  • Multiple DmB1C/DmB1M Coding Scheme for High-Speed Optical Multiplex Transmission

    This paper describes a new multiple DmB1C (Differential m Binary 1 Complement insertion) /DmB1M (Differential m Binary with 1 Mark insertion) coding scheme for high-speed optical multiplex transmission. The coding scheme has the characteristics of small consecutive identical digits and a good balance between marks and spaces. Furthermore, it has also good synchronization characteristics and higher flexibility for extension to high capacity transmission than the conventional mB1C or DmB1M coding schemes. We describe a design methodology for a multiplex transmission system using the proposed coding scheme, and verify the characteristics of the proposed coding scheme using an experimental setup of a 2.8 Gbit/s serial optical interconnection circuit, which has 16 parallel 156 Mbit/s inputs. The coding scheme realizes transmission systems with simple analog circuit configuration, and small digital circuit complexity with wide dynamic range and good mark ratio tolerance.

  • IP Mobility Support with IP-Squared (IP2) Encapsulation Technique

    This paper proposes a protocol to support mobility in the Internet with a new encapsulation technique. IP-squared (IP2). A basic idea to support mobility is as follows; 1) to define two IP addresses for each mobile host that indicate the host itself and its geographical location (logical and geographical identifiers), 2) to maintain an association of the logical identifier with the geographical identifier and 3) to continue communications between hosts by converting their logical identifiers to the corresponding geographical identifiers dynamically wherever they migrate. The association is called mobility binding. A goal of IP2 is to propose a mobility support feature which can simultaneously realize efficient routing paths to mobile hosts and less control traffics to maintain the mobility bindings into the current Internet Protocol without any modifications to both the conventional protocols and nodes. IP2 forms the efficient routing paths by enabling intermediate nodes to process the encapsulated datagrams. The key technique for this feature is a new header detection algorithm based on CRC checksum calculation and an effective usage of a header structure. Percentage of efficient routing paths can be adaptively controlled, depending on dispositions of the nodes which can en -and de capsulate datagrams appropriately based on the detection algorithm and the mobility bindings. The mobility binding must be updated whenever a mobile host migrates to another network. IP2 adopts an updating scheme combining self refreshment and on demand updating modes with taking a mechanism to form the efficient routing paths into considerations. It is shown that IP2 can acheive both an efficient routing path formation and a low traffic for mobility binding maintenance through analytical evaluations.

  • Design of Two-Dimensional Periodically Time-Variant Digital Filters

    This paper discusses a design method for two-dimensional (2-D) periodically time-variant digital filters (PTVDFs) whose filter coefficients vary periodically. First, 2-D periodicities for a variation of filter cefficients are considered, from which two and four-phase variations of coefficients are shown to be suitable for practical applications. Then, the input-output relation (transfer function) for 2-D separable-denominator (SD) PTV DFs is derived, which results in a linear combination of the baseband input signal and its modulated versions. Finally, in order ro approximate given filter specifications, the structure for 2-D SD PTV DFs is given and a design method is proposed. It is shown that, compared with the 2-D SD time-invariant DFs, approximation error can be reduced with the proposed SD PTV DFs.

    This paper describes the characteristics of a one dimensional narrow-wall slotted waveguide array with a single-layer linear-to-circular polarization converter consisting of a dipole array. An external boundary value problem of one slot and three dipoles, which approximates the mutual coupling between the dipole array and an edge slot extending over three faces of a rectangular waveguide, is formulated and analyzed by the method of moments; design of polarization conversion is conducted for this model as a unit element. If every unit element has perfect circular polarization, grating lobes appear in the array pattern due to the alternating slot angle: these are suppressed in this paper by changing the dipole angle and degrading the axial ratio of the unit element. The validity of the design is confirmed by the measurements. The dipole array has negligible effects upon slot impedance; the polarization conversion for existing narrow-wall slotted arrays is realized by add-on dipole array.

  • Complex Permittivity Measurement at Pseudo Microwave Frequency Using a Dielectric-Plate-Loaded Cavity Resonator

    This paper describes a nondestructive measurement method for complex permittivity of dielectric plates at 2 GHz, using a cylindrical cavity resonator. The resonator is divided into two parts at the center. Two dielectric plates are symmetrically loaded around the center of the cavity. These plates have high permittivity of 45. A dielectric plate specimen is clamped with these halves. The values of relative permittivity ε and loss tangent tanδ of the specimen are obtained from the resonant frequency and unloaded Q-value of TE011 mode. Measured results of various materials are compared with those values obtained at 3 and 10 GHz by other cavity resonator method. An edge effect is taken into account by a reference method, using measurement data of a sapphire plate. The errors of the present method are smaller than 1% and 2-310-5 for ε and tanδ, respectively.

  • An Evaluation Method for CRT Moire Patterns by Visibility Estimation and Image Simulation

    The high resolution CRT displays used for computer monitor and high performance TV often produce a pattern of bright and dark stripes on the screen called a moire pattern. The elimination of the moire is an important consideration in the CRT design. In this paper, we propose a method for evaluating a moire pattern based on the measurement data of the electron beam distribution. (1) We describe a mathematical expression of the process whereby a moire pattern is produced. By applying the electron beam measurement data into the formulae, precise value of the period and the contrast of a moire are calculated from the actual data of the electron beam profile and the distribution of apertures of the shadow mask. (2) The visibility of the moire is evaluated by plotting the calculation results on the contrastperiod plane, which consists of visible and invisible moire pattern regions based on experimental results of the psychological tests. (3) In addition to the analysis by calculation, the visibility of moire patterns can be visually examined by simulating moire patterns using the same data as above calculation. Since not only fundamental design parameters such as a shadow mask pitch and a scanning line pitch but also details of an electron beam profile such as a distortion or an asymmetry can be examined, a newly developed method contributes the efficiency of the CRT design.

  • Parameter Estimation and Restoration for Motion Blurred Images

    The parameter estimation problem of point spread function is one of the most challenging and important task for image restoration. A new method for the parameter estimation in the case of motion blur is presented here. It is based on the principle that the power spectrum of the motion blurred image contains periodical minima relevant directly to the motion derection and length. Though the principle is very simple and effective in certain cases, the direct use of it may lead to poor performance an the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gets lower. To improve the estimation accuracy, by analyzing image noise effect on the detection of the minima, we propose a method to greatly reduce spectral noise, and give the lowest allowed SNR at which the minima may still be identified reliably. We also estimate the power spectrum of the original image, which is a must for the Wiener restoration filter, from the noisy blurred image based on a noncasual autoregressive model. Once above parameters are decided, the Wiener filter is used to restore the noisy blurred image. Our method is very practical; no parameter needs to be known a priori, or to be adjusted manually to fit into various application problems. The proposed method is finally applied to systhesized and real motion blurred images to demonstrate its effectiveness.

  • Recursive Orthonormal Wavelet Bases with Vanishing Moments

    This paper presents a new method for constructing orthonormal wavelet bases with vanishing moments based on general IIR filters. It is well-known that orthonormal wavelet bases can be generated by paraunitary filter banks. Then, synthesis of orthonormal wavelet bases can be reduced to design of paraunitary filter banks. From the orthonormality and regularity of wavelets, we derive some constraints to IIR filter banks, and investigate relations between the constrained filter coefficients and its zeros and poles. According to these relations, we can apply Remez exchange algorithm in stopband directly, and formulate the design problem in the form of an eigenvalue problem. Therefore, a set of filter coefficients can be easily computed by solving the eigenvalue problem, and the optimal filter coefficients with an equiripple response can be obtained after applying an iteration procedure. The proposed procedure is computationally efficient, and the number of vanishing moments can be arbitrarily specified.

    Overview of Cell Switch Router (CSR) and the CSR prototype system are described. CSR can simultaneously support both connection oriented IP flows and connectionless IP flows. CSR contains cell switch fabric and IP packet switch fabric to achieve high throughput IP forwarding. IP packets are forwarded either through a cut-thru packet transmission, in which packet are forwarded without reassembling IP packet nor IP header processing, or through a conventional hop-by-hop IP packet forwarding. This paper describes and proposes the mechanism to forward the connectionless IP packet flows at the CSR. A CSR prototype system has been developed. The CSR prototype system uses PVC connections to transfer the IP packets. With the CSR prototype system, we can make sure that CSR system can achieve a high throughput, i.e., 2.4 Gbps aggregated throughput. For end-to-end TCP/IP packet transmission, more than 90 Mbps can be achieved and realtime video transmission (30 Mbps video) can be achieved.

  • Mobility Support with Authentic Firewall Traversal in IPv6

    This paper proposes a protocol to support mobile hosts in IPv6 by introducing a new addressing architecture and a new hop-by-hop option. This protocol also allows a mobile host to communicate with another host via a firewall machine which drops packets from untrustworthy hosts. The new addressing scheme is based on the separation of the identifier and the location of a mobile host. This is a straightforward implementation of the basic concept of VIP, a protocol providing seamless mobility in IPv4. The new hop-by-hop option of IPv6 allows a firewall machine to authenticate the source host of the forwarded packet with negligible overhead. The author plans to implement this protocol on several operating systems in the near future.

  • A New Approach for Datapath Synthesis of Application Specific Instruction Processor

    In this paper, a systematic method which synthesizes the datapath of Application Specific Instruction Processor (ASIP) is proposed. The behavioral description of application is written in instruction code defined on abstract machine. We introduce register transfer graph (RTG) to represent instructions and synthesis constraint tree to select the combinations of synthesis constraints to explore design space along area and performance axis. The high performance is achieved by scheduling micro-operations of instruction in out-of-order. The practical datapath is synthesized by considering connection geometry as well as the maximum utilization of hardware resources. To reduce connection cost, data transfer paths are minimized by replacing an inefficient data transfer path with its bypass route. The feasibility of the proposed synthesis method is verified with several experimental instruction sequences.

    This paper describes a design technique of perfect reconstruction (PR) two-channel IIR filter bank. M.J.T. Smith et al., gave two types of PR IIR filter bank systems. One is the system such that the analysis and synthesis filters with nonlinear phase are implemented with all-pass polyphase filters and satisfy the power complementary condition approximately. The other is the system such that all the analysis and synthesis filters have liner phase responses and do not satisfy the power complementary condition. To improve coding performance, we propose a filter bank system such that all the analysis and synthesis filters have linear phase and satisfy the power complementary condition approximately.

  • Assessment of Fatigue by Pupillary Response

    This study was conducted to assess the relationship between fatigue and pupillary responses. Pupillary responses, ECG and blood pressure were measured for 24 hours every 30 min in 8 subjects. A questionnaire was used to rate subjective feeling of fatigue. Twenty-four hours were divided equally into four 6-hour blocks. Subjective feeling of fatigue increased markedly in the fourth block, and the difference in subjective fatigue between fourth and first blocks was significant. Of nine pupillary responses, the pupil diameter was found to decrease with time. With respect to the function of the autonomic nervous system such as heart rate, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure, only heart rate was found to be sensitive to the increased subjective feeling of fatigue. A significant difference was found in the mean pupil diameter and mean heart rate between the last and first blocks. This result indicates that pupil diameter is related to fatigue and can be used to assess fatigue. Possible implications for fatigue assessment are discussed.

    This paper proposes the use, in integrated wireless systems, of the Reserved Idle Signal Multiple Access with Collision Resolution (R-ISMA/CR) protocol for applications in future multimedia mobile communications. It is applied to the integrated voice and data wireless system. Moreover, the consideration is made of the integrated voice and the low-bit video wireless system in R-ISMA/CR. To integrate video we employed not only a packed discard for video packets when the video packet delay is more than a threshold value, but also the connection packet (CP) technique for improving the channel utilization. Finally the integration of voice, data, and low-bit-video wireless system in R-ISMA/CR is considered. The performance are evaluated mainly by simulations.

  • Quasi-Optimum Multiuser Detector Using Co-Channel Interference Cancellation Technique in Asynchronous DS/CDMA

    In this paper, we propose a quasi-optimum multiuser detector using co-channel interference cancellation technique in an asynchronous code-division multiple-access communication system, and evaluate its performance by computer simulations. In the proposed detector, maximum likelihood sequence estimation is performed to compare the original received signal with replicas of the signal which are produced from the demodulation data bit sequence of a co-channel interference canceller. In several conditions, the proposed detector is compared with the co-channel interference canceller, and it is shown that the average bit error rate characteristics of the propose detector are improved considerably.

  • Soft Decision Viterbi Decoding and Self-Interference Cancellation for High Speed Radio Communication by Parallel Combinatory CDMA

    We propose a soft decision Viterbi decoding scheme and a self-interference cancellation method applicable to a Parallel Combinatory CDMA (PC-CDMA) system. In this decoding scheme, branch metric is calculated for every bit by weighting the output levels of the PC-CDMA correlators so as to enable an effective soft decision capability to the system. The effectivity of this scheme is then further enhanced by the use of a simple pseudo-random bit interleaving scheme. Moreover, to increase the capacity of the PC-CDMA system, we propose a simple self-interference cancellation method for self-induced cross-correlation arising from the multipath environment. This further enhances the efficacy of the decoding scheme because the false contributions of the self-induced cross-correlation component are removed from the branch metric prior to soft decision Viterbi decoding. Finally, we simulated a possible PC-CDMA system with a user data rate of 1.92Mbps, transmitting it at a chip rate of 3.84Mcps and at 7.68Mcps under a multipath-Rayleigh fading interference environment. For a chip rate of 7.68Mcps, BER after Viterbi decoding is less than 3.2e-7 even without the use of interference cancellation. For a chip rate of 3.84Mcps, BER after Viterbi decoding with interference cancellation is 1.0e-4.

  • Power Optimization for Data Compressors Based on a Window Detector in a 5454 Bit Multiplier

    Currently, a typical 5454 bit multiplier is composed of a parallel structured architecture with the encoder block to implement the Modified Booth's algorithm, a block to implement the data compression, and a 108-bit Carry Look-Ahead (CLA) adder. The key idea in the present paper is a power optimization for the data compressors based on a Window Detector. The role of the Window Detector is detecting the input data, activating a selected operation unit, choosing the optimized output data, and driving the next stage. It can reduce the power consumption drastically because only one selected operation unit (a Window) is activated. The power consumption of the proposed data compressors is reduced by about 33%, compared with that of the conventional multiplier; while the propagation delay is nearly same as that of the conventional one. Furthermore, the power consumption dependent on the input data transition is shown for both the static CMOS logic and the nMOS pass transistor logic.

  • Surface Tunnel Transistors with Multiple Interband Tunnel Junctions

    New functional surface tunnel transistors (STTs) with multiple interband-tunnel-junctions in a symmetric source-to-drain structure are proposed to reduce the number of fabrication steps and to increase functionality. These devices have p+/n+ interband tunnel junctions in series between a p+ source and a p+ drain through n+ channels. We successfully fabricated GaAs-based multiple-junction STTs (MJ-STTs) using molecular-beam epitaxy regrowth. This fabrication method eliminates the need for two of the photo-masks in the conventional process for asymmetric planar STTs. In the preliminary experiments using multiple-junction p+/n+ diodes, we found that the peak-voltage increment in negative-differential-resistance (NDR) characteristics due to the reverse-biased tunnel junction in negligible, while the first-peak voltage is roughly proportional to the number of forward-biased tunnel junctions. Moreover, the number of NDR characteristics are completely determined by the number of tunnel junctions. The fabricated STTs with multiple junctions, up to eight junctions, exhibited clear transistor operation with multiple NDR characteristics, which were symmetric with the drain bias. These results indicate that any number of gate-controlled NDR characteristics can be realized in MJ-STTs by using an appropriate number of tunnel junctions in series. In addition, as an example of a functional circuit using MJ-STTs, we implemented a tri-stable circuit with a four-junction STT and a load resistor connected in series. The tri-stable operation was confirmed by applying a combination of a reset pulse and a set pulse for each stable point.

  • Novel Electronic Properties on Ferroelectric/ferromagnetic Heterostructures

    We have constructed a new concept device with combination of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials by a laser ablation technique. An ideal hetero-epitaxy can be obtained owing to the similar crystal structure of perovskite type ferroelectric Pb (Zr, Ti) O3; (so called PZT) and ferromagnetic (La, Sr) MnO3. The ferromagnetic (La, Sr) MnO3 compounds are well known for their colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) properties. The CMR effect is strongly affected by the lattice stress. The PZT, on the other hand, is famous for its large piezoelectrics. We can introduce the lattice stress easily by applying voltage for the piezoelectric compounds. In the heterostructured ferromagnetic/ferroelectric devices, there are remarkable interesting phenomena. Electric properties of the ferromagnetic material can be controlled by piezoelectric effect via distortion of crystal structure.

  • A Novel Narrow-Band Bandpass Filter and Its Application to SSB Communication

    In this paper a novel narrow-band bandpass filter with an output pair of analytic signals is presented. Since it is based on the complex analog filter, both synthesis and response characteristics of this filter are different from conventional bandpass filters. In the design of this filter, the frequency shift method is employed and the conventional lowpass to bandpass frequency transformation is not required. The analysis and examples show that the output signal pair of the proposed filter possesses same filtering characteristics and a 90 degree phase shifting characteristics in the passband. Therefore, the proposed filter will be used for a single sideband (SSB) signal generator without quadrature generator.
