    To overcome the problems of the modified Dickson pump like NCP-2, another pump (CCTS-1) where simple voltage doublers are cascaded in series and each of them has cross-coupled configuration is studied in this letter for possible use in low-voltage EEPROMs and DRAMs. Though this concept of cascading doublers has been previously proposed, it is firstly addressed in this letter that CCTS-1 has lower gate-oxide stress, improved voltage pumping gain, and better power efficiency than NCP-2 so that CCTS-1 can be more suitable for multi-stage pump in particular at low VCC. In addition, CCTS-2 is proposed to overcome the degraded body-effect of CCTS-1 without using boosted clocks when the stage number is large.

    The purpose of our study is to estimate the imaging of ischemic myocardial muscles in rats. The magnetocardiograms (MCG) of rats were measured by a 12-channel high resolution gradiometer, which consisted of 5 mm diameter pick-up coils with a 7.5 mm distance between each coil. MCGs of seven male rats were measured in a magnetically shielded room pre and post coronary artery occlusion. The source imaging was estimated by minimum norm estimation (MNE). Changes of the current source imaging pre- and post coronary artery occlusion were clarified. As a result, in the ST segment, the current distribution significantly increased at the ischemic area. In the T wave, the direction of the current distribution clearly shifted to the left thorax. We proved that the increased area of the current distribution in the ST segment was related to the ischemic area of the ventricular muscles.

    In this paper we discuss the estimation of effort needed to update program codes according to given design specification changes. In the Object-Oriented incremental development (OOID), the requirement changes occur frequently and regularly. When a requirement change occurs, a design specification is changed accordingly. Then a program code is updated for given design specification change. In order to construct the development plan dynamically, a simple and fast estimation method of efforts for code updating is strongly required by both developers and managers. However, existing estimation methods cannot be applied to the OOID. We therefore try to propose a straightforward approach to estimate effort for code updating, which reflects the specific properties of the OOID. We list up following factors of the effort estimation for OOID: (1) updating activities consist of creation, deletion, and modification, (2) the target to be updated has four kinds of types (void type, basic type, library type, and custom type), (3) the degree of information hiding is classified into private, protected and public, and (4) the degree of inheritance affects updating efforts. We then propose a new formula E(P,σ) to calculate the efforts needed to update a program P according to a set of design specification changes σ. The formula E(P,σ) includes weighting parameters: Wupd, Wtype, Winf-h and Winht according to the characteristics (1), (2), (3) and (4), respectively. Finally, we conduct experimental evaluations by applying the formula E(P,σ) to actual project data in a certain company. The evaluation results statistically showed the validity of the proposed approach to some extent.

    Although all-optical gate switches based on the intersubband absorption in nitride quantum wells are predicted to operate at 1 Tb/s, realization of strong intersubband absorption at the optical communication wavelength is still difficult. An alternative approach is an interferometer-type gate switch utilizing refractive index change due to the intersubband absorption of a control pulse at a longer wavelength. Feasibility of Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) gate switches, in which 1.55-µm pulses are controlled by 1.85-µm pulses, was theoretically investigated by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulator. Although the effective phase shift does not reach π, 22.5% of the signal pulse energy was predicted to be gated by a 10-pJ control pulse in the MZI switch. Even 1.3-µm pulses can be controlled by 1.85-µm pulses at the expense of the switching energy. This approach provides a way to process signal pulses at the optical communication wavelength utilizing strong intersubband absorption at a longer wavelength.

    This paper considers FIR filter design using linear predictive coding technique, for which the coefficients belong to a small set of integers, so that the coefficients have small wordlengths. Previously, integer programming was used to find the coefficients of such filters. However, the design method using integer programming suffers from high computational cost as the filter length increases. The computation can quickly become prohibition. In this paper, we propose two designs of predictive encoded FIR filters based on a modified Karmarkar's linear programming algorithm, which is known to be more suitable for solving large problems. First, we formulate the problem as a weighted minimax error problem and arrange it in a form that the modified Karmarkar algorithm can be applied. The design algorithm has the same (low) complexity as that of the weighted least-square method, but it can solve problems with some constraints, whereas the weighted least-square method cannot. However, the algorithm has a difficulty due to an ill condition caused by matrix inversion when the predictive filter order is high. To avoid this difficulty, we formulate the design as a weighted least absolute error problem. By using this second proposed algorithm, a filter with shorter coefficient wordlength can be found using a higher-order predictor filter at the expense of more computational cost. To further reduce the coefficient wordlength, the filter impulse response is separated into two sections having different ranges of coefficient values. Each section uses a different scaling factor to scale the coefficient values. With small coefficient wordlength, the filter can be realized without hardware multipliers using a low-radix signed-digit number representation. Each coefficient is distributed in space as 2-3 ternary {0,1} or quinary {0,1, 2} coefficients. Ternary coefficients require only add/subtract operation, while quinary coefficients require one-bit shift and add/subtract operations. The shift can be hardwired without any additional hardware.

    Since the impact of the recent rapid penetration of Information Technologies into the society is so tremendous, it is said that IT revolution is coming. Recognizing the above new waves, the Japanese Government is now promoting e-Government programs, and most enterprises are going to depend on the Internet to do their various activities. However, computer criminals, and other threats to security are increasing and becoming serious. Therefore, 'security' is the key for the Internet to be infrastructure of the future society in a true sense. There are many products for security controls, which are not necessarily compatible or interoperable. Interoperability is the basic requirement for infrastructures. In April, 2000, JNSA was organized by about a hundred IT companies. On the other hand, in October, 2000, LINCS was set up in Kogakuin University. The two organizations set up a Consortium to make experimental studies on IPSec interoperability. This is the first report of the activities and intermediate (the first) results obtained.

    For several years, more and more people are joining the Internet and various kind of packets (so called transaction-, block-, and stream-types) have been transmitted in the same network, so that poor network conditions cause loss of the stream-type data packets, such as voices, which request smaller transmission delay time than others. We consider a switching node (router) in a network as an N-series M/G/1-type queueing model and have mainly evaluated the fluctuation of packet delay time and end-to-end delay time, using the two moments matching method with initial value, then define the delay jitter D of a network which consists of jointed N switching nodes. It is clarified that this network is not suitable for voice packets transmission media without measures.

  • A Scheme of Secret Communication Using Internet Control Message Protocol

    We describe a scheme of secret communication over the Internet utilizing the potentiality of the TCP/IP protocol suite in a non-standard way. Except for the sender and the receiver of the secret communication it does not need any entities installed with special software. Moreover it does not require them to share any key beforehand. Such features of the scheme stem from the use of IP datagrams with spoofed source addresses and their related error messages for the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) induced by artificial faults. Countermeasures against IP spoofing are deployed in various places since it is often used together with attacks such as distributed denial of service (DDoS) and SPAM mailing. Thus we examine the environment where the scheme works as an intention and also clarify the conditions to obsolete the scheme. Furthermore we estimate the amount of secretly communicated data by the scheme and storage requirements for the receivers and those for the observers who monitor the traffic to detect the very existence of such a secret communication. We also discuss various issues including the sender anonymity achieved by the scheme.

  • New Signature Schemes Based on 3rd Order Shift Registers

    In this paper, we propose a new digital signature scheme based on a third order linear feedback shift register for signing documents. This signature scheme is different from most of the signature schemes that are based on discrete logarithm problem, elliptic curves discrete logarithm problem, RSA or quadratic residues. An efficient algorithm for computing kth term of a sequence is also presented. The advantage of this scheme is that the computation is efficient than Schnorr scheme. We also show that the security of the proposed signature scheme is equivalent to that of Schnorr signature scheme.

    We proposed an improved Hierarchical Packet Fair Queueing (H-PFQ) mechanism, using ACK Spacing, for efficient bandwidth management of TCP traffic over Internet. According to the pre-determined bandwidth sharing and the class hierarchy of all TCP sessions, we design an algorithm to calculate the required time intervals between consecutive ACK packets of each TCP session to avoid packet drops due to buffer overflow. We demonstrated via computer simulations that the proposed improvement techniques may result in much better performance than merely original H-PFQ mechanism used in the forward direction in the sense that not only effective throughput of the bottleneck link is improved but also the fairness among TCP sessions can be maintained.

  • Teletraffic Characteristics of Mobile Packet Communication Networks Considering Self-Similarity in Terminal Cell Dwell Time

    Teletraffic characteristics of a mobile packet communication network, which supports mobile Internet, were quantitatively evaluated by using a terminal migration model in which the cell dwell time possesses self-similarity. I used a migration model in which the migration speed of the terminal is determined by the density of the dwell terminals in a cell (determined from measured vehicular mobility characteristics). The transmission rates per terminal in a cell were estimated as teletraffic on the mobile packet communication networks using this migration model. I found that when there is self-similarity in the terminal cell dwell time, communicating terminals may be concentrated in the cell and restricted for an indefinite period of time to using only a narrow bandwidth.

    A novel sensor system of denture base type was developed for simultaneous monitoring of salivary pH and tissue temperature in the oral cavity. Fundamental components of the monitoring system, sensor devices and sensor configuration are showed in this paper. The sensor units consist of IrO2 electrode and thermistor circuit implanted in the denture base that is tightly fixed in the oral cavity. The signals are transmitted by PFM-FM telemeter system that can be used for health care of the aged people without restraint of their daily behavior while at work, sleeping and even at exercise. Some of results concerning the basic characteristics of the sensor system and continuously monitored physiological data were obtained from the preliminary experiments. Availability of the whole system and monitoring method was discussed.

    This paper describes the recent progress made in developing wavelength tunable semiconductor light sources for WDM applications. Wide and quasi-continuous wavelength tunings were investigated for a wavelength-selectable laser and a wavelength tunable distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser having a super structure grating (SSG). A wavelength-selectable laser consisting of a DFB laser array, a multi-mode interferometer (MMI), and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) demonstrated a quasi-continuous tuning range of 46.9 nm by using temperature control. A wavelength-tunable DBR laser with SSG exhibited a quasi-continuous tuning range of 62.4 nm by using three tuning current controls. Wavelength stabilization was also demonstrated under the temperature variations of 5.

  • The Methods and the Feasibility of Frame Grouping in Internet Telephony

    Grouping multiple voice frames into a single IP packet ("frame grouping") is a commonly mentioned approach to saving bandwidth in IP telephony. But little is known as to when, how, and how much frame grouping should be done in Internet environment. This paper explores the feasibility and the methods of frame grouping based on Internet delay measurement. Specifically, we propose an adaptive frame grouping method that minimizes the delay violation while reducing the bandwidth usage by as much as a factor of two under real Internet delay fluctuations. The performance of the method is evaluated as it is used against a single voice stream and then against multiple voice streams.

    In this paper, we present several unitary transform-domain filtering techniques based on Karhaunen-Loeve Transform (KLT) for narrow-band interference rejection in CDMA communication systems. The reason for selecting the KLT is that it is an optimum unitary transform in the sense of packing the energy of the narrow-band interference. As a result after applying this transform, a small portion of the transformed signal would be interfered by the narrow-band interference, and thus must be set to zero. Due to unavailability of the optimum transform (KLT), several sub-optimum transforms are presented and their performances are compared with the well-known conventional transform methods such as Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) in the presence of both Auto Regressive (AR) and sinusoidal narrow-band interference. Our simulation results show that the proposed transform methods significantly outperform the conventional methods.

  • On Finding Feasible Solutions for the Group Multicast Routing Problem

    In this paper we addresses the problem of finding feasible solutions for the Group Multicast Routing Problem (GMRP). This problem is a generalization of the multicast routing problem whereby every member of the group is allowed to multicast messages to other members from the same group. The routing problem involves the construction of a set of low cost multicast trees with bandwidth requirements for all the group members in the network. We first prove that the problem of finding feasible solutions to GMRP is NP-complete. Following that we propose a new heuristic algorithm for constructing feasible solutions for GMRP. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm is able to achieve good performance in terms of its ability of finding feasible solutions whenever one exist.

  • Heterogeneous Video Multicast in an Active Network

    We present a simple framework for multicasting video in an active network, in which we overcome heterogeneity in the quality requests by filtering the video stream at some properly located active nodes. The framework includes the requirements for the underlying active network and outlines the video multicast application. We then introduce a heuristic algorithm for electing the filtering nodes to conform a multicast distribution tree, in which we use an objective function to, for example, minimize the required bandwidth. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm comparing it with simulcast and layered encoded transmission through simulation experiments, showing some advantages of using active filtering.

    A tunable external-cavity InGaAs/AlGaAs quantum-well laser using a grating coupler monolithically integrated in a selectively disordered waveguide is demonstrated. The laser consists of an amplifier with a narrow channel for lateral single-mode guiding and a tapered section, a grating coupler for output beam collimation and wavelength dispersion, and an external half mirror. Selective quantum-well disordering technique using SiO2 caps of different thicknesses and rapid thermal annealing was employed to reduce the passive waveguide loss in the grating coupler region. Loss reduction from 40 cm-1 to 3 cm-1 was accomplished. Resultant increase of the grating coupler efficiency and expansion of the effective aperture length led to significant improvement of the laser performances. The maximum output power of 105 mW and wide tuning range of 21.1 nm centered at 997 nm were obtained. The well collimated output beam of full diffraction angles at half maximum of 0.16 0.18 was obtained.

    Spatial dynamic pattern formations or trails by organisms attract us, which remind us chaos and fractal. They seem to show the emergence of co-operation, job separation, or division of territories when genetic programming controls the reproduction, mutation, crossing over of the organisms. Recent research in social insect behavior suggests that swarm intelligence comes from pheromone or chemical trails, and models based on self-organization can help explain how colony-level behavior emerges out of interactions among individual insects. We try to explain the co-operative behaviors of social insect by means of density of organisms and their interaction with environment in simple simulations. We also study that MDL-based fitness evaluation is effective for improvement of generalization of genetic programming. At last, interspecific and intraspecific mathematical models are examined to expand our research into interspecific evolution.

    We have demonstrated active mode hopping suppression in external-cavity semiconductor lasers including a diffraction grating as a wavelength-selecting device. The feedback control nullifies the difference between the oscillation wavelength and selected wavelength based on observed changes in diffraction angle. The control has suppressed mode hopping over a 7.5 times wider span than without control. And when combined with conventional mode hopping suppression techniques, mode-hop-free oscillation is achieved over 130 nm. Our approach can be used for most Littman-type external-cavity semiconductor lasers with simple attachments; it will be useful for continuous wavelength sweeping and for long-term wavelength stabilization.
