In this work, we have successfully patterned OLED glass substrates with a novel Yb-doped femtosecond laser. Such patterns can simultaneously increase the outcoupling efficiency up to 24.4%, as a result of reducing substrate waveguided light by scattering at the substrate/air interface and reduce the viewing angle dependence of the electroluminescent spectra.
The thin film organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) using organic semiconductors are inferior to oxgen-resistance and water-resistance, and the OPVs have a drawback that the photoelectric conversion efficiency (η) is low. For high efficiency of the OPVs, control of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure in the active layer is demanded. Therefore, it is thought that we can control the BHJ structure easily if we can bring a change in the aggregated structure and the crystallinity of the BHJ structure by introducing the third component that is different from the organic semiconductor into the activity layer. In this study, we introduced peptide consisting of phenylalanine of 2 molecules into the active layer prepared by poor solvent addition effect for the organic thin film solar cells and intended to try high efficiency of the organic thin film solar cells and examined the electrochemistry characteristic of the cells.
As a modulation scheme for optical wireless communication, there is MPolSK (multilevel polarization shift keying) that modulates a state of polarization of light. MPolSK has a problem that it is severely affected by mismatched polarization axes. Although MDPolSK (multilevel differential PolSK) can overcome the problem, it is susceptible to noise, and its SER (symbol error rate) degrades as compared to MPolSK. In this paper, we propose one kind of MDPolSK that estimates the mismatched polarization axes in the receiver. We analyzed SER of the proposed scheme by computer simulations. The result shows that the proposed scheme is not affected by the mismatched polarization axes, and it provides a good SER as compared to the conventional MDPolSK. In addition, we modified the constellation used in the proposed scheme to improve SER.

This paper proposes a radio propagation prediction method that uses point cloud data based on a hybrid of the ray-tracing (RT) method and an effective roughness (ER) model in urban environments for the fifth generation mobile communications system using high frequency bands. The proposed prediction method incorporates propagation characteristics that consider diffuse scattering from surface irregularities. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by comparisons of measurement and prediction results gained from the proposed method and a conventional RT method based on power delay and angular profiles. From predictions based on the power delay and angular profiles, we find that the proposed method, assuming the roughness of σh=1mm, accurately predicts the propagation characteristics in the 20GHz band for urban line-of-sight environments. The prediction error for the delay spread is 2.1ns to 9.7ns in an urban environment.

Device-to-device (D2D) communication in cellular networks is defined as direct communication between two mobile users without traversing the base station (BS) or core network. D2D communication can occur on the cellular frequencies (i.e., inband) or unlicensed spectrum (i.e., outband). A high capacity IEEE 802.11-based outband device-to-device communication system for cellular networks is introduced in this paper. Transmissions in device-to-device connections are managed using our proposed medium access control (MAC) protocol. In the proposed MAC protocol, backoff window size is adjusted dynamically considering the current network status and utilizing an appropriate transmission attempt rate. We have considered both cases that the request to send/clear to send (RTS/CTS) mechanism is and is not used in our protocol design. Describing mechanisms for guaranteeing quality of service (QoS) and enhancing reliability of the system is another part of our work. Moreover, performance of the system in the presence of channel impairments is investigated analytically and through simulations. Analytical and simulation results demonstrate that our proposed system has high throughput, and it can provide different levels of QoS for its users.

This paper intends to reduce duration times in typical collective communications. We introduce logical addressing system apart from the physical one and, by rearranging the logical node addresses properly, we intend to reduce communication overheads so that ideal communication is performed. One of the key issues is rearrangement of the logical addressing system. We introduce genetic algorithm (GA) as meta-heuristic solution as well as the random search strategy. Our GA-based method achieves at most 2.50 times speedup in three-traffic-pattern cases.

Lighting constrained visible-light communications are expected as indoor communications of next generation. In lighting constrained visible-light communications, lighting devices are used not only for illuminating rooms but also for optical wireless communications. For lighting constrained visible-light communications, we have been proposed a variable N-parallel code-shift-keying (VN-CSK) using a modified prime sequence code (MPSC). The VN-CSK system using MPSC has not only a suppression function for reducing co-channel interference from neighboring lighting devices, but also a function for keeping constant data transmission regardless of dimming control. In this paper, the bit error rate (BER) of the VN-CSK system using MPSC is derived under an indoor visible-light communication channel by theoretical analysis. Moreover, we evaluate the BER performance for the brightness level (dimming control stage).

We analyze the behaviors of the FXLMS algorithm using a statistical-mechanical method. The cross-correlation between a primary path and an adaptive filter and the autocorrelation of the adaptive filter are treated as macroscopic variables. We obtain simultaneous differential equations that describe the dynamical behaviors of the macroscopic variables under the condition that the tapped-delay line is sufficiently long. The obtained equations are deterministic and closed-form. We analytically solve the equations to obtain the correlations and finally compute the mean-square error. The obtained theory can quantitatively predict the behaviors of computer simulations including the cases of both not only white but also nonwhite reference signals. The theory also gives the upper limit of the step size in the FXLMS algorithm.

The number of infected hosts on enterprise networks has been increased by drive-by download attacks. In these attacks, users of compromised popular websites are redirected toward websites that exploit vulnerabilities of a browser and its plugins. To prevent damage, detection of infected hosts on the basis of proxy logs rather than blacklist-based filtering has started to be researched. This is because blacklists have become difficult to create due to the short lifetime of malicious domains and concealment of exploit code. To detect accesses to malicious websites from proxy logs, we propose a system for detecting malicious URL sequences on the basis of three key ideas: focusing on sequences of URLs that include artifacts of malicious redirections, designing new features related to software other than browsers, and generating new training data with data augmentation. To find an effective approach for classifying URL sequences, we compared three approaches: an individual-based approach, a convolutional neural network (CNN), and our new event de-noising CNN (EDCNN). Our EDCNN reduces the negative effects of benign URLs redirected from compromised websites included in malicious URL sequences. Evaluation results show that only our EDCNN with proposed features and data augmentation achieved a practical classification performance: a true positive rate of 99.1%, and a false positive rate of 3.4%.

Forward Error Correction (FEC) schemes have played an important role in intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems. While hard-decision FEC schemes are inferior to soft-decision FEC codes in terms of decoding performance, they are widely used in these VLC systems because receivers are only capable of recognizing logical values 0 and 1. In this letter, we propose a method to calculate the log-likelihood ratios (LLR) values which are used as input of soft-decision FEC decoders. Simulation results show that Polar decoder using proposed method performs better than that of using the hard-decision technique.

We have demonstrated the lowest ever reported signature generation time of 31.3 μs at 238MHz clock frequency. Energy consumption is 3.28 μJ/signature-generation, which is same as the lowest reported till date. We have also derived addition formulae on Elliptic curve useful for reduce the number of registers and operation cycles.

In this paper, the analog code modulation characteristics of distributed-based transversal filters (DTFs) suitable for use in spectrally encoded CDMA systems are presented. The DTF is verified as an appropriate method to use in high-speed CDMA systems as opposed to previously proposed methods, which are intended for Direct Sequence (DS) CDMA systems. The large degree of freedom of DTF design permits controlling the filter pulse response to generate well specified temporal phase-coded signals. A decoder structure that performs bipolar detection of user subbands giving rise to a Spectral-Amplitude Encoded CDMA system is considered. Practical implementations require truncating the spreading signals by a time window of duration equal to the span time of the tapped delay line. Filter functions are chosen to demodulate the matched channel and achieve improved user interference rejection avoiding the need for transversal filters featuring a large number of taps. As a proof-of-concept of the electronic SAE scheme, practical circuit designs are developed at low speeds (3-dB point at 1 GHz) demonstrating the viability of the proposal.

We propose an approach to allocate bandwidth for a satellite communications (SATCOM) system that includes the recent high-throughput satellite (HTS) with frequency flexibility. To efficiently operate the system, we manage the limited bandwidth resources available for SATCOM by employing a control method that allows the allocated bandwidths to exceed the communication demand of user terminals per HTS beam. To this end, we consider bandwidth allocation for SATCOM as an optimal control problem. Then, assuming that the model of communication requests is available, we propose an optimal control method by combining model predictive control and sparse optimization. The resulting control method enables the efficient use of the limited bandwidth and reduces the bandwidth loss and number of control actions for the HTS compared to a setup with conventional frequency allocation and no frequency flexibility. Furthermore, the proposed method allows to allocate bandwidth depending on various control objectives and beam priorities by tuning the corresponding weighting matrices. These findings were verified through numerical simulations by using a simple time variation model of the communication requests and predicted aircraft communication demand obtained from the analysis of actual flight tracking data.

We propose a novel mechanism of short-term image-sticking phenomenon in in-plane switching liquid crystal displays (IPS LCDs) that is related to ionic relaxation generated by a vertical electric field caused by a flexoelectric effect. We discuss the differences between electric fields caused by the flexoelectric effect and those caused by DC bias voltage.

In this paper, we propose a secure near-field communication (NFC) for smartphones by combining acoustic and vibrational communication. In our hybrid system, a transmitter transmits an encrypted message and encryption key from a loudspeaker and vibration motor, respectively. While the sound emitted from the loudspeaker propagates through the air, the vibration emitted by the vibration motor propagates through the body of smartphones. Hence, only receivers touching the transmitter can receive both the encrypted message and the key, resulting in secure communication. We designed a software modulator and demodulator suitable for the vibrational communication by using return-to-zero (RZ) code. Then we established a hybrid communication system by combining acoustic and vibrational communication modems, and evaluated its performance in experiments. The results indicate that our hybrid system achieved a secure (among physically contacted devices) and fast (800kbps) NFC for smartphones.

In this letter, we propose a supervised bimodal emotion recognition approach based on two important human emotion modalities including facial expression and body gesture. A effectively supervised feature fusion algorithms named supervised multiset canonical correlation analysis (SMCCA) is presented to established the linear connection between three sets of matrices, which contain the feature matrix of two modalities and their concurrent category matrix. The test results in the bimodal emotion recognition of the FABO database show that the SMCCA algorithm can get better or considerable efficiency than unsupervised feature fusion algorithm covering canonical correlation analysis (CCA), sparse canonical correlation analysis (SCCA), multiset canonical correlation analysis (MCCA) and so on.

Digitization of analog terrestrial TV broadcasting has recently been accelerated in many countries, and the effective utilization of vacant frequencies has also been investigated for new systems in each country. In Japan, a portion of vacant frequencies in the VHF-high band was allocated to the public broadband mobile communication (PBB) system. To evaluate the current PBB system and develop future broadband communication systems in this band, it is important to analyze the propagation channel more accurately. In this study, we characterize the propagation channel for 200MHz band broadband mobile communication systems, using measured channel impulse responses (CIRs). In the characterization process, the Saleh-Valenzuela (S-V) model is utilized to extract channel model parameters statistically. When evaluating the fluctuation of path power gain, we also propose to model the fluctuation of path power gain using the generalized extreme value distribution instead of the conventional log-normal distribution. The extracted CIR model parameters are validated by cumulative distribution function of root-means-square delay spread and maximum excess delay, comparing simulation result to measurement result. From the extracted CIR model parameters, we clarified the characteristics of 200MHz band broadband mobile communication systems in non-line-of-sight environments based on S-V model with the proposed channel model.
This paper proposes the absorber integrated planar array antenna for a 120-GHz-band close proximity wireless system. It consists of split-ring resonators (SRRs) patterned on a quartz substrate and a plate-laminated-waveguide planar slot array antenna. Precise alignment and multiple reflection between Tx-Rx antenna become severe problem as the carrier frequency increases, such as >100GHz. The absorber integrated planar slot array antenna solves these problems. We designed a SRR unit cell that acts as a millimeter-wave (MMW) absorber, and the simulated S11 of the SRR absorber at 125GHz is -37dB. The use of the SRR absorber on the planar slot antenna suppresses the multiple reflection between Tx and Rx antennas, however the transmission loss between Tx and Rx antennas increases. We changed the conductivity and cell size of 2×3 element SRR unit cells directly above the waveguide slots in order to make them act as an SRR director, and the use of the SRR director improved the transmission loss by 2.7dB. We simulated the transmission characteristics of a close-proximity wireless system using the SRR absorber integrated planar slot antennas. The simulated fluctuation of S21 in the 120-130GHz band is below 2.6dB, and the delayed waves that come from the multiple reflection between Tx and Rx antennas were suppressed.

The authors have proposed a new type of flexible and printable 12GHz-band phase shifter using polymer actuator for the first time. Polymer bending actuator was used as a termination device of a reflection-type 3-dB, 90° hybrid coupler as the phase-shift control unit which controls the electrical length of the waveguide for microwave signals by the applied bias voltage. The microstrip line circuit of the device has been fabricated using low-cost screen printing method. Polymer bending actuator having three-layer stacking structure, in which an ionic liquid electrolyte layer is sandwiched with two conductive network composite layers, was formed by wet processes. The authors have confirmed that the phase shift could be controlled in analog by low driving voltages of 2-7 V for the actuator with a insertion loss of 2.73 dB. This phase shifter can be integrated with flexible patch antenna and the current flexible polymer electronics devices such as transistors.
