  • A Multiple Antenna Spectrum Sensing Scheme Based on Space and Time Diversity in Cognitive Radios

    Multiple antenna is introduced into spectrum sensing in cognitive radios recently. However, conventional multiple antenna spectrum sensing schemes exploited only space diversity. In this paper, we propose a new multiple antenna sensing scheme based on space and time diversity (MASS-BSTD). First, the primary user signal to be sensed is over-sampled at each antenna, and signal samples collected at the same time instant from different antennas are stacked into a column vector. Second, each column vector is utilized to estimate space correlation matrix that exploits space diversity, and two consecutive column vectors are utilized to estimate time correlation matrix that exploits time diversity. Third, the estimated space correlation matrix and time correlation matrix are combined and analyzed using eigenvalue decomposition to reduce information redundancy of signals from multiple antennas. Lastly, the derived eigenvalues are utilized to construct the test statistic and sense the presence of the primary user signal. Since the proposed MASS-BSTD exploits both space diversity and time diversity, it achieves performance gain over the counterparts that only exploit space diversity. Furthermore, the proposed MASS-BSTD requires no prior information on the primary user, the channel between primary user transmitter and secondary user receiver, and is robust to noise uncertainty. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed MASS-BSTD can sense the presence of primary user signal reliably.

  • Study on Impurity Distribution Dependence of Electron-Dynamics in Vertical MOSFET

    We have studied the transport property of the Vertical MOSFET (V-MOSFET) with an impurity from the viewpoint of quantum electron dynamics. In order to obtain the position dependence of impurity for the electron transmission property through the channel of the V-MOSFET, we solve the time-dependent Shrodinger equation in real space mesh technique We reveal that the impurity in the source edge can assist the electron transmission from the source to drain working as a wave splitter. In addition, we also reveal the effect of an impurity in the surface of pillar is limited because of its dimensionality. Furthermore, we obtained that the electron injection from the source to the channel becomes difficult due to the energy difference between the subbands of the source and the channel. These results enable us to obtain the guiding principle to design the V-MOSFET in the 10 nm pillar. The results enable us to obtain the guiding principle to design the V-MOSFET beyond 20 nm design rule.

    Vehicle routing is an important combinatorial optimization problem. In real transport networks,the travel speed and travel time of roads have large time-variability and randomness. The study of vehicle routing problem in time-dependent network has even more practical value than static network VRP problem. This paper combines the features of time-dependent networks and gives the mathematical models of the time-dependent vehicle routing problem. On this basis, the traditional ant colony optimization algorithm is improved. A new path transfer strategy of ants and new dynamic pheromone update strategy applicable to time-dependent network are proposed. Based on these strategies, the improved ant colony algorithm is given for solving the vehicle routing problem in time-dependent networks. The simulation results show that the algorithm can effectively solve the vehicle routing problem in time-dependent network and has better computational efficiency and convergence speed.

    In this paper, an optimal power control for minimizing bit error rate (BER) subject to a power constraint for space-time block coded MIMO systems with beamforming over Rayleigh fading channels under imperfect channel state information (CSI) is presented. The optimal power control procedure is developed. It is shown that the Lagrange multiplier for the constrained optimization does exist and is unique. To simplify the power control procedure, a closed-form suboptimal power control scheme is drived based on the asymptotic performance analysis of the optimal power control and Taylor's series expansion. The calculation of the suboptimal power control is straightforward with low computational complexity. Moreover, the suboptimal scheme can provide the BER performance close to that of the optimal power control and is lower than that of the existing suboptimal scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed two power control schemes can provide BER lower than that of the equal power allocation and the existing suboptimal scheme under imperfect CSI.

    This paper presents an ultra-wideband amplifier embedded with band-pass filter design. The scattering parameters of a frequency-domain GaAs field effect transistor are converted into z-domain representations by employing the weighted linear least squares method. A least squares scheme is employed to obtain characteristic impedances of transmission line elements that form the amplifier having a flat gain in the passband and good fall-off selectivity in the stopband. Experimental results illustrate the validity of the proposed design method.

    We introduce a 16 × cascaded time difference amplifier (TDA) using a differential logic delay cell with 0.18 µm CMOS process. By employing the differential logic delay cell in the delay chain instead of the CMOS logic delay cell, less than 8% TD gain offset with 150 ps input range is achieved. The input referred standard deviation of the output time difference error is 2.7 ps and the input referred is improved by 17% compared with that of the previous TDA using the CMOS logic delay cell.

    Every time-series has its own linear trend, the directionality of a time-series, and removing the linear trend is crucial to get more intuitive matching results. Supporting the linear detrending in subsequence matching is a challenging problem due to the huge number of all possible subsequences. In this paper we define this problem as the linear detrending subsequence matching and propose its efficient index-based solution. To this end, we first present a notion of LD-windows (LD means linear detrending). Using the LD-windows we then present a lower bounding theorem for the index-based matching solution and show its correctness. We next propose the index building and subsequence matching algorithms. We finally show the superiority of the index-based solution.

  • Energy-Aware Task Scheduling for Real-Time Systems with Discrete Frequencies

    Power-aware scheduling of periodic tasks in real-time systems has been extensively studied to save energy while still meeting the performance requirement. Many previous studies use the probability information of tasks' execution cycles to assist the scheduling. However, most of these approaches adopt heuristic algorithms to cope with realistic CPU models with discrete frequencies and cannot achieve the globally optimal solution. Sometimes they even show worse results than non-stochastic DVS schemes. This paper presents an optimal DVS scheme for frame-based real-time systems under realistic power models in which the processor provides only a limited number of speeds and no assumption is made on power/frequency relation. A suboptimal DVS scheme is also presented in this paper to work out a solution near enough to the optimal one with only polynomial time expense. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm can save at most 40% more energy compared with previous ones.

    In order to realize multi-service in TDS-OFDM system, a novel multiplexing scheme based on space time block code is proposed along with the corresponding demultiplexing method with low complexity. Simulations show the presented scheme can not only achieve full diversity gain, but also effectively improve the system capacity.

    In our previous project, an XML-based authoring tool was provided for teachers to script multimedia teaching material with animated agents, and a stand-alone learning system was designed for students to display the material and interact with animated agents. We also provided evidence that the authoring tool and learning system in computer-assisted learning systems successfully enhances learning performance. The aim of this study is to continue the previous project, to develop a Web-based multimedia learning system that presents materials and an animated agent on a Web browser. The Web-based multimedia learning system can provide an opportunity for students to engage in independent learning or review of school course work. In order to demonstrate the efficiency of this learning system, it was applied to one elementary school. An experimental material, `Road Traffic Safety', was presented in two learning systems: a Web-based PowerPoint learning system and a Web-based multimedia learning system. The experiment was carried out in two classes that had a total of thirty-one 3rd-grade students. The results suggest that using our authoring tool in a Web-based learning system can improve learning, and in particular, enhance learners' problem-solving ability. Students with higher achievement on the post-test showed better comprehension in problem-solving questions. Furthermore, the feedback from the questionnaire surveys show students' learning interest can be fostered when an animated agent is integrated into multimedia teaching materials, and that students prefer to adopt the Web-based multimedia learning system for independent learning after school.

  • Language Recognition Based on Acoustic Diversified Phone Recognizers and Phonotactic Feature Fusion

    One typical phonotactic system for language recognition is parallel phone recognition followed by vector space modeling (PPRVSM). In this system, various phone recognizers are applied in parallel and fused at the score level. Each phone recognizer is trained for a known language, which is assumed to extract complementary information for effective fusion. But this method is limited by the large amount of training samples for which word or phone level transcription is required. Also, score fusion is not the optimal method as fusion at the feature or model level will retain more information than at the score level. This paper presents a new strategy to build and fuse parallel phone recognizers (PPR). This is achieved by training multiple acoustic diversified phone recognizers and fusing at the feature level. The phone recognizers are trained on the same speech data but using different acoustic features and model training techniques. For the acoustic features, Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) and perceptual linear prediction (PLP) are both employed. In addition, a new time-frequency cepstrum (TFC) feature is proposed to extract complementary acoustic information. For the model training, we examine the use of the maximum likelihood and feature minimum phone error methods to train complementary acoustic models. In this study, we fuse phonotactic features of the acoustic diversified phone recognizers using a simple linear fusion method to build the PPRVSM system. A novel logistic regression optimized weighting (LROW) approach is introduced for fusion factor optimization. The experimental results show that fusion at the feature level is more effective than at the score level. And the proposed system is competitive with the traditional PPRVSM. Finally, the two systems are combined for further improvement. The best performing system reported in this paper achieves an equal error rate (EER) of 1.24%, 4.98% and 14.96% on the NIST 2007 LRE 30-second, 10-second and 3-second evaluation databases, respectively, for the closed-set test condition.

  • A Web Script-Based Field Evaluation Method to Assess Subjective Quality of Mobile Services

    Providing mobile services that ensure user satisfaction is one of the most crucial issues for telecommunication carriers and service providers. Traditionally, user satisfaction with the service, i.e., the Quality of Experience (QoE), has been assessed in a laboratory by using elaborate network systems and customized terminals. However, reliable QoE for a target mobile service in the context of actual use cannot be obtained by laboratory experiment, since QoE can be affected by a variety of factors such as environmental conditions and the mental state of the user. This paper proposes a novel Web script-based field evaluation method designed to ascertain user satisfaction with mobile services. The proposed method has the following practical advantages. Since experimental conditions, especially communication conditions, can be simulated with a Web script, such as FlashLite, a subjective assessment can be conducted anywhere using the mobile terminal of the participant. Thus, QoE for a target mobile service in the field can easily be obtained.

  • Mobile Location Estimation in Wireless Communication Systems

    The objective of wireless location is to determine the mobile station (MS) location in a wireless cellular communications system. When signals are propagated through non-line-of-sight (NLOS) paths, the measurements at the base stations (BSs) contain large errors which result in poor detectability of an MS by the surrounding BSs. In those situations, it is necessary to integrate all available heterogeneous measurements to improve location accuracy. This paper presents hybrid methods that combine time of arrival (TOA) at three BSs and angle of arrival (AOA) information at the serving BS to obtain a location estimate for the MS. The proposed methods mitigate the NLOS effect by using the weighted sum of the intersections between three TOA circles and the AOA line without requiring the a priori knowledge of NLOS error statistics. Numerical results show that all positioning methods offer improved estimation accuracy over those which rely on the two circles and two lines. The proposed methods always achieve better location accuracy than the Taylor series algorithm (TSA) and the hybrid lines of position algorithm (HLOP) do, regardless of the NLOS error statistics.

    We propose a neutron diffractometer system based on MgB2 thin film detectors and an SFQ signal processor. Small dimensions of MgB2 thin film detectors and high processing capability of the single flux quantum (SFQ) circuits enable us to handle several thousand or more detectors in a cryocooler, leading to a very compact system. In addition, the system can provide many diffraction patterns for different kinetic energies simultaneously. Kinetic energy is determined for individual neutrons by means of the time-of-flight method by using SFQ time-to-digital converters (TDCs). Digital outputs of the TDCs are multiplexed in time domain and sent to room-temperature electronics with reduced number of cables. A dual-input SFQ signal processor including TDCs and a multiplexer has been successfully demonstrated with a time resolution of 20 ns and power consumption of 400 µW. These values show high feasibility of the neutron diffraction system proposed here.

  • QoS-Aware Bandwidth Allocation Algorithm for Multimedia Service Networks

    Bandwidth is an extremely valuable and scarce resource in multimedia networks. Therefore, efficient bandwidth management is necessary in order to provide high Quality of Service (QoS) to users. In this paper, a new QoS-aware bandwidth allocation algorithm is proposed for the efficient use of available bandwidth. By using the multi-objective optimization technique and Talmud allocation rule, the bandwidth is adaptively controlled to maximize network efficiency while ensuring QoS provisioning. In addition, we adopt the online feedback strategy to dynamically respond to current network conditions. With a simulation study, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can adaptively approximate an optimized solution under widely diverse traffic load intensities.

  • Circulation Technique of Distributed Space Time Trellis Codes with AF Relaying

    In this letter, a circulation-based distributed space time trellis code (DSTTC) technique for amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying is proposed. The proposed circulation technique is a method of configuring new protocols from the existing protocols of which the performance is dependent on specific source to relay links. The simulation results show that the newly developed protocol is less dependent on weak conditions of specific links and a performance gain in frame error rate (FER) can be obtained over the original protocol.

  • Design and Modeling of a High Efficiency Step-Up/Step-Down DC-DC Converter with Smooth Transition

    This paper presents a step-up/step-down DC-DC converter with three operation modes to achieve high efficiency and small output ripple voltage. A constant time buck-boost mode, which is inserted between buck mode and boost mode, is proposed to achieve smooth transition. With the proposed mode, the output ripple voltage is significantly reduced when the input voltage is approximate to the output voltage. Besides, the novel control scheme minimizes the conduction loss by reducing the average inductor current and the switching loss by making the converter operate like a buck or boost converter. The small signal model of the step-up/step-down DC-DC converter is also derived to guide the compensation network design. The step-up/step-down converter is designed with a 0.5 µm CMOS n-well process, and can regulate an output voltage within the input voltage ranged from 2.5 V to 5.5 V with a maximum power efficiency of 96%. The simulation results show that the proposed converter exhibits an output ripple voltage of 28 mV in the transition mode.

    In this letter, we analyze the effect of the size of observed data on the performance of time delay estimation (TDE) in the chirp spread spectrum (CSS) system. By adjusting the size of observed data, we reduce the effect of DC offsets, which would otherwise degrade the performance of TDE based on CSS, and we optimize the performance of TDE in CSS system. Finally, we derive the optimal size of observed data of TDE in CSS system.

    We demonstrate a single-channel 1.28 Tbit/s-525 km transmission using OTDM of subpicosecond DQPSK signals. In order to cope with transmission impairments due to time-varying higher-order PMD, which is one of the major limiting factors in such a long-haul ultrahigh-speed transmission, we newly developed an ultrafast time-domain optical Fourier transformation technique in a round-trip configuration. By applying this technique to subpicosecond pulses, transmission impairments were greatly reduced, and BER performance below FEC limit was obtained with increased system margin.

  • Energy-Saving Stochastic Scheduling of a Real-Time Parallel Task with Varying Computation Amount on Multi-Core Processors

    The proposed scheduling scheme minimizes the mean energy consumption of a real-time parallel task, where the task has the probabilistic computation amount and can be executed concurrently on multiple cores. The scheme determines a pertinent number of cores allocated to the task execution and the instant frequency supplied to the allocated cores. Evaluation shows that the scheme saves manifest amount of the energy consumed by the previous method minimizing the mean energy consumption on a single core.
