    A highly parallel turbo decoder for 3GPP LTE/LTE-Advanced systems is presented. It consists of 32 radix-4 soft-in/soft-out (SISO) decoders. Each SISO decoder is based on the proposed full-parallel sliding window (SW) schedule. Implemented in a 0.13 µm CMOS technology, the proposed design occupies 12.96 mm2 and achieves 1.5 Gb/s while decoding size-6144 blocks with 5.5 iterations. Compared with conventional SW schedule, the throughput is improved by 30–76% with 19.2% area overhead and negligible energy overhead.

    Ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse radar has high range resolution and permeability in a dielectric medium, and has great potential for the non-destructive inspection or early-stage detection of breast cancer. As an accurate and high-resolution imaging method for targets embedded in a dielectric medium, extended range points migration (RPM) has been developed. Although this method offers an accurate internal target image in a homogeneous media, it assumes the permittivity of the dielectric medium is given, which is not practical for general applications. Although there are various permittivity estimation methods, they have essential problems that are not suitable for clear, dielectric boundaries like walls, or is not applicable to an unknown and arbitrary shape of dielectric medium. To overcome the above drawbacks, we newly propose a permittivity estimation method suitable for various shapes of dielectric media with a clear boundary, where the dielectric boundary points and their normal vectors are accurately determined by the original RPM method. In addition, our method iteratively compensates for the scattered waveform deformation using a finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method to enhance the accuracy of the permittivity estimation. Results from a numerical simulation demonstrate that our method achieves accurate permittivity estimation even for a dielectric medium of wavelength size.

    This Letter presents a new feature named structured local binary Kirsch pattern (SLBKP) for image retrieval. Each input color image is decomposed into Y, Cb and Cr components. For each component image, eight 33 Kirsch direction templates are first performed pixel by pixel, and thus each pixel is characterized by an 8-dimenional edge-strength vector. Then a binary operation is performed on each edge-strength vector to obtain its integer-valued SLBKP. Finally, three SLBKP histograms are concatenated together as the final feature of each input colour image. Experimental results show that, compared with the existing structured local binary Haar pattern (SLBHP)-based feature, the proposed feature can greatly improve retrieval performance.

    Acoustic energy harvesters that function in environments where sound pressure is extremely high (150 dB), such as in engine rooms of aircraft, are expected to be capable of powering wireless health monitoring systems. This paper presents the power generation performance of a lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) acoustic energy harvester with a vibrating PZT diaphragm. The diaphragm had a diameter of 2 mm, consisting of Al (0.1 µm)/PZT (1 µm)/Pt (0.1 µm)/Ti (0.1 µm)/SiO2 (1.5 µm). The harvester generated a power of 510-14 W under a sound pressure level of 110 dB at the first resonance frequency of 6.28 kHz. It was found that the generated power was increased to 2.010-13 W using a sound-collecting Helmholtz resonator cone with a height of 60 mm. The cone provided a Helmholtz resonance at 5.8 kHz, and the generated power increased from 9.710-15 W to 7.310-13 W at this frequency. The cone was also effective in increasing the bandwidth of the energy harvester.

    Oriental ink painting, called Sumi-e, is one of the most distinctive painting styles and has attracted artists around the world. Major challenges in Sumi-e simulation are to abstract complex scene information and reproduce smooth and natural brush strokes. To automatically generate such strokes, we propose to model the brush as a reinforcement learning agent, and let the agent learn the desired brush-trajectories by maximizing the sum of rewards in the policy search framework. To achieve better performance, we provide elaborate design of actions, states, and rewards specifically tailored for a Sumi-e agent. The effectiveness of our proposed approach is demonstrated through experiments on Sumi-e simulation.

    The wideband noise controlling performance of the delayless subband adaptive filtering technique is affected by the group delay and in-band aliasing distortion of analysis filter banks. A method of recursive second-order cone programming is proposed to design the uniform DFT modulated analysis filter banks, with a small in-band aliasing error and low group delay. Simulation results show that the noise controlling performance is improved with small residual noise power spectra, a high noise attenuation level and fast convergence rate.

    A gate-all-around tunneling field-effect transistor (GAA TFET) with local high-k gate-dielectric and tunneling-boost n-layer based on silicon is demonstrated by two dimensional (2D) device simulation. Application of local high-k gate-dielectric and n-layer leads to reduce the tunneling barrier width between source and intrinsic channel regions. Thus, it can boost the on-current (Ion) characteristics of TFETs. For optimal design of the proposed device, a tendency of device characteristics has been analyzed in terms of the high-k dielectric length (Lhigh-k) for the fixed n-layer length (Ln-layer). The simulation results have been analyzed in terms of on- and off-current (Ion and Ioff), subthreshold swing (SS), and RF performances.

    The noise in digital images acquired by image sensors has complex characteristics due to the variety of noise sources. However, most noise reduction methods assume that an image has additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) with a constant standard deviation, and thus such methods are not effective for use with image signal processors (ISPs). To efficiently reduce the noise in an ISP, we estimate a unified noise model for an image sensor that can handle shot noise, dark-current noise, and fixed-pattern noise (FPN) together, and then we adaptively reduce the image noise using an adaptive Smallest Univalue Segment Assimilating Nucleus ( SUSAN ) filter based on the unified noise model. Since our noise model is affected only by image sensor gain, the parameters for our noise model do not need to be re-configured depending on the contents of image. Therefore, the proposed noise model is suitable for use in an ISP. Our experimental results indicate that the proposed method reduces image sensor noise efficiently.

    This paper presents a hardware design of high throughput, low latency preamble detector for 3GPP LTE physical random access channel (PRACH) receiver. The presented PRACH receiver uses the pipelined structure to improve the throughput of power delay profile (PDP) generation which is executed multiple times during the preamble detection. In addition, to reduce detection latency, we propose an instantaneous preamble detection method for both restricted and unrestricted set. The proposed preamble detection method can detect all existing preambles directly and instantaneously from PDP output while conducting PDP combining for restricted set. The PDP combining enables the PRACH receiver to detect preambles robustly even in severe Doppler effect or frequency error exist. Using proposed method, the worst case preamble detection latency time can be less than 1 ms with 136 MHz clock and the proposed PRACH receiver can be implemented with approximately 237k equivalent ASIC gates count or occupying 30.2% of xc6vlx130t FPGA device.

    The nondeterminism of message-passing communication brings challenges to program debugging, testing and fault-tolerance. This paper proposes a novel deterministic message-passing implementation (DMPI) for parallel programs in the distributed environment. DMPI is compatible with the standard MPI in user interface, and it guarantees the reproducibility of message with high performance. The basic idea of DMPI is to use logical time to solve message races and control asynchronous transmissions, and thus we could eliminate the nondeterministic behaviors of the existing message-passing mechanism. We apply a buffering strategy to alleviate the performance slowdown caused by mismatch of logical time and physical time. To avoid deadlocks introduced by deterministic mechanisms, we also integrate DMPI with a lightweight deadlock checker to dynamically detect and solve these deadlocks. We have implemented DMPI and evaluated it using NPB benchmarks. The results show that DMPI could guarantee determinism with incurring modest runtime overhead (14% on average).

    Cardinality estimation schemes of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) tags using Framed Slotted ALOHA (FSA) based protocol are studied in this paper. Not as same as previous estimation schemes, we consider tag cardinality estimation problem under not only detection errors but also capture effect, where a tag's IDentity (ID) might not be detected even in a singleton slot, while it might be identified even in a collision slot due to the fading of wireless channels. Maximum Likelihood (ML) approach is utilized for the estimation of the detection error probability, the capture effect probability, and the tag cardinality. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated under different system parameters via computer simulations to show the method's effectiveness comparing to other conventional approaches.

    With the successful adoption of link analysis techniques such as PageRank and web spam filtering, current web search engines well support “navigational search”. However, due to the use of a simple conjunctive Boolean filter in addition to the inappropriateness of user queries, such an engine does not necessarily well support “informational search”. Informational search would be better handled by a web search engine using an informational retrieval model combined with enhancement techniques such as query expansion and relevance feedback. Moreover, the realization of such an engine requires a method to prosess the model efficiently. In this paper we propose a novel extension of an existing top-k query processing technique to improve search efficiency. We add to it the technique utilizing a simple data structure called a “term-document binary matrix,” resulting in more efficient evaluation of top-k queries even when the queries have been expanded. We show on the basis of experimental evaluation using the TREC GOV2 data set and expanded versions of the evaluation queries attached to this data set that the proposed method can speed up evaluation considerably compared with existing techniques especially when the number of query terms gets larger.

  • Generalized Feed Forward Shift Registers and Their Application to Secure Scan Design

    In this paper, we introduce generalized feed-forward shift registers (GF2SR) to apply them to secure and testable scan design. Previously, we introduced SR-equivalents and SR-quasi-equivalents which can be used in secure and testable scan design, and showed that inversion-inserted linear feed-forward shift registers (I2LF2SR) are useful circuits for the secure and testable scan design. GF2SR is an extension of I2LF2SR and the class is much wider than that of I2LF2SR. Since the cardinality of the class of GF2SR is much larger than that of I2LF2SR, the security level of scan design with GF2SR is much higher than that of I2LF2SR. We consider how to control/observe GF2SR to guarantee easy scan-in/out operations, i.e., state-justification and state-identification problems are considered. Both scan-in and scan-out operations can be overlapped in the same way as the conventional scan testing, and hence the test sequence for the proposed scan design is of the same length as the conventional scan design. A program called WAGSR (Web Application for Generalized feed-forward Shift Registers) is presented to solve those problems.

    For a development of energy harvesting system, the fact of radio waves and ambient RF (Radio Frequency) sources, including passive devices along with novel circuits, are very closely related to mobile charging devices and energy storage system. The use of schottky diode and voltage multiplier circuits to express on the ambient RF sources surrounding the system is one way that has seen a sudden rise in use for energy harvesting. Practically speaking, the RF and ambient sources can be provided by active and passive devices such as inductors, capacitors, diode, etc. In this paper, we present a schottky based voltage multiplier circuits for mobile charging device which integrate the power generation module with radio wave generation module. We also discuss that multi-stage schematic, e.g., three-stage schottky diode based voltage multiplier circuits, for a continuing effort on energy harvesting system.

  • Image Retrieval with Scale Invariant Visual Phrases

    We propose a retrieval method using scale invariant visual phrases (SIVPs). Our method encodes spatial information into the SIVPs which capture translation, rotation and scale invariance, and employs the SIVPs to determine the spatial correspondences between query image and database image. To compute the spatial correspondences efficiently, the SIVPs are introduced into the inverted index, and SIVP verification is investigated to refine the candidate images returned from inverted index. Experimental results demonstrate that our method improves the retrieval accuracy while increasing the retrieval efficiency.

    This paper discusses the reduction of the amount of transmitted information for the efficient use of frequency resources in wireless feedback control systems, and clarify the effect of the reduction of the amount of transmitted information. As a typical example of the underactuated controlled object, a rotary inverted pendulum is considered. We propose a reduction method for state information fed back from the controller to the controlled object. It estimates angle or velocity state from the previous state. In addition, we propose a reduction method that temporally omits less important control information and state information. Numerical examples clarify the effect of the reduction methods on the control quality. And we show that the reduction methods achieve large reduction of the amount of transmitted information with small disadvantage of the control quality.

  • Networked Control of Uncertain Systems over Data Rate Limited and Lossy Channels

    This paper studies stabilization of uncertain systems over finite data rate and lossy channels. Limitations on data rate and packet loss probability are derived, characterized by the product of the eigenvalues of the plant. It is worth noting that even if we assume the most conservative plant dynamics, existing limitations for nominal plants are looser than those given in this paper. This fact implies that plant uncertainties cause strictly higher requirements in communication. We consider linear discrete-time systems with parametric uncertainties and employ uniform quantizers, which have the simplest quantization structure. Under the setup, a necessary condition and a sufficient condition for stability are derived. In particular, for scalar plants case, the conditions are exact. They coincide with the existing results for nominal plants as a special case and hence generalize them to the uncertain case.

    Self-triggered control is a control method that the control input and the sampling period are computed simultaneously in sampled-data control systems, and is studied in the field of networked control systems. In this paper, a new approach for self-triggered control is proposed based on the model predictive control (MPC) method. First, self-triggered MPC with delay compensation in which the delay-compensation input is introduced is newly formulated. Next, in order to efficiently solve this MPC problem, the optimal control problem with horizon one is formulated, and an approximate solution method is derived. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is shown by a numerical example.

    In order to implement complementary logic function with L-shaped tunneling field-effect transistors (TFETs), current drivability and subthreshold swing (SS) need to be improved more. For this purpose, high-k material such as hafnium dioxide (HfO2) has been used as gate dielectric rather than silicon dioxide (SiO2). The effects of device parameters on performance have been investigated and the design of L-shaped TFETs has been optimized. Finally, the performance of L-shaped TFET inverters have been compared with that of conventional TFET ones.

    First, this paper derives the prefix sum-of-products expression (PreSOP) and the number of products in a PreSOP for an interval function. Second, it derives Ψ(n,τp), the number of n-variable interval functions that can be represented with τp products. Finally, it shows that more than 99.9% of the n-variable interval functions can be represented with ⌈ n - 1 ⌉ products, when n is sufficiently large. These results are useful for a fast PreSOP generator and for estimating the size of ternary content addressable memories (TCAMs) for packet classification.
