This paper proposes a low distortion technique which reduces transmitter intermodulation. It is shown that one of the third order transmitter intermodulation products generated can be reduced by using a parallel amplifier configuration which includes a 45 divider and a 45 combiner. It is already known that the other third order transmitter intermodulation product can be reduced by using a parallel amplifier configuration using 90 hybrids. Thus, all of the third order transmitter intermodulation can be reduced by combining these configurations. This paper also shows the experimental results obtained with a parallel amplifier using 90 hybrids and one using a 45 divider and combiner in the K-band. The spectra of these amplifiers are compared, and it is found that third order transmitter intermodulation can be reduced by more than 29 dB in the parallel amplifier using the 45 divider and combiner.

An advanced intelligent network (IN) provides service management along with telecommunication services, and has a two-layer architecture, i.e., a transmission layer and an intelligent layer. An advanced IN's programmability is achieved by a service-independent platform of nodes in the intelligent layer, and service-dependent software called logic programs. In contrast to telecommunication services, models for service management have not yet been established. This paper presents both execution and specification models for service management. The execution model is composed of three hierarchies that apply to various kinds of management operation. The specification model has the capability to define the details of data items. The specification language for service management is also proposed. Simulation on dynamic SQL based DBMS solved that; (1) Logic programs for service management can be made small size on the model, and (2) To provide efficient database operation, programmability must be enhanced if service management includes table with variable number of field operation.

This paper describes the effectiveness of stream-oriented data-driven scheme for achieving autonomous fault management of hyper-distributed systems such as networks based on the Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture (TINA). TINA, whose specifications are in the finalizing phase within TINA-Consortium, is aiming at achieving interoperability and reusability of telecom applications software and independent of underlying technologies. However, to actually implement TINA network, it is essential to consider the technology constraints. Especially autonomous fault management at run-time is crucial for distributed network environment because centralized control using global information is very difficult. So far many works have been done on so-called off-line management but runtime management of service failure seems immature. This paper proposes introduction of stream-oriented data-driven processors to the autonomous fault management at runtime in TINA based distributed network environment. It examines the features of distributed network applications and technology requirements to achieve fault management of those distributed applications such as effective multiprocessing of surveillance, testing, reconfiguration in addition to ordinary processing.

This paper proposes a prediction method for non-stationary time series data with time varying parameters. A modular structured type neural network is newly introduced for the purpose of grasping the changing property of time varying parameters. This modular structured neural network is constructed by the hierarchical combination of each neural network (NNT: Neural Network for Prediction of Time Series Data) and a neural network (NNW: Neural Network for Prediction of Weights). Next, we propose a reasonable method for determination of the length of the local stationary section by using the additive learning ability of neural networks. Finally, the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method are confirmed through simulation and actual experiments.

An effective learning method for the fuzzy ARTMAP in the recognition of noisy input patterns is presented. the weight vectors of the system are updated using the weighted average of the noisy input vector and the weight vector itself. This method leads to stable learning and prevents the excessive update of the weight vectors which may cause performance degradation. Simulation results show that the proposed method not only reduces the generation of spurious categories, but aloso increases the recognition ratio in the noisy environment.

In audio-frequency magnetotelluric surveys, electromagnetic radiation from worldwide thunderstorm activity is used as an energy source for geophysical exploration. Owing to its origin, such a signal is inherently transient and short lived. Therefore, special care should be taken in the detection and processing of this transient signal because the interval of time between two successive transient events contains almost no information as far as the audio frequency magnetotellurist is concerned. In this paper, a wavelet transform detection, processing and analysis technique is developed. A complex-compactly-supported wavelet, known as the Morlet wavelet, is selected as the mother wavelet. With the Morlet wavelet, lightning transients can be easily identified in the noisy recordings and the magnetotelluric impedance tensor can be computed directly in the wavelet transform domain. This scheme has been tested on real data collected in the archipelago of Svalbard, Norway as well as on five sets of synthetic data contaminated with various kinds of noise. The results show the superior performance of the wavelet transform transient detection and analysis technique.

In this paper, we propose a new strategy of estimating correlation dimensions in combination with the method of surrogate data, which is a kind of statistical control usually introduced to avoid spurious estimates of nonlinear statistics, such as fractal dimensions, Lyapunov exponents and so on. In the case of analyzing time series with the method of surrogate data, it is desirable to decide values of estimated nonlinear statistics of the original data and surrogate data sets as exactly as possible. However, when dimensional analysis is applied to possible attractors reconstructed from real time series, it is very dangerous to decide a single value as the estimated dimensions and desirable to analyze its scaling property for avoiding spurious estimates. In order to solve this defficulty, a dimension estimator algorithm and the method of surrogate data are combined by introducing Monte Carlo hypothesis testing. In order to show effectiveness of the new strategy, firstly artificial time series are analyzed, such as the Henon map with additive noise, filtered random numbers and filtered random numbers transformed by a static monotonic nonlinearity, and then experimental time series are also examined, such as wolfer's sunspot numbers and the fluctuations in a farinfrared laser data.

This letter describes our DFB-LD module for use in WDM optical access networks. We realized an isolator-free DFB-LD module with a thermo-electric cooler in aim of stabilizing the emission wavelength for WDM systems. Silicon waferboard technology was employed to achieve simple assembly and small size of the module. This small size contributed to low TEC power. Our fabricated module demonstrated low-noise and stable emission wavelength characteristics under 156 Mbit/s pseudo random modulation.

In bandlimited QPSK and QAM transmission systems, phase jitter occurs in the output of a carrier recovery circuit that uses a fourth-power multiplier. To analyze the phase jitter, an exact expression was derived for the autocorrelation function and power spectral density for the case in which bandlimited Gaussian noise and a QPSK or QAM signal with random modulation and arbitrary waveform are simultaneously applied to the fourth-power multiplier. Using this expression, the rms phase jitter of the recovered carrier in root-cosine-rolloff transmission systems for QPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM and 256QAM was calculated. It was shown that the conventional theories for rectangular waveforms are special cases of our theory.

A new linearization technique of a transconductor is presented. The linearization is realized by using a differential current amplifier with an emitter-coupled pair. A specific value of the linearization parameter gives a maximally flat or an equiripple characteristic. Deviations from the theoretical characteristic can be adjusted by tuning the tail current of the emitter-coupled pair. The proposed technique is demonstrated by PSPICE simulation.

We present a very fast method for calculating an inverse filter for audio reproduction system. The proposed method of FFT-based inverse filter design, which combines the well-known principles of least squares optimization and regularization, can be used for inverting systems comprising any number of inputs and outputs. The method was developed for the purpose of designing digital filters for multi-channel sound reproduction. It is typically several hundred times faster than a conventional steepest descent algorithm implemented in the time domain. A matrix of causal inverse FIR (finite impulse response) filters is calculated by optimizing the performance of the filters at a large number of discrete frequencies. Consequently, this deconvolution method is useful only when it is feasible in practice to use relatively long inverse filters. The circular convolution effect in the time domain is controlled by zeroth-order regularization of the inversion problem. It is necessary to set the regularization parameter β to an appropriate value, but the exact value of β is usually not critical. For single-channel systems, a reliable numerical method for determining β without the need for subjective assessment is given. The deconvolution method is based on the analysis of a matrix of exact least squares inverse filters. The positions of the poles of those filters are shown to be particularly important.

Some kind of practical problems such as security verification of cryptographic protocols can be described as a problem to accomplish a given purpose by using limited operations and limited materials only. To model such problems in a natural way, unification problems under constrained substitutions have been proposed. This paper is a collection of results on the decidability and the computational complexity of a syntactic unification problem under constrained substitutions. A number of decidable, undecidable, tractable and intractable results of the problem are presented. Since a unification problem under constrained substitutions can be regarded as an order-sorted unification problem with term declarations such that the number of sorts is only one, the results presented in this paper also indicate how the intractability of order-sorted unification problems is reduced by restecting the number of sorts to one.

Using object-oriented techniques, one can build software that models the real world more closely. In objectoriented analysis and design, two types of closely interrelated models have been built which specify the static structure and the dynamic behavior of objects. Much work based on those models deals with how to use inheritance to support reuse and easy extension more precisely. In this paper, we are concerned with the dynamic aspects of objects, and define a behavior inheritance relationship between a class and its subclass. We present a set of derivation operations based on the incremental design of the behavior model. The operations preserve the behavior inheritance relationship between classes. The result makes a theoretical base for making new classes by reusing the existing classes in objectoriented system development.

Extremely compact multi-mode interference (MMI) devices using central wide-angle coupling of input and output waveguides are proposed. It is shown that MMI can be used to change the propagation direction of light without the need for corner mirrors or bent waveguides. The concept can also be used for very compact power splitters which are even smaller than conventional MMI power splitters. Coupling between waveguides at wide angles is discussed and a number of regularities are found. The results can be useful for the design of more compact integrated circuits by a reduction of the number of bent waveguides which usually take up the largest part of the area of a photonic integrated circuit.

This paper describes the use of direct wafer bonding technique to implement the novel concept of "free-material and free-orientation integration" which we propose. The technique is applied for various wafer combinations of an In-Ga-As-P material system with lattice- and orientation-mismatches. The properties of the bonded structures are studied in terms of the crystalline and electrical characterization. The high crystalline quality of the bonded structures with those mismatches is proved by transmission electron microscopy, and good electrical conduction was attained in some bonded structures of InP and GaAs. (001) InP-based 1.55-µm wavelength lasers are fabricated on (110) GaAs substrate by direct wafer bonding. The light-current characteristics of the lasers are almost identical to those of lasers fabricated on (001) InP and (001) GaAs substrates, while the turn-on voltage is a little bit higher due to the higher barrier height at the bonded interface. The practicability in those lasers are also examined. Furthermore, we show direct wafer bonding of a (001) InP-based structure and a (110) Si substrate with a GaAs buffer layer, aligning the cleavage planes of the InP and the Si. The results demonstrate the remarkable feasibility of using the direct wafer bonding technique to obtain integrated structures of material- and orientation-mismatched wafers with satisfactory quality.

Butt-joint waveguide couplings are fabricated for use in InP-based photonic integration, and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and optical transmission measurements. Several parameters have been optimized in the characterization study: size and shape of the mask protecting the first waveguide layer during butt-joint regrowth, and the crystallographic direction of the butt-joint interface. The studies show that high-quality butt-joints having negligible optical loss can be made with good fabrication tolerance. Using the optimized butt-joint, DBR-type, gain-clamped SOAs have been fabricated which are free of internal excess reflections. A constant optical gain of 21 dB is obtained up to a signal output power of 25 mW. The devices show CATV grade linearity in a 77 channel CATV linearity test at a distortion level of -55 dB below carrier.

In the measurement of actual random phenomenon, the observed data often contain the fuzziness due to the existence of confidence limitation in measuring instruments, permissible error in experimental data, some practical simplification of evaluation procedure and a quantized error in digitized observation. In this study, by introducing the well-known fuzzy theory, a state estimation method based on the above fuzzy observations is theoretically proposed through an establishment of wide sense digital filter under the actual situation of existence of the background noise in close connection of the inverse problem. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method are experimentally confirmed by applying it to the actual fuzzy data observed in an acoustic environment.

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are required for future optical communication systems, because various optical components need to be compactly integrated in one-chip configurations with a small number of optical alignment points. Bandgap energy controlled selective metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) is a breakthrough technique for the fabrication of PICs because this technique enables the simultaneous formation of waveguides for various optical components in one-step growth. Directly formed waveguides on a mask-patterned substrate can be obtained without using conventional mesa-etching of the semiconductor layers. The waveguide width is precisely controlled by the mask pattern. Therefore, high device uniformity and yield are expected. Since we proposed and demonstrated this technique in 1991, various PICs have been reported. Using electroabsorption modulator integrated distributed feedback laser diodes, 2.5 Gb/s-550 km transmission experiments have been successfully conducted. Another advantage of the selective MOVPE technique is the capability to form narrow waveguide layers. We have demonstrated a polarization-insensitive semiconductor optical amplifier that consists of a selectively formed narrow (less than 1 µm wide) bulk active layer. For a four-channel array, a chip gain of more than 20 dB and a gain difference between TE and TM inputs of less than 1 dB were obtained. We have also reported an optical switch matrix and an optical transceiver PIC for access optical networks. By using a low-loss optical waveguide, a 0 dB fiber-to-fiber gain for the 14 switch matrix and 0 dBm fiber output power from the 1.3 µm transceiver PIC were obtained. In this paper, the selective MOVPE technique and its applications to various kinds of PICs are discussed.
