In the field of adaptive notch filtering, Monotonically Increasing Gradient (MIG) algorithm has recently been proposed by Sugiura and Shimamura [1], where it is claimed that the MIG algorithm shows monotonically increasing gradient characteristics. However, our analysis has found that the underlying theory in [1] includes crucial errors. This letter shows that the formulation of the gradient characteristics in [1] is incorrect, and reveals that the MIG algorithm fails to realize monotonically increasing gradient characteristics when the input signal includes white noise.

Particle filter algorithm is an important algorithm in the field of target tracking. however, this algorithm faces the problem of sample impoverishment which is caused by the introduction of re-sampling and easily affected by illumination variation. This problem seriously affects the tracking performance of a particle filter algorithm. To solve this problem, we introduce a particle filter target tracking algorithm based on a dynamic niche genetic algorithm. The application of this dynamic niche genetic algorithm to re-sampling ensures particle diversity and dynamically fuses the color and profile features of the target in order to increase the algorithm accuracy under the illumination variation. According to the test results, the proposed algorithm accurately tracks the target, significantly increases the number of particles, enhances the particle diversity, and exhibits better robustness and better accuracy.

60GHz wireless communication requires analog baseband circuits having a bandwidth of about 1GHz. This paper presents a wide bandwidth current-mode low pass filter technique which involves current amplifiers, resistors and capacitors. The proposed current-mode filter is obtained by replacing an integrator employing an op-amp with another integrator employing a current amplifier. With the low input impedance current amplifier having little variation of the input impedance, the proposed filter is expected to improve linearity and power efficiency. The proposed current amplifier which employs super source follower topology with complementary input is suitable for the filter because of its class AB operation. Although simulation results shows the conventional current amplifier which employs super source follower topology without the complementary input has 12Ω variation and 30Ω input impedance, the proposed current amplifier has 1Ω variation and 21Ω input impedance. A fourth order 1GHz bandwidth filter which involves the proposed current amplifiers is designed in a 65nm CMOS technology. The filter can achieve IIP3 of 1.3dBV and noise of 0.6mVrms with power consumption of 13mW under supply voltage of 1.2V according to simulation results with layout parasitic extraction models. Active area of the filter is 380μm×170μm.

We propose a microphone array speech enhancement method that integrates spatial-cue-based source power spectral density (PSD) estimation and statistical speech model-based PSD estimation. The goal of this research was to clearly pick up target speech even in noisy environments such as crowded places, factories, and cars running at high speed. Beamforming with post-Wiener filtering is commonly used in many conventional studies on microphone-array noise reduction. For calculating a Wiener filter, speech/noise PSDs are essential, and they are estimated using spatial cues obtained from microphone observations. Assuming that the sound sources are sparse in the temporal-spatial domain, speech/noise PSDs may be estimated accurately. However, PSD estimation errors increase under circumstances beyond this assumption. In this study, we integrated speech models and PSD-estimation-in-beamspace method to correct speech/noise PSD estimation errors. The roughly estimated noise PSD was obtained frame-by-frame by analyzing spatial cues from array observations. By combining noise PSD with the statistical model of clean-speech, the relationships between the PSD of the observed signal and that of the target speech, hereafter called the observation model, could be described without pre-training. By exploiting Bayes' theorem, a Wiener filter is statistically generated from observation models. Experiments conducted to evaluate the proposed method showed that the signal-to-noise ratio and naturalness of the output speech signal were significantly better than that with conventional methods.

To ensure secure mobile communication, the communicating entities must know their mutual identities. The entities which need to be identified in a mobile communication system are mobile devices and the network. Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has specified Evolved Packet System Authentication and Key Agreement (EPS AKA) procedure for the mutual authentication of user and the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. EPS AKA certainly overcomes most of the vulnerabilities in the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) access procedures. However, the LTE access procedure still has security weaknesses against some of the sophisticated security threats, such as, Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks, Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks, rogue base station attacks and fails to ensure privacy protection for some of the important parameters. This paper proposes an improved security framework for the LTE access procedure by ensuring the confidentiality protection of International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) and random-challenge RAND. Also, our proposed system is designed to reduce the impact of DoS attacks which try to overwhelm the network with useless computations. We use a one-time shared key with a short lifetime between the UE and MME to protect IMSI and RAND privacy. Finally, we explore the parameters design for the proposed system which leads to satisfy the requirements imposed on computational load and latency as well as security strength.

Image interpolation is one of the image upsampling technologies from a single input image. This technology obtains high resolution images by fitting functions or models. Although image interpolation methods are faster than other upsampling technologies, they tend to cause jaggies and blurs in edge and texture regions. Multi-surface Fitting is one of the image upsampling techniques from multiple input images. This algorithm utilizes multiple local functions and the weighted means of the estimations in each local function. Multi-surface Fitting obtains high quality upsampled images. However, its quality depends on the number of input images. Therefore, this method is used in only limited situations. In this paper, we propose an image interpolation method with both high quality and a low computational cost which can be used in many situations. We adapt the idea of Multi-surface Fitting for the image upsampling problems from a single input image. We also utilize local functions to reduce blurs. To improve the reliability of each local function, we introduce new weights in the estimation of the local functions. Besides, we improve the weights for weighted means to estimate a target pixel. Moreover, we utilize convolutions with small filters instead of the calculation of each local function in order to reduce the computational cost. Experimental results show our method obtains high quality output images without jaggies and blurs in short computational time.

A high-image-rejection wireless receiver with an N-phase active RC complex filter is proposed and analyzed. Signal analysis shows that the double-conversion receiver with (N+N2) mixers corrects the gain and phase mismatches of the adjacent image. Monte Carlo simulations evaluate the relation between image-rejection performances and the dispersions of device parameters for the double-conversion wireless receiver. The Monte Carlo simulations show that the image rejection ratio of the adjacent image depends almost only on R and C mismatches in the complex filter.

Due to the rapid growth of applications that are based on Internet of Things (IoT) and real-time communications, mobile traffic growth is increasing exponentially. In highly populated areas, sudden concentration of numerous mobile user traffic can cause radio resource shortage, where traffic offloading is essential in preventing overload problems. Vertical handover (VHO) technology which supports seamless connectivity across heterogeneous wireless networks is a core technology of traffic offloading. In VHO, minimizing service interruption is a key design factor, since service interruption deteriorates service performance and degrades user experience (UX). Although 3GPP standard VHO procedures are designed to prevent service interruption, severe quality of service (QoS) degradation and severe interruption can occur in real network environments due to unintended disconnections with one's base station (BS) or access point (AP). In this article, the average minimum handover interruption time (HIT) (i.e., the guaranteed HIT influence) between LTE and Wi-Fi VHO is analyzed and measured based on 3GPP VHO access and decision procedures. In addition, the key parameters and procedures which affect HIT performance are analyzed, and a reference probability density function (PDF) for HIT prediction is derived from Kolmogorov-Smirnov test techniques.

This paper presents a design optimization method for a Gm-C active filter via geometric programming (GP). We first describe a GP-compatible model of a cascaded Gm-C filter that forms a biquadratic output transfer function. The bias, gain, bandwidth, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the Gm-C filter are described in a GP-compatible way. To further enhance the accuracy of the model, two modeling techniques are introduced. The first, a two-step selection method, chooses whether a saturation or subthreshold model should be used for each transistor in the filter to enhance the modeling accuracy. The second, a bisection method, is applied to include non-posynomial inequalities in the filter modeling. The presented filter model is optimized via a GP solver along with proposed modeling techniques. The numerical experiments over wide ranges of design specifications show good agreement between model and simulation results, with the average error for gain, bandwidth, and SNR being less than 9.9%, 4.4%, and 14.6%, respectively.

We propose a pre-filtering system for blind equalization in order to separate orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) - OFDM system. In a conventional blind MIMO-OFDM equalization without the pre-filtering system, there is a possibility that originally transmitted streams are permutated, resulting in the receiver being unable to retrieve desired signals. We also note that signal permutation is different for each subcarrier. In order to solve this problem, each transmitted stream of the proposed MIMO-OFDM system is pre-filtered by a unique allpass filter. In this paper, the pre-filter is referred to as transmit tagging filter (TT-Filter). At a receiver, an inverse filter of the TT-filter is used to blindly equalize a MIMO channel without permutation problem. Further, in order to overcome the issue of phase ambiguity, this paper introduces blind phase compensation.

We report on the fabrication of a magnetic metallic contaminant detector using multi-channel high-Tc RF-SQUIDs (superconducting quantum interference devices) for large packaged food. For food safety finding small metallic contaminants is an important issue for a food manufacturer. Hence, a detection method for small sized contaminants is required. Some detection systems for food inspection using high-Tc SQUIDs have been reported to date. The system described here is different from the previous systems in its permitted size for inspection, being larger at 150mm in height × 300mm in width. For inspection of large sized food packages, improvement of the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is an important issue because the signal intensity is inversely proportional to the cube of the distance between the SQUID sensor and the object. Therefore a digital filter was introduced and its parameters were optimized. As a result, a steel ball as small as 0.5mm in diameter at a stand-off distance of 167mm was successfully detected with more than SNR = 3.3.

Feature extractor plays an important role in visual tracking, but most state-of-the-art methods employ the same feature representation in all scenes. Taking into account the diverseness, a tracker should choose different features according to the videos. In this work, we propose a novel feature adaptive correlation tracker, which decomposes the tracking task into translation and scale estimation. According to the luminance of the target, our approach automatically selects either hierarchical convolutional features or histogram of oriented gradient features in translation for varied scenarios. Furthermore, we employ a discriminative correlation filter to handle scale variations. Extensive experiments are performed on a large-scale benchmark challenging dataset. And the results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art trackers in accuracy and robustness.

3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) has started to discuss D2D (Device-to-Device)-aided OTDOA (Observed Time Difference Of Arrival) as one of the mobile positioning enhancement techniques for LTE (Long Term Evolution) systems. It is a kind of multi-node based OTDOA which directly receives D2D signals from adjacent multiple UEs (User Equipment) to measure RSTD (Reference Signal's Time Difference). D2D signals provide valuable advantages in terms of OTDOA positioning because it can guarantee more reference nodes and high SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of PRS (Positioning Reference Signal). Two typical methods for multi-node based OTDOA can be applied to D2D-aided OTDOA. Multiple OTDOA positioning is one of the multi-node based methods that averages multiple results from OTDOA; however, it cannot always guarantee high accuracy due to the non-uniform geometry of UEs. OTDOA positioning based on TSE (Taylor Series Expansion) algorithm may be one of the solutions; however, it has the initial value problem and high computational complexity due to its iterative procedure. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel D2D-aided OTDOA positioning method which utilizes UEs not as reference node of OTDOA but as assisting node for RSTD error reduction. The proposed method can reduce RSTD error of eNB based hyperbola by using multiple hyperbola bands. The hyperbola band indicates the possible range in which a hyperbola can occur due to RSTD error. Then, by using principal axes of hyperbolas, we estimate a modified hyperbola from the overlap area of hyperbola bands, which has less RSTD error. We verify that the proposed method can effectively reduce RSTD error and improve positioning performance with lower computational complexity.

An all-digital fully-synthesizable PVT-tolerant clock data recovery (CDR) architecture for wireline chip-to-chip interconnects is presented. The proposed architecture enables the co-synthesis of the CDR with the digital core. By eliminating the resource hungry manual layout and interfacing steps, which are necessary for conventional CDR topologies, the design process and the time-to-market can be drastically improved. Besides, the proposed CDR architecture enables the re-usability of majority of the sub-systems which enables easy migration to different process nodes. The proposed CDR is also equipped with a self-calibration scheme for ensuring tolerence over PVT. The proposed fully-syntehsizable CDR was implemented in 28nm FDSOI. The system achieves a maximum data rate of 10.06Gbps while consuming a power of 16.1mW from a 1V power supply.
Periodic interference frequently affects the measurement of small signals and causes problems in clinical diagnostics. Adaptive filters can be used as potential tools for cancelling such interference. However, when the interference has a frequency fluctuation, the ideal adaptive-filter coefficients for cancelling the interference also fluctuate. When the adaptation property of the algorithm is slow compared with the frequency fluctuation, the interference-cancelling performance is degraded. However, if the adaptation is too quick, the performance is degraded owing to the target signal. To overcome this problem, we propose an adaptive filter that suppresses the fluctuation of the ideal coefficients by utilizing a $rac{pi}{2}$ phase-delay device. This method assumes a frequency response that characterizes the transmission path from the interference source to the main input signal to be sufficiently smooth. In the numerical examples, the proposed method exhibits good performance in the presence of a frequency fluctuation when the forgetting factor is large. Moreover, we show that the proposed method reduces the calculation cost.

Mobile traffic is experiencing tremendous growth, and this growing wave is no doubt increasing the use of radio component of mobile devices, resulting in shorter battery lifetime. In this paper, we present an Energy-Aware Download Method (EDM) based on the Markov Decision Process (MDP) to optimize the data download energy for mobile applications. Unlike the previous download schemes in literature that focus on the energy efficiency by simply delaying the download requests, which often leads to a poor user experience, our MDP model learns off-line from a set of training download workloads for different user patterns. The model is then integrated into the mobile application to deal the download request at runtime, taking into account the current battery level, LTE reference signal receiving power (RSRP), reference signal signal to noise radio (RSSNR) and task size as input of the decision process, and maximizes the reward which refers to the expected battery life and user experience. We evaluate how the EDM can be used in the context of a real file downloading application over the LTE network. We obtain, on average, 20.3%, 15% and 45% improvement respectively for energy consumption, latency, and performance of energy-delay trade off, when compared to the Android default download policy (Minimum Delay).

In this paper, a hardware efficient design methodology for a configurable-point multiple-stream pipeline FFT processor is presented. We first compared the memory and arithmetic components of different pipeline FFT architectures, and obtained the conclusion that MDF architecture is more hardware efficient than MDC for the overall processor. Then, in order to reduce the computational complexity, a binary-tree representation was adopted to analyze the decomposition algorithm. Consequently, the coefficient multiplications are minimized among all the decomposition probabilities. In addition, an efficient output reorder circuit was designed for the multiple-stream architecture. An 128∼2048 point 4-stream FFT processor in LTE system was designed in SMIC 55nm technology for evaluation. It owns 1.09mm2 core area with 82.6mW power consumption at 122.88MHz clock frequency.

Protection of the licensed user (LU) and utilization of the spectrum are the most important goals in cognitive radio networks. To achieve the first goal, a cognitive user (CU) is required to sense for a longer time period, but this adversely affects the second goal, i.e., throughput or utilization of the network, because of the reduced time left for transmission in a time slot. This tradeoff can be controlled by simultaneous sensing and data transmission for the whole frame duration. However, increasing the sensing time to the frame duration consumes more energy. We propose a new frame structure in this paper, in which transmission is done for the whole frame duration whereas sensing is performed only until the required detection probability is satisfied. This means the CU is not required to perform sensing for the whole frame duration, and thus, conserves some energy by sensing for a smaller duration. With the proposed frame structure, throughput of all the CUs is estimated for the frame and, based on the estimated throughput and consumed energy in sensing and transmission, the energy efficient pair of CUs (transmitter and receiver) that maximizes system throughput by consuming less energy, is selected for a time slot. The selected CUs transmits data for the whole time slot, whereas sensing is performed only for certain duration. The performance improvement of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through simulations by comparing it with existing schemes.
This paper presents the set of procedures to blend GNSS and V2V communication to improve the performance of the stand-alone on-board GNSS receiver and to assure mutual positioning with a bounded error. Particle filter algorithm is applied to enhance mutual positioning of vehicles, and it fuses the information provided by the GNSS receiver, wireless measurements in vehicular environments, odometer, and digital road map data including reachability and zone probabilities. Measurement-based statistical model of relative distance as a function of Time-of-Arrival is experimentally obtained. The number of collaborative vehicles to the mutual positioning procedure is investigated in terms of positioning accuracy and network performance through realistic simulation studies, and the proposed mutual positioning procedure is experimentally evaluated by a fleet of five IEEE 802.11p radio modem equipped vehicles. Collaboration in a VANET improves availability of position measurement and its accuracy up to 40% in comparison with respect to the stand-alone GNSS receiver.

Power line noise is one of critical problems in bio-sensing. Various approaches utilizing both analog and digital techniques has been proposed. However, these approaches need active circuits with a wide dynamic range. N-path notch filters which implementable using passive components can be a promising solution to this problem. However, the notch depth of a conventional N-path notch filter is limited by the number of path. A new N-path notch filter with additional S/H circuit is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed topology improves the notch depth by 43dB.
