  • Implementation of Low-Noise Switched-Capacitor Integrators with Small Capacitors

    A technique to reduce noise transfer functions (NTF) of switched-capacitor (SC) integrators without changing their signal transfer functions (STF) is proposed. The proposed technique based on a simple reconnection scheme of multiple sampling capacitors. It can be implemented into any SC integrators as long as they have a transfer delay. A design strategy is also given to reduce the effect of parasitic capacitors. An SC integrator with a small total capacitance and a low noise transfer gain based on the proposed technique is also proposed. For a given design example, the total capacitance and the simulated noise transfer gain of the proposed SC integrator are 37% and 90% less than the conventional one.

  • A Single-Supply 84 dB DR Audio-Band ADC for Compact Digital Microphones

    A 20 kHz audio-band ADC with a single pair of power and ground pads is implemented for a digital electret microphone. Under the limited power/ground pad condition, the switching noise effect on the signal quality is estimated via post simulations with parasitic models. Performance degradation is minimized by time-domain noise isolation with sufficient time-spacing between the sampling edge and the output transition. The prototype ADC was implemented in a 0.18 µm CMOS process. It operates under a minimum supply voltage of 1.6 V with total current of 420 µA. Operating at 2.56 MHz clock frequency, it achieves 84 dB dynamic range and a 64 dB peak signal-to-(noise+distortion) ratio. The measured power supply rejection at a 100 mVpp 217 Hz square wave is -72 dB.

  • An Efficient and Secure Service Discovery Protocol for Ubiquitous Computing Environments

    Recently, numerous service discovery protocols have been introduced in the open literature. Unfortunately, many of them did not consider security issues, and for those that did, many security and privacy problems still remain. One important issue is to protect the privacy of a service provider while enabling an end-user to search an alternative service using multiple keywords. To deal with this issue, the existing protocols assumed that a directory server should be trusted or owned by each service provider. However, an adversary may compromise the directory server due to its openness property. In this paper, we suggest an efficient verification of service subscribers to resolve this issue and analyze its performance and security. Using this method, we propose an efficient and secure service discovery protocol protecting the privacy of a service provider while providing multiple keywords search to an end-user. Also, we provide performance and security analysis of our protocol.

    In-place AC measurements of the signal gain and substrate sensitivity of differential pair transistors of an analog amplifier are combined with DC characterization of the threshold voltage (Vth) of the same transistors. An on-chip continuous time waveform monitoring technique enables in-place matrix measurements of differential pair transistors with a variety of channel sizes and geometry, allowing the wide coverage of experiments about the transistor-level physical layout dependency of substrate noise response. A prototype test structure uses a 90-nm CMOS technology and demonstrates the geometry-dependent variation of substrate sensitivity of transistors in operation.

    A 200 kS/s 10-bit successive approximation (SA) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a rail-to-rail input signal is proposed for acquiring biosignals such as EEG and MEG signals. A split-capacitor-based digital-to-analog converter (SC-DAC) is used to reduce the power consumption and chip area. The SC-DAC's linearity is improved by using dummy capacitors and a small bootstrapped analog switch with a constant on-resistance, without increasing its area. A time-domain comparator with a replica circuit for clock feed-through noise compensation is designed by using a highly differential digital architecture involving a small area. Its area is about 50% less than that of a conventional time-domain comparator. The proposed SA ADC is implemented by using a 0.18-µm 1-poly 6-metal CMOS process with a 1 V supply. The measured DNL and INL are +0.44/-0.4 LSB and +0.71/-0.62 LSB, respectively. The SNDR is 55.43 dB for a 99.01 kHz analog input signal at a sampling rate of 200 kS/s. The power consumption and core area are 5 µW and 0.126 mm2, respectively. The FoM is 47 fJ/conversion-step.

  • A Novel Body Bias Selection Scheme for Leakage Minimization

    In this letter, a novel body bias selection scheme for minimizing the leakage of MOS transistors is presented. The proposed scheme directly monitors leakages at present and adjacent body bias voltages, and dynamically updates the voltage at which the leakage is minimized regardless of process and temperature variations. Comparison results in a 46 nm CMOS technology indicated that the proposed scheme achieved leakage reductions of up to 68% as compared to conventional body biasing schemes.

    Low drop-out regulators (LDOs) are widely used in the system-on-a-chip (SoC) design. Due to the multi-function and energy saving requirements for mobile applications nowadays, more strict specifications are expected on the developmental roadmap of the LDOs. An output-capacitorless LDO providing fast transient response under the low supply voltage and low quiescent current conditions is proposed in this paper. Provided by the low supply voltage, the proposed LDO adopts cascading technique using the Multipath Nested Miller Compensation (MNMC) to maintain a higher bandwidth for fast transient requirement. In addition, a Transient Quiescent Current Booster (TQCB) is supplemented to the operational amplifier to improve the slew rate for the fast load transient. The TQCB only raises the quiescent current during the load transient instant so that both power saving and the load response improvement could be well achieved. It deserves noting that the proposed TQCB contains only two transistors, which is simple to be implemented compared to the other transient current enhancement techniques. The designed LDO has only 1.6 pF capacitance for the totally added on-chip compensation, and 25.8 µA of current consumption in the main amplifier. The recovery time under the fast load change is less than 3 µs and the stability is guaranteed. Test results from the real implementation of a 0.35 µm CMOS process verify that the designed LDO performs as expected.

  • A New Method for Per-Flow Traffic Measurement

    Per-flow traffic measurement is essential for network management; billing, traffic engineering, mitigating denial of service attacks, to mention just a few. In this field, the fundamental problem is that the size of expensive SRAM is too small to hold traffic data from high-speed networks. In this paper, we propose a new method for per-flow traffic measurement, which is based on the virtual vector that was originally designed for the problem of spread estimation. We modify the original virtual vector and show that this simple change yields a highly effective per-flow traffic estimator. Experiments show that our proposed scheme outperforms the state-of-the-art method in terms of both processing time and space requirement.

    We demonstrate an all-optical picosecond pulse duration-tunable nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ)-to-return-to-zero (RZ) data format conversion using a Raman amplifier-based compressor and a fiber-based four-wave mixing (FWM) switch. A NRZ data signal is injected into the fiber-based FWM switch (AND gate) with a compressed RZ clock by the Raman amplifier-based compressor, and convert to RZ data signal by the fiber-based FWM switch. The compressed RZ clock train acts as a pump signal in the fiber-based FWM switch to perform the NRZ-to-RZ data format conversion. By changing the Raman pump power of the Raman amplifier-based compressor, it is possible to tune the pulse duration of the converted RZ data signal from 15 ps to 2 ps. In all the tuning range, the receiver sensitivity at bit error rate (BER) of 10-9 for the converted RZ data signal was about 1.31.7 dB better than the receiver sensitivity of the input NRZ data signal. Moreover, the pulse pedestal of the converted RZ data signals is well suppressed owing to the FWM process in the fiber-based FWM switch.

  • Optimized Fuzzy Adaptive Filtering for Ubiquitous Sensor Networks

    In ubiquitous sensor networks, extra energy savings can be achieved by selecting the filtering solution to counter the attack. This adaptive selection process employs a fuzzy rule-based system for selecting the best solution, as there is uncertainty in the reasoning processes as well as imprecision in the data. In order to maximize the performance of the fuzzy system the membership functions should be optimized. However, the efforts required to perform this optimization manually can be impractical for commonly used applications. This paper presents a GA-based membership function optimizer for fuzzy adaptive filtering (GAOFF) in ubiquitous sensor networks, in which the efficiency of the membership functions is measured based on simulation results and optimized by GA. The proposed optimization consists of three units; the first performs a simulation using a set of membership functions, the second evaluates the performance of the membership functions based on the simulation results, and the third constructs a population representing the membership functions by GA. The proposed method can optimize the membership functions automatically while utilizing minimal human expertise.

  • Neary: Conversational Field Detection Based on Situated Sound Similarity

    This paper proposes a system called Neary that detects conversational fields based on similarity of auditory situation among users. The similarity of auditory situation between each pair of the users is measured by the similarity of frequency property of sound captured by head-worn microphones of the individual users. Neary is implemented with a simple algorithm and runs on portable PCs. Experimental result shows Neary can successfully distinguish groups of conversations and track dynamic changes of them. This paper also presents two examples of Neary deployment to detect user contexts during experience sharing in touring at the zoo and attending an academic conference.

  • A Diagnosis Testbench of Analog IP Cores for Characterization of Substrate Coupling Strength

    A diagnosis testbench of analog IP cores characterizes their coupling strengths against on-chip environmental disturbances, specifically with regard to substrate voltage variations. The testbench incorporates multi-tone digital noise generators and a precision waveform capture with multiple probing channels. A prototype test bench fabricated in a 90-nm CMOS technology demonstrates the diagnosis of substrate coupling up to 400 MHz with dynamic range of more than 60 dB. The coefficients of noise propagation as well as noise coupling on a silicon substrate are quantitatively derived for analog IP cores processed in a target technology, and further linked with noise awared EDA tooling for the successful adoption of such IP cores in SoC integration.

    Ubiquitous computing and communication are the key technology for achieving economic growth, sustainable development, safe and secure community towards a ubiquitous network society. Although the technology alone cannot solve the emerging problems, it is important to deploy services everywhere and reach real people with sensor enabled smart phones or devices. Using these devices and wireless sensor networks, we have been creating various types of ubiquitous services which support our everyday life. In this paper, we describe ubiquitous services based on a HOT-SPA model and discuss challenges in creating new ubiquitous services with smart enablers such as smart phones, wireless sensor nodes, social media, and cloud services. We first classify various types of ubiquitous service and introduce the HOT-SPA model which is aimed at modeling ubiquitous services. Several ubiquitous services, such as DIY smart object services, Twitthings, Airy Notes, and SensingCloud, are described. We then address the challenges in creating advanced ubiquitous services by enhancing coupling between a cyber and a physical space.

    In this paper, a novel switched-capacitor DC-DC converter with pulse density and width modulation (PDWM) is proposed with reduced output ripple at variable output voltages. While performing pulse density modulation (PDM), the proposed PDWM modulates the pulse width at the same time to reduce the output ripple with high power efficiency. The prototype chip was implemented using 65 nm CMOS process. The switched-capacitor DC-DC converter has 0.2-V to 0.47-V output voltage and delivers 0.25-mA to 10-mA output current from a 1-V input supply with a peak efficiency of 87%. Compared with the conventional PDM scheme, the proposed switched-capacitor DC-DC converter with PDWM reduces the output ripple by 57% in the low output voltage region with the efficiency penalty of 2%.

  • Enhancing Credibility of Location Based Service Using Multiple Sensing Technologies

    Recent Location Based Services (LBS) extend not only information services such as car navigation services, but supporting various applications such as augmented reality and emergency services in ubiquitous computing environments. However location based services in the ubiquitous computing environment bring several security issues such as location privacy and forgery. While the privacy of the location based service is considered as the important security issue, security against location forgery is less considered. In this paper, we propose improved Han et al.'s protocol [1] that provides more lightweight computation. Our proposed model also improves the credibility of LBS by deploying multiple location sensing technologies.

    We propose the collective electron tunneling model in the electron injection process between the Nano Dots (NDs) and the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). We report the collective motion of electrons between the 2DEG and the NDs based on the measurement of the Si-ND floating gate structure in the previous studies. However, the origin of this collective motion has not been revealed yet. We evaluate the proposed tunneling model by the model calculation. We reveal that our proposed model reproduces the collective motion of electrons. The insight obtained by our model shows new viewpoints for designing future nano-electronic devices.

  • A 5th-Order SC Complex BPF Using Series Capacitances for Low-IF Narrowband Wireless Receivers

    A fifth-order switched-capacitor (SC) complex filter was implemented in 0.2-µm CMOS technology. A novel SC integrator was developed to reduce the die size and current consumption of the filter. The filter is centered at 24.730.15 kHz (3δ) and has a bandwidth of 20.260.3 kHz (3δ). The image channel is attenuated by more than 42.6 dB. The in-band third-order harmonic input intercept point (IIP3) is 17.3 dBm, and the input referred RMS noise is 34.3 µVrms. The complex filter consumes 350 µA with a 2.0-V power supply. The die size is 0.578 mm2. Owing to the new SC integrator, the filter achieves a 27% reduction in die size without any degradation in its characteristics, including its noise performance, compared with the conventional equivalent.

  • Detecting Long Duration Flows without False Negatives

    A new network measurement primitive was recently proposed, known as long duration flows (LDF). LDF deserves special attention for network management and security monitoring. This kind of traffic appears periodically and persistently through a long period, but its total amount of traffic is not necessarily large. This feature makes detection difficult especially when the resources of detection system are limited or the detection should cover high-speed networks. In this paper, we propose a new lightweight data structure and streaming algorithm to detect such traffic.

  • A Dynamic Source-Follower Integrator and Its Application to ΔΣ Modulators

    A switched-capacitor integrator based on dynamic source follower amplifiers has been proposed. Integrator operation has been confirmed and analyzed by assuming 0.18-µm CMOS technology. The integrator can reduce the number of elements considerably compared with conventional ones using operational amplifiers. As a result, the power dissipation of proposed integrator can be reduced to approximately one-eighth that of conventional integrators. The integrator is applied to a second-order ΔΣ modulator, and its successful operation has been confirmed by transistor-level circuit simulation.

  • A Recognition Method for One-Stroke Finger Gestures Using a MEMS 3D Accelerometer

    Automatic recognition of finger gestures can be used for promotion of life quality. For example, a senior citizen can control the home appliance, call for help in emergency, or even communicate with others through simple finger gestures. Here, we focus on one-stroke finger gesture, which are intuitive to be remembered and performed. In this paper, we proposed and evaluated an accelerometer-based method for detecting the predefined one-stroke finger gestures from the data collected using a MEMS 3D accelerometer worn on the index finger. As alternative to the optoelectronic, sonic and ultrasonic approaches, the accelerometer-based method is featured as self-contained, cost-effective, and can be used in noisy or private space. A compact wireless sensing mote integrated with the accelerometer, called MagicRing, is developed to be worn on the finger for real data collection. A general definition on one-stroke gesture is given out, and 12 kinds of one-stroke finger gestures are selected from human daily activities. A set of features is extracted among the candidate feature set including both traditional features like standard deviation, energy, entropy, and frequency of acceleration and a new type of feature called relative feature. Both subject-independent and subject-dependent experiment methods were evaluated on three kinds of representative classifiers. In the subject-independent experiment among 20 subjects, the decision tree classifier shows the best performance recognizing the finger gestures with an average accuracy rate for 86.92 %. In the subject-dependent experiment, the nearest neighbor classifier got the highest accuracy rate for 97.55 %.
