The number of studies on adaptive antennas has greately increased in resent years in Japan. Most of these studies have sought to enhance the capacity and suppress multipath signals in wireless mobile communications. Adaptive antennas are expected to play an important role in future mobile radio systems. In this paper, we review the history and trends of adaptive antenna studies in Japan. We describe typical adaptive processing algorithms and contributions by Japanese researchers. We then introduce some applications of adaptive antennas for mobile communications. Furthermore, we discuss multi-dimensional signal processing, which is an extended version of the adaptive antenna.

As a solver in a simulator, advantages of use of a wavelet function were investigated for analysis of a dipole antenna using the Moment Method. Realization of a sparse matrix due to orthogonality and due to inherent nature of the wavelet is confirmed by observing an impedance matrix using each Daubechies' wavelet. Calculated results of the input impedance, the impedance matrix, and the current distribution are compared in variation of the wavelet in two integral equations for a dipole antenna. Use of the Daubechies' wavelet of the high number with a small matrix and a threshold in the Hallen's Integral Equation is suitable for the reduction of the matrix size and of the calculation cost.

In a mobile computing environment, the characteristics of wireless communication and host mobility are important considerations in providing an efficient payment service. Currently, most payment systems were not intended for use in a mobile environment, and as such they inherently possess some inefficient properties. In this paper, we propose a new micropayment system (AMPS), designed for use in a mobile computing environment. AMPS reduces the computational load of mobile hosts by directing operations normally performed by the client to the static portion of the network. With AMPS, a client's request for goods goes to a TTP server, called the AMPS server, using only one message. The client can also be disconnected while the AMPS server deals with the merchant, reducing communication costs and power consumption. User privacy is protected by hiding the details of the payment to the AMPS server. The AMPS server can also provide client anonymity to merchants. Another advantage of AMPS is the provision of transaction atomicity by checking goods and money before forwarding to clients or merchants, and preserving all necessary information for any possible future disputes.

The chemical stability of the constituent elements in polycrystalline Sr-Bi-Ta-O thin film with various Bi content prepared by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, that of the epitaxial films was also investigated to estimate the effect of the grain boundary in polycrystalline films. Therefore, only the Bi element drastically changed from Bi3+ state to Bi0 one by the Ar sputtering. This change increased with increasing the Ta/Bi mole ratio in the film from 0.64 to 1.67. This result was observed not only for the polycrystalline films but also for the epitaxial films, suggesting that this is the grain character not grain boundary one. The stability and the leakage character of the film strongly depend on the constituent of the film.

In distributed network systems, it is one of the most important problems how to assign the files to servers in view of cost and delay. It is obvious that there is a trading-off relationship between costs and delays in these systems. In order to evaluate the optimization that the total cost is minimized subject to the total delay, we have presented the Optimal File Allocation Model as 0-1 integer programming, and have investigated the general characteristics in distributed systems. In this model, we have introduced many cost and delay parameters to evaluate the total cost and delay in the system more exactly. In constructing practical systems, it is necessary to investigate the weight and the contribution of each parameter to the total cost. It is very useful to show how to estimate cost and delay parameters on the basis of this analysis. In this paper, we analyze the sensitivity of these parameters and make clear the influence between principal parameters.

An AGC Applebaum array, which is a modified Applebaum array employing an automatic gain controller (AGC), is proposed. When the eigenvalues of the input covariance matrix of an array system are spread by orders of magnitude, conventional adaptive arrays are unable to remove all the interference signals quickly. The proposed array increases the cross-correlation between the low-power interference signals at the array input and output through the use of an AGC block in the feedback loop. As a result, the weight vector is adapted for the removal of both low-power and high-power interference signals. Computer simulations were performed to demonstrate that the proposed array can produce high output signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) with a fast convergence speed.

A 2-step deposition technique was introduced in the heteroepitaxial growth of barium titanate (BaTiO3) thin films. Heteroepitaxial BaTiO3 films were prepared on a SrRuO3/SrTiO3 substrate by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering with three kinds of deposition method: low RF-power deposition, 2-step deposition, and high power deposition. The crystallographic and ferroelectric properties were evaluated for the heteroepitaxial films. When the epitaxial capacitor was prepared by the 2-step deposition technique, the ferroelectric remanent polarization, 2Pr, was maximized. The optimized deposition condition to improve the crystal quality is discussed in terms of damage and diffusion, which could be introduced into the oxide films during the epitaxial growth, and controlled by the RF-power and deposition time, respectively.

We demonstrate all-optical clock recovery at 160 Gbit/s by injection locking of a 10 GHz mode-locked laser diode. Effective locking in a range of 10 MHz is observed for average input powers around -10 dBm. The timing jitter is analyzed for data rates between 10 Gbit/s and 160 Gbit/s. Beyond 40 Gbit/s, the high frequency timing jitter of the slave laser becomes of prime importance and has to be taken into account since it degrades the performance of a subsequent receiver. Increasing power penalties are found, especially beyond 80 Gbit/s.

A behavioral model for ferroelectric capacitors is developed. There are two requirements for the circuit simulation model; one is to reproduce the hysteretic behavior of the polarization under arbitrary voltage history, and the other is to describe the time dependence of polarization change. A parallel element model has been proposed to meet the first requirement. This model reproduces the minor loops of the hysteresis by assuming that the ferroelectric capacitor consists of the parallel capacitors of different polarization and coercive voltages. In order to add the function to describe the time dependence of the polarization change, we propose a method of measuring the switching response for individual parallel elements and the model which describes the response. In the measurement, the voltage applied to the capacitor is raised in two steps. After the first step, the voltage is kept at an intermediate level for a period of time, then raised again to the final level and the polarization change was recorded as a function of time. Because the capacitor elements with the coercive voltage lower than the intermediate level complete switching during the first step, the polarization change of the whole capacitor during the second step is attributed to the capacitor elements with the coercive voltage higher than the intermediate level. This procedure is repeated with changing the intermediate level, and the switching response of each capacitor element is obtained by taking the finite differences between the adjacent sets of data. The measurement on a sol-gel derived SrBi2Ta2O9 capacitor revealed that the switching time depended only on the difference between the applied voltage and the coercive voltage of each capacitor element. The time dependence of the polarization change is implemented to the model by inserting a nonlinear resistor in series with each capacitor, which reproduces the polarization switching under arbitrary voltage change without any fitting parameters.

Tree task structures occur frequently in many applications where parallelization may be desirable. We present a formal treatment of non-preemptively scheduling task trees on distributed memory multiprocessors and show that the fundamental problems of scheduling (i) a task tree in absence of any inter-task communication on a fixed number of processors and (ii) a task tree with inter-task communication on an unbounded number of processors are NP-complete. For task trees that satisfy certain constraints, we present an optimal scheduling algorithm. The algorithm is shown optimal over a wider set of task trees than previous works.

The model to calculate high frequency C-V characteristics of ferroelectric capacitors that have not been modeled yet is presented. At first, P-V hysteresis model necessary to calculate C-V characteristics is improved by introducing two modification factors and by comparing with experimental results. Then, other parameters to express high frequency C-V characteristic of the metal/ferroelectric/metal structure are derived, in which the response for AC signal input is considered. Finally, it has been shown that these models predict well the C-V hysteresis shapes of the MFIS and the MFMIS structures.

A low loss magnetic plate positioned near an antenna is proposed to increase radiation efficiency of cellular phones. This magnetic plate is used to control the nearby magnetic field around the cellular phone's antenna, and this field controlling is shown to be effective for the improvement of radiation efficiency and far-field pattern. As for the material design of the plate, a magnetic plate having high µr and low µr" (complex relative permeability: µr = µr - j µr") is found to be effective for achieving high performance. In our sample fabrication, a low loss magnetic sample with µr = 5.7 - j 0.7 at 900 MHz is realized. It is demonstrated that this low loss sample contributes to increased efficiency and improved far-field characteristics.

Access control plays an important role in the area of information security, which guarantees that any access to data is authorized. Hierarchical access control is a special access control model in distributed environment, in which each user protects his local data using a secret key; moreover, for any two related users ui and uj, ui can access uj's data if, and only if, ui's priority is higher than uj. Therefore, there should be a way for ui to obtain the secret key of uj if ui's priority is higher than uj. This paper presents an efficient solution to the problem. A special kind of function called secure filter is used as the building block of the proposed solution. In the solution, an authorized user can acquire correct keys efficiently and securely via secure filters. The proposed solution is also well-performed while inserting/deleting users, injecting/removing relations, and changing secret keys. Especially, only deleting users and removing relations will change some keys in the system, other operations can be performed freely without affecting other keys in the system; only secure filters need to be modified in these cases.

Recently, traffic of real-time communication such as video or IP telephony is increasing in Internet. Low delay and low jitter communication is required to perform these kinds of services smoothly. CoS (Class of Services) scheme which controls traffic by the class unit such as application is currently being paid attention. It is considered to be efficient control mechanism which utilizes characteristics of Internet traffic. One of effective methods for queueing control to realize CoS is CBQ (Class Based Queueing). Efficient and dynamic bandwidth allocation can be realized by using CBQ. However, CBQ mechanism is not necessarily efficient for real-time communication. In this paper, We clarify the effect of dynamic CBQ control scheme on real-time communication by experiment. In addition, we show that low delay and low jitter communication is possible by reducing unnecessary control overhead which is caused by traffic change. We propose new mechanism which changes bandwidth allocation of CBQ dynamically suppressing non real-time traffic and giving priority to real-time traffic on using bandwidth. We also show its efficiency by using real system.

In this paper we propose a new algorithm to approximate the solution of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation by using a three layer neural network for affine and general nonlinear systems, and the state feedback controller can be obtained which make the closed-loop systems be suboptimal within a restrictive training domain. Matrix calculus theory is used to get the gradients of training error with respect to the weight parameter matrices in neural networks. By using pattern mode learning algorithm, many examples show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

We describe a simplified receiver structure having several receiving antennas (i.e., an adaptive array antenna system) and using time-division-multiplexing (TDM) signal processing. Three simplified receiver structures were investigated for use in the antenna system. To confirm the feasibility of using a TDM receiver, both a TDM receiver and a conventional adaptive array receiver were constructed for testing. In our proposed system, several repetitions of the constant modulus algorithm (CMA) are used to reduce co-channel interference (CCI). The frame format used for both receivers was the same as that of the personal handy phone system in Japan. The laboratory testing was done using a fading simulator to enable measurement of the bit error rate. The results are very promising and show the feasibility of the TDM receiver.

A great deal of effort has been concentrated on the longitudinal control for the collision avoidance of moving vehicles. In an emergency as well as in a normal situation, however, the steering control can be a very effective alternative as observed in the practice of manual evasive driving. In the reported methods of steering control, it is found that the dynamic motions of the neighboring vehicles are often ignored, which may result in some danger of 2nd collision. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the surrounding traffic situation to prevent 2nd collision that can occur just after escaping from the 1st collision situation. In this paper, we tackle the collision avoidance problem when steering actuation control is allowed in consideration of the dynamic motion of the neighboring vehicles. Specifically, a hierarchical control scheme is suggested as a feasible solution, and the proposed system is verified via simulation using a software simulator called DevACAS (DEVeolper of Active Collision Avoidance System), which we have developed.

In this paper, we propose a high-speed multiplier-free realization using ROM's to store the results of coefficient scalings in combination with higher signal rate and pipelined operations, without the need of hardware multipliers. By varying some parameters, the proposed structure provides various combinations of hardware and clock speed (or throughput). Examples are given comparing the proposed realization with the distributed arithmetic (DA) realization and direct-form realization with power-of-two coefficients. Results show that with proper choices of the parameters the proposed structure achieves a faster processing speed with less hardware, as compared to the DA realization, while it is much faster than the direct-form with slightly more hardware.
