A long-reach coexisting PON system (1G/10G-EPON, video, and TWDM-PON) that uses the Wavelength Selective-Asymmetrical optical SPlitter (WS-ASP) without any active devices like optical amplifiers is proposed. The proposal can take into account the subscriber distribution in an access network and provide specific services in specific areas by varying the splitting ratios and the branch structure in the optical splitter. Simulations confirm the key features of WS-ASP, its novel process for deriving the splitting-ratios and greater transmission distance than possible with symmetrical splitters. Experiments on a prototype system demonstrate how wavelengths can be assigned to specific areas and optical link budget enhancement. For 1G-EPON systems, the prototype system with splitting-ratio of 60% attains the optical link budget enhancement of 4.2dB compared with conventional symmetrical optical splitters. The same prototype offers the optical link budget enhancement of 4.0dB at the bit rate of 10G-EPON systems. The values measured in the experiment agree well with the simulation results with respect to the transmission distance.

For actual multi-channel differential signaling system, the ideal balance or symmetrical topology cannot be established, and hence, an imbalance component is excited. However a theoretical analysis method of evaluating the voltage and current distribution on the differential-paired lines, which allows to anticipate EM radiation at the design stage and to study possible means for suppressing imbalance components, has not been implemented. To provide the basic considerations for electromagnetic (EM) radiation from practical asymmetrical differential-paired lines structure with equi-length routing used in high-speed board design, this paper newly proposes an analytical method for evaluating the voltage and current at any point on differential-paired lines by expressing the differential paired-lines with an equivalent source circuit and an equivalent load circuit. The proposed method can predict S-parameters, distributions of voltage and current and EM radiation with sufficient accuracy. In addition, the proposed method provides enough flexibility for different geometric parameters and can be used to develop physical insights and design guidelines. This study has successfully established a basic method to effectively predict signal integrity and EM interference issues on a differential-paired lines.

In this paper, we analyzed the pulse responses of dispersion medium with periodically conducting strips by using a fast inversion Laplace transform (FILT) method combined with point matching method (PMM) for both the TM and TE cases. Specifically, we investigated the influence of the width and number of the conducting strips on the pulse response and distribution of the electric field.
Recently, intelligent heating, next generation microwave ovens that achieve uniform heating and spot heating using solid-state devices, has been actively studied. There are two types of microwave generators using solid-state devices. Since compactness is indispensable to accommodate in a limited space, the miniaturized oscillator type was selected. The authors proposed an imbalanced coupling resonator, a resonator-less feedback circuit, a high power frequency variable resonator, and injection-locked phase control in order to achieve high performance of the oscillator type microwave generator. In addition, we confirmed that the oscillator type can be used as the microwave generator for intelligent heating using a Wilkinson combiner. As a result, it was demonstrated that the oscillator type microwave generator, realized the same high efficiency (67%) as the amplifier type, and found the possibility of variable frequency (2.4 to 2.5GHz) and variable phase, and can be used as the microwave generator for intelligent heating.
In this paper, we propose a notion for high-dimensional generalizations of mutually orthogonal Latin squares (MOLS) and mutually orthogonal diagonal Latin squares (MODLS), called mutually dimensionally orthogonal d-cubes (MOC) and mutually dimensionally orthogonal diagonal d-cubes (MODC). Systematic constructions for MOC and MODC by using polynomials over finite fields are investigated. In particular, for 3-dimensional cubes, the results for the maximum possible number of MODC are improved by adopting the proposed construction.

Recently, we demonstrated a rapid-single-flux-quantum NOT gate comprising a toggle storage loop. In this paper, we present our design and operation of a NOR gate that is a straightforward extension of the NOT gate by attaching a confluence buffer. Parameter margins wider than ±28% were confirmed in simulation. Functional tests using Nb integrated circuits demonstrated correct NOR operation with a bias margin of ±21%.

A ring-resonator type of electrode (RRTE) has been proposed to detect the circulating tumor cell (CTC) for evaluation of the current cancer progression and malignancy in clinical applications. Main emphasis is placed on the identification sensitivity for the lossy materials that can be found in biomedical fields. At first, the possibility of the CTC detection was numerically considered to calculate the resonant frequency of the RRTE catching the CTC, and it was evident that the RRTE with the cell has the resonant frequency inherent in the cell featured by its complex permittivity. To confirm the numerical consideration, the BaTiO3 particle, whose size was similar to that of the CTC, was inserted in the RRTE instead of the CTC as a preliminary experiment. Next, the resonant frequencies of the RRTE with internal organs of the beef cattle such as liver, lung, and kidney were measured for evaluation of the lossy materials such as the CTC, and degraded Q curves were observed because the Q-factors inherent in the internal organs were usually low due to the poor loss tangents. To overcome such difficulty, the RRTE, the oscillator circuit consisting of the FET being added, was proposed to improve the identification sensitivity. Comparing the identification sensitivity of the conventional RRTE, it has been improved because the oscillation frequency spectrum inherent in an internal organ could be easily observed thanks to the oscillation condition with negative resistance. Thus, the validity of the proposed technique has been confirmed.

In this study, the transient characteristics on the super-steep subthreshold slope (SS) of a PN-body tied (PNBT) silicon-on-insulator field-effect transistor (SOI-FET) were investigated using technology computer-aided design and pulse measurements. Carrier charging effects were observed on the super-steep SS PNBT SOI-FET. It was found that the turn-on delay time decreased to nearly zero when the gate overdrive-voltage was set to 0.1-0.15 V. Additionally, optimizing the gate width improved the turn-on delay. This has positive implications for the low speed problems of this device. However, long-term leakage current flows on turn-off. The carrier lifetime affects the leakage current, and the device parameters must be optimized to realize both a high on/off ratio and high-speed operation.
4K/8K satellite broadcasting featuring ultra-high definition video and sound was launched in Japan in 2018. This is the first 8K ultra high definition television (UHDTV) broadcasting in the world, with 16 times as many pixels as HDTV and 3D sound with 22.2ch audio. The large amount of information that has to be transmitted means that a new satellite broadcasting transmission system had to be developed. In this paper, we describe this transmission system, focusing on the technology that enables 4K/8K UHDTV satellite broadcasting.

This paper discusses and elaborates an analytical model of a multi-stage switched-capacitor (SC) voltage boost converter (VBC) for low-voltage and low-power energy harvesting systems, because the output impedance of the VBC, which is derived from the analytical model, plays an important role in the VBC's performance. In our proposed method, we focus on currents flowing into input and output terminals of each stage and model the VBCs using switching frequency f, charge transfer capacitance CF, load capacitance CL, and process dependent parasitic capacitance's parameter k. A comparison between simulated and calculated results showed that our model can estimate the output impedance of the VBC accurately. Our model is useful for comparing the relative merits of different types of multi-stage SC VBCs. Moreover, we demonstrate the performance of a prototype SC VBC and energy harvesting system using the SC VBC to show the effectiveness and feasibility of our proposed design guideline.

In this paper, we present non-Markovian availability models for capturing the dynamics of system behavior of an operational software system that undergoes aperiodic time-based software rejuvenation and checkpointing. Two availability models with rejuvenation are considered taking account of the procedure after the completion of rollback recovery operation. We further proceed to investigate whether there exists the optimal rejuvenation schedule that maximizes the steady-state system availability, which is derived by means of the phase expansion technique, since the resulting models are not the trivial stochastic models such as semi-Markov process and Markov regenerative process, so that it is hard to solve them by using the common approaches like Laplace-Stieltjes transform and embedded Markov chain techniques. The numerical experiments are conducted to determine the optimal rejuvenation trigger timing maximizing the steady-state system availability for each availability model, and to compare both two models.

After the work of Impagliazzo and Rudich (STOC, 1989), the black box framework has become one of the main research domain of cryptography. However black box techniques say nothing about non-black box techniques such as making use of zero-knowledge proofs. Brakerski et al. introduced a new black box framework named augmented black box framework, in which they gave a zero-knowledge proof oracle in addition to a base primitive oracle (TCC, 2011). They showed a construction of a non-interactive zero knowledge proof system based on a witness indistinguishable proof system oracle. They presented augmented black box construction of chosen ciphertext secure public key encryption scheme based on chosen plaintext secure public key encryption scheme and augmented black box separation between one-way function and key agreement. In this paper we simplify the work of Brakerski et al. by introducing a proof system oracle without witness indistinguishability, named coin-free proof system oracle, that aims to give the same construction and separation results of previous work. As a result, the augmented black box framework becomes easier to handle. Since our oracle is not witness indistinguishable, our result encompasses the result of previous work.
Radio frequency energy transfer (RET) technology has been introduced as a promising energy harvesting (EH) method to supply power in both wireless communication (WLC) and power-line communication (PLC) systems. However, current RET modified MAC (medium access control) protocols have been proposed only for WLC systems. Due to the difference in the MAC standard between WLC and PLC systems, these protocols are not suitable for PLC systems. Therefore, how to utilize RET technology to modify the MAC protocol of PLC systems (i.e., IEEE 1901), which can use the radio frequency signal to provide the transmission power and the PLC medium to finish the data transmission, i.e., realizing the ‘cooperative communication’ remains a challenge. To resolve this problem, we propose a RET modified MAC protocol for PLC systems (RET-PLC MAC). Firstly, we improve the standard PLC frame sequence by adding consultation and confirmation frames, so that the station can obtain suitable harvested energy, once it occupied the PLC medium, and the PLC system can be operated in an on-demand and self-sustainable manner. On this basis, we present the working principle of RET-PLC MAC. Then, we establish an analytical model to allow mathematical verification of RET-PLC MAC. A 2-dimension discrete Markov chain model is employed to derive the numerical analysis results of RET-PLC MAC. The impacts of buffer size, traffic rate, deferral counter process of 1901, heterogeneous environment and quality of information (QoI) are comprehensively considered in the modeling process. Moreover, we deduce the optimal results of system throughput and expected QoI. Through extensive simulations, we show the performance of RET-PLC MAC under different system parameters, and verify the corresponding analytical model. Our work provides insights into realizing cooperative communication at PLC's MAC layer.

Recently, GaN devices are often adopted in microwave power amplifiers to improve the performances. And many new design methods of microwave power amplifier were proposed. As a result, a high-efficiency and super compact microwave signal source has become easily available. It opens up the way for new microwave heating systems. In this paper, the recent progress on design methods of microwave power amplifier and the applications for microwave heating are described. In the first, a device model of GaN transistor is explained. An equivalent thermal model is introduced into the electrical non-linear equivalent device model. In the second, an active load-pull (ALP) measurement system to design a high-efficiency power amplifier is explained. The principle of the conventional closed-loop ALP system is explained. To avoid the risk of oscillation for the closed-loop ALP system, novel ALP systems are proposed. In the third, a microwave heating system is explained. The heating system monitors the reflection wave. Then, the frequency of the signal source and the phase difference between antennas are controlled to minimize the reflection wave. Absorption efficiency of more than 90% was obtained by the control of frequency and phase. In the last part, applications for a medical instrument is described.

This paper introduces a user study regarding the effects of hand- and ocular-dominances to pointing gestures. The result of this study is applicable for designing new gesture interfaces which are close to a user's cognition, intuitive, and easy to use. The user study investigates the relationship between the participant's dominances and pointing gestures. Four participant groups—right-handed right-eye dominant, right-handed left-eye dominant, left-handed right-eye dominant and left-handed left-eye dominant—were prepared, and participants were asked to point at the targets on a screen by their left and right hands. The pointing errors among the different participant groups are calculated and compared. The result of this user study shows that using dominant eyes produces better results than using non-dominant eyes and the accuracy increases when the targets are located at the same side of dominant eye. Based on these interesting properties, a method to find the dominant eye for pointing gestures is proposed. This method can find the dominant eye of an individual with more than 90% accuracy.

Modern deep learning has significantly improved performance and has been used in a wide variety of applications. Since the amount of computation required for the inference process of the neural network is large, it is processed not by the data acquisition location like a surveillance camera but by the server with abundant computing power installed in the data center. Edge computing is getting considerable attention to solve this problem. However, edge computing can provide limited computation resources. Therefore, we assumed a divided/distributed neural network model using both the edge device and the server. By processing part of the convolution layer on edge, the amount of communication becomes smaller than that of the sensor data. In this paper, we have evaluated AlexNet and the other eight models on the distributed environment and estimated FPS values with Wi-Fi, 3G, and 5G communication. To reduce communication costs, we also introduced the compression process before communication. This compression may degrade the object recognition accuracy. As necessary conditions, we set FPS to 30 or faster and object recognition accuracy to 69.7% or higher. This value is determined based on that of an approximation model that binarizes the activation of Neural Network. We constructed performance and energy models to find the optimal configuration that consumes minimum energy while satisfying the necessary conditions. Through the comprehensive evaluation, we found that the optimal configurations of all nine models. For small models, such as AlexNet, processing entire models in the edge was the best. On the other hand, for huge models, such as VGG16, processing entire models in the server was the best. For medium-size models, the distributed models were good candidates. We confirmed that our model found the most energy efficient configuration while satisfying FPS and accuracy requirements, and the distributed models successfully reduced the energy consumption up to 48.6%, and 6.6% on average. We also found that HEVC compression is important before transferring the input data or the feature data between the distributed inference processes.

This paper proposes a technique that increases the lifetime of large scale integration (LSI) devices. As semiconductor technology improves at miniaturizing transistors, aging effects due to bias temperature instability (BTI) seriously affects their lifetime. BTI increases the threshold voltage of transistors thereby also increasing the delay of an electronics device, resulting in failures due to timing violations. To compensate for aging-induced timing violations, we exploit configurable approximate computing. Assuming that target circuits have exact and approximate modes, they are configured for the approximate mode if an aging sensor predicts violations. Experiments using an example circuit revealed an increase in its lifetime to >10 years.

Approximate multiplier design is an effective technique to improve hardware performance at the cost of accuracy loss. The current approximate multipliers are mostly ASIC-based and are dedicated for one particular application. In contrast, FPGA has been an attractive choice for many applications because of its high performance, reconfigurability, and fast development round. This paper presents a novel methodology for designing approximate multipliers by employing the FPGA-based fabrics (primarily look-up tables and carry chains). The area and latency are significantly reduced by applying approximation on carry results and cutting the carry propagation path in the multiplier. Moreover, we explore higher-order multipliers on architectural space by using our proposed small-size approximate multipliers as elementary modules. For different accuracy-hardware requirements, eight configurations for approximate 8×8 multiplier are discussed. In terms of mean relative error distance (MRED), the error of the proposed 8×8 multiplier is as low as 1.06%. Compared with the exact multiplier, our proposed design can reduce area by 43.66% and power by 24.24%. The critical path latency reduction is up to 29.50%. The proposed multiplier design has a better accuracy-hardware tradeoff than other designs with comparable accuracy. Moreover, image sharpening processing is used to assess the efficiency of approximate multipliers on application.
Plane wave scattering from a circular conducting cylinder and a circular conducting strip has been formulated by equivalent surface currents which are postulated from the scattering geometrical optics (GO) field. Thus derived radiation far fields are found to be the same as those formulated by a conventional physical optics (PO) approximation for both E and H polarizations.

In this paper, we propose a filter-and-forward relay scheme with energy harvesting for single-carrier transmission in frequency-selective channels. The relay node harvests energy from both the source node transmit signal and its own transmit signal by self-energy recycling. The signal received by the relay node is filtered to suppress the inter-symbol interference and then forwarded to the destination node using the harvested energy. We consider a filter design method based on the signal-to-interference-plus-noise power ratio maximization, subject to a constraint that limits the relay transmit power. In addition, we provide a golden-section search based algorithm to optimize the power splitting ratio of the power splitting protocol. The simulation results show that filtering and self-energy recycling of the proposed scheme are effective in improving performance. It is also shown that the proposed scheme is useful even when only partial channel state information is available.
