  • Point-to-Multipoint Communication Protocol on Window-Based Network Presentation System

    In this paper, an efficient one-way point-to-multipoint communication protocol (PTMP) is proposed. The PTM protocol is helpful to distribute information to many workstations simultaneously and correctly. The PTM protocol is designed for network channels with low error possibility. The PTM protocol utilizes broadcast for data distributing. Re-transmission request for lost packet is returned to the server, and acknowledgment for correctly received packets is not returned to the server. We have applied the protocol to the network presentation system. The network presentation system is intended to display same graphical images to multiple workstations simultaneously on an X window system. This presentation system is able to provide services for at least forty X servers simultaneously, the capacity is limited to X server performance, except for pixmap drawing. For the case of pixmap drawing, the system capacity is limited to the network bandwidth. To solve network bandwidth problem, we combined PTM protocol with the network presentation system. With PTM protocol, system performance is improved and the use of network bandwidth is lowered.

    In the information engineering learning environment, there may be more than one solution to any given problem. We have developed CAMELOT using the Nominal Group Technique for group problem solving. This paper describes the collaborative learning system on the Internet using discussion model, the effectiveness of collaborative learning in modeling the entity-relationship diagram within the field of information engineering, and how to apply AI technologies such as rule-based reasoning and case-based reasoning to the pedagogical strategy. By using CAMELOT, each learner learns how to analyze through case studies and how to collaborate with his or her group in problem solving. As a result. We have found evidence for the effectiveness of collaborative learning, such as getting a deeper understanding by using CAMELOT than by individual learning, because they can reach better solutions through discussion, tips from other learners, examination of one another's individual solutions, and understanding alternative solutions using case-based reasoning.

    Many efforts are currently underway to design wideband mobile communication systems. In this letter, we clarify the received signal level characteristics for wideband mobile radio channels in line-of-sight (LOS) microcells. We conduct several urban-area field experiments to measure the received signal levels for various receiver bandwidths from 300 kHz to 30 MHz and the power delay profile. The experimental results show that the fading depth of the received signal decreases as the normalized rms delay spread, defined as the product of receiver bandwidth and rms delay spread, increases. These results are useful in designing wideband microcell systems for urban areas.

  • A Built-In Self-Test for ADC and DAC in a Single-Chip Speech CODEC

    Built-in self-test (BIST) has been applied to test an analog to digital converter (ADC) and a digital to analog converter (DAC) embedded in a DSP-core ASIC. The eight performance characteristics of the ADC and the DAC designed in accordance with the ITU-T recommendations are measured using the BIST. Three of the eight characteristics - the attenuation/frequency distortion, the variation of gain with input level, and the signal-to-total distortion - have been evaluated and the measured results have shown good agreement with measured results by conventional tests. In the BIST operation, the DSP-core generates input stimulus and analyzes output response by control of the self-test program, The sizes of the self-test program and coefficient data are 822 words of the IROM and 384 words of the data ROM, respectively. This area overhead is less than 0.5% of total chip area. Test-time by the BIST is reduced to approximately 3.2 seconds, which is one-tenth that of conventional testing. The mixed-signal DSP-core ASIC is testable with only logic test equipment, and as a result, test-cost - that is test investment and test-time - is reduced compared with conventional test methods.

  • Microwave Energy Transmission System for Microrobot

    The majority of independent locomotion microrobots pack batteries as their energy source. However, because the energy that can be stored in a battery is proportional to its volume, the operating time becomes shorter as the robot becomes smaller. To solve this problem the energy must be supplied from outside by wireless transmission. We propose a microwave energy transmission system for microrobots in metal piping. Because microwave is rectified and converted in the form of electric energy in this system, we developed a receiving antenna for microrobots in piping and a microwave rectifying circuit to generate high voltage. These were loaded on a microrobot, tested to drive a locomotive mechanism, and the efficiency of the proposed system was confirmed.

    A formal system-level synthesis model for the concurrent object-oriented design of parallel computer systems, called Multi-token Object-oriented Bi-directional net (MOBnet), is proposed. The MOBnet model extends the standard Petri net by defining (1) multiple tokens to represent different kinds of synthesis control information, (2) object-oriented nodes (places) to denote the system parts under synthesis, and (3) bi-directional arcs to model the design completion check and synthesis rollback operations. In this paper, we first show that MOBnet can serve as a pre-fabrication design methodology analysis tool in ways such as class hierarchy construction, design specification comparison, reachability analysis, and concurrent process management and analysis. We then formally prove MOBnet to be a valid model for concurrent synthesis and give experimental application examples to verify. Finally, solution schemes for the design completion check and synthesis rollback problems are formally validated by analyzing the dynamic behavior of MOBnet, and experimentally illustrated through examples.

  • An Amplitude Limiting CDM by Using Majority Logic

    This study proposes an amplitude limiting type spread spectrum communication to be applied to extremely low power radio wave communicaion and evaluates capability of the code division multiplex. First, changes in output from the correlation device, maximum power, and in allowable noise power are compared by computer simulation for the case where the number of multiplex channels is increased. Second, possible relationship between noise intensity and error rate is measured by actual loading experiments using a device developed for trial purpose. Third, majority decision logic is proposed for the said device to realize amplitude limiting type code division multiplex easily. When the amplitude is limited, the maximum power can be controlled at about 2 dB, and channels with more than half of the number of spread sign can be used. It is revealed that, in the spread spectrum, alteration of the number of multiplex channels is made easy by application of this method.

  • Fine Surface Finishing Method for 3-Dimensional Micro Structures

    A new finishing method using an advanced ECM assisted by fine abrasive grains was developed, in order to smooth and finish surfaces of 3-dimensional micro components used in micromachines. With the method, a fine surface of selected micro-area, which is not obtained by micro-EDM nor conventional ECM, was obtained in a few minutes. We also developed an advanced machine which has a performance of making 3-D complicated micro structures with fine surfaces by the combination of micro-EDM and the developed finishing method. The performance is achieved by a sequential process from the micro-EDM to the finishing without handling workpiece. Using the new machine, we obtained a high precision shaft with a mirror-like surface. The result is satisfactory to apply the method to making a cylindrical substrate for a rotor of a micro wobble motor. The machining process combined the micro-EDM and the new finishing will be applied to producing micro components such as mechanical parts, mirrors and molding dies.

  • A 156Mb/s CMOS Clock Recovery Circuit for Burst-Mode Transmission

    This paper describes a new timing circuit design technique for asynchronous burst-mode data transmission such as Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH). It enables to the handling of asynchronous burst-mode data. Without an external reference clock signal, it can make a quick extraction of clock signal from received data packets using a "gating-timing circuit" and a "burst PLL." The gating-timing circuit employs bit gating for a quick phase response, and the burst PLL employs frame gating for quick frequency adjustment to differences between packets and clock extraction. This circuit has a simple configuration without any external oscillators, which reduces both cost and power. A fabricated 0.5-µm CMOS IC exhibits instantaneous response within one bit for 156 Mb/s asynchronous data packets.

    It is necessery to investigate the buckling mechanism in order to obtaining good performance from various sensors composed of resistors and microbridges or membranes. Especially for flow sensors, a convex formed bridge has an advantage over a flat or concave bridge with respect to heat transfer coefficient. We have fabricated various shapes of bridges and have prepared SiNx sputtered films as the support films of microbridges and Pt sputtered or evaporated films as resistors. We have achieved deformation control for both the longitudinal axis and transverse axis of Pt/SiNx double layered microbridges by appropriate selection of the total residual stress of Pt/SiNx structures and of the stress gradient between the Pt film and SiNx film. The deformation direction of the longitudinal axis of bridges for the beam bridge (Type ) are all the same as that of cantilevers and may be predicted via the stress gradient between the Pt and SiNx filmes of the bridges. The deflection of the transverse axis of the table bridge supported by four beams (Type ) changes linearly with the total stress of the Pt/SiNx structure and the deformation changes for the transverse axis are the same as that of completely free films as predicted from the stress gradient between the Pt film and the SiNx film. The interesting result is that the deformation direction for the longitudinal axis of Type is opposite to that of Type with the same film structure. We discuss the reason for this opposition via differences in the progress of the anisotropic etching. We consider that this result will expand the range of manufacturable shapes and film structures of microbridges.

  • A Low Power CMOS Dual Modulus Prescaler for Frequency Synthesizers

    A low power dual modulus prescaler for frequency synthesizers has been designed in a standard 1.2 µm digital CMOS process using enhancement source coupled logic (ESCL). Being a differential low amplitude current mode logic, ESCL has two interesting characteristics for this design besides low power consumption: the low noise performance, that allows this circuit to be on the same chip with sensitive analog circuitry, and the ability to run with a 200 mV sinusoidal signal as generated from an LC oscillator without the need of a clock amplifier. At 195 MHz and 3 V supply, the current consumption of the prescaler is as low as 289 µA, while maximum operating frequencies of 910 MHz at 5 V and 650 MHz at 3 V are achieved.

  • Applications of a High Density LED Array Unit Fabricated on a Silicon Microreflector

    A light emitting diode (LED) array unit for use as a light source in isolated power transmission and a display panel was fabricated using LED chips mounted on a silicon microreflector. The reflector was formed on a (100) silicon wafer by anisotropic chemical etching. An isolated power supply consisting of an infrared LED array unit and single silicon crystal solar cells had a maximum transmission efficiency of 2.3%. The silicon microreflector absorbs the heat generated by the LED chips and improves their light directive characteristics. A small, high-resolution, full color LED display panel can also be constructed using LED array units fabricated on silicon microreflectors. The LEDs in a unit are arrayed with a matrix structure and the electric contacts between the LED chips, the reflector and the upper cover glass are formed using conducting silver resin.

  • Development of High Voltage Photovoltaic Micro-Devices for Driving Micro Actuators

    Photovoltaic devices capable of generating more than 200 volts with an area of 1 cm2 have been developed for directly driving microactuators such as piezoelectric or electrostatic actuators. The micro-devices interconnect 285 micro cells (unit cell size: about 0.5 mm 2.0 mm) in series, and have an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 207 volts, a short circuit current (Isc) of 36.6 µA, a maximum output power (Pmax) of 4.65 mW and a fill factor (F.F.) of 0.615 under AM (Air Mass) 1.5 and 100 mW/cm2 illumination. This voltage is the highest in the world for the area of 1 cm2. The series connection is precisely processed by a focused laser beam, thereby significantly reducing the area needed for device connections. It has been confirmed that a piezoelectric polymer can be directly driven by the electrical output in evaluating the potential of the devices to be used as a microactuator's power source.

  • Substrate Noise Reduction Using Active Guard Band Filters in Mixed-Signal Integrated Circuits

    A method called "active guard band filtering" is proposed for reducing substrate noise in analog and digital mixed-signal integrated circuits. A noise cancellation signal having an inverse value to the substrate noise is actively input into a guard band to suppress the substrate noise. An operational amplifier produces the noise cancellation signal based upon the substrate noise detected by one guard band and feeds this signal through another quard band into the substrate. This is done within the amplifier feedback loop, which includes the guard bands and the substrate. The noise suppression effect was measured by using 0.8µm CMOS test chip. Using active guard band filtering suppressed substrate noise to -40 dB of the original non-canceled noise level at 8 MHz. The noise suppression effect was also observed at frequencies up to 20MHz, with an external operational amplifier. The influence of parasitic impedance was found to be a key factor in noise suppression. An active guard band filter with an on-chip noise cancellation circuit will be even more effective for high frequencies, because it eliminates parasitic impedance due to external components.

  • An Analog Two-Dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform Processor for Focal-Plane Image Compression

    This paper presents an analog 2-dimensional discrete cosine transform (2-D DCT) processor for focal-plane image compression. The on-chip analog 2-D DCT processor can process directly the analog signal of the CMOS image sensor. The analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) is preformed after the 2-D DCT, and this leads to efficient AD conversion of video signals. Most of the 2-D DCT coefficients can be digitized by a relatively low-resolution ADC or a zero detector. The quantization process after the 2-D DCT can be realized by the ADC at the same time. The 88-point analog 2-D DCT processor is designed by switched-capacitor (SC) coefficient multipliers and an SC analog memory based on 0.35µm CMOS technology. The 2-D DCT processor has sufficient precision, high processing speed, low power dissipation, and small silicon area. The resulting smart image sensor chips with data compression and digital transmission functions are useful for the high-speed image acquisition devices and portable digital video camera systems.

    In accordance with the diffusion of applications, such as the Desk Top Publishing system, the Document Formatting system and the Document Editing system, it is easy to make a document by using a computer. However, as for allocating the diagrams (figures and tables), there are few document processing systems able to allocate diagrams on the appropriate places automatically. In a document processing system it is a very important issue to allocate diagrams on the most suitable places. This paper defines the criteria for allocating diagrams on the suitable positions by investigating published papers. These criteria concern 1) the order of diagrams to be allocated, 2) the stability of the diagram allocations, 3) the distance between the diagram and the location of the corresponding first reference in the text, 4) the allocation balance of diagrams in a text, 5) the restricted areas where diagrams shouldn't be allocated, 6) the allocation priorities between diagrams of different width. Moreover, this paper proposes a method for deciding the diagram allocations satisfying the above criteria automatically and fast on document formatting systems. In this case we have limited its application to one type of ducuments, which is papers. Especially, this method can skillfully allocate diagrams of different width on the page by reallocating the diagrams and texts within it, and can allocate diagrams over the document uniformly.

    In this paper, we analyze the multiple access interference of a variable processing gain DS/CDMA system and define discrete partial crosscorrelation functions. We also evaluate the bit error rate of the system using Gaussian approximation and bounding technique. Three kinds of spreading codes (long, short, and random codes) are considered in the analysis of the system. It is shown that the bit error rate of a user is not relevant to the processing gain of interfering users: it is relevant only to the processing gain of the user, transmitted powers, PN sequences, and spreading codes. The performance of short codes turns out to be better than that of long and random codes as in other systems.

  • Fabrication of Micro-Pipes and Their Applications to Single-Mode Fiber Switching and Splicing

    This paper describes the fabrication of micro-pipes and their applications to splicing parts and optical switches using single-mode fibers. Micro-pipes having almost the same inner diameter of bare fiber (125 µm) and lengths of around 5 mm are successfully mass-produced by using micromachining technology. We fabricate various kinds of metal pipes such as Au, Cu, Ni, and an FeNi alloy by selecting the appropriate electro-plating bath. We use an Au micro-pipe having a small slitted portion running along its axis (slitted micro-pipe) to splice single-mode fibers. We also use an FeNi alloy micro-pipe to construct a single-mode fiber switch. These new single-mode fiber devices employing micro-pipes show excellent optical and mechanical characteristics. Splicing losses are in the range of 0.2-0.4 dB. The developed 1 2 latching type single-mode fiber switches exhibit a low insertion loss of 0.35 dB, a minimum switching speed of 2 ms with a driving power of 9 mW, and stable operation for more than 108 switchings without damage. A practical application of the developed switch for testing optical devices is also demonstrated.

  • Stiffness of Measurement System and Significant Figures of Displacement which are Required to Interpret Adhesional Force Curves

    Force curves obtained from an elastic contact theory are shown and compared with experimental results. In the elastic contact theory, a pin-on-disk contact is assumed and the following interaction are taken into consideration; (i) elastic deformation, (ii) the specific energy of adhesion in the area of the contact, which is expressed as the difference between the surface energies and the interface energy, (iii) the long-range interaction outside the area of contact, assuming the additivity of the Lennard-Jones type potential, and (iv) another elastic term for the measurement system such as the cantilever stiffness of an atomic force microscope (AFM). In the limit when the stiffness is infinite, the theory conforms to Muller-Yushchenko-Derjaguin (MYD) theory. In the limit when the surface-surface interaction is negligible, the theory conforms to the analytical theory by Takahashi-Mizuno-Onzawa. In the limit when the stiffness is infinite and the long-range interaction outside the area of contact is negligible, the theory conforms to Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory. All parameters and all equations are normalized and the normalized force curve is obtained as the functional of only two parameters; (1) the normalized stiffness of the measurement system, and (2) the normalized distance which is used in the expression of the Lennard-Jones potential. The force-displacement plots are converted into force-penetration plots.
