An inverse scattering problem in three dimensional two layered media is investigated. The shape and the location of the acoustic scatterer buried in one half-space are determined. With some a priori information, it becomes possible to solve this problem in three dimensions. Using the moment method, the scattered field is obtained for the estimated scatterer. An iterative procedure based on the Newton's method for the nonlinear least square problem is able to solve the inverse scattering problem. Some numerical results are presented.

A two-dimensional algorithm, which combines the well-known Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging and the recently developed effective inversion method, is presented and applied to a three-dimensional configuration. During the first stage a two-dimensional image of a realistic three-dimensional buried object is obtained. In the second stage the average permittivity of the object is estimated using a two-dimensional effective inversion scheme where the geometrical information retrieved from the SAR image is employed. The algorithm is applicable in real time.
In this paper, the electromagnetic scattering from a cylinder with a computer-generated random rough surface is analyzed by a numerical simulation method. The validity of the proposed numerical method is confirmed by comparing the present numerical results with those calculated by the perturbation method to second order and its Pade approximation. It is shown that the present proposed method can be applied to the case where the surface roughness becomes relatively large.
We discuss human collaborative discovery processes using a production system model as a cognitive simulator. We have developed an interactive production system architecture to construct the simulator. Two production systems interactively find targets in which the only experimental results are shared; each does not know the hypothesis the other system has. Through this kind of interaction, we verify whether or not the performance of two systems interactively finding targets exceeds that of two systems independently finding targets. If we confirm the superiority of collaborative discovery, we approve of emergence by the interaction. The results are: (1) generally speaking collaboration does not produces the emergence defined above, and (2) as the different degree of hypothesis testing strategies that the two system use gets larger, the benefits of interaction gradually increases.

Another high performance simulated annealing is proposed which we call widely stepping simulated annealing (WSSA). It flies from a starting high temperature to a finishing low temperature staying at only twenty or so temperatures to approach thermal equilibriums. We survey the phase transition in simulated annealing process and estimate the major cost variation (dEc) at the critical temperature. The WSSA uses a function (H(t)) that represents the probability for a hill-climbing with the dEc of cost increase to be accepted in Metropolis' Monte Carlo simulation at temperature t. We have applied the first version of WSSA to one dimensional transistor placement optimizations for several industrial standard cells, and compared its performance with simulated annealing with a geometrically scheduled cooling. The solutions by the WSSA are as good as, and sometimes much better than, the solutions by the simulated annealing, while the time consumption by the WSSA is properly under one 30th of that by the simulated annealing.
A novel technique is developed to reconstruct a nonuniform transmission line by using arbitrary incident waveforms. By discretizing both the incident and reflected waves, we find that the ratio of reflected wave to incident wave has the same form as the reflection coefficient obtained by treating a nonuniform line as a cascaded, multiple-section signal line. A reconstruction scheme is derived to get the impedance profile of a nonuniform line. Some examples are presented to illustrate this new technique.
Numerous scientific and engineering fields extensively utilize optimization techniques for finding appropriate parameter values of models. Various optimization methods are available for practical use. The optimization algorithms are classified primarily due to the rates of convergence. Unfortunately, it is often the case in practice that the particular optimization method with specified convergence rates performs substantially differently on diverse optimization tasks. Theoretical classification of convergence rates then lacks its relevance in the context of the practical optimization. It is therefore desirable to formulate a novel classification framework relevant to the theoretical concept of convergence rates as well as to the practical optimization. This article introduces such classification framework. The proposed classification framework enables specification of optimization techniques and optimization tasks. It also underlies its inherent relationship to the convergence rates. Novel classification framework is applied to categorizing the tasks of optimizing polynomials and the problem of training multilayer perceptron neural networks.

A fully balanced (FB) transconductor using two multi-input single-ended (SE) CMOS transconductors is proposed, where the transconductors use MOS transitors operating in a triode region for achieving a wide linear input-range. SE circuits are easier to design than differential circuits and inherently reject common-mode (CM) signals. The multi-input structure is used to make a CM feedback loop and to determine an output CM voltage. A high-output-resistance current mirror is used in converting a differential signal to a single-ended signal in order to achieve a high common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) and a high output-resistance of the transconductor. The FB transconductor achieves a 2-Vpp linear input range at a 2.5-V power supply and consumes 1.74 mA. The output resistance of the FB transconductor is 2 MΩ. It operates at 2 V with a linear input-range of 1.2 Vpp and at 1.6 V with a linear input-range of 0.9 Vpp. A 2.5-V 2.5-MHz FB Gm-C filter using the FB transconductors achieved a CMRR of 45 dB and a passband IIP3 of 32 dBm.

We consider a discrete event system controlled by a decentralized supervisor consisting of n local supervisors. Given a nonempty and closed language as the upper bound specification, we consider a problem to synthesize a reliable decentralized supervisor such that the closed-loop behavior is still legal under possible failures of any less than or equal to n-k (1 k n) local supervisors. We synthesize two such reliable decentralized supervisors. One is synthesized based on a suitably defined normal sublanguage. The other is the fully decentralized supervisor induced by a suitably defined centralized supervisor. We then show that the generated languages under the control actions of these two decentralized supervisors are incomparable.

In this paper, a novel chaos circuit with long working-life is proposed. The proposed circuit consists of NMOS-coupled discrete-time chaotic cell circuits. By employing chaos synchronization phenomenon, the proposed circuit can achieve long working-life. Since the proposed circuit is less susceptible to breakdown, the rate of the acceptable product for chaos IC can be improved. Furthermore, thanks to the coupling by using NMOSFET's, the loss of the connection line between chaotic cell circuits can be controlled electronically. Therefore, the proposed system designed by using switched-current (SI) techniques is useful as an experimental tool to analyze chaos synchronization phenomena. The validity of the proposed circuits is confirmed by computer simulations and experiments.
This article addresses two issues. Firstly, the convergence property of conjugate gradient (CG) algorithm is investigated by a Chebyshev polynomial approximation. The analysis result shows that its convergence behaviour is affected by an acceleration term over the steepest descent (SD) algorithm. Secondly, a new CG algorithm is proposed in order to boost the tracking capability for time-varying parameters. The proposed algorithm based on re-initialising forgetting factor shows a fast tracking ability and a noise-immunity property when it encounters an unexpected parameter change. A fast tracking capability is verified through a computer simulation in a system identification problem.

In this paper, visualized sound retrieval and categorization methods using a feature-based image search engine were evaluated aiming at efficient video scene query. Color-coded patterns of the sound spectrogram are adopted as the visualized sound index. Sound categorization experiments were conducted using visualized sound databases including speech, bird song, musical sounds, insect chirping, and the sound-track of sports video. The results of the retrieval experiments show that the simple feature-based image search engine can be effectively used for visualized sound retrieval and categorization. The results of categorization experiments involving humans show that after brief training humans can at least do rough categorization. These results suggest that using visualized sound can be effective method for an efficient video scene query.

In this paper, we study decentralized supervisory control of discrete event systems where local disabling actions are fused by the OR rule. We generalize an on-line procedure for synthesizing decentralized supervisors proposed by Prosser. By using the generalized procedure, we can achieve a sublanguage of a specification which is not achieved by a class of decentralized supervisors synthesized by the Prosser's procedure.
Nonlinear behavior of electromagnetic surface waves propagating along a tangentially magnetized ferrite slab is investigated. The nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE) which describes the temporal evolution of the electromagnetic wave pulses has been derived directly from the Maxwell equations and the equation of precessional motion for the magnetization in the ferrite slab with the aid of the reductive perturbation method without magnetostatic approximation. Based on the formula derived, we have numerically evaluated the frequency-dependence of the nonlinear coefficient in the NLSE for both a magnetostatic surface wave mode and a dynamic mode. As a result, we have confirmed the possibility of the propagation of solitons in the waveguide.

Two main characteristics of VBR MPEG video traffic are the different statistics according to different picture types and the periodic traffic pattern due to GOP structure. Especially, the I-pictures at the beginning of each GOP generate much more traffic than other pictures. Therefore, when several VBR MPEG video sources are superposed, the multiplexing performance can vary according to the variations of their I-picture start times. In this paper, we show how the start time arrangement of the superposed VBR MPEG videos can significantly affect the cell loss ratio characteristics at the multiplexers, by using U-NDPP/D/1/B queueing model. It is also shown that the Lognormal distribution is more suitable for modeling VBR MPEG video traffic than the Normal and Gamma distributions, in the queueing application's view points.

BaAl2S4:Eu thin-film EL device using a new blue emitting EL phosphor was prepared by the two targets pulse-electron-beam evaporation. The maximum luminance level was 65 cd/m2 under the 50 Hz pulse voltage. The EL spectrum had blue emission with a peak around 470 nm due to the transition for Eu2+ ion. The CIE color coordinates of BaAl2S4:Eu EL device were x = 0.12 and y = 0.10. The performance of blue-emitting BaAl2S4:Eu EL devices is shown to be sufficient for commercial color EL display in color purity and luminance level.

By using full-color light emitting diode (LED) panel, we have been studying a stereoscopic full-color large television in broad daylight. In order to implement stereoscopic large display for the general public, optimum parameters of display elements and parallax barrier and viewing areas of stereoscopic display using parallax barrier are discussed. Although stereoscopic display with parallax barrier permits the viewer to view stereoscopic images without any special glasses, its viewing area is restricted by crosstalk and disappearing of pixels. Enlarged viewing areas, which are derived from the small ratio of light emitting region to pixel and a proper aperture ratio of parallax barrier, are analyzed. A model of a viewer standing toward the display is proposed because the viewer apart from the horizontal center of the display turns to the center point of LED display and this turning causes a deviation of viewer's eye position. Then, the allowable number of viewing locations is derived on "no crosstalk" and "no disappearance" conditions. The optimum aperture ratio of parallax barrier and the width of light emitting region is obtained through the optimization. The viewing area obtained from the analysis is confirmed by experiments using full-color LED panel. Relations between viewing area and the moire fringes is also discussed. The depth of the viewing area agrees the viewing distance where no moire fringe appears. Furthermore, possibility of display for the crowds is discussed.

Although a number of car-traffic simulators have been developed for various purposes, none of the existing simulators enhance the simulation accuracy using sensor data or allow the system structure to re-configure the system structure depending on the application. Our goal was to develop a highly accurate, highly modular, flexible, and scalable micro-model car-traffic simulation system. The HLA (High Level Architecture) was applied to every system module as a standard interface between each module. This allows an efficient means for evaluating and validating a variety of micro-model simulation schemes. Our ongoing projects consist of running several identical simulations concurrently, with different parameter sets. By sending the results of these simulations to a manager module, which analyzes both the parameter sets and the simulated results, the manager module can evaluate the best-simulated results and determine the next action by comparing these results with the sensor data. In this system, the sensor data or the statistical data on the flow of traffic, obtained by monitoring real roads, is used to improve the simulation accuracy. Future systems are being planned to employ real time sensor data, where the input of the data occurs at almost real time speed. In this paper, we discuss the design of a HLA-based car-traffic simulation system and the construction of a sensor-data fusion algorithm. We also discuss our preliminary evaluation of the results obtained with this system. The results show that the proposed fusion algorithm can adjust the simulation accuracy to the logged sensor data within a difference of 5% (minimum 1.5%) in a specific time period. We also found that simulations with 500 different parameter sets can be executed within 5 minutes using 8 simulator modules.

An SCFL-compatible 40-Gbit/s selector circuit using resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs) and high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) is presented. The circuit comprises two monostable-bistable transition elements (MOBILEs) using RTDs, a HEMT NOR circuit, and a HEMT output buffer based on source-coupled-FET logic (SCFL). The circuit is fabricated by monolithically integrating RTDs and 0.1-µm HEMTs on an InP substrate. The fabricated circuit exhibits clear eye-opening at 40 Gbit/s with an output swing of 800 mVp-p, which is close to the conventional high-speed logic IC interface called SCFL.
