Experimental results showed that conductivity and carrier mobility decreased as the substrate temperature increased over the glass transition temperature. These decreases in conductivity and carrier mobility as a result of thermal treatment appear to be strongly related to the degradation mechanism of organic electroluminescent devices.

A DC-DC converter using two transformers is proposed. One transformer delivers the energy to a load when a switch is on and the other transfers the flyback energy to a load when a switch is off. The primary windings of the two transformers function as choke inductance alternately, and thus the output voltage control by means of the duty ratio and the zero-voltage-switching are possible without an additional inductor. The breadboarded prototypes of the single output and the two outputs have confirmed the principles of operation and demonstrated the high conversion efficiency.

The surface potential built across vacuum deposited phthalocyanine (Pc) films on aluminum electrode was investigated by means of electro-modulation spectroscopy. The sandwich-type cells with thin air gap, which becomes a good insulator were used in order to avoid the influence of charge injection. The existence of the surface potential at the metal/organic-material interface induced 1f referenced electro-reflectance (ER) signals. As a result, the surface potential built across vacuum deposited Pc films on aluminum electrode was estimated to be 1.25 V.
This paper presents the full wave analysis of a microwave amplifier by the extended finite difference time domain method. The device-wave interaction is characterized and incorporated into the FDTD time-marching scheme. The equivalent current source is used to model the amplifier and all the electric field components at the active sheet are updated by FDTD. Central-difference approximation is used to discretize a set of state equations. The results obtained by the present method show good agreement with those of the frequency domain circuit analysis and serenade v8.5.

We have developed a 22 digital optical switch (DOS) composed of four 12 DOS elements and a thermo-optic wavelength tunable filter using silicone resin waveguides. The 22 DOS operated with a switching power of 380 mW, a very low crosstalk of less than -60 dB, and a low insertion loss of less than 2.5 dB at 1.55 µm. We have also developed two types of polymer thermo-optic wavelength tunable filter with a pair of triangular phase shifters. One filter is designed for a large-scale WDM system (32 channels, 0.8 nm spacing) and the other for a small-scale WDM system (10 channels, 0.8 nm spacing). We optimized the arrayed waveguide number, reducing the operating power required by these filters. Moreover, they both operated with a low crosstalk of < -25 dB.

We have developed the new energy storage system utilizing a radical redox reaction of poly (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinoxy methacrylate), PTMA. The coin-type cell with PTMA cathode demonstrates the charge capacity of is 72 Ah/kg, which corresponds to 65% of the theoretical capacity, and the coulombic efficiency was 90% in first charge-discharge cycle. The results indicate that the stable polyradical cathodes are promising materials due to their high charge utilization and the possibilities for the wide diversity of molecular design.

The adsorption behavior of cytochrome c was investigated using slab optical waveguide (SOWG) absorption spectroscopy at the near ultraviolet region utilizing thin quartz plates as planar waveguides. SOWG absorption spectra of cytochrome c measured at constant time intervals showed significant influence of surface hydrophilicity and solution chemistry on the adsorption of this important heme protein in quartz surface. Being polar and typically amphoteric, the protein preferred adsorption on hydrophilic surface than on hydrophobic surface as implied by the lower absorbance data obtained in the latter than in the former. At lower ionic strength and in the absence of buffer, the protein molecules tend to adsorb on the quartz surface. Plots of near steady-state absorbance versus protein concentration follow hyperbolic pattern in the absence of buffer or at low ionic strength and become more linear as the buffer concentration is increased. The results presented here are explained in terms of the general qualitative understanding of protein adsorption at solid-aqueous interfaces and further aids in elucidating the properties of protein monolayers and films.

Self-ordered mesoporous silicate films from organic-inorganic compound materials are successfully fabricated into the surface photo voltage (SPV) type gas sensor device as a gas adsorption insulator layer. These kinds of gas sensors device exhibit NO gas sensing property dependent on their mesoporous film structure. We are succeeded in indication about a possibility of mesoporous silicate film for the SPV type gas sensor application.

This paper introduces the concept of hierarchical testability of data paths for delay faults. A definition of hierarchically two-pattern testable (HTPT) data path is developed. Also, a design for testability (DFT) method is presented to augment a data path to become an HTPT one. The DFT method incorporates a graph-based analysis of an HTPT data path and makes use of some graph algorithms. The proposed method can provide similar advantages to the enhanced scan approach at a much lower hardware overhead cost.

This paper presents a child verb learning model mainly based on syntactic bootstrapping. The model automatically learns 4-5-year-old children's linguistic knowledge of verbs, including subcategorization frames and thematic roles, using a text in dialogue format. Subcategorization frame acquisition of verbs is guided by the assumption of the existence of nine verb prototypes. These verb prototypes are extracted based on syntactic bootstrapping and some psycholinguistic studies. Thematic roles are assigned by syntactic bootstrapping and other psycholinguistic hypotheses. The experiments are performed on the data from the CHILDES database. The results show that the learning model successfully acquires linguistic knowledge of verbs and also suggest that psycholinguistic studies of child verb learning may provide important hints for linguistic knowledge acquisition in natural language processing (NLP).

The IETF Mobile IP defines two multicast options: remote subscription (RS) and bi-direction tunneling (BT). In order to synthesize the strong points of these two IETF multicast options, we propose a hybrid approach, mMOM, which selectively uses two IETF multicast options based on the mobility of mobile hosts. Whenever a mobile host requests its first registration to a certain foreign agent, the corresponding foreign agent starts the service using the BT option. Afterwards, if it requests re-registration to the same foreign agent, the foreign agent considers it to be relatively immobile and continues services using the RS option. We propose a new metric to compare heterogeneous algorithms. Simulation results show that our approach outperforms all others.

In this paper, the efficient signal enhancement scheme for an adaptive antenna array under the Nakagami fading channel is proposed. The proposed signal enhancement scheme is the modified linear signal estimator with Toeplitz Matrix Approximation (TMA) method. The underlying principle of the proposed signal enhancement scheme is to reduce a noise component using not only the Lagrangian method of the constrained minimization but also a signal-plus-noise subspace method. TMA is also used to have the theoretical property of noise-free signal. These functions greatly enhance the performance of an adaptive antenna array by removing the all undesired noise effects from the post-correlation received signal. The proposed signal enhancement scheme is applied at the Wiener Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) method which has been widely used as the conventional adaptive antenna array. Also, we investigated the effect of the power control error (PCE) for the proposed scheme over the Nakagami multipath fading channel. Several computer simulation examples are provided for illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
In an Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network domain, Asynchronous Transfer Mode--Label Switch Routers (ATM-LSRs) are considered the best candidate for providing the highest forwarding capability. ATM-LSRs implement a VC-merging scheme that allows many IP routes to be mapped into the same VPI/VCI label, hence supporting scalability. The VC-merging requires reassembly buffers to reconstruct an original packet from its segmented but interleaved AAL-5 cells. In this paper, we analyze the performance of an ATM-LSR with partial VC-merging capability and investigate the impact of VC-merging on the requirement of the reassembly and output buffer. The numerical computation complexity of the mathematical analysis can be reduced from O(M4) to O(M2), where M is the total number of ON-OFF sources. We also propose a closed-form equation, which approximates the distribution of the output buffer with satisfactory accuracy. Numerical results show that when incoming cells are severely interleaved, the VC-merging needs the reassembly buffer size to be of the same order as the output buffer size, which cannot be ignored.

We propose a new receiver structure to mitigate interpath interference (IPI) in W-CDMA systems. We model IPI in RAKE combining as intersymbol interference (ISI) and use a two-stage receiver structure. The first stage is a RAKE receiver and the second stage is an equalizer. In cases of multi-code transmission, interference among code channels causes extra impairments which can not be modelled as ISI. Under these circumstances, they are estimated by using decisions from the first stage and then subtracted from the input of the equalizer. The residual interference is equivalent to ISI and can be mitigated by the equalizer. Simulation results show that the proposed receiver provides very promising performance in low spreading factor W-CDMA.

The concept of the equi-phase curve is introduced for the cross-polarized channel case. It is proved that the equi-phase curves are a series of half circles on the Poincare sphere, and that all these curves have two common ends. Based on the introduced concept, this letter demonstrates the distribution of the received voltage's phases on the Poincare sphere. In addition, it is shown theoretically that the cross-polarized phase of the off-diagonal elements of a scattering matrix is unstable for most natural targets. Therefore, the cross-polarized phase information cannot be used for extracting target characteristics in polarimetric radar remote sensing.

In optical networks, wavelength converters are required to improve the efficiency of wavelength-division multiplexing. In this paper, we propose a genetic algorithm to determine the optimal locations of the nodes in the network where a given number of converters are placed. Optimality is achieved by the minimum wavelength blocking probability. Our algorithm is applied to two realistic networks constructed from the locations of major cities in Ibaraki Prefecture and from those in Kanto District in Japan and is shown to reach the nearly optimal solution in a limited number of generations. The accuracy is verified by simulation. The computational time is compared with that of an exhaustive search algorithm.
Wyner and Ziv considered the rate-distortion function for source coding with side information at the decoder (we call the Wyner-Ziv problem). In this paper we show an information-spectrum approach to the Wyner-Ziv problem for general class of nonstationary and/or nonergodic sources with side information at the decoder, where the distortion measure is arbitrary and may be nonadditive. We show that a general formula for the rate-distortion function of the Wyner-Ziv problem for general sources with the maximum distortion criterion under fixed-length coding by using the information spectrum approach.
