A frequently occurring subcircuit consists of a loop of a resistor (R), a field-effect transistor (FET), and a capacitor (C). The FET acts as a switch, controlled at its gate terminal by a clock voltage. This subcircuit may be acting as a sample-and-hold (S/H), as a passive mixer (P-M), or as a bandpass filter or bandpass impedance. In this work, we will present a useful analysis that leads to a simple signal flow graph (SFG), which captures the FET-R-C circuit's action completely across a wide range of design parameters. The SFG dissects the circuit into three filtering functions and ideal sampling. This greatly simplifies analysis of frequency response, noise, input impedance, and conversion gain, and leads to guidelines for optimum design. This paper focuses on the analysis of a single-path FET-R-C circuit's signal transfer characteristics including the reconstruction of the complete waveform from the discrete-time sampled voltage.

This letter proposes performance evaluation of phase-only correlation (POC) functions using signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and peak-to-correlation energy (PCE). We derive the general expressions of SNR and PCE of the POC functions as correlation performance measures. SNR is expressed by simple fractional function of circular variance. PCE is simply given by squared peak value of the POC functions, and its expectation can be expressed in terms of circular variance.

This paper proposes an image denoising method using singular value decomposition (SVD) with block-rotation-based operations in wavelet domain. First, we decompose a noisy image to some sub-blocks, and use the single-level discrete 2-D wavelet transform to decompose each sub-block into the low-frequency image part and the high-frequency parts. Then, we use SVD and rotation-based SVD with the rank-1 approximation to filter the noise of the different high-frequency parts, and get the denoised sub-blocks. Finally, we reconstruct the sub-block from the low-frequency part and the filtered the high-frequency parts by the inverse wavelet transform, and reorganize each denoised sub-blocks to obtain the final denoised image. Experiments show the effectiveness of this method, compared with relevant methods.

Nuclear power plants require in-vessel inspections for soundness checks and preventive maintenance. One inspection procedure is visual testing (VT), which is based on video images of an underwater camera in a nuclear reactor. However, a lot of noise is superimposed on VT images due to radiation exposure. We propose a technique for improving the quality of those images by image processing that reduces radiation noise and enhances signals. Real-time video processing was achieved by applying the proposed technique with a parallel processing unit. Improving the clarity of VT images will lead to reducing the burden on inspectors.

This paper proposes a matched myriad filter based detector for MSK signal under symmetric alpha-stable (SαS) noise. As shown in the previous literatures, SαS distribution is more accurate to characterize the atmospheric noise, which is the main interference in VLF communication. MSK modulation is widely used in VLF communication for its high spectral efficiency and constant envelope properties. However, the optimal detector for MSK under SαS noise is rarely reported due to its memory modulation characteristic. As MSK signal can be viewed as a sinusoidal pulse weighted offset QPSK (OQPSK), a matched myriad filter is proposed to derive a near-optimal detection performance for the in-phase and quadrature components, respectively. Simulations for MSK demodulation under SαS noise with different α validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

With the extensive use of location based devices, trajectories of various kinds of moving objects can be collected and stored. As time going on, the volume of trajectory data increases exponentially, which presents a series of problems in storage, transmission and analysis. Moreover, GPS trajectories are never perfectly accurate and sometimes with high noise. Therefore, how to overcome these problems becomes an urgent task in trajectory data mining and related applications. In this paper, an adaptive noise filtering trajectory compression and recovery algorithm based on Compressed Sensing (CS) is proposed. Firstly, a noise reduction model is introduced to filter the high noise in GPS trajectories. Secondly, the compressed data can be obtained by the improved GPS Trajectory Data Compression Algorithm. Thirdly, an adaptive GPS trajectory data recovery algorithm is adopted to restore the compressed trajectories to their original status approximately. Finally, comprehensive experiments on real and synthetic datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is not only good at noise filtering, but also with high compression ratio and recovery performance compared to current algorithms.

This paper proposes a triangular active charge injection method to reduce resonant power supply noise by injecting the adequate amount of charge into the supply line of the LSI in response to the current consumption of the core circuit. The proposed circuit is composed of three key components, a voltage drop detector, an injection controller circuit and a canceling capacitor circuit. In addition to the theoretical analysis of the proposed method, the measurement results indicate that our proposed method with active capacitor can realize about 14% noise reduction compared with the original noise amplitude. The proposed circuit consumes 25.2 mW in steady state and occupies 0.182 mm2.

This paper presents a 27.5-29.6GHz fractional-N frequency synthesizer using reference and frequency doublers to achieve low in-band and out-of-band phase-noise for 5G mobile communications. A consideration of the baseband carrier recovery circuit helps estimate phase noise requirement for high modulation scheme. The push-push amplifier and 28GHz balun help achieving differential signals with low out-of-band phase noise while consuming low power. A charge pump with gated offset as well as reference doubler help reducing PD noise resulting in low in-band phase noise while sampling loop filter helps reduce spurs. The proposed synthesizer has been implemented in 65nm CMOS technology achieving an in-band and out-of-band phase noise of -78dBc/Hz and -126dBc/Hz, respectively. It consumes only a total power of 33mW. The jitter-power figure-of-merit (FOM) is -231dB which is the highest among the state of the art >20GHz fractional-N PLLs using a low reference clock (<200MHz). The measured reference spurs are less than -80dBc.

This paper shows an optimal spreading sequence in the Weyl sequence class, which is similar to the set of the Oppermann sequences for asynchronous CDMA systems. Sequences in Weyl sequence class have the desired property that the order of cross-correlation is low. Therefore, sequences in the Weyl sequence class are expected to minimize the inter-symbol interference. We evaluate the upper bound of cross-correlation and odd cross-correlation of spreading sequences in the Weyl sequence class and construct the optimization problem: minimize the upper bound of the absolute values of cross-correlation and odd cross-correlation. Since our optimization problem is convex, we can derive the optimal spreading sequences as the global solution of the problem. We show their signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) in a special case. From this result, we propose how the initial elements are assigned, that is, how spreading sequences are assigned to each users. In an asynchronous CDMA system, we also numerically compare our spreading sequences with other ones, the Gold codes, the Oppermann sequences, the optimal Chebyshev spreading sequences and the SP sequences in Bit Error Rate. Our spreading sequence, which yields the global solution, has the highest performance among the other spreading sequences tested.

Predicting the receiving sensitivity of an offset Gregorian reflector system antenna requires an accurate prediction of the antenna noise temperature. Calculating the antenna noise temperature is computationally intensive especially for the electrically larger reflector systems. Using the main reflector masking technique, which removes the main reflector from the calculation domain, considerably reduces the computation cost. For an electrically smaller reflector system, diffraction effects affect the accuracy of this technique. Recently an improvement to the technique was proposed that introduces diffraction compensation correction factors. In this paper we introduce new compensation factor and interpolation techniques that improve the accuracy of the approximated antenna noise temperature calculation. The techniques are applied to several offset Gregorian reflector systems similar to those considered for the Square Kilometre Array, with various feeds and the accuracy in terms of receiving sensitivity is evaluated. The techniques can reduce the prediction error of the receiving sensitivity for frequency-invariant feeds to fractions of a percent, while maintaining a significant speed-up over direct calculations.

This paper proposes a novel method for two-dimensional (2-D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of multiple signals employing a sparse L-shaped array structured by a sparse linear array (SLA), a sparse uniform linear array (SULA) and an auxiliary sensor. In this method, the elevation angles are estimated by using the SLA and an efficient search approach, while the azimuth angle estimation is performed in two stages. In the first stage, the rough azimuth angle estimates are obtained by utilizing a noise-free cross-covariance matrix (CCM), the estimated elevation angles and data from three sensors including the auxiliary sensor. In the second stage, the fine azimuth angle estimates can be achieved by using the shift-invariance property of the SULA and the rough azimuth angle estimates. Without extra pair-matching process, the proposed method can achieve automatic pairing of the 2-D DOA estimates. Simulation results show that our approach outperforms the compared methods, especially in the cases of low SNR, snapshot deficiency and multiple sources.

In this paper, we theoretically analyse the influence of intersymbol interference (ISI) and continuous wave interference (CWI) on the bit error rate (BER) performance of the spread spectrum (SS) system using a real-valued Huffman sequence under the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) environment. The aperiodic correlation function of the Huffman sequence has zero sidelobes except the shift-end values at the left and right ends of shift. The system can give the unified communication and ranging system because the output of a matched filter (MF) is the ideal impulse by generating transmitted signal of the bit duration T=NTc, N=2n, n=1,2,… from the sequence of length M=2kN+1, k=0,1,…, where Tc is the chip duration and N is the spreading factor. As a result, the BER performance of the system is improved with decrease in the absolute value of the shift-end value, and is not influenced by ISI if the shift-end value is almost zero-value. In addition, the BER performance of the system of the bit duration T=NTc with CWI is improved with increase in the sequence length M=2kN+1, and the system can decrease the influence of CWI.

The combination of GPS measurements with the dynamic model via a Kalman filter or an extended Kalman filter, also known as GPS based reduced dynamic orbit determination (RDOD) techniques, have been widely used for accurate and real time navigation of satellites in low earth orbit (LEO). In previous studies, the GPS measurement noise variance is empirically taken as a constant, which is not reasonable because of insufficient prior information or dynamic environment. An improper estimate of the measurement noise may lead to poor performance or even divergence of the filter. In this letter, an adaptive extended Kalman filter (AEKF)-based approach using GPS dual-frequency pseudo-range measurements is presented, where the GPS pseudo-range measurement noise variance is adaptively estimated by the Carrier to Noise Ratio (C/N0) from the tracking loop of GPS receiver. The simulation results show that the proposed AEKF approach can achieve apparent improvements of the position accuracy and almost brings no extra computational burdens for satellite borne processor.

A wideband CMOS common-gate low-noise amplifier (LNA) with high linearity is proposed. The linearity is improved by dual cross-coupled feedback technique. A passive cross-coupled feedback removes the second-order harmonic feedback effect to the input-referred third-order intercept point (IIP3), which is known as one of the limitations for linearity enhancement using feedback. An active cross-coupled feedback, constituted by a voltage combiner and a feedback capacitor is employed to enhance loop gain, and acquire further linearity improvement. An enhanced LC-match input network and forward isolation of active cross-coupled feedback enable the proposed LNA with wideband input matching and flat gain performance. Fabricated in a 0.13 µm RF CMOS process, the LNA achieves a flat voltage gain of 13 dB, an NF of 2.6∼3.8 dB, and an IIP3 of 3.6∼4.9 dBm over a 3 dB bandwidth of 0.1∼1.3 GHz. It consumes only 3.2 mA from a 1.2 V supply and occupies an area of 480×418 um2. In contrast to those of reported wideband LNAs, the proposed LNA has the merit of low power consumption and high linearity.

In this letter, robust sparse signal recovery is considered in the presence of heavy-tailed impulsive noise. Two Bayesian approaches are developed where a Bayesian framework is constructed by utilizing the Laplace distribution to model the noise. By rewriting the noise-fitting term as a reweighted quadratic function which is optimized in the sparse signal space, the Type I Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) approach is proposed. Next, by exploiting the hierarchical structure of the sparse prior and the likelihood function, we develop the Type II Evidence Maximization approach optimized in the hyperparameter space. The numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods in the presence of impulsive noise.

The remaining issues in optical transmission technology are the degradation of optical signal to noise power ratio due to amplifier noise and the distortions due to optical nonlinear effects in a fiber. Therefore in addition to the Shannon limit, practical channel capacity is believed to be restricted by the nonlinear Shannon limit. The nonlinear Shannon limit has been derived under the assumption that the received signal points on the constellation map deviated by optical amplifier noise and nonlinear interference noise are symmetrically distributed around the ideal signal point and the sum of the noises are regarded as white Gaussian noise. The nonlinear Shannon limit is considered as a kind of theoretical limitation. However it is doubtful that its derivation process and applicable range have been understood well. In this paper, some fundamental papers on the nonlinear Shannon limit are reviewed to better understanding its meaning and applicable range.

As device sizes are downscaled to nanometer, Random Telegraph Noise (RTN) becomes dominant. It is indispensable to accurately estimate the effect of RTN. We propose an RTN simulation method for analog circuits. It is based on the charge trapping model. The RTN-induced threshold voltage fluctuation are replicated to attach a variable DC voltage source to the gate of a MOSFET by using Verilog-AMS. In recent deca-nanometer processes, high-k (HK) materials are used in gate dielectrics to decrease the leakage current. We must consider the defect distribution characteristics both in HK and interface layer (IL). This RTN model can be applied to the bimodal model which includes characteristics of the HK and IL dielectrics. We confirm that the drain current of MOSFETs temporally fluctuates in circuit-level simulations. The fluctuations of RTN are different in MOSFETs. RTN affects the frequency characteristics of ring oscillators (ROs). The distribution of RTN-induced frequency fluctuations has a long-tail in a HK process. The RTN model applied to the bimodal can replicate a long-tail distribution. Our proposed method can estimate the temporal impact of RTN including multiple transistors.

In this paper, the Voronoi region of the transmitted codeword is employed to improve the sphere bound on the maximum-likelihood decoding (MLD) performance of binary linear block codes over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. We obtain the improved sphere bounds both on the frame-error probability and the bit-error probability. With the framework of the sphere bound proposed by Kasami et al., we derive the conditional decoding error probability on the spheres by defining a subset of the Voronoi region of the transmitted codeword, since the Voronoi regions of a binary linear block code govern the decoding error probability analysis over AWGN channels. The proposed bound improves the sphere bound by Kasami et al. and the sphere bound by Herzberg and Poltyrev. The computational complexity of the proposed bound is similar to that of the sphere bound by Kasami et al.

This paper presents convex filter networks that are obtained from extensions of morphological filters. The proposed filter network consists of a convex and concave filter that are extensions of the dilation and erosion of mathematical morphology with the maxout activation function. Maxout can approximate arbitrary convex functions as piecewise linear functions, including the max function. The class of the convex function hence includes the morphological dilation and can be trained for specific image processing tasks. In this paper, the closing filter is extended to a convex-concave filter network with maxout. The convex-concave filter is trained by the stochastic gradient method for noise and mask removal. The examples of noise and mask removal show that the convex-concave filter can obtain a recovered image, whose quality is comparable to inpainting by using the total variation minimization with reduced computational cost without mask information of the corrupted pixels.
