In this letter, an NB RCP LDPC (Non-Binary Rate-Compatible-Punctured Low Density Parity Check) code has been designed over the extended Galois Field. The designed code enables us to change the code rate easily by properly puncturing the appropriate symbols from the LDPC mother code. The designed NB RCP LDPC code has been applied to the Type II HARQ (Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest) scheme using OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) modulation. The throughput characteristics of the proposed HARQ scheme are evaluated through computation simulation.

Processing structures required in sensing are designed to convert real-world information into useful information, and there are various restrictions and performance goals depending on physical restrictions and the target applications. On the other hand, network technologies are mainly designed for data exchange in the information world, as is seen in packet communications, and do not go well with sensing structures from the viewpoints of real-time properties, spatial continuity, etc. This indicates the need for understanding the architectures and restrictions of sensor technologies and network technologies when aiming to fuse these technologies. This paper clarifies the differences between these processing structures, proposes some issues to be addressed in order to achieve real fusion of them, and presents future directions toward real fusion of sensor technologies and network technologies.

This paper presents a method of expanding the operating frequency band of a Reverberating TEM Cell (RTC) for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing. To expand the operating frequency band of an RTC, this paper places a wire septum inside the cell instead of a solid septum. The maximum usable frequency (MUF) for TEM cell operation and the lowest usable frequency (LUF) for reverberating chamber operation with the wire septum are studied and compared with a conventional solid septum. The E field strengths inside the RTC are measured and evaluated. The measurement results show that the RTC with the wire septum have similar MUF to the RTC with a solid septum at TEM mode, but have much lower LUF at a reverberating mode, which proves that the operating frequency band of the RTC can be expanded by using the wire septum.

In this work, a high performance LDPC decoder architecture is presented. It is a partially-parallel architecture for low-complexity consideration. In order to eliminate the idling time and hardware complexity in conventional partially-parallel decoders, the decoding process, decoder architecture and memory structure are optimized. Particularly, the parity-check matrix is optimally partitioned into four unequal sub-matrices that lead to high efficiency in hardware sharing. As a result, it can handle two different codewords simultaneously with 100% hardware utilization. Furthermore, for minimizing the performance loss due to round-off errors in fixed-point implementations, the well-known modified min-sum decoding algorithm is enhanced by our recently proposed high-performance CMVP decoding algorithm. Overall, the proposed decoder has high throughput, low complexity, and good BER performances. In the circuit implementation example of the (576,288) parity check matrix for IEEE 802.16e standard, the decoder achieves a data rate of 5.5 Gbps assuming 10 decoding iterations and 7 quantization bits, with a small area of 653 K gates, based on UMC 90 nm process technology.

As described in this paper, construction and blind estimation methods of phase sequences are proposed for subcarrier-phase control based peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction in low-density parity-check (LDPC)-coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. On the transmitter side, phase sequence patterns are constructed based on a given parity-check matrix. The PAPR of the OFDM signal is reduced by multiplying the constructed phase sequence selected from the same number of candidates as the number of weighting factor (WF) combinations in a partial transmit sequence (PTS) method. On the receiver side, the phase sequence is estimated blindly using the decoding function, i.e., the most likely phase sequence among a limited number of possible phase sequence candidates is inferred by comparing the sum-product calculation results of each candidate. Computer simulation results show that PAPR of QPSK-OFDM and 16QAM-OFDM signals can be reduced respectively by about 3.7 dB and 4.0 dB without marked degradation of the block error rate (BLER) performance as compared to perfect estimation in an attenuated 12-path Rayleigh fading condition.

In this paper, we investigate two receiver structures for spatially multiplexed transmission on MIMO frequency selective fading channels. Those receivers compensate the IAI (Inter-Antenna Interference) and ISI (Inter-Symbol Interference) in the time domain. We first propose the MIMO sequential equalizer in which the block of several receives symbols is processed symbol by symbol by MLD (Maximum Likelihood Detection). Next we investigate the MIMO MLSE (Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation) receiver in which the terminated block trellis is decoded by the Viterbi algorithm. The bit error rates of two time domain receivers are examined through computer simulations and we also compare their BER characteristics to those of the conventional MIMO SC-FDE.

A novel self-synchronizable decoding algorithm for transmissions with redundant information is proposed. We assume that desynchronization occurs because a continuous deletion of bits in the channel. The decoder bases its decision on a metric which involves the syndrome and the Hamming distance between certain codeword and its corresponding updated codeword after one iteration of sum-product decoding. The foundation of the previous assumption relies on what we called "CP-distance." The larger the CP-distance of a code the better the synchronization characteristics. Moreover, our proposal is not restricted to cyclically permutable (CP) codes as previous proposals. Theoretical foundation and experimental results show good performance of our algorithm.

The purpose of this study is to establish a whole-body averaged specific absorption rate (WB-SAR) estimation method using the power absorbed by humans; a cylindrical-external field scanning technique is used to measure the radiated RF (radio-frequency) power. This technique is adopted with the goal of simplifying the estimation of the exposure dosimetry of humans who have different postures and/or sizes. In this paper, to validate the proposed measurement method, we subject numerical human phantom models and cylindrical scanning conditions to FDTD analysis. We design a radiation system that uses a dielectric lens to achieve plane-wave irradiation of tested human phantoms in order to develop an experimental WB-SAR measurement system for UHF far-field exposure condition. In addition, we use a constructed SAR measurement system to confirm absorbed power estimations of simple geometrical phantoms and so estimate measurement error of the measurement system. Finally, we discuss the measurement results of WB-SARs for male adult and child human phantom models.

This paper describes the design methodology of a low dropout regulator (LDO). It was used to develop a power management sub-system IC for CDMA handsets which is also described in this paper. This IC contains 11 LDOs, bandgap reference, battery charger, control logic and some other peripheral circuits. For CDMA applications, very small ground current in the order of µA in standby mode is required for LDOs. An LDO architecture to meet this requirement and achieve stable operation over the process variation was developed. The on-chip logic efficiently controls all LDOs and battery charger to reduce the power dissipation as much as possible. This mixed signal subsystem has been implemented in the in-house 0.6-µm BCDMOS process. The very low LDO ground current down to 3 µA has been achieved with stable operation.

Opto-Thermal analysis of Semiconductor Blue-Multi-Laser-Diode Annealing (BLDA) for amorphous Si (a-Si) film is conducted by varying the irradiation power, the scanning velocity and the beam shape of blue-laser of 445 nm. Thermal profiles, maximum temperature of the a-Si film and the melting duration are evaluated. By comparing the simulated results with the experimental results, the excellent controllability of BLDA for arbitrary grain size can be explained consistently by the relation between irradiation time and melting duration. The results are useful to estimate poly-crystallized phase such as micro-polycrystalline Si, polycrystalline Si and anisotropic lateral growth of single-crystal-like Si.

Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) are a class of emerging networks that experience frequent and long-duration partitions. Delay is inevitable in DTNs, so ensuring the validity and reliability of the message transmission and making better use of buffer space are more important than concentrating on how to decrease the delay. In this paper, we present a novel routing protocol named Location and Direction Aware Priority Routing (LDPR) for DTNs, which utilizes the location and moving direction of nodes to deliver a message from source to destination. A node can get its location and moving direction information by receiving beacon packets periodically from anchor nodes and referring to received signal strength indicator (RSSI) for the beacon. LDPR contains two schemes named transmission scheme and drop scheme, which take advantage of the nodes' information of the location and moving direction to transmit the message and store the message into buffer space, respectively. Each message, in addition, is branded a certain priority according to the message's attributes (e.g. importance, validity, security and so on). The message priority decides the transmission order when delivering the message and the dropping sequence when the buffer is full. Simulation results show that the proposed LDPR protocol outperforms epidemic routing (EPI) protocol, prioritized epidemic routing (PREP) protocol, and DTN hierarchical routing (DHR) protocol in terms of packet delivery ratio, normalized routing overhead and average end-to-end delay. It is worth noting that LDPR doesn't need infinite buffer size to ensure the packet delivery ratio as in EPI. In particular, even though the buffer size is only 50, the packet delivery ratio of LDPR can still reach 93.9%, which can satisfy general communication demand. We expect LDPR to be of greater value than other existing solutions in highly disconnected and mobile networks.

We address the problem of perceived age estimation from face images, and propose a new semi-supervised approach involving two novel aspects. The first novelty is an efficient active learning strategy for reducing the cost of labeling face samples. Given a large number of unlabeled face samples, we reveal the cluster structure of the data and propose to label cluster-representative samples for covering as many clusters as possible. This simple sampling strategy allows us to boost the performance of a manifold-based semi-supervised learning method only with a relatively small number of labeled samples. The second contribution is to take the heterogeneous characteristics of human age perception into account. It is rare to misjudge the age of a 5-year-old child as 15 years old, but the age of a 35-year-old person is often misjudged as 45 years old. Thus, magnitude of the error is different depending on subjects' age. We carried out a large-scale questionnaire survey for quantifying human age perception characteristics, and propose to utilize the quantified characteristics in the framework of weighted regression. Consequently, our proposed method is expressed in the form of weighted least-squares with a manifold regularizer, which is scalable to massive datasets. Through real-world age estimation experiments, we demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method.

This letter presents results showing improved field uniformity in a reverberation chamber using quadratic residue diffusers. The optimal occupying ratio of the diffusers on one side wall of the chamber is presented. A reverberation chamber is an alternative to the semi-anechoic chamber, which is widely used for the analysis and measurement of electromagnetic interference and immunity. To analyze the field characteristics, quadratic residue diffusers were designed for the 1-3 GHz frequency band, and the FDTD method was used. At 1-3 GHz, the standard deviation of the test volume in the reverberation chamber was investigated. The reverberation chamber had good field uniformity when quadratic residue diffusers occupy 37.5-50% of one side wall of the reverberation chamber; the field uniformity saturated at the diffuser occupancy rate of 75%.

Threshold testing, which is an LSI testing method based on the acceptability of faults, is effective in yield enhancement of LSIs and selective hardening for LSI systems. In this paper, we propose test generation models for threshold test generation. Using the proposed models, we can efficiently identify acceptable faults and generate test patterns for unacceptable faults with a general test generation algorithm, i.e., without a test generation algorithm specialized for threshold testing. Experimental results show that our approach is, in practice, effective.

We have developed a macro model, which allows us to describe precise LDMOS DC/AC characteristics. Characterization of anomalous gate input capacitance is the key issue in the LDMOS model development. We have newly employed a T-type distributed RC scheme for gate overlapped LDMOS drift region. The bias dependent resistance and capacitance are modeled independently in Verilog-A as R-model and PMOS-capacitance. The dividing factor of the distributed R is introduced to reflect the shield effect of the gate overlap capacitance. Comparison between the new model and measurement results has proven that the developed macro model reproduces accurately not only the gate input capacitance, but also DC characteristics.

The phenomena of retrograde motion of arc in the atmosphere under transverse magnetic field were studied. AgSnO2 contacts were set in DC resistive and inductive circuits, respectively. The break voltage was 28 V, the current ranged from 1 to 5 A, and the magnetic flux density changed from 0 to 100 mT. A high speed camera and an oscilloscope were used to record time variations of arc images, voltages and currents, simultaneously. Different from previous experiment results, the arc motion showed three stages which was more obvious under larger magnetic flux density in inductive circuit. It was also found that the arc movement was closely related with the arc voltage. Explanation to the retrograde motion under such conditions was given.

We present a new paging algorithm for wireless networks with ultra-short-range radio access links (picocells). The ubiquitous office (u-office) network is a good example of such a network, and we present some u-office example applications. In addition, we show that conventional paging algorithms are not feasible in such networks. Therefore, we derived a new paging algorithm from the measurement results of an experimental sensor network with short-range wireless links deployed in our office. We equipped persons with sensors and deployed sensor readers at selected places in our office. The sensors transmit messages to the sensor readers at regular intervals. If no sensor reader is in range, the message is lost. Our main observation is that, if a picocell shows an attraction property to a certain person, the residence time of an attached mobile terminal is not gamma distributed (as described in the literature) and the probability of long-lasting residences increases. Thus, if the residence time is larger than a certain threshold, the probability of a long-lasting residence time increases if a sensor reader location has an attraction property to a person. Based on this observation, our proposed paging algorithm registers the location of the mobile terminal only when the residence time in the cell is longer than a predetermined constant. By appropriately setting this constant, we can significantly reduce the registration message frequency while ensuring that the probability of the network successfully connecting to a mobile terminal remains high.

In this letter, a neural network (NN) for peak power reduction of an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signal is improved in order to suppress its computational complexity. Numerical experiments show that the amount of IFFTs in the proposed NN can be reduced to half, and its computational time can be reduced by 21.5% compared with a conventional NN. In comparison with the SLM, the proposed NN is effective to achieve high PAPR reduction and it has an advantage over the SLM under the equal computational condition.

The importance of respiratory monitoring systems during sleep have increased due to early diagnosis of sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) in the home. This paper presents a simple respiratory monitoring system suitable for home use having 3D ranging of targets. The range resolution and azimuth resolution are obtained by a stepped frequency transmitting signal and MIMO arrays with preferred pair M-sequence codes doubly modulating in transmission and reception, respectively. Due to the use of these codes, Gold sequence codes corresponding to all the antenna combinations are equivalently modulated in receiver. The signal to interchannel interference ratio of the reconstructed image is evaluated by numerical simulations. The results of experiments on a developed prototype 3D-MIMO radar system show that this system can extract only the motion of respiration of a human subject 2 m apart from a metallic rotatable reflector. Moreover, it is found that this system can successfully measure the respiration information of sleeping human subjects for 96.6 percent of the whole measurement time except for instances of large posture change.

Readout characteristics of a near-field optical disk with an acute-edged metallic nano-aperture were investigated. The electromagnetic field distributions of the near field around the aperture were analyzed, and the far-field scattering of the waves transmitted through the phase change disk was calculated by finite-difference time-domain method into which motion equations of free electrons were incorporated. Adjusting the edge angle of the aperture increased the field intensity of near-field light. The influence of the edge angle on output through the recorded mark was also investigated. It was found that there is an optimum edge angle that differs depending on the aperture width.
