This letter presents an effective direction of arrival (DOA) estimator that is based on the orthogonal projection (OP) technique. When an OP matrix is attained, the proposed estimator, which dispenses with spatial smoothing (SS) preprocessing, can form the maximizing orthogonality for a single snapshot. Since this technique does not need to perform eigen-decomposition while maintaining better DOA estimates, it also has real-time DOA estimation capability. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the efficiency of this method.

This paper presents a method for learning an overcomplete, nonnegative dictionary and for obtaining the corresponding coefficients so that a group of nonnegative signals can be sparsely represented by them. This is accomplished by posing the learning as a problem of nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) with maximization of the incoherence of the dictionary and of the sparsity of coefficients. By incorporating a dictionary-incoherence penalty and a sparsity penalty in the NMF formulation and then adopting a hierarchically alternating optimization strategy, we show that the problem can be cast as two sequential optimal problems of quadratic functions. Each optimal problem can be solved explicitly so that the whole problem can be efficiently solved, which leads to the proposed algorithm, i.e., sparse hierarchical alternating least squares (SHALS). The SHALS algorithm is structured by iteratively solving the two optimal problems, corresponding to the learning process of the dictionary and to the estimating process of the coefficients for reconstructing the signals. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the new algorithm performs better than the nonnegative K-SVD (NN-KSVD) algorithm and several other famous algorithms, and its computational cost is remarkably lower than the compared algorithms.

Smart OSPF (S-OSPF), a load balancing, shortest-path-based routing scheme, was introduced to improve the routing performances of networks running on OSPF assuming that exact traffic demands are known. S-OSPF distributes traffic from a source node to neighbor nodes, and after reaching the neighbor nodes, traffic is routed according to the OSPF protocol. However, in practice, exact traffic demands are difficult to obtain, and the distribution of unequal traffic to multiple neighbor nodes requires complex functionalities at the source. This paper investigates non-split S-OSPF with the hose model, in which only the total amount of traffic that each node injects into the network and the total amount of traffic each node receives from the network are known, for the first time, with the goal of minimizing the network congestion ratio (maximum link utilization over all links). In non-split S-OSPF, traffic from a source node to a destination node is not split over multiple routes, in other words, it goes via only one neighbor node to the destination node. The routing decision with the hose model is formulated as an integer linear programming (ILP) problem. Since the ILP problem is difficult to solve in a practical time, this paper proposes a heuristic algorithm. In the routing decision process, the proposed algorithm gives the highest priority to the node pair that has the highest product of the total amount of injected traffic by one node and total amount of received traffic by the other node in the pair, where both traffic volumes are specified in the hose model, and enables a source node to select the neighbor node that minimizes network congestion ratio for the worst case traffic condition specified by the hose model. The non-split S-OSPF scheme's network congestion ratios are compared with those of the split S-OSPF and classical shortest path routing (SPR) schemes. Numerical results show that the non-split S-OSPF scheme offers lower network congestion ratios than the classical SPR scheme, and achieves network congestion ratios comparable to the split S-OSPF scheme for larger networks. To validate the non-split S-OSPF scheme, using a testbed network experimentally, we develop prototypes of the non-split S-OSPF path computation server and the non-split S-OSPF router. The functionalities of these prototypes are demonstrated in a non-split S-OSPF network.

We have fabricated MOS capacitors with a hybrid floating gate (FG) consisting of Ni silicide nanodots (NiSi-NDs) and silicon-quantum-dots (Si-QDs) and studied electron transfer characteristics in the hybrid FG structures induced by the irradiation of 1310 nm light. The flat-band voltage shift due to the charging of the hybrid FG under light irradiation was lower than that in the dark. The observed optical response can be attributed to the shift of the charge centroid in the hybrid FG caused by the photoexcitation of electrons in NiSi-NDs and their transfer to Si-QDs. The photoexcited electron transfer from the NiSi-NDs to the Si-QDs in response to pulsed gate voltages was also evaluated from the increase in transient current caused by the light irradiation. The amount of transferred charge is likely to increase in proportion to pulse gate voltage.

In this paper, we presented a novel method for automatic pronunciation quality assessment. Unlike the popular “Goodness of Pronunciation” (GOP) method, this method does not map the decoding confidence into pronunciation quality score, but differentiates the different pronunciation quality utterances directly. In this method, the student's utterance need to be decoded for two times. The first-time decoding was for getting the time points of each phone of the utterance by a forced alignment using a conventional trained acoustic model (AM). The second-time decoding was for differentiating the pronunciation quality for each triphone using a specially trained AM, where the triphones in different pronunciation qualities were trained as different units, and the model was trained in discriminative method to ensure the model has the best discrimination among the triphones whose names were same but pronunciation quality scores were different. The decoding network in the second-time decoding included different pronunciation quality triphones, so the phone-level scores can be obtained from the decoding result directly. The phone-level scores were combined into the sentence-level scores using maximum entropy criterion. The experimental results shows that the scoring performance was increased significantly compared to the GOP method, especially in sentence-level.

First, this paper derives the prefix sum-of-products expression (PreSOP) and the number of products in a PreSOP for an interval function. Second, it derives Ψ(n,τp), the number of n-variable interval functions that can be represented with τp products. Finally, it shows that more than 99.9% of the n-variable interval functions can be represented with ⌈ n - 1 ⌉ products, when n is sufficiently large. These results are useful for a fast PreSOP generator and for estimating the size of ternary content addressable memories (TCAMs) for packet classification.

This paper reviews methods for computer assisted medical intervention using statistical models and machine learning technologies, which would be particularly useful for representing prior information of anatomical shape, motion, and deformation to extrapolate intraoperative sparse data as well as surgeons' expertise and pathology to optimize interventions. Firstly, we present a review of methods for recovery of static anatomical structures by only using intraoperative data without any preoperative patient-specific information. Then, methods for recovery of intraoperative motion and deformation are reviewed by combining intraoperative sparse data with preoperative patient-specific stationary data, which is followed by a survey of articles which incorporated biomechanics. Furthermore, the articles are reviewed which addressed the used of statistical models for optimization of interventions. Finally, we conclude the survey by describing the future perspective.

Identification of early aspects is the critical problem in aspect-oriented requirement engineering. But the representation of crosscutting concerns is various, which makes the identification difficult. To address the problem, this paper proposes the AspectQuery method based on goal model. We analyze four kinds of goal decomposition models, then summarize the main factors about identification of crosscutting concerns and conclude the identification rules based on a goal model. A goal is crosscutting concern when it satisfies one of the following conditions: i) the goal is contributed to realize one soft-goal; ii) parent goal of the goal is candidate crosscutting concern; iii) the goal has at least two parent goals. AspectQuery includes four steps: building the goal model, transforming the goal model, identifying the crosscutting concerns by identification rules, and composing the crosscutting concerns with the goals affected by them. We illustrate the AspectQuery method through a case study (a ticket booking management system). The results show the effectiveness of AspectQuery in identifying crosscutting concerns in the requirement phase.

This paper describes a low-power VLSI chip for speaker-independent 60-kWord continuous speech recognition based on a context-dependent Hidden Markov Model (HMM). It features a compression-decoding scheme to reduce the external memory bandwidth for Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) computation and multi-path Viterbi transition units. We optimize the internal SRAM size using the max-approximation GMM calculation and adjusting the number of look-ahead frames. The test chip, fabricated in 40 nm CMOS technology, occupies 1.77 mm2.18 mm containing 2.52 M transistors for logic and 4.29 Mbit on-chip memory. The measured results show that our implementation achieves 34.2% required frequency reduction (83.3 MHz), 48.5% power consumption reduction (74.14 mW) for 60 k-Word real-time continuous speech recognition compared to the previous work while 30% of the area is saved with recognition accuracy of 90.9%. This chip can maximally process 2.4faster than real-time at 200 MHz and 1.1 V with power consumption of 168 mW. By increasing the beam width, better recognition accuracy (91.45%) can be achieved. In that case, the power consumption for real-time processing is increased to 97.4 mW and the max-performance is decreased to 2.08because of the increased computation workload.

Power consumption has recently emerged as a first class design constraint in system LSI designs. Specially, leakage power has occupied a large part of the total power consumption. Therefore, reduction of leakage power is indispensable for efficient design of high-performance system LSIs. Since 2006, we have carried out a research project called “Innovative Power Control for Ultra Low-Power and High-Performance System LSIs”, supported by Japan Science and Technology Agency as a CREST research program. One of the major objectives of this project is reducing the leakage power consumption of system LSIs by innovative power control through tight cooperation and co-optimization of circuit technology, architecture, and system software designs. In this project, we focused on power gating as a circuit technique for reducing leakage power. Temporal granularity is one of the most important issue in power gating. Thus, we have developed a series of Geysers as proof-of-concept CPUs which provide several mechanisms of fine-grained run-time power gating. In this paper, we describe their concept and design, and explain why co-optimization of different design layers are important. Then, three kinds of power gating implementations and their evaluation are presented from the view point of power saving and temporal granularity.

We present an optimization algorithm for the design of multilayer antireflection (AR) coatings for organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. When a set of available materials for the AR films is given, the proposed method allows for searching the globally optimized AR structure that maximizes the short-circuit current density (JSC) under simulated solar light illumination (AM 1.5). By applying this method to an OPV solar cell with a configuration of Al/P3HT:PCBM/MoO3/ITO, we demonstrated that JSC can increase by 7.5% with a 6-layer AR coating, consisting of MgF2, ZnS, and Al2O3. A notable feature of this method is that it can find not only the optimal solution, which maximizes JSC , but also the quasi-optimal solutions, which increase JSC to nearly maximum levels. We showed that the quasi-optimal solution may have higher robustness against deviations in film thicknesses, from their designated values. This method indicates the importance of practically useful, non-optimal solutions for designing AR coatings. The present method allows for extending the user's choices and facilitates the realization of a practical design for an AR coating.

Communication-induced checkpointing (CIC) has two main advantages: first, it allows processes in a distributed computation to take asynchronous checkpoints, and secondly, it avoids the domino effect. To achieve these, CIC algorithms piggyback information on the application messages and take forced local checkpoints when they recognize potentially dangerous patterns. The main disadvantages of CIC algorithms are the amount of overhead per message and the induced storage overhead. In this paper we present a communication-induced checkpointing algorithm called Scalable Fully-Informed (S-FI) that attacks the problem of message overhead. For this, our algorithm modifies the Fully-Informed algorithm by integrating it with the immediate dependency principle. The S-FI algorithm was simulated and the result shows that the algorithm is scalable since the message overhead presents an under-linear growth as the number of processes and/or the message density increase.

This paper presents an M-channel (M=2n (n ∈ N)) integer discrete cosine transforms (IntDCTs) based on fast Hartley transform (FHT) for lossy-to-lossless image coding which has image quality scalability from lossy data to lossless data. Many IntDCTs with lifting structures have already been presented to achieve lossy-to-lossless image coding. Recently, an IntDCT based on direct-lifting of DCT/IDCT, which means direct use of DCT and inverse DCT (IDCT) to lifting blocks, has been proposed. Although the IntDCT shows more efficient coding performance than any conventional IntDCT, it entails many computational costs due to an extra information that is a key point to realize its direct-lifting structure. On the other hand, the almost conventional IntDCTs without an extra information cannot be easily expanded to a larger size than the standard size M=8, or the conventional IntDCT should be improved for efficient coding performance even if it realizes an arbitrary size. The proposed IntDCT does not need any extra information, can be applied to size M=2n for arbitrary n, and shows better coding performance than the conventional IntDCTs without any extra information by applying the direct-lifting to the pre- and post-processing block of DCT. Moreover, the proposed IntDCT is implemented with a half of the computational cost of the IntDCT based on direct-lifting of DCT/IDCT even though it shows the best coding performance.

Three dimensional integration using Through-Silicon Vias (TSVs) offers short inter-layer interconnects and higher packing density. In order to take advantage of these attributes, a novel hybrid 3D NoC-Bus architecture is proposed in the paper. For vertical link, a Fake Token Bus architecture is elaborated, which utilizes the bandwidth efficiently by updating token synchronously. Based on this bus architecture, a methodology of hybrid 3D NoC-Bus design is introduced. The network hybridizes with the bus in vertical link and distributes long links of the full connected network into different layers, which achieves a network with a diameter of only 3 hops and limited radix. In addition, a congestion-aware routing algorithm applied to the hybrid network is proposed. The algorithm routes packets in horizontal firstly when the bus is busy, which balances the communication and reduces the possibility of congestion. Experimental results show that our network can achieve a 34.4% reduction in latency and a 43% reduction in power consumption under uniform random traffic and a 36.9% reduction in latency and a 48% reduction in power consumption under hotspot traffic over regular 3D mesh implementations on average.

Crohn's disease commonly affects the small and large intestines. Its symptoms include ulcers and intestinal stenosis, and its diagnosis is currently performed using an endoscope. However, because the endoscope cannot pass through the stenosed parts of the intestines, diagnosis of the entire intestines is difficult. A CT image-based method is expected to become an alternative way for the diagnosis of Crohn's disease because it enables observation of the entire intestine even if stenosis exists. To achieve efficient CT image-based diagnosis, diagnostic-aid by computers is required. This paper presents an automated detection method of the surface of ulcers in the small and large intestines from fecal tagging CT images. Ulcers cause rough surfaces on the intestinal wall and consist of small convex and concave (CC) regions. We detect them by blob and inverse-blob structure enhancement filters. A roughness value is utilized to reduce the false positives of the detection results. Many CC regions are concentrated in ulcers. The roughness value evaluates the concentration ratio of the detected regions. Detected regions with low roughness values are removed by a thresholding process. The thickness of the intestinal lumen and the CT values of the surrounding tissue of the intestinal lumen are also used to reduce false positives. Experimental results using ten cases of CT images showed that our proposed method detects 70.6% of ulcers with 12.7 FPs/case. The proposed method detected most of the ulcers.

We propose an efficient network design algorithm that realizes shared protection. The algorithm iteratively improves the degree of wavelength resource usage and fiber utilization. To achieve this, we newly define two metrics to evaluate the degree of wavelength resource usage of a pair of working/backup paths and the fiber utilization efficiency. The proposed method iteratively redesigns groups of paths that are selected in the order determined by the metrics. A numerical analysis verifies that the proposed algorithm can substantially reduce the required wavelength resources and hence fiber cost. It is also verified that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is small enough to terminate within practicable time.

This paper presents a decoupling capacitance boosting method for the resonant supply noise reduction by fast voltage hopping of DVS systems. The proposed method utilizes a foot transistor as a switch between a conventional decoupling capacitor (decap) and GND. The switching controls of the foot transistor depending on the supply noise states achieve an effective noise reduction as well as fast settling time compared with the conventional passive decaps. The measurement results of a test chip fabricated in a 0.18 µm CMOS technology show 12X boost of effective decap value, and 65.8% supply noise reduction with 96% settling time improvement.

In this paper, a symbol-rate clock recovery scheme for a receiver that uses an integrating decision feedback equalizer (DFE) is proposed. The proposed clock recovery using expected received signal amplitudes as the criterion realizes minimum mean square error (MMSE) clock recovery. A receiver architecture using an integrating DFE with the proposed symbol-rate clock recovery is also proposed. The proposed clock recovery algorithm successfully recovered the clock phase in a system level simulation only with a DFE. Higher jitter tolerance than 0.26 UIPP at 10 Gb/s operation was also confirmed in the simulation with an 11 dB channel loss at 5 GHz.
