From edge devices to cloud servers, providing optimized hardware acceleration for specific applications has become a key approach to improve the efficiency of computer systems. Traditionally, many systems employ commercial field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to implement dedicated hardware accelerator as the CPU's co-processor. However, commercial FPGAs are designed in generic architectures and are provided in the form of discrete chips, which makes it difficult to meet increasingly diversified market needs, such as balancing reconfigurable hardware resources for a specific application, or to be integrated into a customer's system-on-a-chip (SoC) in the form of embedded FPGA (eFPGA). In this paper, we propose an eFPGA generation suite with customizable architecture and integrated development environment (IDE), which covers the entire eFPGA design generation, testing, and utilization stages. For the eFPGA design generation, our intellectual property (IP) generation flow can explore the optimal logic cell, routing, and array structures for given target applications. For the testability, we employ a previously proposed shipping test method that is 100% accurate at detecting all stuck-at faults in the entire FPGA-IP. In addition, we propose a user-friendly and customizable Web-based IDE framework for the generated eFPGA based on the NODE-RED development framework. In the case study, we show an eFPGA architecture exploration example for a differential privacy encryption application using the proposed suite. Then we show the implementation and evaluation of the eFPGA prototype with a 55nm test element group chip design.

Crowdsensing-based spectrum detection (CSD) is promising to enable full-coverage radio resource availability for the increasingly connected machines in the Internet of Things (IoT) networks. The current CSD scheme consumes a lot of energy and network resources for local sensing, processing, and distributed data reporting for each crowdsensing device. Furthermore, when the amount of reported data is large, the data fusion implemented at the requestor can easily cause high latency. For improving efficiencies in both energy and network resources, this paper proposes a green CSD (GCSD) paradigm. The ambient backscatter (AmB) is used to enable a battery-free mode of operation in which the received spectrum data is reported directly through backscattering without local processing. The energy for backscattering can be provided by ambient radio frequency (RF) sources. Then, relying on air computation (AirComp), the data fusion can be implemented during the backscattering process and over the air by utilizing the summation property of wireless channel. This paper illustrates the model and the implementation process of the GCSD paradigm. Closed-form expressions of detection metrics are derived for the proposed GCSD. Simulation results verify the correctness of the theoretical derivation and demonstrate the green properties of the GCSD paradigm.

In this study, the bending losses of chalcogenide glass channel optical waveguides consisting of an As2Se3 core and an As2S3 lower cladding layer were numerically evaluated across the astronomical N-band, which is the mid-infrared spectral range between the 8 µm and 12 µm wavelengths. The results reveal the design rules for bent waveguides in mid-infrared astrophotonic devices.

Contemporary development projects benefit from code review as it improves the quality of a project. Large ecosystems of inter-dependent projects like OpenStack generate a large number of reviews, which poses new challenges for collaboration (improving patches, fixing defects). Review tools allow developers to link between patches, to indicate patch dependency, competing solutions, or provide broader context. We hypothesize that such patch linkage may also simulate cross-collaboration. With a case study of OpenStack, we take a first step to explore collaborations that occur after a patch linkage was posted between two patches (i.e., cross-patch collaboration). Our empirical results show that although patch linkage that requests collaboration is relatively less prevalent, the probability of collaboration is relatively higher. Interestingly, the results also show that collaborative contributions via patch linkage are non-trivial, i.e, contributions can affect the review outcome (such as voting) or even improve the patch (i.e., revising). This work opens up future directions to understand barriers and opportunities related to this new kind of collaboration, that assists with code review and development tasks in large ecosystems.

In this paper, we proposed the phase disturbing device using randomly-fluctuated liquid crystal (LC) alignment to reduce the speckle noise generated in holographic displays. Some parameters corresponding to the alignment fluctuation of thick LC layer were quantitatively evaluated, and we clarified the effect of the LC alignment fluctuation with the parameters on speckle noise reduction.

In this paper, we propose a multi-domain learning model for action recognition. The proposed method inserts domain-specific adapters between layers of domain-independent layers of a backbone network. Unlike a multi-head network that switches classification heads only, our model switches not only the heads, but also the adapters for facilitating to learn feature representations universal to multiple domains. Unlike prior works, the proposed method is model-agnostic and doesn't assume model structures unlike prior works. Experimental results on three popular action recognition datasets (HMDB51, UCF101, and Kinetics-400) demonstrate that the proposed method is more effective than a multi-head architecture and more efficient than separately training models for each domain.

This paper focuses on verification for reactive system specifications. A reactive system is an open system that continuously interacts with an uncontrollable external environment, and it must often be highly safe and reliable. However, realizability checking for a given specification is very costly, so we need effective methods to detect and analyze defects in unrealizable specifications to refine them efficiently. We introduce a systematic characterization on necessary conditions of realizability. This characterization is based on quantifications for inputs and outputs in early and late behaviors and reveals four essential aspects of realizability: exhaustivity, strategizability, preservability and stability. Additionally, the characterization derives new necessary conditions, which enable us to classify unrealizable specifications systematically and hierarchically.

S-parameters of InGaAs/InAlAs triple-barrier resonant tunneling diodes (TBRTDs) were measured up to 67 GHz with various mesa areas and various bias voltages. Admittance data of bare TBRTDs are deembedded and evaluated by getting rid of parasitic components with help of electromagnetic simulations for particular fabricated device structures. Admittance spectroscopy up to 67 GHz is applied for bare TBRTDs for the first time and a Kramers-Kronig relation with Lorentzian function is found to be a consistent model for the admittance especially in cases of low bias conditions. Relaxation time included in the Lorentzian function are tentatively evaluated as the order of several pico second.

We proposed a new method for evaluating the deterioration of messenger wires by using terahertz waves. We use terahertz time-domain spectroscopy to measure several twisted wire samples with different levels of deterioration. We find that each twisted wire sample had a different distribution of reflection intensity which was due to the wires' twist structure. We show that it is possible to assess the degradation from the straight lines present in the reflection intensity distribution image. Furthermore, it was confirmed that our method can be applied to wire covered with resin.

This paper investigates the joint problem of user association and spectrum allocation in satellite-terrestrial integrated networks (STINs), where a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite access network cooperating with terrestrial networks constitutes a heterogeneous network, which is beneficial in terms of both providing seamless coverage as well as improving the backhaul capacity for the dense network scenario. However, the orbital movement of satellites results in the dynamic change of accessible satellites and the backhaul capacities. Moreover, spectrum sharing may be faced with severe co-channel interferences (CCIs) caused by overlapping coverage of multiple access points (APs). This paper aims to maximize the total sum rate considering the influences of the dynamic feature of STIN, backhaul capacity limitation and interference management. The optimization problem is then decomposed into two subproblems: resource allocation for terrestrial communications and satellite communications, which are both solved by matching algorithms. Finally, simulation results show the effectiveness of our proposed scheme in terms of STIN's sum rate and spectrum efficiency.

The altered fingerprints help criminals escape from police and cause great harm to the society. In this letter, an altered fingerprint detection method is proposed. The method is constructed by two deep convolutional neural networks to train the time-domain and frequency-domain features. A spectral attention module is added to connect two networks. After the extraction network, a feature fusion module is then used to exploit relationship of two network features. We make ablation experiments and add the module proposed in some popular architectures. Results show the proposed method can improve the performance of altered fingerprint detection compared with the recent neural networks.

The differential uniformity, the boomerang uniformity, and the extended Walsh spectrum etc are important parameters to evaluate the security of S (substitution)-box. In this paper, we introduce efficient formulas to compute these cryptographic parameters of permutation polynomials of the form xrh(x(2n-1)/d) over a finite field of q=2n elements, where r is a positive integer and d is a positive divisor of 2n-1. The computational cost of those formulas is proportional to d. We investigate differentially 4-uniform permutation polynomials of the form xrh(x(2n-1)/3) and compute the boomerang spectrum and the extended Walsh spectrum of them using the suggested formulas when 6≤n≤12 is even, where d=3 is the smallest nontrivial d for even n. We also investigate the differential uniformity of some permutation polynomials introduced in some recent papers for the case d=2n/2+1.

To solve the problem of metamerism in the color reproduction process, various spectral reflectance reconstruction methods combined with neural network have been proposed in recent years. However, these methods are generally sensitive to initial values and can easily converge to local optimal solutions, especially on small data sets. In this paper, we propose a spectral reflectance reconstruction algorithm based on the Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) and an improved Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA). In this algorithm, to solve the problem that BPNN is sensitive to initial values, we propose to use SSA to initialize BPNN, and we use the sine chaotic mapping to further improve the stability of the algorithm. In the experiment, we tested the proposed algorithm on the X-Rite ColorChecker Classic Mini Chart which contains 24 colors, the results show that the proposed algorithm has significantly better performance compared to other algorithms and moreover it can meet the needs of spectral reflectance reconstruction on small data sets. Code is avaible at https://github.com/LuraZhang/spectral-reflectance-reconsctuction.

As known to us all, L-shaped co-prime array (LCA) is a recently introduced two-dimensional (2-D) sparse array structure, which is extended from linear co-prime array (CA). Such sparse array geometry can be used for 2-D parameters estimation with higher degrees-of-freedom (DOF). However, in the scenario where several narrowband transmissions spread over a wide spectrum, existing technique based on LCA with Nyquist sampling may encounter a bottleneck for both analog and digital processing. To alleviate the burden of high-rate Nyquist sampling, a method of joint wideband spectrum and direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation with compressed sampling based on LCA, which is recognized as LCA-based modulated wideband converter (MWC), is presented in this work. First, the received signal along each antenna is mixed to basebands, low-pass filtered and down-sampled to get the compressed sampling data. Then by constructing the virtual received data of 2-D difference coarray, we estimate the wideband spectrum and DOA jointly using two recovery methods where the first is a joint ESPRIT method and the other is a joint CS method. Numerical simulations illustrate the validity of the proposed LCA based MWC system and show the superiority.

In this study, we develop a numerical method for determining transient energy deposition in biological bodies exposed to electromagnetic (EM) pulses. We use a newly developed frequency-dependent finite-difference time-domain (FD2TD) method, which is combined with the fast inverse Laplace transform (FILT) and Prony method. The FILT and Prony method are utilized to transform the Cole-Cole model of biological media into a sum of multiple Debye relaxation terms. Parameters of Debye terms are then extracted by comparison with the time-domain impulse responses. The extracted parameters are used in an FDTD formulation, which is derived using the auxiliary differential equation method, and transient energy deposition into a biological medium is calculated by the equivalent circuit method. The validity of our proposed method is demonstrated by comparing numerical results and those derived from an analytical method. Finally, transient energy deposition into human heads of TARO and HANAKO models is then calculated using the proposed method and, physical insights into pulse exposures of the human heads are provided.

Because processes run concurrently in multitask systems, the size of the state space grows exponentially. Therefore, it is not straightforward to formally verify that such systems enjoy desired properties. Real-time constrains make the formal verification more challenging. In this paper, we propose the following to address the challenge: (1) a way to model multitask real-time systems as observational transition systems (OTSs), a kind of state transition systems, (2) a way to describe their specifications in CafeOBJ, an algebraic specification language, and (3) a way to verify that such systems enjoy desired properties based on such formal specifications by writing proof scores, proof plans, in CafeOBJ. As a case study, we model Fischer's protocol, a well-known real-time mutual exclusion protocol, as an OTS, describe its specification in CafeOBJ, and verify that the protocol enjoys the mutual exclusion property when an arbitrary number of processes participates in the protocol*.

To reduce the complexity of direct radio frequency (RF) undersampling real-time spectrum monitoring in wireless Internet of Things (IoT) bands (920MHz, 2.4GHz, and 5 GHz bands), a design method of sampling frequencies is proposed in this paper. The Direct RF Undersampling receiver architecture enables the use of ADC with sampling clock lower frequency than receiving RF signal, but it needs RF signal identification signal processing from folded spectrums with multiple sampling clock frequencies. The proposed design method allows fewer sampling frequencies to be used than the conventional design method for continuous frequency range (D.C. to 5GHz-band). The proposed method reduced 2 sampling frequencies in wireless IoT bands case compared with the continuous range. The design result using the proposed method is verified by measurement.
The energy efficiency of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) enabled internet of things (IoT) networks is studied in this letter. The energy efficiency is mathematically expressed, respectively, as the number of reflecting elements and the spectral efficiency of the network and is shown to scale in the logarithm of the reflecting elements number in the high regime of transmit power from source node. Furthermore, it is revealed that the energy efficiency scales linearly over the spectral efficiency in the high regime of transmit power, in contrast to conventional studies on energy and spectral efficiency trade-offs in the non-IRS wireless IoT networks. Numerical simulations are carried out to verify the derived results for the IRS enabled IoT networks.

Various electromagnetic (EM) wave applications have become commonplace, and humans are frequently exposed to EM waves. Therefore, the effect of EM waves on the human body should be evaluated. In this study, we focused on the specific absorption rate (SAR) due to the EM waves emitted from smartphones, developed high-resolution numerical smartphone models, and studied the SAR variation by changing the position and tilt angle (the angle between the display of the smartphone model and horizontal plane) of the smartphone models vis-à-vis the human abdomen, assuming the use of the smartphone at various tilt angles in front of the abdomen. The calculations showed that the surface shape of the human model influenced the SAR variation.

Image resolution under the effect of color speckle was successfully measured for a raster-scan mobile projector, using the modified contrast modulation method. This method was based on the eye-diagram analysis for distinguishing the binary image signals, black-and-white line pairs. The image resolution and the related metrics, illuminance, chromaticity, and speckle contrast were measured at the nine regions on the full-frame area projected on a standard diffusive reflectance screen. The nonuniformity data over the nine regions were discussed and analyzed.
