In this paper, we present a new electro-optic (EO) probing system based on heterodyne detection. The use of a recirculating frequency shifter allows to expand the bandwidth of the system far beyond what is attainable with a conventional heterodyne EO set-up. The performance for the frequencies up to 50GHz is analysed to forecast the viability of the system up to the THz range.

In the case of a disaster such as an earthquake or a tsunami, the city, town, and village administration usually issues an evacuation advisory and other information through the Outdoor Public Address Speakers for the disaster reduction broadcasting system covering its area of jurisdiction. However, in areas those have previous experience of a disaster, people frequently voice the lack of audibility of the disaster reduction broadcast. In this research, we conducted a questionnaire survey on the residents in the central area of Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, who are the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster, on the audible quality of outdoor public address (PA) speakers of the disaster reduction broadcasting system so as to understand the current state of such broadcasts and to propose ideal methods of sending and receiving information at the time of a future disaster.

5G is the next step in the evolution of mobile communication and a key component of the future networked society. It will include the evolution of LTE as well as new non-backwards-compatible technology. With capabilities such as massive system capacity, higher data rates, very low latency and ultra-high reliability, 5G will provide significantly enhanced mobile-broadband experience but also support a wide range of new wireless applications and use cases. Key technology components include operation at higher frequency bands and flexible spectrum usage, advanced multi-antenna/multi-site transmission, lean transmission, access/backhaul integration, and possibility for direct device-to-device communication.
This paper investigates active period selection for cluster-based WSNs employing traffic adaptive IEEE 802.15.4 beacon enabled medium access control (MAC) under spatial non-uniform traffic and cluster mobility environments, and proposes a simple autonomous distributed superframe duration (SD) selection scheme to enhance network performance under such environments. The proposed scheme autonomously selects an active SD at each cluster head (CH) by using beacon reception power monitoring (conducted in distributed control manner) and also introduces a beacon status notice from sensor nodes (SNs) to their parent CHs in order to prevent unnecessary SD selection at CHs. Moreover, SD reuse mechanism and joint operation with previously proposed distributed backoff mechanism are proposed for the proposed SD selection scheme to further enhance the network performance. The results of computer simulation show that the proposed scheme can improve both the transmission and power efficiency performance of cluster-based WSNs under spatial non-uniform traffic and cluster mobility environments.
Irreversible k-conversion set is introduced in connection with the mathematical modeling of the spread of diseases or opinions. We show that the problem to find a minimum irreversible 2-conversion set can be solved in O(n2log 6n) time for graphs with maximum degree at most 3 (subcubic graphs) by reducing it to the graphic matroid parity problem, where n is the number of vertices in a graph. This affirmatively settles an open question posed by Kyncl et al. (2014).

Directional communications have been considered as a feasible alternative to improve spatial division and throughput in mobile communication environments. In general, directional MAC protocols proposed in the literature rely on channel reservation based on control frames, such as RTS/CTS. Notwithstanding, channel reservation based on control frames increases latency and has an impact on the network throughput. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a channel reservation technique based on pulse/tone signals. The proposed scheme, termed directional pulse/tone channel reservation (DPTCR), allows for efficient channel reservation without resorting to control frames such as RTS and CTS. Theoretical and empirical results show that the proposed scheme has a low probability of failure while providing significant throughput gains. The results show that DPTCR is able to provide throughput improvement up to 158% higher as compared to traditional channel reservation employing RTS/CTS frames.
This paper proposes a Poisson denoising method with a union of directional lapped orthogonal transforms (DirLOTs). DirLOTs are 2-D non-separable lapped orthogonal transforms with directional characteristics under the fixed-critically-subsampling, overlapping, orthonormal, symmetric, real-valued and compact-support property. In this work, DirLOTs are used to generate symmetric orthogonal discrete wavelet transforms and then a redundant dictionary as a union of unitary transforms. The multiple directional property is suitable for representing natural images which contain diagonal textures and edges. Multiple DirLOTs can overcome a disadvantage of separable wavelets in representing diagonal components. In addition to this feature, multiple DirLOTs make transform-based denoising performance better through the redundant representation. Experimental results show that the combination of the variance stabilizing transformation (VST), Stein's unbiased risk estimator-linear expansion of threshold (SURE-LET) approach and multiple DirLOTs is able to significantly improve the denoising performance.
In this paper, a design method for the infinite impulse response (IIR) filters using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) is developed. It is well-known that the updating in the PSO tends to stagnate around local minimums due to a strong search directivity. Recently, the asynchronous digenetic PSO with nonlinear dissipative term (N-AD-PSO) has been proposed as a purpose for a diverse search. Therefore, it can be expected that the stagnation can be avoided by the N-AD-PSO. However, there is no report that the N-AD-PSO has been applied to any realistic problems. In this paper, the N-AD-PSO is applied for the IIR filter design. Several examples are shown to clarify the effectiveness and the drawback of the proposed method.

In this paper, we propose a modeling approach for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that is based on non-volatile two-dimensional cellular automata (CA) and analyze the space-time dynamics of a WSN based on the proposed model. We introduce the fourth circuit element with memory function — memristor into the cells of CA to model a non-volatile CA and employ the non-volatile CA in modeling a WSN. A state transition method is designed to implement the synchronous updates of the states between the central sensor nodes and its neighbors which might behave asynchronously in sending messages to the central one. Therefore, the energy consumption in sensor nodes can be reduced by lessening the amount of exchanged information. Simulations demonstrate that the energy consumption of a WSN can be reduced greatly based on the proposed model and the lifetime of the whole network can be increased.

In this letter, high quality speech reconstruction approaches from Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) are presented. Taking into account of the nonnegative and sparse properties of the speech power spectrum, an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) based nonnegative l2 norm (NL2) and weighted nonnegative l2 norm (NWL2) minimization approach is proposed to cope with the under-determined nature of the reconstruction problem. The phase spectrum is recovered by the well-known LSE-ISTFTM algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that the NL2 and NWL2 approach substantially achieves better quality for reconstructed speech than the conventional l2 norm minimization approach, it sounds very close to the original speech when using the high-resolution MFCC, the PESQ score reaches 4.0.

Magnetic resonant coupling between two coils allows effective wireless transfer of power over distances in the range of tens of centimeters to a few meters. The strong resonant magnetic field also extends to the immediate surroundings of the power transfer system. When a user or bystander is exposed to this magnetic field, electric fields are induced in the body. For the purposes of human and product safety, it is necessary to evaluate whether these fields satisfy the human exposure limits specified in international guidelines and standards. This work investigates the effectiveness of the quasistatic approximation for computational modeling human exposure to the magnetic fields of wireless power transfer systems. It is shown that, when valid, this approximation can greatly reduce the computational requirements of the assessment of human exposure. Using the quasistatic modeling approach, we present an example of the assessment of human exposure to the non-uniform magnetic field of a realistic WPT system for wireless charging of an electric vehicle battery, and propose a coupling factor for practical determination of compliance with the international exposure standards.

Current mobile communication terminals are equipped with multiple RF circuits that cover all frequency bands assigned for the communication. In order to make efficient use of frequency spectrum and to reduce circuits in a terminal, a low-loss reconfigurable RF filter is necessary to flexibly change RF frequencies. In this paper, a new reconfigurable bandpass filter (BPF) having eight-frequency (three-bit) selection capability is proposed. It employs branch-line switched type variable resonators that provide low insertion loss. One of the design issues is how to control pass bandwidths among selectable frequencies. In order to analyze the bandwidth variation of the reconfigurable BPF, we calculate the changes of external Q and coupling coefficients. It is shown that the inductive coupling design can achieve less variation of bandwidth for the reconfigurable BPF, compared with commonly used capacitive coupling design. A prototype BPF on a printed circuit board with high dielectric constant substrate has been fabricated and evaluated in 2 GHz bands. It presents performance very close to the design results with respect to insertion loss, center frequency and passband bandwidth. Low insertion loss of less than 1 dB is achieved among the eight frequencies.

This paper presents a new way to classify different radiation sources by the parameter of directivity, which is a characteristic parameter of electromagnetic radiation sources. The parameter can be determined from measurements of the electric field intensity radiating in all directions in space. We develop three basic antenna models, which are for 3GHz operation, and set 125,000 groups of cube receiving arrays along the main lobe of their radiation patterns to receive the data of far field electric intensity in groups. Then the Back Propagation (BP) neural network and the Support Vector Machine (SVM) method are adopted to analyze training data set, and build and test the classification model. Owing to the powerful nonlinear simulation ability, the SVM method offers higher classification accuracy than the BP neural network in noise environment. At last, the classification model is comprehensively evaluated in three aspects, which are capability of noise immunity, F1 measure and the normalization method.

RF under sampling is more suitable for Satellite receiver systems in comparison to terrestrial systems. In conventional RF under sampling the minimum sampling frequency (fs) should be atleast twice the system bandwidth; therefore for a system with a wide bandwidth, a relatively high fs is necessary. In this paper we propose a direct RF under sampling reception method that halves fs. The proposed f's is achieved by folding in band noise in half. A method of adapting f's for the reception of signals in different channels is also proposed; this ensures that the SNR is not degraded for any channel. To evaluate the proposed technique's performance and compare it to the conventional case a 3 channel, 1 GHz band test receiver and it's key device (i.e. S/H circuit) are developed. Using SNR and EVM as performance indexes, the performance of the proposed technique has been evaluated and compared to that of the conventional technique. The evaluation results show that the proposed technique can achieve the same performance as conventional RF under sampling for all 3 channels, using only half of the sampling frequency of the conventional technique.
Multiple-way (N-way) asynchronous arbitration is an important issue in asynchronous system design. In this paper, novel implementation methods of N-way asynchronous arbiters are presented. We first present N-way rectangle mesh arbiters using 2-way mutual exclusion elements. Then, N-way token-ring arbiters based on the non-return-to-zero signaling is also presented. The former can issue grant signals with the same percentage for all the arriving request signals while the latency is proportional to the number of inputs. The latter can achieve low latency and low energy arbitration for a heavy workload environment and a large number of inputs. In this paper, we compare their performances using the 28nm FD-SOI process technologies qualitatively and quantitatively.

Novel multi-band mixers that can receive multiple band signals concurrently are proposed and evaluated. The mixers achieve independent gain control through novel relative power control method of the multiple local oscillator (LO) signals. Linear control is also achieved through multiple LO signal input with total LO power control. Theoretical analysis shows that odd-order nonlinearity components of the multiple LO signals support linear conversion gain control. Dual- and triple-band tests are conducted using typical three MOSFET mixers fabricated by a 0.25 µm SiGe BiCMOS process. Measurements confirm over 40 dB independent control of conversion gain, linear control achieved through LO input power control. The proposed mixers have high input linearity with a 5 dBm output third intercept point. A method is also proposed to reduce interference caused by mixing between multiple LO signals.

With the development and diverse use of wireless radio terminals, it is necessary to estimate the specific absorption rate (SAR) of the human body from such devices under various exposure situations. In particular, tablet computers may be used for a long time while placed near the abdomen. There has been insufficient evaluation of the SAR for the human body from tablet computers. Therefore, we investigated the SAR of various configurations of a commercial tablet computer using a numerical model with the anatomical structures of Japanese males and females, respectively. We find that the 10-g-averaged SAR of the tablet computer is strongly altered by the tablet's orientation, i.e., from -7.3dB to -22.6dB. When the tablet computer is moved parallel to the height direction, the relative standard deviations of the 10-g averaged SAR for the male and female models are within 40%. In addition, those for the different tilts of the computer are within 20%. The fluctuations of the 10-g-averaged SAR for the seated human models are within ±1.5dB in all cases.

This work addresses two key topics in the field of energy harvesting and wireless power transfer. The first is the optimum signal design for improved RF-DC conversion efficiency in rectifier circuits by using time varying envelope signals. The second is the design of rectifiers that present reduced sensitivity to input power and output load variations by introducing resistance compression network (RCN) structures.

In order to efficiently drive a low-power DC motor using microwave power transfer (MPT), a compact power-receiving device is developed, which consists of a rectenna array and an improved DC-DC converter with constant input resistance characteristics. Since the conversion efficiency of the rectenna is strongly affected by the output load, it is difficult to efficiently drive a dynamic load resistance device such as DC motor. Using both continuous-wave (CW) and pulsed-wave MPT, experiments are carried out on driving the DC motor whose load resistance is varying from 36 to 140 Ω. In the CW case, the measured overall efficiency of the power-receiving device is constant over 50% for the power density of 0.25 to 2.08 mW/cm2. In particular, the overall efficiency is 62%, 70.8% for the power density of 0.25, 0.98 mW/cm2 where the received power of the single antenna is 13, 50 mW, respectively. In the pulsed-wave case, the measured overall efficiency is over 44% for a duty ratio of 0.2 to 1 for the power density of 0.98 mW/cm2.

This paper proposes reflection and transmission control panels using artificially designed materials. As the artificially designed material, finite- and infinite-length metal wire array sheets are used here. Laminated structures consisting of the metal wire array sheets and dielectric material are proposed. Reflection and transmission characteristics of these structures can be controlled by changing the metal wire parameters such as wire length, spacing gaps between the wires, and the dielectric material's thickness and relative permittivity. The reflection and transmission characteristics of the laminated structures are evaluated by measurements in free space and by transmission line theory.
