  • Multiple-Reference Compression of RTP/UDP/IP Headers for Mobile Multimedia Communications

    In this paper, we propose an RTP/UDP/IP header compression method, Multiple-Reference Compression (MRC), which is designed for mobile multimedia communications. MRC is a compression method that calculates differences from the multiple reference headers that have already been sent and inserts them into a compressed header. The receiver can decompress the compressed header as long as at least one of the reference headers is correctly received and decompressed. MRC improves robustness against packet losses compared with CRTP defined in IETF RFC2508, and imposes less overheads and computational burden than robust header compression (ROHC) defined in RFC3095. We also implemented MRC and other header compression algorithms into our mobile testbed, and conducted multimedia streaming experiments over the testbed. The results of the experiments show that MRC offers the same level of packet loss rate as Legacy RTP for both audio and video streams, and provides better media quality than Legacy RTP and CRTP on error-prone radio links. Header compression robust against packet losses is expected as a key technology for VoIP and multimedia streaming services over 3G and future mobile networks.

    A novel self-alignment process using the surface tension of the liquid resin for assembly of electronic or optoelectronic devices in 3-D space has been proposed. The vertical alignment can be controlled by using of metal sphere, reducing the necessary precise process control such as solder volumes and external forces, and allowing large tolerances in liquid volume and misalignment. Lateral alignment could be also achieved by making the liquid resin constrained on the 3-dimensional pads on chip and substrate. This study focused on the principle of self-alignment and final alignment accuracy. In addition, the possibility of self-alignment process was verified by analytic numerical method and scaled-up experiment. An average alignment accuracy of less than 0.25 µm has been obtained. It is thought that this process is effective for assembly simply at low process temperature, low cost and without flux in future assembly techniques.

    A noise suppression algorithm with high speech quality based on weighted noise estimation and MMSE STSA is proposed. The proposed algorithm continuously updates the estimated noise by weighted noisy speech in accordance with an estimated SNR. The spectral gain is modified with the estimated SNR so that it can better utilize the improvement in noise estimation. With a better noise estimate, a more correct SNR is obtained resulting in the enhanced speech with low distortion. Subjective evaluation results show that five-grade mean opinion scores of the new algorithm with and without a speech codec are improved by as much as 0.35 and 0.40 respectively, compared with either the original MMSE STSA or the EVRC noise suppression algorithm.

    This paper investigates the cell search time performance of our previously proposed three-step cell search method in a two-cell site environment by laboratory and field experiments supporting asynchronous cell site operation, which is one of the most notable features of wideband direct sequence code division multiple access (W-CDMA) mobile communications. The cell search methods used in the paper are based on the ongoing third generation partnership project (3GPP), in which our original scheme was refined with respect to several points in order to reduce the complexity of the receiver. The experimental results demonstrate that the method achieves the fast cell search time of less than one second in real multipath-fading channels. The cell search is accomplished in less than approximately 700 msec at 90% of the detection probability when 4.7% and 0.5% of the total transmit power of a cell site is assigned to the common pilot channel (CPICH) and synchronization channels (SCHs), respectively, in a two-cell site environment. We also elucidate that the cell search time at the detection probability of 90% using time switched transmit diversity (TSTD) is decreased by approximately 100 msec compared to that without TSTD in low-mobility environments such as the average vehicular speed of 5 km/h with a transmit power assignment of the CPICH of 4.7%.

  • A Pipelined Maximal-Sized Matching Scheme for High-Speed Input-Buffered Switches

    This paper proposes an innovative Pipeline-based Maximal-sized Matching scheduling approach, called PMM, for input-buffered switches. It dramatically relaxes the limitation of a single time slot for completing a maximal matching into any number of time slots. In the PMM approach, arbitration is operated in a pipelined manner, where K subschedulers are used. Each subscheduler is allowed to take more than one time slot for its matching. Every time slot, one of the subschedulers provides the matching result. We adopt an extended version of Dual Round-Robin Matching (DRRM), called iterative DRRM (iDRRM), as a maximal matching algorithm in a subscheduler. PMM maximizes the efficiency of the adopted arbitration scheme by allowing sufficient time for the number of iterations. We show that PMM preserves 100% throughput under uniform traffic and fairness for best-effort traffic of the non-pipelined adopted algorithm, while ensuring that cells from the same virtual output queue (VOQ) are transmitted in sequence. In addition, we confirm that the delay performance of PMM is not significantly degraded by increasing the pipeline degree, or the number of subschedulers, when the number of outstanding requests for each subscheduler from a VOQ is limited to 1.

    We have recently developed a programmable composite noise generator (P-CNG) which can easily control noise parameters such as average power, time-based amplitude probability distribution (APD), crossing rate distribution, occurrence frequency distribution and burst duration. Two applications of the P-CNG are demonstrated to show its usefulness. For the first application, Middleton's Class A noise is simulated. A method of setting parameters for Class A noise is demonstrated. The APD of P-CNG output is in good agreement with that of true Class A noise. In the second application, the P-CNG is used for subjective evaluation test (opinion test) of TV picture degradation. Five simple composite noise models with two kinds of APD are used. Other parameters such as average power are kept constant. Experimental results show that the envelope and APD of composite noises do not greatly influence the subjective evaluation. Finally the capabilities of the P-CNG are shown.

    In this paper, the co-existence of TDMA and W-CDMA spectrum sharing system (TDMA/W-CDMA overlaid system) with cellular architecture is discussed. In this system, both systems share the same frequency band to improve the spectrum efficiency. Overall rate, bit error ratio (BER) and spectrum efficiency of the system are calculated for the forward link (down-link) in the presence of AWGN channel. Taking into account the path loss and shadow fading loss in this system with cellular architecture, W-CDMA applying interference cancellation (IC) shows a substantial difference in spectrum efficiency, the overlaid system can provide a greater overall rate and higher spectrum efficiency than a single multiple access-based system such as TDMA system or W-CDMA system. The interference cancellation can significantly improve BER of the spectrum overlaid system.

    An L-band low quiescent current and low distortion SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) driver amplifier having a self base bias control circuit is described. Since the size of this bias circuit is small and it does not need an external control circuit, it is easy to be integrated with the driver amplifier on a single chip. According to the output power level, the self base bias control circuit, which is the combination of a constant base voltage circuit and p-metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) FET current mirror with a constant current source, automatically controls the base voltage, and allows low quiescent current at low output power level and low distortion at high output power level. The simulated results show that the driver amplifier having the self base bias control circuit achieves 1 dB power compression point (P1 dB) improvement of 2.4 dB compared with the driver amplifier having a conventional constant base voltage under the same quiescent current condition. The fabricated driver amplifier with the proposed bias circuit shows high P1 dB of 15.0 dBm with low quiescent current of 15.3 mA.

    This paper proposes a novel space diversity reception scheme suitable for packet-based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) wireless access systems that achieves large diversity gain by improving the accuracy of both carrier frequency synchronization and phase tracking. Phase tracking compensates the phase rotation caused by residual carrier frequency error and phase noise and is necessary for high data rate OFDM systems that use coherent detection. In the proposed scheme, the accuracy of carrier frequency synchronization is improved by combining the information of the carrier frequency offset detected on all diversity branches; the accuracy of phase tracking is improved by using pilot signals whose signal to noise ratio (SNR) is raised by maximal ratio combining of the pilot signals extracted from all branches. Computer simulation results show that the proposed scheme effectively improves the diversity gain even in severe environments such as those with low carrier to noise ratios (CNR) and large delay spreads.

    With the progress of integration of circuits and PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards), novel techniques have been required for verification of signal integrity. Noise analysis of the power/ground planes is one of the most important issues. This paper describes a high-speed simulator for PCBs which contain the interconnects with nonlinear terminations. This simulator is based on the environmental tool ASSIST (Assistant System for Simulation Study) constructed for development of the circuit simulators, and is combined with PRIMA (Passive Reduced-Order Interconnect Macromodeling Algorithm). In this simulator, an efficient implementation of PRIMA is considered with using a voltage-controlled current source (VCCS) model. Finally, this simulator is applied to the analysis of power/ground planes of the simple PCBs, and the validity is verified.

    The concept of the equi-phase curve is introduced for the cross-polarized channel case. It is proved that the equi-phase curves are a series of half circles on the Poincare sphere, and that all these curves have two common ends. Based on the introduced concept, this letter demonstrates the distribution of the received voltage's phases on the Poincare sphere. In addition, it is shown theoretically that the cross-polarized phase of the off-diagonal elements of a scattering matrix is unstable for most natural targets. Therefore, the cross-polarized phase information cannot be used for extracting target characteristics in polarimetric radar remote sensing.

    It have been one open and significant topic for real-time applications to enhance the processing-speed of Boltzmann machines for long time. One effective way of solution of this problem is the augmentation of probability of neurons' state move. In this paper, a novel method, called a rejectionless method, was proposed and introduced into the Boltzmann machines for this augmentation. This method has a feature of independence on the ratio of neurons' state move. The efficiency of this method for speed-up was confirmed with the experiments of TSP and graph problem.

    We propose a new type of microstrip line to waveguide transition fabricated on a single layer dielectric substrate. Impedance matching of the transition is achieved by controlling the size of a matching element and the length of an inserted microstrip line across a waveguide. As a result of experiments, low transmission loss of 0.4 dB is realized at the design frequency of 76.5 GHz. Bandwidth of the transition is numerically investigated by the finite element method. It is clarified that the bandwidth of the transition becomes wider as the cross section of the waveguide becomes smaller and twice as wide as that of a conventional microstrip patch antenna element fabricated on a dielectric substrate with the same parameters. In addition, the effect of errors in relative position between the dielectric substrate and the waveguide is also investigated. It becomes clear that degradation of transmission characteristics is caused by the shift of resonant frequency and keeps less than 0.1 dB for a manufacturing accuracy within 0.1 mm.

    This paper describes a new approach to the digital watermarking of motion pictures dedicatedly for the MPEG-4 video coding, which intends to enhance the error detection ability. The conventional method lacks not only the detection ability but also the compatibility with video decoders widely used today. Thus in this approach the digital watermarks are to be embedded into the quantized DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) coefficients for the error detection, where the prevention of the picture quality degradation is also attempted. Experimental results are shown to demonstrate that the error detection ability of the proposed approach is significantly improved, as compared with that of the conventional method, and that the degradation of the picture quality by the watermarking is extremely small.

    Polyurea thin films containing azo-based nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore were prepared by co-deposition of 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and 2,4-diamino-4'-nitroazobenzene monomers using the ionization-assisted method. The co-deposited film reacted to form polyurea after annealing in the air. The dichroic optical absorption spectra indicated the preferential orientation of dipole moments in the as-deposited film. The substrate bias voltage influenced the optical anisotropy. Maker fringe measurement showed that the films have NLO activity without the poling process.

    We investigated the electrical properties of hole transport materials such as TPD, α-NPD and m-MTDATA using in-situ field effect measurement. TPD, α-NPD and m-MTDATA films showed p-type semiconducting properties, and their electrical parameters such as conductivity, carrier mobility and carrier concentration were obtained. We also examined the effect of the substrate temperature during vacuum deposition and the thermal treatment after deposition, on the electrical parameters of the films. Experimental results showed that conductivity and carrier mobility decreased as the substrate temperature increased over the glass transition temperature. These decreases in conductivity and carrier mobility as a result of thermal treatment appear to be strongly related to the degradation mechanism of organic electroluminescent devices.

    This paper presents a child verb learning model mainly based on syntactic bootstrapping. The model automatically learns 4-5-year-old children's linguistic knowledge of verbs, including subcategorization frames and thematic roles, using a text in dialogue format. Subcategorization frame acquisition of verbs is guided by the assumption of the existence of nine verb prototypes. These verb prototypes are extracted based on syntactic bootstrapping and some psycholinguistic studies. Thematic roles are assigned by syntactic bootstrapping and other psycholinguistic hypotheses. The experiments are performed on the data from the CHILDES database. The results show that the learning model successfully acquires linguistic knowledge of verbs and also suggest that psycholinguistic studies of child verb learning may provide important hints for linguistic knowledge acquisition in natural language processing (NLP).

The controller is designed to ensure the controlled orbit be bounded and, meanwhile, the controlled system have positive Lyapunov exponents, which are achieved near a stable limit cycle of the system. One illustrative example is given.

    This paper presents a refined model for the fuzzy logic implementation of an available bit rate (ABR) flow control switch. This refined model is named fuzzy explicit rate (FUER) switch mechanism. FUER switch mechanism is designed to effectively perform congestion control on ABR traffic in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. The performance of FUER scheme is evaluated against those of two other explicit rate (ER)-based switch mechanisms using simulation in particular local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) environments. On the whole, FUER scheme performs better than the other schemes. Although it has the smallest control parameter set, it is a more efficient and scalable ER-based switch mechanism.
