This work presents an FSK inductive-coupling transceiver using a load-modulated transmitter and LC-oscillator-based receiver for energy-budget-unbalanced applications. By introducing the time-domain load modulated transmitter for FSK instead of the conventional current-driven scheme, energy reduction of the transmitter side is possible. For verifying the proposed scheme, a test chip was fabricated in 65nm CMOS, and two chips were stacked for verifying the inter-chip communication. The measurement results show 0.64fJ/bit transmitter power consumption while its input voltage is 60mV, and the communication distance is 150μm. The footprint of the transmitter is 0.0016mm2.

To address the bandwidth bottleneck that exists between LSI chips, we have proposed a novel, high-sensitivity receiver circuit for differential optical transmission on a silicon optical interposer. Both anodes and cathodes of the differential photodiodes (PDs) were designed to be connected to a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) through coupling capacitors. Reverse bias voltage was applied to each of the differential PDs through load resistance. The proposed receiver circuit achieved double the current signal amplitude of conventional differential receiver circuits. The frequency response of the receiver circuit was analyzed using its equivalent circuit, wherein the temperature dependence of the PD was implemented. The optimal load resistances of the PDs were determined to be 5kΩ by considering the tradeoff between the frequency response and bias voltage drop. A small dark current of the PD was important to reduce the voltage drop, but the bandwidth degradation was negligible if the dark current at room temperature was below 1µA. The proposed circuit achieved 3-dB bandwidths of 18.9 GHz at 25°C and 13.7 GHz at 85°C. Clear eye openings in the TIA output waveforms for 25-Gbps 27-1 pseudorandom binary sequence signals were obtained at both temperatures.

This paper presents a 6th-order quadrature bandpass delta sigma AD modulator (QBPDSM) with 2nd-order image rejection using dynamic amplifier and noise coupling (NC) SAR quantizer embedded by passive adder for the application of wireless communication system. A novel complex integrator using dynamic amplifier is proposed to improve the energy efficiency of the QBPDSM. The NC SAR quantizer can realize an additional 2nd-order noise shaping and 2nd-order image rejection by the digital domain noise coupling technique. As a result, the 6th-order QBPDSM with 2nd-order image rejection is realized by two complex integrators using dynamic amplifier and the NC SAR quantizer. The SPICE simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed QBPDSM in 90nm CMOS technology. Simulated SNDR of 76.30dB is realized while a sinusoid -3.25dBFS input is sampled at 33.3MS/s and the bandwidth of 2.083MHz (OSR=8) is achieved. The total power consumption in the modulator is 6.74mW while the supply voltage is 1.2V.

Coil-shaped structures are proposed to enhance sensitivity and spatial resolution for EMI near-field probe. This design yields a high sensitivity and a good spatial resolution to find the EMI source in near-field region. Both characteristics are crucial to diagnosis of emissions from electrical and electronic devices. The new design yields a superior sensitivity, which is in general 15 dB greater than conventional probes. This new probe helps practitioners to quickly and correctly locate noise emission source areas on printed circuit boards and devices. Two prototypes of different sizes were fabricated. The larger one provides a high sensitivity while the smaller one can pinpoint emission source locations. The new probe design also has an orientation invariance feature. Its noise response levels are similar for all probe directions. This characteristic can help reduced the probability at miss-detection since sensitivity is largely invariant to its orientation. Extensive measurements were performed to verify the operation mechanism and to assess probe characteristics. It suits well to the electromagnetic interference problem diagnosis.

Impedance mismatching is a major obstacle hindering the application of DC power line communication (DC-PLC) due to the unpredictability of access impedance and random loads. Researchers and manufacturers typically estimate the power line impedance level and use a fixed single-winding coupler to carry out signal coupling, which does not achieve accurate impedance matching and leads to large signal attenuation and low reliability. In this paper, a lumped parameter power line communication model for DC-PLC is established in which the optimal receiver winding ratio is derived from equivalent circuits. A modifiable impedance matching coupler was designed to achieve dynamic impedance matching, and a series of simulations were run to analyze the relationship among optimal winding ratio, power line impedance and series loads. The performance of different winding ratio couplers under varied frequency and load impedance was also measured in a laboratory environment to find that adopting the modifiable impedance matching coupler is indeed a useful strategy for achieving adaptive impedance matching with maximum signal power transfer.

This paper describes the equivalent-circuit model of a metamaterial composed of conducting spheres and wires. This model involves electromagnetic coupling between the conductors, with retardation. The lumped-parameter equivalent circuit, which imports retardation to the electromagnetic coupling, is developed in this paper from Maxwell's equation. Using the equivalent-circuit model, we clarify the relationship between the retardation and radiation loss; we theoretically demonstrate that the electromagnetic retardation in the near-field represents the radiation loss of the meta-atom in the far-field. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the retarded electromagnetic coupling between two meta-atoms; we estimate the changes in the resonant frequencies and the losses due to the distance between the two coupled meta-atoms. It is established that the dependence characteristics are significantly affected by electromagnetic retardation.

For more flexible and efficient use of radio spectrum, reconfigurable RF devices have important roles in the future wireless systems. In 5G mobile communications, concurrent multi-band operation using new SHF bands is considered. This paper presents a new configuration of dual-band SHF BPF consisting of a low SHF three-bit reconfigurable BPF and a high SHF BPF. The proposed dual-band BPF employs direct parallel connection without additional divider/combiner to reduce circuit elements and simplify the BPF. In order to obtain a good isolation between two passbands while achieving a wide center frequency range in the low SHF BPF, input/output impedances and external Qs of BPFs are analyzed and feedbacked to the design. A high SHF BPF design method with tapped transmission line resonators and lumped-element coupling is also presented to make the BPF compact. Two types of prototypes; all inductor-coupled dual-band BPF and C-L-C coupled dual-band BPF were designed and fabricated. Both prototypes have low SHF reconfigurable center frequency range from 3.5 to 5 GHz as well as high SHF center frequency of 8.5 GHz with insertion loss below 2.0 dB.

This paper presents the design of a capacitive coupler for underwater wireless power transfer (U-WPT) focusing on kQ product. Power transfer efficiency hinges on the coupling coefficient k between the couplers and Q-factor of water calculated from the complex permittivity. High efficiency can be achieved by handling k and the Q-factor effectively. First, the pivotal elements on k are derived from the equivalent circuit of the coupler. Next, the frequency characteristic of the Q-factor in tap water is calculated from the measured results. Then, the design parameters in which kQ product has the maximal values are determined. Finally, it is demonstrated that the efficiency of U-WPT with the capacitive coupling designed by our method achieves approximately 80%.

This paper presents a meta-structured circular polarized array antenna with wide scan angle. In order to widen the scanning angle of array antennas, this paper investigates unit antenna beamwidth and the coupling effects between array elements, both of which directly affect the steering performance. As a result, the optimal array distance, the mode configuration, and the antenna structure are elucidated. By using the features of the miniaturized mu-zero resonance (MZR) antenna, it is possible to design the antenna at optimum array distance for wide beamwidth. In addition, by modifying via position and gap configuration of the antenna, it is possible to optimize the mode configuration for optimal isolation. Finally, the 3dB steerable angle of 66° is successfully demonstrated using a 1x8 MZR CP antenna array without any additional decoupling structure. The measured beam patterns at a scan angle of 0°, 22°, 44°, and 66°agree well with the simulated beam patterns.

Using local time frames to treat non-stationary real world signals as stationary yields Quasi-Stationary Signals (QSS). In this paper, direction of arrival (DOA) estimation of uncorrelated non-circular QSS is analyzed by applying a novel technique to achieve larger consecutive lags using coprime array. A scheme of virtual extension of coprime array is proposed that exploits the difference and sum co-array which can increase consecutive co-array lags in remarkable number by using less number of sensors. In the proposed method, cross lags as well as self lags are exploited for virtual extension of co-arrays both for differences and sums. The method offers higher degrees of freedom (DOF) with a larger number of non-negative consecutive lags equal to MN+2M+1 by using only M+N-1 number of sensors where M and N are coprime with congenial interelement spacings. A larger covariance matrix can be achieved by performing covariance like computations with the Khatri-Rao (KR) subspace based approach which can operate in undetermined cases and even can deal with unknown noise covariances. This paper concentrates on only non-negative consecutive lags and subspace based method like Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) based approach has been executed for DOA estimation. Hence, the proposed method, named Virtual Extension of Coprime Array imbibing Difference and Sum (VECADS), in this work is promising to create larger covariance matrix with higher DOF for high resolution DOA estimation. The coprime distribution yielded by the proposed approach can yield higher resolution DOA estimation while avoiding the mutual coupling effect. Simulation results demonstrate its effectiveness in terms of the accuracy of DOA estimation even with tightly aligned sources using fewer sensors compared with other techniques like prototype coprime, conventional coprime, Coprime Array with Displaced Subarrays (CADiS), CADiS after Coprime Array with Compressed Inter-element Spacing (CACIS) and nested array seizing only difference co-array.

This paper presents a theoretical design of novel THz bandpass filters composed of M-PhC (metallic-photonic-crystal) point-defect-cavities (PDCs) with a centrally-loaded-rod. After a brief review of the properties of the recently-proposed M-PhC PDCs, two inline-type bandpass filters are synthesized in terms of the coupling matrix theory. The FDTD simulation results of the synthesized filters are in good agreement with the theoretical ones, which confirms the validity of the proposed filters' structures and the design scheme.

We report good responsivity at the wavelength of 1600nm in a Ge photodetector which had lateral p-i-n structure and butt-joint coupling structure based on conventional normal complementary metal oxide semiconductor processes. We experimentally verified the responsivity of 0.82A/W and 0.71A/W on the best and the worst polarizations, respectively. The butt joint lateral p-i-n structure is found to be polarization independent as compared with vertical ones. Although cut-off frequency was 2.3-2.4GHz at reverse bias 3V, clearly open eye diagram at 10Gbps was obtained with reverse bias over 12V. These results are promising as optical photodetectors to receive long wavelengths downstream signal wavelengths required for next-generation optical access network systems.

A compact uniplanar antenna design for tablet/laptop applications is proposed. The main design principle of this antenna is the use of the coupling-feed mechanism. The proposed antenna is composed of an inverted L-shaped parasitic element, T-shaped feeding strip, parasitic shorted strip, and a step tuning stub. With its small size of 55mm × 15mm × 0.8mm, the proposed antenna is able to excite dual wideband transmission over the full LTE/WWAN operation ranges of 698-960MHz and 1710-2690MHz. Furthermore, the proposed antenna also exhibits reduced ground effects, such that reducing the ground size of the proposed antenna will not affect its performance.

This paper focuses on underwater wireless power transfer with electric coupling. First, the maximum available efficiency is derived by using the S-parameters of the parallel plate coupler. The frequency which represents the maximal value of the efficiency is revealed. Further, the elevation in the efficiency in association with a reduction of the electrode size is found. It is clarified that the elevation depends on the characteristic of the water dielectric loss. From these results, the optimal electrode size that obtains the maximal value of the efficiency is provided. Finally, we fabricate the couplers by utilizing the optimal frequency and the electrode size. The efficiency of 75.8% under water is achieved.

This paper describes, for the first time, an experimental study on the layout design considerations of GaAs HBT MMIC switchable-amplifier-chain-based power amplifiers (SWPAs) for CDMA handsets. The transient response of the quiescent current and output power (Pout) in GaAs HBT power amplifiers that consist of a main chain and a sub-chain is often affected by a thermal coupling between power stages and their bias circuits in the same chain or a thermal coupling between power stages and/or their bias circuits in different chains. In particular, excessively strong thermal coupling inside the MMIC SWPA causes failure in 3GPP-compliant inner loop power control tests. An experimental study reveals that both the preheating in the main/sub-chains and appropriate thermal coupling inside the main chain are very effective in reducing the turn-on delay for the two-parallel-amplifier-chain topology; for example, i) the sub-power stage is arranged near the main power stage, ii) the sub-driver stage is placed near the main driver stage and iii) the main driver bias circuit is placed near the main power stage and the sub-power stage. The SWPA operating in Band 9 (1749.9 to 1784.9 MHz), which was designed and fabricated from the foregoing considerations, shows a remarkable improvement in the Pout turn-on delay: a reduced power level error of 0.74 dB from turn-off to turn-on in the sub-amplifier chain and a reduced power level error of over 0.30 dB from turn-off to turn-on in the main amplifier chain. The main RF power measurements conducted with a 3.4-V supply voltage and a Band 9 WCDMA HSDPA modulated signal are as follows. The SWPA delivers a Pout of 28.5 dBm, a power gain (Gp) of 28 dB, and a PAE of 39% while restricting the ACLR1 to less than -40 dBc in the main amplifier chain. In the sub-amplifier chain, 17 dBm of Pout, 23.5 dB of Gp, and 27% of PAE are obtained at the same ACLR1 level.

Antenna-coupled kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) have recently shown great promise as microwave detection systems with a large number of channels. However, this technique, still has difficulties in eliminating the radiation loss of the resonator signals. To solve this problem, we propose a design in which the absorption area connected to an antenna is located on the ground-side of a coplanar waveguide. Thereby, radiation loss due to leakage from the resonator to the antenna can be considerably reduced. This simple design also enables the use of a contact aligner for fabrication. We have developed KIDs with this design, named as the ground-side absorption (GSA)-KIDs and demonstrated that they have higher quality factors than those of the existing KIDs, while maintaining a good total sensitivity.

The increase of recent non-recurrent engineering cost (design, mask and test cost) have made large System-on-Chip (SoC) difficult to develop especially with advanced technology. We radically explore an approach for cheap and flexible chip stacking by using Inductive coupling ThruChip Interface (TCI). In order to connect a large number of small chips for building a large scale system, novel chip stacking methods called the linear stacking and staggered stacking are proposed. They enable the system to be extended to x or/and y dimensions, not only to z dimension. Here, a novel chip staking layout, and its deadlock-free routing design for the case using single-core chips and multi-core chips are shown. The network with 256 nodes formed by the proposed stacking improves the latency of 2D mesh by 13.8% and the performance of NAS Parallel Benchmarks by 5.4% on average compared to that of 2D mesh.
