The key concept of Physical Optics (PO), originally developed for a perfectly electric conductor (PEC), consists in that the high frequency fields on the scatterer surface are approximated by those which would exist on the infinite flat surface tangent to the scatterer. The scattered fields at arbitrary observation points are then calculated by integrating these fields on the scatterer. This general concept can be extended to arbitrary impedance surfaces. The asymptotic evaluation of this surface integration in terms of diffraction coefficients gives us the fields in analytical forms. In this paper, uniform PO diffraction coefficients for the impedance surfaces are presented and their high accuracy is verified numerically. These coefficients are providing us with the tool for the mechanism extraction of various high frequency methods such as aperture field integration method and Kirchhoff's method.

This paper discusses the features of SOI/CMOS circuits in comparison with bulk/CMOS circuits. We have to design circuits with small fan outs and short wires to take advantage of high-speed and low-power SOI/CMOS devices to their fullest. We can take advantage of the SOI/CMOS structure if the ratio of the source/drain capacitances to the gate capacitances is much greater in the load capacitance. Thus, we propose a new flip-flop circuit with a smaller gate capacitance. The flip-flop circuit operates 30% faster than the previous circuit at 2.0 V. We also propose a buffer circuit having less delay disparity between the complementary output signals. The buffer circuit has the delay disparity of 18 ps at 0.2 pF and 2.0 V. We fabricated an 8-bit frequency divider and a 4-bit demultiplexer using the proposed circuits and 0.35 µm SOI/CMOS process. The 8-bit frequency divider and the 4-bit demultiplexer operate at 2.8 GHz and 1.6 GHz, respectively, at 2.0 V.

In this study, we show how changing a frequency in one of N chaotic circuits coupled by a resistor effects our system by means of both circuit experiment and computer calculation. In these N chaotic circuits, N-1 circuits are completely identical, and the remaining one has altered the value of the oscillation frequency. It is found that for the case of N = 3 when a value of a coupling resistor is gradually increased, only one circuit with different frequency exhibits bifurcation phenomena including inverse period-doubling bifurcation, and for larger value of coupling resistor, the chaotic circuit with different frequency suddenly stops oscillating and the remaining two chaotic circuits exhibit completely anti-phase synchronization.

The computers are connected with each other by the network as a result of the progress of technology in the field of the computer and network, and then all of the data to be processed are transferred quickly and at the real-time through the computer network. However the user can use the computer system at any time, the user must go to the location of the computer system to use the computer resources. The necessities for using the computer system occur anywhere and anytime in spite of the location of the computer system. For this requirement the mobile computing environment (MCE) is expected strongly. In this paper we introduce the model of MCE and discuss the need of the user authentication at entering and logging-in the network in MCE only with a user ID. We propose the method of a user ID assignment from which a server ID can be decided by a simple logical operation. Also, we propose a protocol for a user authentication in MCE and discuss the robustness of security against the various attacking on the route.

Applying ARQ to real time video communication can significantly increase transmission delay due its retransmission operations. We analyze this delay and propose an adaptive error control scheme that uses acknowledgment from the receiver to reduce the delay. We evaluate this scheme using a computer simulation and show that the proposed scheme can reduce the delay by controlling the amount of video data by changing the quantization step size and video frame skipping. It also offers acceptable video quality as confirmed by a subjective evaluation test.

This paper proposes the use, in integrated wireless systems, of the Reserved Idle Signal Multiple Access with Collision Resolution (R-ISMA/CR) protocol for applications in future multimedia mobile communications. It is applied to the integrated voice and data wireless system. Moreover, the consideration is made of the integrated voice and the low-bit video wireless system in R-ISMA/CR. To integrate video we employed not only a packed discard for video packets when the video packet delay is more than a threshold value, but also the connection packet (CP) technique for improving the channel utilization. Finally the integration of voice, data, and low-bit-video wireless system in R-ISMA/CR is considered. The performance are evaluated mainly by simulations.

In this paper, we propose a quasi-optimum multiuser detector using co-channel interference cancellation technique in an asynchronous code-division multiple-access communication system, and evaluate its performance by computer simulations. In the proposed detector, maximum likelihood sequence estimation is performed to compare the original received signal with replicas of the signal which are produced from the demodulation data bit sequence of a co-channel interference canceller. In several conditions, the proposed detector is compared with the co-channel interference canceller, and it is shown that the average bit error rate characteristics of the propose detector are improved considerably.

We propose a soft decision Viterbi decoding scheme and a self-interference cancellation method applicable to a Parallel Combinatory CDMA (PC-CDMA) system. In this decoding scheme, branch metric is calculated for every bit by weighting the output levels of the PC-CDMA correlators so as to enable an effective soft decision capability to the system. The effectivity of this scheme is then further enhanced by the use of a simple pseudo-random bit interleaving scheme. Moreover, to increase the capacity of the PC-CDMA system, we propose a simple self-interference cancellation method for self-induced cross-correlation arising from the multipath environment. This further enhances the efficacy of the decoding scheme because the false contributions of the self-induced cross-correlation component are removed from the branch metric prior to soft decision Viterbi decoding. Finally, we simulated a possible PC-CDMA system with a user data rate of 1.92Mbps, transmitting it at a chip rate of 3.84Mcps and at 7.68Mcps under a multipath-Rayleigh fading interference environment. For a chip rate of 7.68Mcps, BER after Viterbi decoding is less than 3.2e-7 even without the use of interference cancellation. For a chip rate of 3.84Mcps, BER after Viterbi decoding with interference cancellation is 1.0e-4.
This study was conducted to assess the relationship between fatigue and pupillary responses. Pupillary responses, ECG and blood pressure were measured for 24 hours every 30 min in 8 subjects. A questionnaire was used to rate subjective feeling of fatigue. Twenty-four hours were divided equally into four 6-hour blocks. Subjective feeling of fatigue increased markedly in the fourth block, and the difference in subjective fatigue between fourth and first blocks was significant. Of nine pupillary responses, the pupil diameter was found to decrease with time. With respect to the function of the autonomic nervous system such as heart rate, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure, only heart rate was found to be sensitive to the increased subjective feeling of fatigue. A significant difference was found in the mean pupil diameter and mean heart rate between the last and first blocks. This result indicates that pupil diameter is related to fatigue and can be used to assess fatigue. Possible implications for fatigue assessment are discussed.

This paper explores the potential of multiwave interconnectionsoptical interconnections that employ wavelength components as multiplexable information carriersfor constructing next-generation multiprocessor systems using MCM technology. A hypercube-based multiprocessor network called the multiwave hypercube (MWHC) is proposed, where multiwave interconnections provide highly-flexible dynamic communication channels among processing elements. A performance analysis shows that the use of multiwavelength optics makes possible the reduction of network complexity on an MCM substrate, while supporting low-latency message routing.

This paper presents a new offset-quadrature-phase-shift-keying (OQPSK) coherent demodulation scheme for wireless asynchronous transfer mode (WATM) systems that premise the Ricean fading communication channels (e.g., typically with derectional antennas). The presented demodulator is basically advanced from a simultaneous carrier and bit-timing recovery (SCBR) scheme by newly employing a phase compensated filter and a reverse-modulation scheme for OQPSK. This advancement aims to enhance the carrier phase tracking performance against the phase fluctuation due to the fading and/or the phase rotation caused by the carrier frequency error of the oscillator. Design consideration and performance evaluation of the demodulator are extensively carried out under Ricean fading channels typical of the WATM systems as well as additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. The evaluation ressults show that the advanced SCBR (ASCBR) scheme achieves a bit-error-rate/cell-error-rate (BER/CER) performance close to ideal coherent detection with a considerably short preamble, e.g., 8 symbols. Specifically, compared with differential detection (evaluated for QPSK with the hard-wired clock), the new coherent demodulator achieves a significant required Eb/No improvement, which becomes larger as the fading condition degrades. This paper concludes that the ASCBR scheme is a strong candidate for the Ricean-fading-premise WATM systems.
In client-server database management systems (DBMSs), inter-transaction caching is an effective technique for improving the performance. However, inter-transaction caching requires a cache consistency maintenance (CCM) protocol to ensure that cached copies at clients are kept mutually consistent. Such a protocol could be complex to implement and expensive to run, since several rounds of message exchange may be required. In this paper, we propose a new CCM scheme based on the primary-copy locking algorithm. In the proposed scheme, a number of lock requests and a data-shipping request are combined into a single message packet to reduce client-server interactions, which are known to be very critical to the performance of clientserver DBMSs. We examine its performance tradeoffs on the basis of a simulation model under a wide range of workloads. The performance results indicate that the proposed scheme improves the overall system throughput significantly over the caching two-phase locking and the optimistic two-phase locking scheme. Its higher performance mainly results from its lower communication overhead and lower degree of transaction blocking ratio.
A moment-based method is proposed to estimate the illumination change between two images containing affinetransformed objects. The change is linearly modeled with parameters to be estimated by histograms due to its invariance of translation, rotation, and scaling. The parameters can be correctly estimated for an appropriate illumination change by normalizing the moments of the histograms.

This paper describes influence of the relaxation current in BaxSr(1-x)TiO3 (BST) thin films on dynamic random access memory (DRAM) operation. The relaxation current is a transient content of dielectric leakage currents. In BST thin films (expected to be a cell capacitor dielectric in 256 Mb DRAM and beyond), the relaxation current often displays the power law behavior I(t)t-1. This leads to the singularity near the time zero. When one attempts to evaluate precisely the influence of this leakage on DRAM operation, the behavior should be estimated on a time-dependent bias. However, such a singular behavior makes analysis based on a linear response difficult. In this analysis, we start by assuming that the behavior of the relaxation current can be modeled as a linear equivalent circuit. We also assume that the relaxation current follows the power law, I(t)t-1 for 1 ns

This paper describes research on a cost-effective regional Personal-Computer (PC) communication network system based on Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) systems and examines its realization. A small scale prototype experimental system was developed and tested in a home-use trial. This paper specifically discusses a sophisticated system architecture with a newly developed miutiplex-port brouter (bridging router) based on the experimental system. The system provides a LAN environment and group communication services to the customers. The Low-end Card (LEC), which provides the popular Ethernet interface (10Base-T), is set up in the subscriber household. The leased circuits are connected between the LEC and the brouter. The LEC and the brouter are controlled by the management server to function as a group communication system. The brouter, which has a multiplex subscriber-port interface, must accommodate many customers in a cost effective manner. This paper presents the system design of a multiplex-port brouter with an SDH/SONET interface. Two types of interface cards at 150 Mbit/s and 50 Mbit/s are prepared making the system scalable. The brouter can accommodate up to 2,700 subscribers. The subscriber channel rate can be set from 64 Kbit/s to 1.5 Mbit/s. Ethernet packets from the PCs are transferred through each subscriber channel between the LEC and the brouter using the High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) protocol.

Genetic algorithms were introduced by Holland in 1975 as a method of solving difficult optimization problems by means of simulated evolution. A major drawback of genetic algorithms is their slowness when emulated by software on conventional computers. Described is an adaptation of the original genetic algorithm that is advantageous to hardware implementation along with the architecture of a hardware framework that performs the functions of population storage, selection, crossover, mutation, fitness evaluation, and survival determination. Programming of the framework is illustrated with the set coverage problem that exhibits a 6,000 speed-up over software emulation on a 100 MHz workstation.

This paper investigates the error rate performance of parallel combinatorial spread spectrum (PC/SS) communicaion systems that use coherent and differential multiphase modulation: multiphase parallel combinatorial spread spectrum (MPC/SS) communication systems. The PC/SS systems are multicode SS systems based on orthogonal pseudo-noise (PN) sequences. Data is transmitted by delivering a combination of multiple PN sequences among a set of pre-assigned PN sequences. In the MPC/SS systems, every PN sequence on transmission is modulated by q-ary coherent or differential phase shift keying (PSK). Symbol error rate (SER) and average bit error rate (BER) in coherent and differential MPC/SS systems are investigated. The BER comparison between the MPC/SS systems and simple multicode SS systems with q-ary coherent and differential PSK is also presented. Numerical results show that the MPC/SS systems are superior to the conventional q-ary PSK systems, if they have equal spectral efficiency.

In this paper, we propose a method to construct structure models of articulated objects from multiple local observations of their motion using state transition analysis of local geometric constraints. The object model is constructed by a bottom-up approach with three levels. Each level groups sensor data with a constraint among local features observed by the sensor, and constructs the local model. If the sensor data in current model conflict, the model is reconstructed. In each level, the first level estimates a local geometric feature from the local sensor data (eg. edge, feature point) The second level estimates a rigid body from the local geometric feature. The third level estimates an object from the rigid bodies. In the third level, the constraint between rigid bodies is estimated by transition states, which are motions between rigid bodies. This approach is implemented on a blackboard system.

A new configuration of high gain circularly polarized microstrip antenna with a diagonal short and its analysis using boundary element method with a radiation load are presented. The center of a radiating patch is shorted with a 45-degree diagonal offset for not only obtaining a high gain but exciting a circular polarization. This configuration leads to achieving high gain with keeping a very low profile configuration. Boundary element method with radiation load which takes into account the effect of radiation loss is employed to analyze this complicated configuration. The radiation load, which is very important when boundary element method is applied to antenna analyses, can be obtained from radiation admittance using recurring technique, so that the accuracy of the antenna characteristic calculations can be improved. This antenna was designed and tested in the L-band and good characteristics, axial ratios and radiation patterns, have been verified.

A piezoelectric transformer (PT) converter with PWM control is presented. The combination of an active-clamp circuit and a resonant circuit makes it possible to control the output voltage of the PT converter with PWM at a constant switching frequency. The PT converter circuit is evaluated using an AC analysis, and a design procedure is presented. The PT converter implemented on a printed circuit board is experimentally evaluated and a good controllability is successfully achieved.
