  • A Study on Objective Picture Quality Scales for Pictures Digitally Encoded for Broadcast

    Considering the trend towards adopting high efficiency picture coding schemes into digital broadcasting services, we investigate objective picture quality scales for evaluating digitally encoded still and moving pictures. First, the study on the objective picture quality scale for high definition still pictures coded by the JPEG scheme is summarized. This scale is derived from consideration of the following distortion factors; 1) weighted noise by the spatial frequency characteristics and masking effects of human vision, 2) block distortion, and 3) mosquito noise. Next, an objective picture quality scale for motion pictures of standard television coded by the hybrid DCT scheme is studied. In addition to the above distortion factors, the temporal frequency characteristics of vision are also considered. Furthermore, considering that all of these distortions vary over time in motion pictures, methods for determining a single objective picture quality value for this time varying distortion are examined. As a result, generally applicable objective picture quality scale is obtained that correlates extremely well with subjective picture quality scale for both still and motion pictures, irrespective of the contents of the pictures. Having an objective scale facilitates automated picture quality evaluation and control.

    We are studying a novel concept of the on-line hospital system using a virtual environment called Hyper Hospital," the Hyper Hospital" is a medical care system which is constructed in a distributed manner to the electronic information network using virtual reality (VR) as a human interface. In the present report, we studied the physiological and psychological responses of healthy subjects induced by the usage of the VR in terms of fatigue. Twenty healthy young male subjects were exposed to the virtual reality system and they performed some psychological tasks with a virtual nurse for 30 minutes. Several parameters of physiological, psychological, and subjective fatigue were measured. None of the physiological or psychological parameters such as urinary catecholamine release, ECG, etc. showed significant fatigue induced by our VR system. However, by using a standard questionnaire, some kinds of subjective fatigue were noted and they were thought to be indicating a direction of improvement for our VR system.

  • Virtual Rate-Based Queueing: A Generalized Queueing Discipline for Switches in High-Speed Networks

    A new rate-controlled queueing discipline, called virtual rate-based queueing (VRBQ), is proposed for packet-switching nodes in connection-oriented, high-speed, wide-area networks. The VRBQ discipline is based on the virtual rate which has a value between the average and peak transmission rates. By choosing appropriate virtual rates, various requirements can be met regarding the performance and quality of services in integrated-service networks. As the worst-case performance guarantee, we determine the upper bounds of queueing delay when VRBQ is combined with an admission control mechanism, i.e., Dynamic Time Windows or Leaky Bucket. Simulation results demonstrate the fairness policy of VRBQ in comparison with other queueing disciplines, and the performance of sources controlled under different virtual rates.

  • Comparison of System-Sharing Configurations for Narrowband and Video Distribution Services

    This paper compares three typical system-sharing configurations for FTTH networks that provide narrowband and video distribution services and proposes a remote node locating strategy for each configuration. Two new evaluation factors, required land space and service provisioning effort, are included in the calculation, in addition to facility cost and maintenance effort. By considering these factors together, the total network cost is calculated and the sensitivity to the number of remote nodes is evaluated. Finally, the most economical system-sharing configuration is identified on the basis of the evaluations for two typical service areas in Japan, for both present and future cost environments.

  • Neural Network Multiprocessors Applied with Dynamically Reconfigurable Pipeline Architecture

    Processing elements (PEs) with a dynamically reconfigurable pipeline architecture allow the high-speed calculation of widely used neural model which is multi-layer perceptrons with the backpropagation (BP) learning rule. Its architecture that was proposed for a single chip is extended to multiprocessors' structure. Each PE holds an element of the synaptic weight matrix and the input vector. Multi-local buses, a swapping mechanism of the weight matrix and the input vector, and transfer commands between processor elements allow the implementation of neural networks larger than the physical PE array. Estimated peak performance by the measurement of single processor element is 21.2 MCPS in the evaluation phase and 8.0 MCUPS during the learning phase at a clock frequency of 50 MHz. In the model, multi-layer perceptrons with 768 neurons and 131072 synapses are trained by a BP learning rule. It corresponds to 1357 MCPS and 512 MCUPS with 64 processor elements and 32 neurons in each PE.

  • A Reduced Scan Shift Method for Sequential Circuit Testing

    This paper presents a method, called reduced scan shift, which generates short test sequences for full scan circuits. In this method, scan shift operations can be reduced, i.e., not all but part of flip-flops (FFs) are controlled and observed. This method, unlike partial scan methods, does not decrease fault coverage. In the reduced scan shift, test vectors for the combinational part of a circuit are fistly generated. Since short test sequence will be obtained from the small test vectors set, test compaction techniques are used in the test vector generation. For each test vector in the obtained test set, it is found which FFs should be controlled or observed. And then a scan chain is configured so that FFs more frequently required to be controlled (observed) can be located close to the scan input (output). After the scan chain is configured, the scan shift requirement is examined for the essential faults of each test vector. Essential fault is defined to be a fault which is detected by only one test vector but not other test vectors. The order of test vectors is carefully determined by comparing the scan control requirement of a test vector with the scan observation requirement of another test vector so that unnecessary scan shift operations only for controlling or observing FFs can be reduced. A method of determining the order of test vectors with state transition is additionally described. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by the experimental results for benchmark circuits.

    When a new digital broadcasting system is introduced for the viewers, it is important to be able to include new services and system aspects. That is to give the viewers new experiences and meet the demands they might have in the future. To fulfil the viewers expectations, is a key for success for the introduction of new service and product. It is equally important to look at the long term perspective and have the possibility to gradually develop the digital broadcasting systems we establish today. A fully integrated multimedia system is a hybrid of different media services, distribution paths and display object. The pros and cons of each of them must be examined and each of them used where best suited. This will probably give a more complex media world with fuzzy borders between what is broadcasting, packaged media and what is the on-line information society. In order to balance this, any new digital multimedia system needs to be developed with an open architecture, based on generally agreed standards and possibly follow a non-proprietary approach. IDUN, a prototype system for multimedia broadcasting, is on its way to fulfil these requirements. IDUN combines the powerful point to multi-point emission, domestic data storage and computer processing with the telecommunication network. It is feasible to introduce it in the analogue world of today but could better be utilised in a fully digital future. Some possible services are further proposed. Some of them with a tight relation to what a broadcaster already produces, which could give an evolutionary transfer to the new digital world.

  • A Video Browsing Using Fast Scene Cut Detection for an Efficient Networked Video Database Access

    Video compression technologies such as MPEG have enabled the efficient use of video data in the computer environment. However, the compressed video information still has a huge amount of data compared with the other media such as text, audio, and graphics. Therefore, it is very important to handle the video information in a networked database for the efficient use of resources like storage media. Furthermore, in the networked database, its retrieval methods including search and delivery become the key issues especially for the video information which requires a large network bandwidth. In this paper, a video browsing method using an automatic fast scene cut detection for networked video database access is described. The scene cut is defined as the scene change frame and is detected by temporal change in interframe luminance difference and chrominance correlation which are obtained from spatio-temporally scaled image directly extracted from the MPEG compressed video without any complex processing of video decoding. The detected scene change frames are further investigated to exploit the relationship between the scene cuts and are classified in order to make a hierarchical indexing. These results of detection are stored as an scene index file using the MPEG format. The simulation results are also presented for several test video sequences to show that these methods have enabled the efficient video database construction and accessing.

  • A Multi-Layer Channel Router Using Simulated Annealing

    We present a new multi-layer over-the-cell channel router for standard cell layout design using simulated annealing. This new approach, STANZA-M consists of two key features. The first key feature of our router is a new scheme for simulated annealing in which we use a cost function to evaluate both the total net-length and the channel heights, and an effective simulated annealing process by a limited range to obtain an optimal chnnel wiring in practical time. The second feature of our router is a basic layer assignment procedure in which we assign all horizontal wiring inside a channel to feasible layers by considering the height of channel including cell region with a one dimensional channel compaction process. We implemented our three-layer cannel router in C language on a Solbourne Series 5 Work Station (22 MIPS). Experimental results for benchmarks such as Deutsch's Difficult Example and MCNC's PRIMARY1 channel routing problems indicate that STANZA-M can achieve superior results compared to the conventional routers, and the process times are very fast despite the use of simulated annealing.

    A multi-stage noise-shaping (MASH) A/D converter combining an RC-integrator and a digital correction technique for high accuracy is described. Using 1.2-µm BiCMOS technology, we developed an A/D converter for digital audio with an S/N ratio of over 100 dB. This paper discusses the principles of MASH technology with an RC-integrator, the technique for correcting RC variation, and the experimental results obtained with a fabricated chip.

    A new approach to implement queues for controlling ATM switch LSI is presented. In many conventional architecture, external FIFOs are provided for each output link and used to manage the address of the buffer in an ATM switch. We reduce the number of FIFOs by using a self-timed queue with a search circuit that finds the earliest entry for each output link. Using this architecture, number of the FIFOs is reduced to 1/N, where N is the switch size. Delay priority and multicasting can be supported without doubling the number of the queues. This new queue can also be utilized as an ATM switch by itself. Evaluation chip was fabricated using 0.5-µm CMOS process technology. Inter-stage transfer speed over 500 MHz and cycle time over 125 MHz was obtained. This performance is enough for a 622-Mbps 1616 ATM Switch.

  • A Video-Rate 10-b Triple-Stage Bi-CMOS A/D Converter

    This paper describes the circuit design and experimental results of a video-rate 10-b analog-to-digital converter (ADC) suitable for consumer video products, such as high-definition TV sets. Triple-stage conversion scheme combined with two new conversion methods, "Dynamic Sliding Reference Method" and "Triangular Interpolation Method," and an internal Bi-CMOS Sample/Hold circuit have been developed. These conversion methods require no adjustment circuit to fit reference voltages between conversion stages and realize small active area. As a result, a maximum conversion frequency of 16 MHz, acceptable SNRs of 56 dB and 48 dB for 10 kHz and 8 MHz input frequency respectively and small DNLE of 0.75 LSB have been achieved. This ADC is fabricated with 1.2 µm Bi-CMOS technology and integrates very small number of bipolar transistors of 2 K on a small active area of 2.52.7 mm2 and consumes 350 mW.

    This paper presents an analysis of the control characteristics of the series resonant converter with a parallel resonant circuit, especially under parallel resonant frequency. Operations of the circuit are classified into several modes. The control characteristics are calculated using the equations derived from equivalent circuits, and are verified by the experiments. From the analysis, the mechanism of a jumping phenomenon in the closed-loop control characteristics is clarified.

    A simple solution for the right-angle H-plane waveguide double bend is obtained in analytic series form. The simultaneous equations are solved to obtain the transmission and reflection coefficients in fast convergent series forms. The numerical computations are performed to show the behaviors of the transmission coefficient versus frequency.

  • High-Speed, Small-Amplitude I/O Interface Circuits for Memory Bus Application

    High performance I/O circuits for fast memory devices such as Synchronous DRAMs were studied. For a TTL interface, the effect of capacitive loading must increase as I/O speed is increased, and signal termination is required for frequencies over 100 MHz. For this reason, industry-proposed alternative interface approaches such as GTL and CTT were investigated using experimental test devices. The results showed that open-drain type drivers have a problem; as the frequency increases, the high-level output voltage becomes degraded. In contrast, a push-pull driver T-LVTTL (Terminated Low Voltage TTL), developed as an implementation of the CTT interface specification, was found to be suitable for high-speed data transfer. A high-speed bus driver circuit connecting an impedance element in series to the stub is proposed as an application of T-LVTTL. Simulated results showed that this scheme greatly improves the signal integrity of memory bus systems; the operating frequency could very well be the highest among several schemes discussed as candidates for the post-LVTTL standard interface.

    We introduce a generalized cln grammar (gclng), a generalization of a completely linearly nested context-free grammar (clncfg), of which variables are partitioned linearly and each rule satisfies similar conditions as those of clncfg related to its partition. We show that the class of languages generated by gclng's coincides with the class of quasi-rational languages, and consider the inclusion relations between languages generated by gclng's and those generated by clncfg's.

  • Analysis of Pulse Responses of Multi-Conductor Transmission Lines by a Partitioning Technique

    This paper discusses pulse responses of multi-conductor transmission lines terminated by linear and nonlinear subnetworks. At first step, the circuit is partitioned into a linear transmission lines and nonlinear subnetworks by the substitution voltage sources. Then, the linear subnetworks are solved by a well-known phasor technique, and the nonlinear subnetworks by a numerical integration technique. The variational value at each iteration is calculated by a frequency domain relaxation method to the associated linearized time-invariant sensitivity circuit. Although the algorithm can be efficiently applied to weakly nonlinear circuits, the convergence ratio for stiff nonlinear circuits becomes very small. Hence, we recommend to introduce a compensation element which plays very important role to weaken the nonlinearity. Thus, our algorithm is very simple and can be efficiently applied to wide classes of nonlinear circuits.

    This paper presents a heuristic floorplanning method that improves the method proposed by Vijayan and Tsay. It is based on tentative insertion of constraints, that intentionally produces redundant constraints to make it possible to search in a wide range of solution space. The proposed method can reduce the total area of blocks with the removal and insertion of constraints on the critical path in both horizontal and vertical constraint graphs. Experimental results for MCNC benchmarks showed that the quality of solutions of the proposed method is better than [7],[8] by about 15% on average, and even for the large number of blocks, the proposed method keeps the high quality of solutions.

    This paper presents the results of a study made to determine the line length coverage of the high-bit-rate digital subscriber line (HDSL) present in NTT's local networks. The HDSL carries one bi-directional 784 kbit/s channel per pair and supports the digital interface at 1544kbit/s by using two cable pairs. The primary purpose of this study is to estimate the range limits for candidate transmission schemes considering line installation conditions, and to determine the most promising transmission scheme and its feasibility given the environment of NTT's local networks. Pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission schemes are compared for HDSL implementation. It is shown that 2B1Q-PAM and 16-QAM generally achieve better performance than the more complicated PAM and QAM given the presence intra-system crosstalk interference (interference between identical transmission systems). The range limits determined by inter-system crosstalk interference (interference between different transmission systems) with basic rate access (BRA) implementing a burst-mode transmission method are also estimated. This paper concludes that 2B1Q-PAM achieves the best overall performance in NTT's local networks. A feasibility study of 192-6144 kbit/s transmission is also described.

  • A Taxonomy of Mixed Reality Visual Displays

    This paper focuses on Mixed Reality (MR) visual displays, a particular subset of Virtual Reality (VR) related technologies that involve the merging of real and virtual worlds somewhere along the virtuality continuum" which connects completely real environments to completely virtual ones. Probably the best known of these is Augmented Reality (AR), which refers to all cases in which the display of an otherwise real environment is augmented by means of virtual (computer graphic) objects. The converse case on the virtuality continuum is therefore Augmented Virtuality (AV). Six classes of hybrid MR display environments are identified. However, an attempt to distinguish these classes on the basis of whether they are primarily video or computer graphics based, whether the real world is viewed directly or via some electronic display medium, whether the viewer is intended to feel part of the world or on the outside looking in, and whether or not the scale of the display is intended to map orthoscopically onto the real world leads to quite different groupings among the six identified classes, thereby demonstrating the need for an efficient taxonomy, or classification framework, according to which essential differences can be identified. The obvious' distinction between the terms real" and virtual" is shown to have a number of different aspects, depending on whether one is dealing with real or virtual objects, real or virtual images, and direct or non-direct viewing of these. An (approximately) three dimensional taxonomy is proposed, comprising the following dimensions: Extent of World Knowledge (how much do we know about the world being displayed?"), Reproduction Fidelity (how realistically' are we able to display it?"), and Extent of Presence Metaphor (what is the extent of the illusion that the observer is present within that world?").
