Fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication systems employ beamforming technology using massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) to improve the reception quality and spectrum efficiency within a cell. Meanwhile, coordinated beamforming among multiple base stations is an effective approach to improving the spectrum efficiency at the cell edges, in which massive MIMO is deployed at geographically distant base stations and beamforming control is conducted in a cooperative manner. Codebook-based beamforming is a method for realizing multi-cell coordinated beamforming, in which each base station selects one of multiple beams that are predefined in a codebook. In codebook-based beamforming, it is important to design an efficient codebook that takes into account the beam allocation and the number of beams. In general, the larger the number of beams defined in a codebook, the more finely tuned the beam control can be and a greater improvement in spectrum efficiency can be expected. However, it requires a huge signal processing to optimize the beam combinations with a large number of beams by coordinated beamforming. This paper proposes a novel codebook design that efficiently assigns beam directions and widths in a vertical plane. Computer simulations showed that the proposed codebook performs as well as the conventional method while requiring fewer beam combinations.

To achieve smooth beam injection in operation of synchrotron radiation facilities, pulsed multipole magnet beam injectors are developed. It is found that the developed beam injector causes serious disturbance in the circulating storage beam in the Aichi synchrotron radiation center, and that such the unexpected disturbance of the storage beam may be caused by eddy current induced on thin titanium coating inside a beam duct. In this work, the induced eddy current on the titanium layer is evaluated quantitatively by numerical simulations and improvement for the developed beam injector is discussed based on the numerical simulation.

Near-field beamforming has played an important role in many scenarios such as radar imaging and acoustic detection. In this paper, the near-field beamforming is implemented in the time modulated array with the harmonic. The beam pattern with a low sidelobe level in precise position is achieved by controlling the switching sequence in time modulated cross array. Numerical results verify the correctness of the proposed method.

Line detection is the fundamental image processing technique which has various applications in the field of computer vision. For example, lane keeping required to realize autonomous vehicles can be implemented based on line detection technique. For such purposes, however, low detection latency and power consumption are essential. Using hardware-based stream processing is considered as an effective way to achieve such properties since it eliminates the need of storing the whole frame into energy-consuming external memory. In addition, adopting FPGAs enables us to keep flexibility of software processing. The line segment detector (LSD) is the algorithm based on intensity gradient, and performs better than the well-known Hough transform in terms of processing speed and accuracy. However, implementing the original LSD on FPGAs as a pipeline structure is difficult mainly because of its iterative region growing approach. Therefore, we propose a simple and stream-friendly line segment detection algorithm based on the concept of LSD. The whole system is implemented on a Xilinx Zynq-7000 XC7Z020-1CLG400C FPGA without any external memory. Evaluation results reveal that the implemented system is able to detect line segments successfully and is compact with 7.5% of Block RAM and less than 7.0% of the other resources used, while maintaining 60 fps throughput for VGA videos. It is also shown that the system is power-efficient compared to software processing on CPUs.

This paper presents a novel cooperative recording scheme in networked PVRs based on P2P networks to increase storage efficiency compared with when PVRs operate independently of each other, while maintaining program availability to a similar degree. We employ an erasure coding technique to guarantee data availability of recorded programs in P2P networks. We determine the data redundancy degree of recorded programs so that the system can support all the concurrent streaming requests for them and maintain as much availability as needed. We also present how to assign recording tasks to PVRs and playback the recorded programs without performance degradation. We show that our proposed scheme improves the storage efficiency significantly, compared with when PVRs do not cooperate with each other, while keeping the playbackability of each request similarly.

In this letter, firstly, a novel adaptive beamformer using independent component analysis (ICA) algorithm is proposed. By this algorithm, the ambiguity of amplitude and phase resulted from blind source separation is removed utilizing the special structure of array manifolds matrix. However, there might exist great calibration error when the powers of interferences are far larger than that of desired signal at many applications such as sonar, radio astronomy, biomedical engineering and earthquake detection. As a result, this will lead to a significant reduction in separation performance. Then, a new method based on the combination of ICA and primary component analysis (PCA) is proposed to recover the desired signal's amplitude under strong interference. Finally, computer simulation is carried out to indicate the effectiveness of our methods. The simulation results show that the proposed methods can obtain higher SNR and more accurate power estimation of desired signal than diagonal loading sample matrix inversion (LSMI) and worst-case performance optimization (WCPO) method.

Construction of multiple output functions is one of the most important problems in the design and analysis of stream ciphers. Generally, such a function has to be satisfied with several criteria, such as high nonlinearity, resiliency and high algebraic degree. But there are mutual restraints among the cryptographic parameters. Finding a way to achieve the optimization is always regarded as a hard task. In this paper, by using the disjoint linear codes and disjoint spectral functions, two classes of resilient multiple output functions are obtained. It has been proved that the obtained functions have high nonlinearity and high algebraic degree.

This letter proposes an adaptive beamforming switch algorithm for realistic massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems through prototypes. It is analyzed and identified that a rigid single-mode beamforming regime is hard to maintain superior performance all the time due to no adaption to the inevitable channel variation in practice. In order to cope with this practical issue, the proposed systematic beamforming mechanism is investigated to enable dynamic selection between minimum mean-squared error and grid-of-beams beamforming algorithms, which improves system downlink performance, including throughput and block error rate. The significant performance benefits and realistic feasibility have been validated through the field tests in live networks and theoretical analyses. Meanwhile, the adaptive beamforming switch algorithm is applicable to both fourth and fifth generation time-division duplexing cellular communication system using massive-MIMO technology.

In this study, we propose a mechanism called adaptive failsoft control to address peak traffic in mobile live streaming, using a chasing playback function. Although a cache system is avaliable to support the chasing playback function for live streaming in a base station and device-to-device communication, the request concentration by highlight scenes influences the traffic load owing to data unavailability. To avoid data unavailability, we adapted two live streaming features: (1) streaming data while switching the video quality, and (2) time variability of the number of requests. The second feature enables a fallback mechanism for the cache system by prioritizing cache eviction and terminating the transfer of cache-missed requests. This paper discusses the simulation results of the proposed mechanism, which adopts a request model appropriate for (a) avoiding peak traffic and (b) maintaining continuity of service.

Pain is an essential physiological phenomenon of human beings. Accurate assessment of pain is important to develop proper treatment. Although self-report method is the gold standard in pain assessment, it is not applicable to individuals with communicative impairment. Non-verbal pain indicators such as pain related facial expressions and changes in physiological parameters could provide valuable insights for pain assessment. In this paper, we propose a multimodal-based Stream Integrated Neural Network with Different Frame Rates (SINN) that combines facial expression and biomedical signals for automatic pain assessment. The main contributions of this research are threefold. (1) There are four-stream inputs of the SINN for facial expression feature extraction. The variant facial features are integrated with biomedical features, and the joint features are utilized for pain assessment. (2) The dynamic facial features are learned in both implicit and explicit manners to better represent the facial changes that occur during pain experience. (3) Multiple modalities are utilized to identify various pain states, including facial expression and biomedical signals. The experiments are conducted on publicly available pain datasets, and the performance is compared with several deep learning models. The experimental results illustrate the superiority of the proposed model, and it achieves the highest accuracy of 68.2%, which is up to 5% higher than the basic deep learning models on pain assessment with binary classification.

Herein, a novel self-oscillating active integrated array antenna (AIAA) is proposed for beam switching X-band applications. The proposed AIAA comprises four linearly polarized microstrip antenna elements, a Gunn oscillator, two planar magic-Ts, and two single-pole single-throw (SPST) switches. The in/anti-phase signal combination approach employing planar magic-Ts is adopted to attain bidirectional radiation patterns in the φ =90° plane with a simple structure. The proposed antenna can switch its beam using the SPST switches. The antenna is analyzed through simulations, and a prototype of the antenna is fabricated and tested to validate the concept. The proposed concept is found to be feasible; the prototype has an effective isotropic radiated power of +15.98dBm, radiated power level of +4.28dBm, and cross-polarization suppression of better than 15dB. The measured radiation patterns are in good agreement with the simulation results.

In this paper, we explore the security against integral attacks on well-known stream ciphers SNOW 3G and KCipher-2. SNOW 3G is the core of the 3GPP confidentiality and integrity algorithms UEA2 and UIA2, and KCipher-2 is a standard algorithm of ISO/IEC 18033-4 and CRYPTREC. Specifically, we investigate the propagation of the division property inside SNOW 3G and KCipher-2 by the Mixed-Integer Linear Programming to efficiently find an integral distinguisher. As a result, we present a 7-round integral distinguisher with 23 chosen IVs for KCipher-2. As far as we know, this is the first attack on a reduced variant of KCipher-2 by the third party. In addition, we present a 13-round integral distinguisher with 27 chosen IVs for SNOW 3G, whose time/data complexity is half of the previous best attack by Biryukov et al.

In this paper, we propose a method to enhance the download efficiency of BitTorrent protocol with the notion of structures in the set of pieces generated from a shared file and the swarm of peers downloading the same shared file. More specifically, as for the set of pieces, we introduce the notion of super-pieces called clusters, which is aimed to enlarge the granularity of the management of request-and-reply of pieces, and as for the swarm of peers, we organize a clique consisting of several peers with similar upload capacity, to improve the smoothness of the flow of pieces associated with a cluster. As is shown in the simulation results, the proposed extensions significantly reduce the download time of the first 75% of the downloaders, and thereby improve the performance of P2P-assisted video streaming such as Akamai NetSession and BitTorrent DNA.

This paper describes the development of superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixers for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) from the device point of view. During the construction phase of ALMA, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) successfully fabricated SIS mixers to meet the stringent ALMA noise temperature requirements of less than 230 K (5 times the quantum noise) for Band 10 (787-950 GHz) in collaboration with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology. Band 10 covers the highest frequency band of ALMA and is recognized as the most difficult band in terms of superconducting technology. After the construction, the NAOJ began development studies for ALMA enhancement such as wideband and multibeam SIS mixers according to top-level science requirements, which are also presented.

This paper proposes a physical-layer cell identity (PCID) detection method that uses joint estimation of the frequency offset and secondary synchronization signal (SSS) sequence for the 5G new radio (NR) initial access with beamforming transmission at a base station. Computer simulation results show that using the PCID detection method with the proposed joint estimation yields an almost identical PCID detection probability as the primary synchronization signal (PSS) detection probability at an average received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of higher than approximately -5dB suggesting that the residual frequency offset is compensated to a sufficiently low level for the SSS sequence estimation. It is also shown that the PCID detection method achieves a high PCID detection probability of greater than 90% and 50% at the carrier frequency of 30 and 50GHz, respectively, at the average received SNR of 0dB for the frequency stability of a user equipment oscillator of 3ppm.

Recently, information centric network (ICN) has attracted attention because cached content delivery from router's cache storage improves quality of service (QoS) by reducing redundant traffic. Then, adaptive video streaming is applied to ICN to improve client's quality of experience (QoE). However, in the previous approaches for the cache control, the router implicitly caches the content requested by a user for the other users who may request the same content subsequently. As a result, these approaches are not able to use the cache effectively to improve client's QoE because the cached contents are not always requested by the other users. In addition, since the previous cache control does not consider network congestion state, the adaptive bitrate (ABR) algorithm works incorrectly and causes congestion, and then QoE degrades due to unnecessary congestion. In this paper, we propose an explicit cache placement notification for congestion-aware adaptive video streaming over ICN (CASwECPN) to mitigate congestion. CASwECPN encourages explicit feedback according to the congestion detection in the router on the communication path. While congestion is detected, the router caches the requested content to its cache storage and explicitly notifies the client that the requested content is cached (explicit cache placement and notification) to mitigate congestion quickly. Then the client retrieve the explicitly cached content in the router detecting congestion according to the general procedures of ICN. The simulation experiments show that CASwECPN improves both QoS and client's QoE in adaptive video streaming that adjusts the bitrate adaptively every video segment download. As a result, CASwECPN effectively uses router's cache storage as compared to the conventional cache control policies.

In March 2020, the 5th generation mobile communication system (5G) was launched in Japan. Frequency bands of 3.7GHz, 4.5GHz and 28GHz were allocated for 5G services, and the 5G use cases fall into three broad categories: Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC). The use cases and services that take advantage of the characteristics of each category are expected to be put to practical use, and experiments of practical use are underway. This paper introduces and demonstrates a touchless gate that can identify, authenticate and allow passage through the gate by using these features and 5G beam tracking to estimate location by taking advantage of the low latency of 5G and the straightness of the 28GHz band radio wave and its resistance to spreading. Since position estimation error due to reflected waves and other factors has been a problem, we implement an algorithm that tracks the beam and estimates the user's line of movement, and by using an infrared sensor, we made it possible to identify the gate through which the user passes with high probability. We confirmed that the 5G touchless gate is feasible for gate passage. In addition, we demonstrate that a new service based on high-speed high-capacity communication is possible at gate passage by taking advantage of the wide bandwidth of the 28GHz band. Furthermore, as a use case study of the 5G touchless gate, we conducted a joint experiment with an airline company.

In order to realize the higher bit rates compared for the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication system, massive MIMO technologies in higher frequency bands with wider bandwidth are being investigated for 5G evolution and 6G. One of practical method to realize massive MIMO in the high frequency bands is hybrid beamforming (BF). With this approach, user selection is an important function because its performance is highly affected by inter-user interference. However, the computational complexity of user selection in multi-user massive MIMO is high because MIMO channel matrix size excessive. Furthermore, satisfying user fairness by proportional fairness (PF) criteria leads to further increase of the complexity because re-calculation of precoding and postcoding matrices is required for each combination of selected users. To realize a fair and low-complexity user selection algorithm for multi-user massive MIMO employing hybrid BF, this paper proposes a two-step user selection algorithm that combines PF based user selection and chordal distance user selection. Computer simulations show that the proposed two-step user selection algorithm with higher user fairness and lower computational complexity can achieve higher system performance than the conventional user selection algorithms.

In this paper, we focus on developing efficient multi-configuration selection mechanisms by exploiting the spatial degrees of freedom (DoF), and leveraging the simple design benefits of spatial modulation (SM). Notably, the SM technique, as well as its variants, faces the following critical challenges: (i) the performance degradation and difficulty in improving the system performance for higher-level QAM constellations, and (ii) the vast complexity cost in precoder designs particularly for the increasing system dimension and amplitude-phase modulation (APM) constellation dimension. Given this situation, we first investigate two independent modulation domains, i.e., the original signal- and spatial-constellations. By exploiting the analog shift weighting and the virtual spatial signature technologies, we introduce the signature spatial modulation (SSM) concept, which is capable of guaranteing superior trade-offs among spectral- and cost-efficiencies, and system bit error rate (BER) performance. Besides, we develop an analog beamforming for SSM by solving the introduced unconstrained Lagrange dual function minimization problem. Numerical results manifest the performance gain brought by our developed analog beamforming for SSM.

Since the quality of video streaming services is degraded due to the encoding, network congestion, and lack of a playout buffer, the normality of services needs to be monitored by gathering the quality measured at the end clients. When measuring quality at the end clients, the computational power should be sufficiently low, the bitstream information cannot be accessed for the quality estimation due to the encryption, and reference video cannot be used at the end clients. Therefore, metadata-based models have been developed and standardized that take metadata such as the resolution, framerate, and bitrate, and stalling information as input and calculate the quality. However, calculated quality for linear TV and video on demand (VoD) services cannot be compared because metadata-based models cannot calculate the impacts of codec strategies (e.g., H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, and AV1) and configurations (e.g., 1-pass encoding for linear TV or 2-pass encoding for VoD) on the quality. To take into account the impact of codec strategies and configurations, coefficients of metadata-based model need to be optimized per codec strategy and configuration using subjective quality. However, extensive subjective assessment tests are difficult to frequently conduct because they are expensive and time consuming and need to be conducted by video quality experts. Therefore, to monitor the quality of several types of video streaming services (e.g., linear TV and VoD) and to compare these qualities, a derivation procedure is proposed for obtaining coefficients of metadata-based models using a full-reference model. To validate the procedure, extensive subjective assessment tests were conducted. Finally, it is shown that three metadata-based models (i.e., the P.1203.1 mode 0 model, extended P.1203.1 mode 0 model, and model proposed by Yamagishi et al.) based on the proposed procedure using the video multimethod assessment fusion (VMAF) algorithm estimate quality accurately in terms of root mean squared error.
