  • Extraction of Glossiness of Curved Surfaces by the Use of Spatial Filter Simulating Retina Function

    Although the perception of gloss is based on human visual perception, some methods for extracting glossiness, in contrast to human ability, have been proposed involving curved surfaces. Glossiness defined in these methods, however, does not correspond with psychological glossiness perceived by the human eye over the wide range from relatively low gloss to high gloss. In addition, the obtained glossiness in these methods changes remarkably when the curvature radius of the high-gloss object becomes larger than 10mm. In reality, psychological glossiness does not change. These methods, furthermore, are available only for spherical objects. A new method for extracting glossiness is proposed in this study. For the new definition of glossiness, a spatial filter which simulates human retina function is utilized. The light intensity distribution of the curved object is convoluted with the spatial filter. The maximum value Hmax of the convoluted distribution has a high correlation with psychological glossiness Gph. From the relationship between Gph and Hmax, new glossiness Gf is defined. The gloss-extraction equipment consists of a light source, TV camera, an image processor and a personal computer. Cylinders with the curvature radii of 3-30 mm are used as the specimens in addition to spherical balls. In all specimens, a strong correlation, with a correlation coefficient of more than 0.97, has been observed between Gf and Gph over a wide range. New glossiness Gf conforms to Gph even if the curvature radius in more than 10 mm. Based on these findings, it is found that this method for extracting glossiness is useful for the extraction of glossiness of spherical and cylindrical objects over a wide range from relatively low gloss to high gloss.

  • Throttled-Buffer Asynchronous Switch for ATM

    Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) shared buffer switches have numerous advantages, but have the principal disadvantage that all switch traffic must pass through the bottleneck of a single memory. To achieve the most efficient usage of this bottleneck, the shared buffer is made blockable, resulting in a switch architecture that we call "throttled-buffer", which has several advantageous properties. Shared buffer efficiency is maximized while decreasing both capacity and power requirements. Asynchronous operation is possible, whereby peak link data rates are allowed to approach the aggregate switch rate. Multicasting is also efficiently supported. The architecture and operation of this low-cost switch are described in detail.

  • Stability of an Active Two Port Network in terms of S Parameters

    The stability conditions and stability factors of terminated active two port networks are investigated. They are expressed with the S parameters of active devices and the radii and centers of the circles defined by source and load terminations. The stability conditions are applied to specific cases. Some of the results correspond to the stability conditions expressed in Z, Y, H or G parameters and one of the other stability conditions of terminated two port network is similar to that for passive terminations which is expressed in S parameters. The various results derived in this paper are very useful for checking the stability of amplifiers, because both stability conditions and stability factors are simply calculated by using the S parameters without using the graphical method or transforming S parameters to Z, Y, H or G parameters. These stability conditions can be also used even if negative input or output resistance appears and even if the real part of source or load immittance is negative.

  • Water Desorption Control of Interlayer Dielectrics to Reduce MOSFET Hot Carrier Degradation

    Water desorption from interlayer dielectric, spin-on-glass and SiO2 film deposited with tetraethylorthosilicate and O3, was controlled in order to reduce MOSFET hot-carrier degradation by using plasma SiO2 film as a water blocking layer. Two kinds of plasma SiO2 film were used in this study: SiH4 plasma SiO2 film deposited with SiH4 and N2O, and TEOS plasma SiO2 film deposited with TEOS and O2. Thermal desorption spectroscopy was used to study water desorption. Reduction of water desorption was obtained using plasma SiO2 film with water blocking ability; this reduction of water desorption resulted in suppression of the MOSFET hot-carrier degradation. The water blocking ability was obtained by low pressure deposition for SiH4 plasma SiO2 and low flow rate ratio of TEOS to O2 deposition for TEOS plasma SiO2. Water absorption studies of plasma SiO2 film using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that water blocking ability is associated with small amount of water absorption both in SiH4 plasma SiO2 film and in TEOS plasma SiO2 film. Consequently, it is considered that the water blocking ability, as well as water absorption, of plasma SiO2 film depends on porosity.

  • Evaluation of Plasma Damage to Gate Oxide

    Plasma damage to gate oxide is studied using the test structures with various length antennas. It is shown that the plasma damage to gate oxide can be monitored quantitatively by measuring charge to breakdown (QBD). From the QBD measurements, it is confirmed that the degradation occurs in the duration of over-etching but not in the duration of main etching. The breakdown spots in gate oxide are detected by a photon emission method. The breakdown are caused by plasma damage at the LOCOS edge. A LOCOS structure plays an important role for the degradation by the plasma damage.

    The use of computers with private networks has accelerated the electronic storage of business information in office systems. With the rapid progress in processing capability and small sizing of the computer world, private networks are going to be more intelligent. The utilization of shared information is a key issue in modern organizations, in order to increase the productivity of white-collar workers. In the CSCW research field, it is said that informal and unstructured information is important in group work contexts but difficult to locate in a large organization. Many researchers are paying particular attention to the importance of support systems for such information. These kinds of information are called Organizational memory or Group Memory. Our research focuses on knowledge propagation with private networks in the organization. This means emphasis on the process; with which organized information or the ability to use information is circulated throughout the organization. Knowledge propagation has three issues: knowledge transmission, destination locating and source locating. To cope with these issues we developed FISH, which stands for Flexible Information Sharing and Handling system. FISH was designed to provide cooperative information sharing in a group work context and to explore knowledge propagation. FISH stores fragmental information as cards with multiple keywords and content. This paper discusses a three-layered model that describes computer supported knowledge transmission. Based on this model, three issues are discussed regarding knowledge propagation. FISH and its two-year experiment are described and knowledge propagation is explored based on the results of this experiment.

    There has been growing interest in Broadband ISDN (B-ISDN) based on ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) technologies, since ATM is expected to support a wide range of applications through high-speed and flexible multimedia communication capabilities. This paper reviews and discusses technical issues on multimedia communication protocols and services from the integration points of view of computer and communication technologies. An ISDN-based distributed multimedia and multi-party desktop conference system called MERMAID is introduced as an example which offers highly-sophisticated functions for remote collaborations among multiple users. This system, which was developed in early 1989 and has been used for daily research work since then, involves B-ISDN key technologies related to multimedia and multicast protocols, and computer architecture for groupware applications.

  • Analysis of Dynamic Bandwidth Control for LAN Interconnection through ATM Networks

    In this paper, we study a dynamic bandwidth control which is expected an effective use of network resources in transmitting highly bursty traffic generated by, e.g., interconnected LAN systems. First, a new LAN traffic model is proposed in which correlation of not only packet interarrival times but also packet lengths are considered. An analytic model for a LAN-ATM gateway is next introduced. It employs the dynamic bandwidth control using the proposed LAN traffic model and some performance measures are derived by it. The analytic model takes into account the probability that a bandwidth increase request may be rejected. Finally, some numerical examples are provided using the analysis method and performance comparisons between the dynamic and fixed bandwidth controls are made. As a result, it is quantitatively indicated that () if the equivalent bandwidth is used in average, the dynamic bandwidth control keeps packet and cell loss rates one to two orders lower than the fixed bandwidth control, () when the more strict QOS in terms of loss rate is requested, the dynamic bandwidth control can become more effective.

  • Network Configuration Identification for ATM-LAN

    This paper discusses a way of identifying the network configuration of ATM-LANs, which are composed of a number of ATM hubs. In general, a Network Management System (NMS) sets and gets the necessary data to and from the network elements. In managing an ATM-LAN, the ATM connection between the NMS and each network element, namely the ATM hub, must be established in order to get and set the necessary data. This forms a remarkable contrast with conventional LANs such as the IEEE802.3 LAN, which is a shared media network and enables broadcast communication without setting up any connection. This paper proposes a new protocol and a procedure that establishes the ATM connection between the NMS and each ATM hub, while identifying the overall network configuration. First, this paper makes clear the peculiarity of the ATM-LAN in terms of automatically identifying the network configuration. Next, the identification protocol that achieves the required properties is precisely explained. Then, the proposed identification protocol is evaluated in terms of required bandwidth and identification time.

  • ATM Transport with Dynamic Capacity Control for Interconnection of Private Networks

    This paper deals with methods for interconnection between two local private networks that are geographically separated. A scheme is first presented to chain low bit-rate physical circuits into one logical circuit, over which ATM cells are transmitted as if there is one circuit with a high bit-rate capacity. In particular, use of existing low bit-rate circuits, e.g., 384/1536 kbit/s PDH leased line services and N-ISDN switched channels, is considered. The paper discusses two methods to permit chaining of physical circuits, and identifies their advantages and applications. By using the ATM-based circuit-chaining method, dynamic capacity control of the interconnection is then introduced with the use of an ATM-based rate adaptation. This is intended to provide a flexible and cost-effective capacity control compared to the existing TDM-based control. It is also possible to realize non-stop operation of changing capacity by establishment and release of chained circuits, which will lead to high reliability and robustness of private networks. Finally, delay characteristics introduced by the method are evaluated based on a computer simulation which gives a short and acceptable delay.

    IC performance simulation for statistical purpose is usually very time-consuming since the scale and complexity of IC have increased greatly in recent years. A common approach for reduction of simulation cost is aimed at the nature of simple modeling instead of actual circuit performance simulations. In this paper,a stochastic interpolation model (SIM) scheme is proposed which overcomes the drawbacks of the existing polynomial-based approximation schemes. First,the dependence of the R2press statistic upon a parameter in SIM is taken into account and by maximizing R2press this enables SIM to achieve the best approximation accuracy in the given sample points without any assumption on the sample data. Next, a sequential sampling strategy based on variance analysis is described to effectively construct SIM during its update process. In each update step, a new sample point with a maximal value of variance is added to the former set of the sample points. The update process will be continued until the desired approximation accuracy is reached. This would eventually lead to the realization of SIM with a quite small number of sample points. Finally, the coefficient of variance is introduced as another criterion for approximation accuracy check other than the R2press statistic. The effectiveness of presented implementation scheme is demonstrated by several numerical examples as well as a statistical circuit analysis example.

    A C1 interpolation scheme for constructing surface patch on n-sided region (n5, 6) is presented. The constructed surface patch matches the given boundary curves and cross-boundary slopes on the sides of the n-sided region (n5, 6). This scheme has relatively simple construction, and offers one degree of freedom for adjusting interior shape of the constructed interpolation surface. The polynomial precision set of the scheme includes all the polynomials of degree three or less. The experiments for comparing the proposed scheme with two schemes proposed by Gregory and Varady respectively and also shown.

    A technique to realize a transconductance which is relatively insensitive over temperature variations is reported. Simulation results with MOS and bipolar transistors indicate substantial improvement in temperature insensitivity over a range exceeding 100 degrees Celsius. It should find useful applications in analog LSI/VLSI systems operating over a wide range of temperature.

    A new phase shift lithography method has been developed that allows different integrated circuit features to be focused on different optical planes that conform to the wafer surface topography. In principle, each pattern in the circuit has its own unique focal plane. The direction and magnitude of each focus shift is determined by the design of the shifter patterns. This method is applicable for use with conventional opaque mask patterns and unattenuated phase shift patterns. The characteristics of this multiple-focus-plane technique have been evaluated experimentally and confirmed theoretically through mathematical modeling using TCC optical imaging theory. Experiments were conducted using i-line positive resist processes for different phase-shift patterns. This paper discusses the effects of changes in phase shift and recommends practical mask design approaches.

    From the viewpoint of customer's satisfaction, precise information and rapid action are very important when complaints about call connection failures or service quality deterioration come from customers. It is indispensable to the propose that operators are supported by an operation system which stores and processes each customer's information, their complaint's histories, network failure status and call connection detail data. This paper shows functions and Human Machine Interface (HMI) of Customer Complaint Handling System (CCHS). This system can handle a customer's complaint by an electric ticket and necessary information is automatically collected and shown on the ticket.

    Directional dry etching of Tantalum is described X-ray lithography absorber patterns. Experiments are carried out using both reactive ion etching in CBrF3-based plasma and electron-cyclotron-resonance ion-stream etching in Cl2-based plasma. Ta absorber patterns with perpendicular sidewalls cannot be obtained by RIE when only CBrF3 gas is used as the etchant. While adding CH4 to CBrF3 effectively improves the undercutting of Ta patterns, it deteriorates etching stability because of the intensive deposition effect of CH4 fractions. By adding an Ar/CH4 mixture gas to CBrF3, it is possible to use RIE to fabricate 0.2-µm Ta absorber patterns with perpendicular sidewalls. ECR ion-stream etching is investigated to obtain high etching selectivity between Ta and SiO2 (etching mask)/SiN (membrane). Adding O2 to the Cl2 etchant improves undercutting without remarkably decreasing etching selectivity. Furthermore, an ECR ion-stream etching method is developed to stably etch Ta absorber patterns finer than 0.2µm. This is successfully applied to X-ray lithography mask fabrication for LSI test devices.

  • Monte Carlo Simulation of Ion Implantation for Three-Dimensional Structures Using an Octree

    A fully three-dimensional simulation tool for modeling the ion implantation in arbitrarily complex three-dimensional structures is described. The calculation is based on the Monte Carlo (MC) method. For MC simulations of realistic three-dimensional structures the key problem is the CPU-time consumption which is primarily caused by two facts. (1) A large number of ion trajectories (about 107) has to be simulated to get results with reasonable low statistical noise. (2) The point location problem is very complex in the three-dimensional space. Solutions for these problems are given in this paper. To reduce the CPU-time for calculating the numerous ion trajectories a superposition method is applied. For the point location (geometry checks) different possibilities are presented. Advantages and disadvantages of the conventional intersection method and a newly introduced octree method are discussed. The octree method was found to be suited best for three-dimensional simulation. Using the octree the CPU-time required for the simulation of one ion trajectory could be reduced so that it only needs approximately the same time as the intersection method in the two-dimensional case. Additionally, the data structure of the octree simplifies the coupling of this simulation tool with topography simulators based on a cellular method. Simulation results for a three-dimensional trench structure are presented.

  • Channel-Grouping Methods on Go-Back-N ARQ Scheme in Multiple-Parallel-Channel System

    We consider a communication system in which a transmitter is connected to a receiver through parallel channels, and the Go-Back-N ARQ scheme is used to handle transmission errors. A packet error on one channel results in retransmission of packets assigned to other channels under the Go-Back-N ARQ scheme. Therefore, the channel-grouping (a grouped-channel is used to transmit the same packet at a time), would affect the throughput performance. We analyze the throughput performance, and give a tree-algorithm to efficiently search for the optimal channel-grouping which makes the throughput to become maximum. Numerical results show that the throughput is largely improved by using the optimal channel-grouping.

  • Experimental Discussion on Measurement of Mental Workload--Evaluation of Mental Workload by HRV Measures--

    The aim of this study is to evaluate mental workload (MWL) quantitatively by HRV (Heart Rate Variability) measures. The electrocardiography and the respiration curve were recorded in five different epochs (1) during a rest condition and (2) during mental arithmetic tasks (addition). In the experiment, subjects added two numbers. The work levels (figures of the number in the addition) were set to one figure, two figures, three figures and four figures. The work level had effects on the mean percent correct, the number of answers and the mean processing time. The psychological evaluation on mental workload obtained by the method of paired comparison increased with the work level. Among the statistical HRV measures, the number of peak and trough waves could distinguish between the rest and the mental loading. However, mental workload for each work level was not evaluated quantitatively by the measure. The HRV measures were also calculated from the power spectrum estimated by the autoregressive (AR) model identification. The ratio of the low frequency power to the high frequency power increased linearly with the work level. In conclusion, the HRV measures obtained by the AR power spectrum analysis were found to be sensitive to changes of mental workload.

  • A Numerical Simulation of the Effects of the Actual Lip Geometry on Acoustic Fields by a Three-Dimensional FEM

    This paper describes an implementation of the finite element method to examine the effects of actual lip shape on the sound radiation. A three-dimensional finite element approach by Galerkin method was used. The accuracy of the calculation of finite element method for the sound radiation was tested by comparing it with the exact solutions for a circular piston radiator on an infinite baffle. Using a set of finite element models of the vocal tract, we calculated the responses to a pure tone input and the sound fields over the frequency range of 100 Hz-7 kHz. The transfer functions are examined in detail for vowels /a/ and /i/ when the shape of the actual lips is simplified as a planeradiation surface. The effects of lip shape on the distribution of sound pressures are also shown in both the vocal tract and the surrounding space of the mouth opening.
