  • Phonetically Balanced Text Corpus Design Using a Similarity Measure for a Stereo Super-Wideband Speech Database

    In this paper, we propose a text corpus design method for a Korean stereo super-wideband speech database. Since a small-sized text corpus for speech coding is generally required for speech coding, the corpus should be designed to comply with the pronunciation behavior of natural conversation in order to ensure efficient speech quality tests. To this end, the proposed design method utilizes a similarity measure between the phoneme distribution occurring from natural conversation and that from the designed text corpus. In order to achieve this goal, we first collect and refine text data from textbooks and websites. Next, a corpus is designed from the refined text data based on the similarity measure to compare phoneme distributions. We then construct a Korean stereo super-wideband speech (K-SW) database using the designed text corpus, where the recording environment is set to meet the conditions defined by ITU-T. Finally, the subjective quality of the K-SW database is evaluated using an ITU-T super-wideband codec in order to demonstrate that the K-SW database is useful for developing and evaluating super-wideband codecs.

    Since retina blood vessels (RBV) are a major factor in ophthalmological diagnosis, it is essential to detect RBV from a fundus image. In this letter, we proposed the detection method of RBV using a morphological analysis and support vector machine classification. The proposed RBV detection method consists of three strategies: pre-processing, features extraction and classification. In pre-processing, noises were reduced and RBV were enhanced by anisotropic diffusion filtering and illumination equalization. Features were extracted by using the image intensity and morphology of RBV. And a support vector machine (SVM) classification algorithm was used to detect RBV. The proposed RBV detection method was simulated and validated by using the DRIVE database. The averages of accuracy and TPR are 0.94 and 0.78, respectively. Moreover, by comparison, we confirmed that the proposed RBV detection method detected RBV better than the recent RBV detections methods.

    These days, cheap and intelligent sensors, networked through wireless links and deployed in large numbers, provide unprecedented opportunities for monitoring and controlling homes, cities and the environment. Networked sensors also offer a broad range of applications. Localization capability is essential in most wireless sensor networks applications; for instance in environmental monitoring applications such as animal habitat monitoring, bush fire surveillance, water quality monitoring and precision agriculture, the measurement data are meaningless without accurate knowledge of where they are obtained. Localization techniques are used to determine location information by estimating the location of each sensor node. Distance measurement errors are commonly known to affect the accuracy of the estimated location; resulting in errors that may be due to inherent or environmental factors. Trilateration [1] is a well-known method for localizing nodes by using the distances to three anchor nodes; yet it performs poorly when they are many distance measurement errors. Therefore, we propose the LRD (Localization with Ratio-Distance) algorithm, which performs strongly even in the presence of many measurement errors associated with the estimated distance to anchor nodes. Simulations using the OPNET Modeler show that LRD is more accurate than trilateration.

    A stereo video coding scheme which is compatible with monoview-processor is presented in this paper. At the same time, this paper proposes an adaptive prediction structure which can make different prediction modes to be applied to different groups of picture (GOPs) according to temporal correlations and interview correlations to improve the coding efficiency. Moreover, the most advanced video coding standard H.264 is used conveniently for maximize the coding efficiency in this paper. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by extensive experimental results.

    High-performance 1.3-µm electroabsorption modulators integrated with DFB lasers are developed for long-reach 100 Gbit Ethernet. The dynamic extinction ratio of over 8-dB with the voltage swing of 2 V are achieved for the four LAN-WDM lanes (14 nm wavelength range) used in 100 Gbit Ethernet with the same modulator structure. The fabricated devices are packaged in butterfly modules and four-lane 40-km single mode fiber transmission at 25-Gbit/s operation is demonstrated. Further, a can-type transmitter optical subassembly is fabricated to reduce the cost and size of transmitter modules. The use of a low-dielectric-constant liquid crystal polymer transmission line makes the 3-dB bandwidth larger and enables 25-Gbit/s operation with CAN-TOSA module.

    We demonstrate an all-optical picosecond pulse duration-tunable nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ)-to-return-to-zero (RZ) data format conversion using a Raman amplifier-based compressor and a fiber-based four-wave mixing (FWM) switch. A NRZ data signal is injected into the fiber-based FWM switch (AND gate) with a compressed RZ clock by the Raman amplifier-based compressor, and convert to RZ data signal by the fiber-based FWM switch. The compressed RZ clock train acts as a pump signal in the fiber-based FWM switch to perform the NRZ-to-RZ data format conversion. By changing the Raman pump power of the Raman amplifier-based compressor, it is possible to tune the pulse duration of the converted RZ data signal from 15 ps to 2 ps. In all the tuning range, the receiver sensitivity at bit error rate (BER) of 10-9 for the converted RZ data signal was about 1.31.7 dB better than the receiver sensitivity of the input NRZ data signal. Moreover, the pulse pedestal of the converted RZ data signals is well suppressed owing to the FWM process in the fiber-based FWM switch.

    Existing filtering methods of TCP ACK packets are known to be effective in reducing the required bandwidth, resulting in the improvement of TCP throughput. However, the methods cannot handle the filtering of piggyback ACK packets. Considering that most TCP applications require bidirectional data exchange, the lack of the functionality to deal with the piggyback ACK packets should be addressed. This paper proposes a novel filtering scheme for WiMAX systems that can handle the piggyback ACK packets. The novelty comes from the fact that the proposed method overlaps the processing time of packet merging with the round trip delay of the bandwidth request-and-grant procedure. It is advantageous because it does not require extra time for the merging. The results from an analytical model and simulations show that the required uplink bandwidth is decreased while the downlink throughput is increased.

  • Bias-Based Training for Iterative Channel Estimation and Data Decoding in Fast Fading Channels

    A novel signaling scheme is proposed for iterative channel estimation and data decoding in fast fading channels. The basic idea is to bias the occurrence probability of transmitted symbols. A priori information about the bias is utilized for channel estimation. The bias-based scheme is constructed as a serially concatenated code, in which a convolutional code and a biased nonlinear block code are used as the outer and inner codes, respectively. This construction allows the receiver to estimate channel state information (CSI) efficiently. The proposed scheme is numerically shown to outperform conventional pilot-based schemes in terms of spectral efficiency for moderately fast fading channels.

    Nearest neighbor search (NNS) among large-scale and high-dimensional vectors plays an important role in recent large-scale multimedia search applications. This paper proposes an optimized multiple codebook construction method for an approximate NNS scheme based on product quantization, where sets of residual sub-vectors are clustered according to their distribution and the codebooks for product quantization are constructed from these clusters. Our approach enables us to adaptively select the number of codebooks to be used by trading between the search accuracy and the amount of memory available.

  • Use of Area Layout Information for RSSI-Based Indoor Target Tracking Methods

    For an indoor area where a target node is tracked with anchor nodes, we can calculate the priori probability density functions (pdfs) on the distances between the target and anchor nodes by using its shape, three-dimensional sizes and anchor nodes locations. We call it “the area layout information (ALI)” and apply it for two indoor target tracking methods with received signal strength indication (RSSI) assuming a square location estimation area. First, we introduce the ALI to a target tracking method which tracks a target using the weighted sum of its past-to-present locations by a simple infinite impulse response (IIR) low pass filter. Second, we show that the ALI is applicable to a target tracking method with a particle filter where the motion of the target is nonlinearly modelled. The performances of the two tracking methods are evaluated by not only computer simulations but also experiments. The results demonstrate that the use of ALI can successfully improve the location estimation performance of both target tracking methods, without huge increase of computational complexity.

    This paper proposes a new sine wave approximation method for the PAC of DDFS. Sine wave is approximated by removing the harmonic components from trapezoid waveform. Experimental results show that the proposed PAC is advantageous in the SFDR range less than 60 dBc due to its small hardware cost.

  • Image Inpainting Based on Adaptive Total Variation Model

    In this letter, a novel adaptive total variation (ATV) model is proposed for image inpainting. The classical TV model is a partial differential equation (PDE)-based technique. While the TV model can preserve the image edges well, it has some drawbacks, such as staircase effect in the inpainted image and slow convergence rate. By analyzing the diffusion mechanism of TV model and introducing a new edge detection operator named difference curvature, we propose a novel ATV inpainting model. The proposed ATV model can diffuse the image information smoothly and quickly, namely, this model not only eliminates the staircase effect but also accelerates the convergence rate. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

    Several task forces have been working on how to design the future Internet in a clean slate manner and mobility management is one of the key issues to be considered. However, mobility management in the future Internet is still being designed in an “all-in-one” way where all management functions are tightly kept at a single location and this results in cost inefficiency that can be an obstruction to constructing flexible systems. In this paper, we propose a new function-distributed mobility management architecture that can enable more flexible future Internet construction. Furthermore, we show the effectiveness of our proposed system via a cost analysis and computer simulation with a random walk mobility model.

  • Differential Behavior Equivalent Classes of Shift Register Equivalents for Secure and Testable Scan Design

    It is important to find an efficient design-for-testability methodology that satisfies both security and testability, although there exists an inherent contradiction between security and testability for digital circuits. In our previous work, we reported a secure and testable scan design approach by using extended shift registers that are functionally equivalent but not structurally equivalent to shift registers, and showed a security level by clarifying the cardinality of those classes of shift register equivalents (SR-equivalents). However, SR-equivalents are not always secure for scan-based side-channel attacks. In this paper, we consider a scan-based differential-behavior attack and propose several classes of SR-equivalent scan circuits using dummy flip-flops in order to protect the scan-based differential-behavior attack. To show the security level of those SR-equivalent scan circuits, we introduce a differential-behavior equivalent relation and clarify the number of SR-equivalent scan circuits, the number of differential-behavior equivalent classes and the cardinality of those equivalent classes.

  • A 65 nm 1.2 V 7-bit 1 GSPS Folding-Interpolation A/D Converter with a Digitally Self-Calibrated Vector Generator

    In this paper, a 65 nm 1.2 V 7-bit 1GSPS folding-interpolation A/D converter with a digitally self-calibrated vector generator is proposed. The folding rate is 2 and the interpolation rate is 8. A self-calibrated vector generation circuit with a feedback loop and a recursive digital code inspection is described. The circuit reduces the variation of the offset voltage caused by process mismatches, parasitic resistors, and parasitic capacitances. The chip has been fabricated with a 65 nm 1-poly 6-metal CMOS technology. The effective chip area is 0.87 mm2 and the power consumption is about 110 mW with a 1.2 V power supply. The measured SNDR is about 39.1 dB when the input frequency is 250 MHz at a 1 GHz sampling frequency. The measured SNDR is drastically improved in comparison with the same ADC without any calibration.

  • Wideband MIMO Compact Antennas with Tri-Polarizations

    Two designs of wideband compact MIMO antenna using printed dipoles are proposed in this paper. One is a three-port orthogonal polarization antenna and the other is a cube-six-port antenna. Measured results for the antennas show that they resonate at 2.6 GHz and support a bandwidth of over 400 MHz. The worst mutual coupling for the three-port orthogonal polarization antenna is kept under -20 dB whereas that level of the cube-six-port antenna is -18 dB. A number of experiments are conducted on MIMO systems with these compact antennas and linear antenna arrays. Measured data are analyzed to examine channel characteristics, such as cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of eigenvalues. Furthermore, the effect of different antenna configurations on channel capacity is highlighted and discussed. A high data rate capacity can be achieved with the compact antennas, particularly from the cube-six-port variant. These antennas might be applied in actual MIMO systems in wireless communications.

  • A Virtual Layered Space-Frequency Receiver Architecture with Iterative Decoding

    In this paper, a novel receiver architecture is proposed for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems; the proposed architecture helps achieve superior performance in multipath fading channels when the number of layered streams exceeds the number of receiving antennas. In this architecture, the concept of “virtual channel” is adopted to attain diversity gain even when successive detection is applied for reducing computational complexity, while orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is employed to combat multipath fading. Actually, successive detection is carried out in all possible virtual channels, and the virtual channel with the minimum error probability is detected with the assistance of the maximum a-posteriori (MAP) decoder in the architecture. In addition, soft input and soft output (SISO) iterative detection is introduced in the virtual channel estimation scheme. The performance of the proposed architecture is verified by computer simulations. This architecture can be implemented with lesser complexity than that in maximum likelihood detection (MLD), but the gain in the former case exceeds that in the latter by 4.5 dB at the BER of 10-3 for 42 MIMO-OFDM.

  • A Generalized Construction of Zero-Correlation Zone Sequence Set with Sequence Subsets

    The present paper introduces a new approach to the construction of a sequence set with a zero-correlation zone for both periodic and aperiodic correlation functions. The proposed sequences can be constructed from a pair of Hadamard matrices of orders n0 and n1. The constructed sequence set consists of n0 n1 ternary sequences, each of length n0(m+2)(n1+Δ), for a non-negative integer m and Δ ≥ 2. The zero-correlation zone of the proposed sequences is |τ| ≤ n0m+1-1, where τ is the phase shift. The proposed sequence set consists of n0 subsets, each with a member size n1. The correlation function of the sequences of a pair of different subsets, referred to as the inter-subset correlation function, has a zero-correlation zone with a width that is approximately Δ times that of the correlation function of sequences of the same subset (intra-subset correlation function). The inter-subset zero-correlation zone of the proposed sequences is |τ| ≤ Δn0m+1, where τ is the phase shift. The wide inter-subset zero-correlation enables performance improvement during application of the proposed sequence set.

  • Sinusoidal Parameter Estimation Using Roots of an Algebraic Equation

    An algorithm for estimating sinusoidal parameters is presented. In this paper, it is assumed that an observed signal is a single sinusoidal signal contaminated by white Gaussian noise. Based on this assumption, the sinusoidal parameters can be found by minimizing a cost function using the mean squared error (MSE) between the observed signal and a sinusoidal signal with arbitrary sinusoidal parameters. Because the cost function is nonlinear and not convex, it has undesirable local minima. To solve the minimization problem, we propose to use the roots of an algebraic equation. The algebraic equation is derived straightforwardly from the cost function. We show that the global solution is formulated by using the roots of the algebraic equation.
