This study investigates a two/three-dimensional (2D/3D) symbol-mapping technique that evaluates data transmission quality based on a four-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM-4) symbol transition. Multi-dimensional symbol transition mapping facilitates the visualization of the degree of interference (ISI). The simulation and experimental results demonstrated that the 2D symbol mapping can evaluate the PAM-4 data transmission quality degraded by ISI and visualize the equalization effect. Furthermore, potential applications of 2D mapping and its extension to 3D mapping were explored.

In high-speed data communication systems, it is important to evaluate the quality of the transmitted signal at the receiver. At a high-speed data rate, the transmission line characteristics act as a high-frequency attenuator and contribute to the intersymbol interference (ISI) at the receiver. To evaluate ISI conditions, eye diagrams are widely used to analyze signal quality and visualize the ISI effect as an eye-opening rate. Various types of on-chip eye-opening monitors (EOM) have been proposed to adjust waveform-shaping circuits. However, the eye diagram evaluation of multi-valued signaling becomes more difficult than that of binary transmission because of the complicated signal transition patterns. Moreover, in severe ISI situations where the eye is completely closed, eye diagram evaluation does not work well. This paper presents a novel evaluation method using Two-dimensional(2D) symbol mapping and a linear mixture model (LMM) for multi-valued data transmission. In our proposed method, ISI evaluation can be realized by 2D symbol mapping, and an efficient quantitative analysis can be realized using the LMM. An experimental demonstration of four leveled pulse amplitude modulation(PAM-4) data transmission using a Cat5e cable 100 m is presented. The experimental results show that the proposed method can extract features of the ISI effect even though the eye is completely closed in the server condition.

Security-related issues have become more significant due to the proliferation of IT. Collating security-related information in a database improves security. For example, Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) is a security knowledge repository containing descriptions of vulnerabilities about software or source code. Although the descriptions include various entities, there is not a uniform entity structure, making security analysis difficult using individual entities. Developing a consistent entity structure will enhance the security field. Herein we propose a method to automatically label select entities from CVE descriptions by applying the Named Entity Recognition (NER) technique. We manually labeled 3287 CVE descriptions and conducted experiments using a machine learning model called BERT to compare the proposed method to labeling with regular expressions. Machine learning using the proposed method significantly improves the labeling accuracy. It has an f1 score of about 0.93, precision of about 0.91, and recall of about 0.95, demonstrating that our method has potential to automatically label select entities from CVE descriptions.

A novel charge pump, Capacitance Varying Charge Pump (CVCP) is proposed. This charge pump is composed of variable capacitors and rectifiers, and the charge transfer is attained by changing the capacitance values in a manner similar to peristaltic pumps. The analysis of multi-stage CVCP reveals that the output voltage is exponentially dependent on the stage number. Thus, compared with the Dickson charge pump, this charge pump has an advantage in generating high voltages with small stages. As a practical example of CVCP, we present an implementation realized by a MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology. Here, the variable capacitor is enabled by a comb-capacitor attached to a high-quality factor resonator. As the rectifier, a PN-junction diode formed in the MEMS layer is used. Simulations including the mechanical elements are carried out for this MEMS version of CVCP. The simulation results on the output voltage and load characteristics are shown to coincide well with the theoretical estimations. The MEMS CVCP is suited for MEMS devices and vibration energy harvesters.

Recent embedded systems require both traditional machinery control and information processing, such as network and GUI handling. A dual-OS platform consolidates a real-time OS (RTOS) and general-purpose OS (GPOS) to realize efficient software development on one physical processor. Although the dual-OS platform attracts increasing attention, it often suffers from energy inefficiency in the GPOS for guaranteeing real-time responses of the RTOS. This paper proposes an energy minimization method called DVFS virtualization, which allows running multiple DVFS policies dedicated to the RTOS and GPOS, respectively. The experimental evaluation using a commercial microcontroller showed that the proposed hardware could change the supply voltage within 500 ns and reduce the energy consumption of typical applications by 60 % in the best case compared to conventional dual-OS platforms. Furthermore, evaluation using a commercial microprocessor achieved a 15 % energy reduction of practical open-source software at best.

An ESL-cancelling circuit for a shunt-connected film capacitor filter using vertically stacked coupled square loops is reported in this paper. The circuit is applicable for a shunt-connected capacitor filter whose equivalent series inductance (ESL) of the shunt-path causes deterioration of filter performance at frequencies above the self-resonant frequency. Two pairs of vertically stacked magnetically coupled square loops are used in the circuit those can equivalently add negative inductance in series to the shunt-path to cancel ESL for improvement of the filter performance. The ESL-cancelling circuit for a 1-μF film capacitor was designed according to the Biot-Savart law and electromagnetic (EM)-analysis, and the prototype was fabricated with an FR4 substrate. The measured result showed 20-dB improvement of the filter performance above the self-resonant frequency as designed, satisfying Sdd21 less than -40dB at 1MHz to 100MHz. This result is almost equivalent to reduce ESL of the shunt-path to less than 1nH at 100MHz and is also difficult to realize using any kind of a single bulky film capacitor without cancelling ESL.

Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) generally play an important role to support safe drive by detecting potential risk factors beforehand and informing the driver of them. However, if too many services in ADAS rely on visual-based technologies, the driver becomes increasingly burdened and exhausted especially on their eyes. The drivers should be back out of monitoring tasks other than significantly important ones in order to alleviate the burden of the driver as long as possible. In-vehicle auditory signals to assist the safe drive have been appealing as another approach to altering visual suggestions in recent years. In this paper, we developed an in-vehicle auditory signals evaluation platform in an existing driving simulator. In addition, using in-vehicle auditory signals, we have demonstrated that our developed platform has highlighted the possibility to partially switch from only visual-based tasks to mixing with auditory-based ones for alleviating the burden on drivers.

We have proposed autonomous network diagnosis platform for operation of future large capacity and virtualized network, including 5G and beyond 5G services. As for the one candidate of information collection and analyzing function blocks in the platform, we proposed novel optical sensing techniques that utilized tapped raw signal data acquired from digital coherent optical receivers. The raw signal data is captured before various digital signal processing for demodulation. Therefore, it contains various waveform deformation and/or noise as it experiences through transmission fibers. In this paper, we examined to detect two possible failures in transmission lines including fiber bending and optical filter shift by analyzing the above-mentioned raw signal data with the help of machine learning. For the purpose, we have implemented Docker container applications in WhiteBox Cassini to acquire real-time raw signal data. We generated CNN model for the detections in off-line processing and used them for real-time detections. We have confirmed successful detection of optical fiber bend and/or optical filter shift in real-time with high accuracy. Also, we evaluated their tolerance against ASE noise and invented novel approach to improve detection accuracy. In addition to that, we succeeded to detect them even in the situation of simultaneous occurrence of those failures.

We present our data-collection and deep neural network (DNN)-training scheme for extracting the optical status from signals received by digital coherent optical receivers in fiber-optic networks. The DNN is trained with unlabeled datasets across multiple administrative network domains by combining federated learning and unsupervised learning. The scheme allows network administrators to train a common DNN-based encoder that extracts optical status in their networks without revealing their private datasets. An early-stage proof of concept was numerically demonstrated by simulation by estimating the optical signal-to-noise ratio and modulation format with 64-GBd 16QAM and quadrature phase-shift keying signals.

The optical phased array (OPA) is an emerging non-mechanical device that enables high-speed beam steering by emitting precisely phase-controlled lightwaves from numerous optical antennas. In practice, however, it is challenging to drive all phase shifters on an OPA in a deterministic manner due to the inevitable fabrication-induced phase errors and crosstalk between the phase shifters. In this work, we fabricate a 16-element silicon photonic non-redundant OPA chip with integrated phase monitors and experimentally demonstrate accurate monitoring of the relative phases of light from each optical antenna. Under the beam steering condition, the optical phase retrieved from the on-chip phase monitors varies linearly with the steering angle, as theoretically expected.

Energy harvesting has been widely investigated as a potential solution to supply power for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Computing devices must operate intermittently rather than continuously, because harvested energy is unstable and some of IoT applications can be periodic. Therefore, processors for IoT devices with intermittent operation must feature a hibernation mode with zero-standby-power in addition to energy-efficient normal mode. In this paper, we describe the layout design and measurement results of a nonvolatile standard cell memory (NV-SCM) and nonvolatile flip-flops (NV-FF) with a nonvolatile memory using Fishbone-in-Cage Capacitor (FiCC) suitable for IoT processors with intermittent operations. They can be fabricated in any conventional CMOS process without any additional mask. NV-SCM and NV-FF are fabricated in a 180nm CMOS process technology. The area overhead by nonvolatility of a bit cell are 74% in NV-SCM and 29% in NV-FF, respectively. We confirmed full functionality of the NV-SCM and NV-FF. The nonvolatile system using proposed NV-SCM and NV-FF can reduce the energy consumption by 24.3% compared to the volatile system when hibernation/normal operation time ratio is 500 as shown in the simulation.

This paper presents on-chip characterization of electrostatic discharge (ESD) impacts applied on the Si-substrate backside of a flip-chip mounted integrated circuit (FC-IC) chip. An FC-IC chip has an open backside and there is a threat of reliability problems and malfunctions caused by the backside ESD. We prepared a test FC-IC chip and measured Si-substrate voltage fluctuations on its frontside by an on-chip monitor (OCM) circuit. The voltage surges as large as 200mV were observed on the frontside when a 200-V ESD gun was irradiated through a 5kΩ contact resistor on the backside of a 350μm thick Si substrate. The distribution of voltage heights was experimentally measured at 20 on-chip locations among thinned Si substrates up to 40μm, and also explained in full-system level simulation of backside ESD impacts with the equivalent models of ESD-gun operation and FC-IC chip assembly.

A fault-tolerant aggregate signature (FT-AS) scheme is a variant of an aggregate signature scheme with the additional functionality to trace signers that create invalid signatures in case an aggregate signature is invalid. Several FT-AS schemes have been proposed so far, and some of them trace such rogue signers in multi-rounds, i.e., the setting where the signers repeatedly send their individual signatures. However, it has been overlooked that there exists a potential attack on the efficiency of bandwidth consumption in a multi-round FT-AS scheme. Since one of the merits of aggregate signature schemes is the efficiency of bandwidth consumption, such an attack might be critical for multi-round FT-AS schemes. In this paper, we propose a new multi-round FT-AS scheme that is tolerant of such an attack. We implement our scheme and experimentally show that it is more efficient than the existing multi-round FT-AS scheme if rogue signers randomly create invalid signatures with low probability, which for example captures spontaneous failures of devices in IoT systems.

A fully analog pipelined deep neural network (DNN) accelerator is proposed, which is constructed by using pipeline registers based on master-slave switched capacitors. The idea of the master-slave switched capacitors is an analog equivalent of the delayed flip-flop (D-FF) which has been used as a digital pipeline register. To estimate the performance of the pipeline register, it is applied to a conventional DNN which performs non-pipeline operation. Compared with the conventional DNN, the cycle time is reduced by 61.5% and data rate is increased by 160%. The accuracy reaches 99.6% in MNIST classification test. The energy consumption per classification is reduced by 88.2% to 0.128µJ, achieving an energy efficiency of 1.05TOPS/W and a throughput of 0.538TOPS in 180nm technology node.

This paper presents a Ka-band high-efficiency power amplifier (PA) with a novel adaptively controlled gate capacitor circuit and a two-step adaptive bias circuit for 5th generation (5G) mobile terminal applications fabricated using a 45-nm silicon on insulator (SOI) CMOS process. The PA adopts a stacked FET structure to increase the output power because of the low breakdown voltage issue of scaled MOSFETs. The novel adaptive gate capacitor circuit properly controls the RF swing for each stacked FET to achieve high efficiency in the several-dB back-off region. Further, the novel two-step adaptive bias circuit effectively controls the gate voltage for each stacked FET for high linearity and high back-off efficiency. At a supply voltage of 4 V, the fabricated PA has exhibited a saturated output power of 20.0 dBm, a peak power added efficiency (PAE) of 42.7%, a 3dB back-off efficiency of 32.7%, a 6dB back-off efficiency of 22.7%, and a gain of 15.6 dB. The effective PA area was 0.82 mm by 0.74 mm.

Lead bromide-based perovskite organic-inorganic quantum-well films incorporated polycyclic aromatic chromophores into the organic layer (in other words, hybrid quantum-wells combined lead bromide semiconductor and organic semiconductors) were prepared by use of the spin-coating technique from the DMF solution in which PbBr2 and alkyl ammonium bromides which were linked polycyclic aromatics, pyrene, phenanthrene, and anthracene. When the pyrene-linked methyl ammonium bromide, which has a relatively small molecular cross-section with regard to the inorganic semiconductor plane, was employed, a lead bromide-based perovskite structure was successfully formed in the spin-coated films. When the phenanthrene-linked and anthracene-linked ammonium bromides, whose chromophore have large molecular cross-sections, were employed, lead bromide-based perovskite structures were not formed. However, the introduction of longer alkyl chains into the aromatics-linked ammonium bromides made it possible to form the perovskite structure.

The problem caused by fake news continues to worsen in today's online social networks. Intuitively, it seems effective to issue corrections as a countermeasure. However, corrections can, ironically, strengthen attention to fake news, which worsens the situation. This paper proposes a model for describing the interaction between fake news and the corrections as a reaction-diffusion system; this yields the mechanism by which corrections increase attention to fake news. In this model, the emergence of groups of users who believe in fake news is understood as a Turing pattern that appears in the activator-inhibitor model. Numerical calculations show that even if the network structure has no spatial bias, the interaction between fake news and the corrections creates groups that are strongly interested in discussing fake news. Also, we propose and evaluate a basic strategy to counter fake news.

In this paper, a metadata-based quality-estimation model is proposed for tile-based omnidirectional video streaming services, aiming to realize quality monitoring during service provision. In the tile-based omnidirectional video (ODV) streaming services, the ODV is divided into tiles, and the high-quality tiles and the low-quality tiles are distributed in accordance with the user's viewing direction. When the user changes the viewing direction, the user temporarily watches video with the low-quality tiles. In addition, the longer the time (delay time) until the high-quality tile for the new viewing direction is downloaded, the longer the viewing time of video with the low-quality tile, and thus the delay time affects quality. From the above, the video quality of the low-quality tiles and the delay time significantly impact quality, and these factors need to be considered in the quality-estimation model. We develop quality-estimation models by extending the conventional quality-estimation models for 2D adaptive streaming. We also show that the quality-estimation model using the bitrate, resolution, and frame rate of high- and low-quality tiles and that the delay time has sufficient estimation accuracy based on the results of subjective quality evaluation experiments.
