This study investigates a two/three-dimensional (2D/3D) symbol-mapping technique that evaluates data transmission quality based on a four-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM-4) symbol transition. Multi-dimensional symbol transition mapping facilitates the visualization of the degree of interference (ISI). The simulation and experimental results demonstrated that the 2D symbol mapping can evaluate the PAM-4 data transmission quality degraded by ISI and visualize the equalization effect. Furthermore, potential applications of 2D mapping and its extension to 3D mapping were explored.

This paper proposes a scatterer information estimation method using numerical data for the response waveform of a backward transient scattering field for both E- and H-polarizations when a two-dimensional (2-D) coated metal cylinder is selected as a scatterer. It is assumed that a line source and an observation point are placed at different locations. The four types of scatterer information covered in this paper are the relative permittivity of a surrounding medium, the relative permittivity of a coating medium layer and its thickness, and the radius of a coated metal cylinder. Specifically, a time-domain saddle-point technique (TD-SPT) is used to derive scatterer information estimation formulae from the amplitude intensity ratios (AIRs) of adjacent backward transient scattering field components. The estimates are obtained by substituting the numerical data of the response waveforms of the backward transient scattering field components into the estimation formulae and performing iterative calculations. Furthermore, a minimum thickness of a coating medium layer for which the estimation method is valid is derived, and two kinds of applicable conditions for the estimation method are proposed. The effectiveness of the scatterer information estimation method is verified by comparing the estimates with the set values. The noise tolerance and convergence characteristics of the estimation method and the method of controlling the estimation accuracy are also discussed.

In this letter, we study the dynamic antenna grouping and the hybrid beamforming for high altitude platform (HAP) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We first exploit the fact that the ergodic sum rate is only related to statistical channel state information (SCSI) in the large-scale array regime, and then we utilize it to perform the dynamic antenna grouping and design the RF beamformer. By applying the Gershgorin Circle Theorem, the dynamic antenna grouping is realized based on the novel statistical distance metric instead of the value of the instantaneous channels. The RF beamformer is designed according to the singular value decomposition of the statistical correlation matrix according to the obtained dynamic antenna group. Dynamic subarrays mean each RF chain is linked with a dynamic antenna sub-set. The baseband beamformer is derived by utilizing the zero forcing (ZF). Numerical results demonstrate the performance enhancement of our proposed dynamic hybrid precoding (DHP) algorithm.

Space is becoming increasingly congested and contested, which calls for effective means to conduct effective monitoring of high-value space assets, especially in Space Situational Awareness (SSA) missions, while there are imperfections in existing methods and corresponding algorithms. To overcome such a problem, this letter proposes an algorithm for accurate Connected Element Interferometry (CEI) in SSA based on more interpolation information and iterations. Simulation results show that: (i) after iterations, the estimated asymptotic variance of the proposed method can basically achieve uniform convergence, and the ratio of it to ACRB is 1.00235 in δ0 ∈ [-0.5, 0.5], which is closer to 1 than the current best AM algorithms; (ii) In the interval of SNR ∈ [-14dB, 0dB], the estimation error of the proposed algorithm decreases significantly, which is basically comparable to CRLB (maintains at 1.236 times). The research of this letter could play a significant role in effective monitoring and high-precision tracking and measurement with significant space targets during futuristic SSA missions.

We evaluated the transmission performance, including received power and transmission throughput characteristics, in 4×4 single-user multiple-input multiple-output (SU-MIMO) transmission for synchronous time division duplex (TDD) and downlink data channels in comparison with single-input single-output (SISO) transmission in an environment where a local 5G wireless base station was installed on the roof of a research building at our university. Accordingly, for the received power characteristics, the difference between the simulation value, which was based on the ray tracing method, and the experimental value at 32 points in the area was within a maximum difference of approximately 10 dB, and sufficient compliance was obtained. Regarding the transmission throughput versus received power characteristics, after showing a simulation method for evaluating throughput characteristics in MIMO, we compared the results with experimental results. The cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the transmission throughput shows that, at a CDF of 50%, in SISO transmission, the simulated value is approximately 115Mbps, and the experimental value is 105Mbps, within a difference of approximately 10Mbps. By contrast, in MIMO transmission, the simulation value is 380Mbps, and the experimental value is approximately 420Mbps, which is a difference of approximately 40Mbps. It was shown that the received power and transmission throughput characteristics can be predicted with sufficient accuracy by obtaining the delay profile and the system model at each reception point using the both ray tracing and MIMO simulation methods in actual environments.

We have developed an all-optical fiber link antenna measurement system for a millimeter wave 5th generation mobile communication frequency band around 28 GHz. Our developed system consists of an optical fiber link an electrical signal transmission system, an antenna-coupled-electrode electric-field (EO) sensor system for 28GHz-band as an electrical signal receiving system, and a 6-axis vertically articulated robot with an arm length of 1m. Our developed optical fiber link electrical signal transmission system can transmit the electrical signal of more than 40GHz with more than -30dBm output level. Our developed EO sensor can receive the electrical signal from 27GHz to 30GHz. In addition, we have estimated a far field antenna factor of the EO sensor system for the 28GHz-band using an amplitude center modified antenna factor estimation equation. The estimated far field antenna factor of the sensor system is 83.2dB/m at 28GHz.

We evaluated the energy efficiency per 1-bit transmission of an optical light source on InP substrate to achieve optical interconnection. A semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) assisted extended reach EADFB laser (AXEL) was utilized as the optical light source to enhance the energy efficiency compared to the conventional electro-absorption modulator integrated with a DFB laser (EML). The AXEL has frequency bandwidth extendibility for operation of over 100Gbit/s, which is difficult when using a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) without an equalizer. By designing the AXEL for low power consumption, we were able to achieve 64-Gbit/s, 1.0pJ/bit and 128-Gbit/s, 1.5pJ/bit operation at 50°C with the transmitter dispersion and eye closure quaternary of 1.1dB.

This study numerically investigates the symbol-level allocation of four-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM4) signals for optically pre-amplified receiver systems. Three level-allocation schemes are examined: intensity-equispaced, amplitude-equispaced, and numerically optimized. Numerical simulations are conducted to comprehensively compare the receiver sensitivities for these level-allocation schemes under various system conditions. The results show that the superiority or inferiority between the level allocations is significantly dependent on the system conditions of the bandwidth of amplified spontaneous emission light, modulation bandwidth, and signal extinction ratio (ER). The mechanisms underlying these dependencies are also discussed.
In recent years, driver's visual attention has been actively studied for driving automation technology. However, the number of models is few to perceive an insight understanding of driver's attention in various moments. All attention models process multi-level image representations by a two-stream/multi-stream network, increasing the computational cost due to an increment of model parameters. However, multi-level image representation such as optical flow plays a vital role in tasks involving videos. Therefore, to reduce the computational cost of a two-stream network and use multi-level image representation, this work proposes a single stream driver's visual attention model for a critical situation. The experiment was conducted using a publicly available critical driving dataset named BDD-A. Qualitative results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed model. Moreover, quantitative results highlight that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art visual attention models according to CC and SIM. Extensive ablation studies verify the presence of optical flow in the model, the position of optical flow in the spatial network, the convolution layers to process optical flow, and the computational cost compared to a two-stream model.
In this paper, we propose an interpretation method on amplitude intensities for response waveforms of backward transient scattered field components for both E- and H-polarizations by a 2-D coated metal cylinder. A time-domain (TD) asymptotic solution, which is referred to as a TD Fourier transform method (TD-FTM), is derived by applying the FTM to a backward transient scattered field expressed by an integral form. The TD-FTM is represented by a combination of a direct geometric optical ray (DGO) and a reflected GO (RGO) series. We use the TD-FTM to derive amplitude intensity ratios (AIRs) between adjacent backward transient scattered field components. By comparing the numerical values of the AIRs with those of the influence factors that compose the AIRs, major factor(s) can be identified, thereby allowing detailed interpretation method on the amplitude intensities for the response waveforms of backward transient scattered field components. The accuracy and practicality of the TD-FTM are evaluated by comparing it with three reference solutions. The effectiveness of an interpretation method on the amplitude intensities for response waveforms of backward transient scattered field components is revealed by identifying major factor(s) affecting the amplitude intensities.
This brief presents A 16/32Gb/s dual-mode transmitter including a linearity calibration loop to maintain amplitude linearity of the SST driver. Linearity detection and corresponding master-slave power supply circuits are designed to implement the proposed architecture. The proposed transmitter is manufactured in a 22nm FD-SOI process. The linearity calibration loop reduces the peak INL errors of the transmitter by 50%, and the RLM rises from 92.4% to 98.5% when the transmitter is in PAM4 mode. The chip area of the transmitter is 0.067mm2, while the proposed linearity enhanced part is 0.05×0.02mm2 and the total power consumption is 64.6mW with a 1.1V power supply. The linearity calibration loop can be detached from the circuit without consuming extra power.

Codebooks with small maximal cross-correlation amplitudes have important applications in code division multiple access (CDMA) communication, coding theory and compressed sensing. In this letter, we design a new codebook based on a construction of Ramanujan graphs over finite abelian groups. We prove that the new codebook with length K=q+1 and size N=q2+2q+2 is asymptotically optimal with nearly achieving the Levenshtein bound when n=3, where q is a prime power. The parameters of the new codebook are new.
A new software based in-situ training (SBIST) method to achieve high accuracies is proposed for binarized neural networks inference accelerator chips in which measured offsets in sense amplifiers (activation binarizers) are transformed into biases in the training software. To expedite this individual training, the initial values for the weights are taken from results of a common forming training process which is conducted in advance by using the offset fluctuation distribution averaged over the fabrication line. SPICE simulation inference results for the accelerator predict that the accuracy recovers to higher than 90% even when the amplifier offset is as large as 40mV only after a few epochs of the individual training.

We propose an augmented-reality-based method for arranging furniture using natural markers extracted from the edges of the walls of rooms. The proposed method extracts natural markers and estimates the camera parameters from single images of rooms using deep neural networks. Experimental results show that in all the measurements, the superimposition error of the proposed method was lower than that of general marker-based methods that use practical-sized markers.

High-altitude platform stations (HAPSs) are recognized as a promising technology for coverage extension in the sixth generation (6G) mobile communications and beyond. The purpose of this study is to develop a HAPS system with a coverage radius of 100km and high capacity by focusing on the following two aspects: array antenna structure and user selection. HAPS systems must jointly use massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) and multiuser MIMO techniques to increase their capacity. However, the coverage achieved by a conventional planar array antenna is limited to a circular area with a radius of only tens of kilometers. A conventional semi-orthogonal user selection (SUS) scheme based on the orthogonality of channel vectors achieves high capacity, but it has high complexity. First, this paper proposes a cylindrical mMIMO system to achieve an ultra-wide coverage radius of 100km and high capacity. Second, this paper presents a novel angle-based user selection (AUS) scheme, where a user selection problem is formulated as a maximization of the minimum angular difference between users over all user groups. Finally, a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm (SA) for AUS is also proposed. Assuming an area with a 100km radius, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed cylindrical mMIMO system improves the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio by approx. 12dB at the boundary of the area, and it achieves approx. 1.5 times higher capacity than the conventional mMIMO which uses a planar array antenna. In addition, the results show that the proposed AUS scheme improves the lower percentiles in the system capacity distribution compared with SUS and basic random user selection. Furthermore, the computational complexity of the proposed SA is in the order of only 1/4000 that of SUS.
In this paper, we address the problem of detector design in severely frequency-selective channels for spatial multiplexing systems that adopt filter bank multicarrier based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) as the communication waveforms. We consider decision feedback equalizers (DFEs) that use multiple feedback filters to jointly cancel the post-cursor components of inter-symbol interference, inter-antenna interference, and, in some configuration, inter-subchannel interference. By exploiting the special structures of the correlation matrix and the staggered property of the FBMC/OQAM signals, we obtain an efficient method of computing the DFE coefficients that requires a smaller number of multiplications than the linear equalizer (LE) and conventional DFE do. The simulation results show that the proposed detectors considerably outperform the LE and conventional DFE at moderate-to-high signal-to-noise ratios.

Path loss in high frequency bands above 6GHz is the most fundamental and significant propagation characteristic of IMT-2020. To develop and evaluate such high frequency bands, ITU-R SG5 WP5D recently released channel models applicable up to 100GHz. The channel models include path loss models applicable to 0.5-100GHz. A path loss model is used for cell design and the evaluation of the radio technologies, which is the main purpose of WP5D. Prediction accuracy in various locations, Tx positions, frequency bands, and other parameters are significant in cell design. This article presents the prediction accuracy of UMa path loss models which are detailed in Report ITU-R M.2412 for IMT-2020. We also propose UMa_A' as an extension model of UMa_A. While UMa_A applies different equations to the bands below and above 6GHz to predict path loss, UMa_A' covers all bands by using the equations of UMa_A below 6GHz. By using the UMa_A' model, we can predict path loss by taking various parameters (such as BS antenna height) into account over a wide frequency range (0.5-100GHz). This is useful for considering the deployment of BS antennas at various positions with a wide frequency band. We verify model accuracy by extensive measurements in the frequency bands from 2 to 66GHz, distances up to 1600 m, and an UMa environment with three Tx antenna heights. The UMa_A' extension model can predict path loss with the low RMSE of about 7dB at 2-26.4GHz, which is more accurate than the UMa_A and UMa_B models. Although the applicability of the UMa_A' model at 66GHz is unclear and needs further verification, the evaluation results for 66GHz demonstrate that the antenna height may affect the prediction accuracy at 66GHz.

Inter-channel crosstalk is one of the limiting factors in multichannel optical systems. This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the bit-error-rate (BER) performance of quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals influenced by multiple crosstalk channels. The field distribution of multiple crosstalk channels in the constellation map is calculated. The BER of the QPSK/QAM signal, onto which the crosstalk light is superimposed, is then evaluated for a varying number of crosstalk channels under the condition that the total crosstalk power is constant. The results quantitatively confirm that as the channel number increases, the BER degradation caused by crosstalk light approaches that caused by Gaussian noise light. It is also confirmed that the degradations caused by crosstalk light and Gaussian light are similar for QAM signals of high-level modulation.

This paper proposes coded modulation for physical layer network coding in multiple input multiple output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) bi-directional wireless relay systems where precoding is applied. The proposed coded modulation enables the relays to decode the received signals, which improves the transmission performance. Soft input decoding for the proposed coded modulation is proposed. Furthermore, we propose two precoder weight optimization techniques, called “per subcarrier weight optimization” and “total weight optimization”. This paper shows a precoder configuration based on the optimization with the lattice reduction or the sorted QR-decomposition. The performance of the proposed network coding is evaluated by computer simulation in a MIMO-OFDM two-hop wireless relay system with the 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) or the 256QAM. The proposed coded modulation attains a coding gain of about 2dB at the BER of 10-4. The total weight optimization achieves about 1dB better BER performance than the other at the BER of 10-4.
