In this paper, we applied cavity resonator wireless power transfer (CR WPT) to an enclosed space with scatterers and revealed that high transfer efficiency at line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) position in the power transmitter can be achieved by this method. In addition, we propose a method for limiting the wireless power transfer space utilizing metal mesh and show its effectiveness by experiment. First, we confirm that the constructed experimental model is working as a cavity resonator by theoretical formula and electromagnetic field analysis. Next, we calculate the maximum power transfer efficiency using a model including a plurality of scatterers by installing a power receiver at LOS and NLOS positions in the power transmitter, and it was confirmed that transfer efficiency of 30% or more could be expected even at the NLOS position. Then, we measured the frequency characteristics of a model in which one surface of the outer wall was replaced with a metal mesh, and it was clarified that the characteristics hardly changed in the power transfer frequency band. Finally, we confirmed that simultaneous communication can be performed with driving of the battery-less sensor by CR WPT, and clarify effectiveness of the proposed method.

Free-space optical (FSO) communication, which offers better data rate at a lower cost compared to radio-frequency (RF) backhauls, and is much easier to setup and maintain than optical cables, is gaining attention as an attractive substitute. Average capacity is one of the main performances metrics to understand the connectivity and data rates of a communication system but the performance analysis for mixed RF/FSO link is not straightforward as the RF link and the FSO link experiences different atmospheric perturbations. In this paper, we have investigated the ergodic capacity of a dual-hop mixed RF/FSO communication system realized with an average power scaling (APS) based amplify and forward (AF) relay. Assuming moderate to strong atmospheric turbulence, the FSO link is modeled by gamma-gamma distribution while it is assumed that the RF link experiences multipath Rayleigh fading. Simple analytical methods have been devised for obtaining concise closed-form expressions for ergodic capacity under four different rate/ power adaptation policies and are validated through extensive Monte Carlo simulations.

In at-speed scan testing, capture power is a serious problem because the high power dissipation that can occur when the response for a test vector is captured by flip-flops results in excessive voltage drops, known as IR-drops, which may cause significant capture-induced yield loss. In low capture power test generation, the test vectors that violate capture power constraints in an initial test set are defined as capture-unsafe test vectors, while faults that are detected solely by capture-unsafe test vectors are defined as unsafe faults. It is necessary to regenerate the test vectors used to detect unsafe faults in order to prevent unnecessary yield losses. In this paper, we propose a new low capture power test generation method based on fault simulation that uses capture-safe test vectors in an initial test set. Experimental results show that the use of this method reduces the number of unsafe faults by 94% while requiring just 18% more additional test vectors on average, and while requiring less test generation time compared with the conventional low capture power test generation method.

Since the sensor nodes are subject to faults due to the highly-constrained resources and hostile deployment environments, fault management in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is essential to guarantee the proper operation of networks, especially routing. In contrast to existing fault management methods which mainly aim to be tolerant to faults without considering the fault type, we propose a novel efficient fault-aware routing method where faults are classified and dealt with accordingly. More specifically, we first identify each fault and then try to set up the new routing path according to the fault type. Our proposed method can be easily integrated with any kind of existing routing method. We show that our proposed method outperforms AODV, REAR, and GPSR, which are the representative works of single-path routing, multipath routing and location based routing, in terms of energy efficiency and data delivery ratio.

The history of optical fiber and optical transmission technologies has been described in many publications. However, the history of other technologies designed to support the physical layer of optical transmission has not been described in much detail. I would like to highlight those technologies in addition to optical fibers. Therefore, this paper describes the history of the development of optical fiber related technologies such as fusion splicers, optical fiber connectors, ribbon fiber, and passive components based on changes in optical fibers and optical fiber cables. Moreover, I describe technologies designed to support multi-core fibers such as fan-in/fan-out devices.

  • A Method for Evaluating Degradation Phenomenon of Electrical Contacts Using a Micro-Sliding Mechanism — Minimal Sliding Amplitudes against Input Waveforms (2) —

Authors previously studied the degradation of electrical contacts under the condition of various external micro-oscillations. They also developed a micro-sliding mechanism (MSM2), which causes micro-sliding and is driven by a piezoelectric actuator and elastic hinges. Using the mechanism, experimental results were obtained on the minimal sliding amplitude (MSA) required to make the electrical resistance fluctuate under various conditions. In this paper, to develop a more realistic model of input waveform than the previous one, Ts/2 is set as the rising or falling time, Tc as the flat time, and τ/2 as the duration in a sliding period T (0.25 s) of the input waveform. Using the Duhamel's integral method and an optimization method, the physical parameters of natural angular frequency ω0 (12000 s-1), damping ratio ζ (0.05), and rising and falling time Ts (1.3 or 1.2 ms) are obtained. Using the parameters and the MSA, the total acceleration of the input TA (=f(t)) and the displacement of the output x(t) are also obtained using the Fourier series expansion method. The waveforms x(t) and the experimental results are similar to each other. If the effective mass m, which is defined as that of the movable parts in the MSM2, is 0.1 kg, each total force TF (=2mTA) is estimated from TA and m. By the TF, the cases for 0.3 N/pin as frictional force or in impulsive as input waveform are more serious than the others. It is essential for the safety and the confidence of electrical contacts to evaluate the input waveform and the frictional force. The ringing waveforms of the output displacements x(t) are calculated at smaller values of Ts (1.0, 0.5, and 0.0 ms) than the above values (1.3 or 1.2 ms). When Ts is slightly changed from 1.3 or 1.2 ms to 1.0 ms, the ringing amplitude is doubled. For the degradation of electrical contacts, it is essential that Ts is reduced in a rectangular and impulsive input. Finally, a very simple wear model comprising three stages (I, II, and III) is introduced in this paper. Because Ts is much shorter in a rectangular or impulsive input than in a sinusoidal input, it is considered that the former more easily causes wear than the latter owing to a larger frictional force. Taking the adhesive wear in Stages I and III into consideration, the wear is expected to be more severe in the case of small damped oscillations owing to the ringing phenomenon.

Existing moving object's trajectory prediction algorithms suffer from the data sparsity problem, which affects the accuracy of the trajectory prediction. Aiming to the problem, we present an Entropy-based Sparse Trajectories Prediction method enhanced by Matrix Factorization (ESTP-MF). Firstly, we do trajectory synthesis based on trajectory entropy and put synthesized trajectories into the trajectory space. It can resolve the sparse problem of trajectory data and make the new trajectory space more reliable. Secondly, under the new trajectory space, we introduce matrix factorization into Markov models to improve the sparse trajectory prediction. It uses matrix factorization to infer transition probabilities of the missing regions in terms of corresponding existing elements in the transition probability matrix. It aims to further solve the problem of data sparsity. Experiments with a real trajectory dataset show that ESTP-MF generally improves prediction accuracy by as much as 6% and 4% compared to the SubSyn algorithm and STP-EE algorithm respectively.

The Technical Committee on Communication Behavior Engineering addresses the research question “How do we construct a communication network system that includes users?”. The growth in highly functional networks and terminals has brought about greater diversity in users' lifestyles and freed people from the restrictions of time and place. Under this situation, the similarities of human behavior cause traffic aggregation and generate new problems in terms of the stabilization of network service quality. This paper summarizes previous studies relevant to communication behavior from a multidisciplinary perspective and discusses the research approach adopted by the Technical Committee on Communication Behavior Engineering.

In this paper, we propose a method to diagnose a bridging fault between a clock line and a gate signal line. Assuming that scan based flush tests are applied, we perform fault simulation to deduce candidate faults. By analyzing fault behavior, it is revealed that faulty clock waveforms depend on the timing of the signal transition on a gate signal line which is bridged. In the fault simulation, a backward sensitized path tracing approach is introduced to calculate the timing of signal transitions. Experimental results show that the proposed method deduces candidate faults more accurately than our previous method.

Detecting signals in a very large multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system requires high complexy of implementation. Thus, belief propagation based detection has been studied recently because of its low complexity. When the transmitted signal sequence is encoded using a channel code decodable by a factor-graph-based algorithm, MIMO signal detection and channel decoding can be combined in a single factor graph. In this paper, a low density parity check (LDPC) coded MIMO system is considered, and two types of factor graphs: bipartite and tripartite graphs are compared. The former updates the log-likelihood-ratio (LLR) values at MIMO detection and parity checking simultaneously. On the other hand, the latter performs the updates alternatively. Simulation results show that the tripartite graph achieves faster convergence and slightly better bit error rate performance. In addition, it is confirmed that the LLR damping in LDPC decoding is important for a stable convergence.

In the topologies for interconnected nodes, it is desirable to have a low degree and a small diameter. For the same number of nodes, a dual-cube topology has almost half the degree compared to a hypercube while increasing the diameter by just one. Hence, it is a promising topology for interconnection networks of massively parallel systems. We propose here a stochastic fault-tolerant routing algorithm to find a non-faulty path from a source node to a destination node in a dual-cube.

The growing demand for high-speed data communication has continued to meet the need for ever-increasing I/O bandwidth in recent VLSI systems. However, signal integrity issues, such as intersymbol interference (ISI) and reflections, make the channel band-limited at high-speed data rates. We propose high-speed data transmission techniques for VLSI systems using Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP). Because THP can eliminate ISI by inverting the characteristics of channels with limited peak and average power at the transmitter, it is suitable for implementing advanced low-voltage and high-speed VLSI systems. This paper presents a novel double-rate THP equalization technique especially intended for multi-valued data transmission to further improve THP performance. Simulation and measurement results show that the proposed THP equalization with a double sampling rate can enhance the data transition time and, therefore, improve the eye opening.

This letter studies the price-based power control algorithm for the spectrum sharing cognitive radio networks. The primary user (PU) profits from the secondary users (SUs) by pricing the interference power made by them. The SUs cooperate with each other to maximize their sum revenue with the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) balancing condition. The interaction between the PU and the SUs is modeled as a Stackelberg game. Closed-form expressions of the optimal price for the PU and power allocation for the SUs are given. Simulation results show the proposed algorithm improves the revenue of both the PU and fairness of the SUs compared with the uniform pricing algorithm.

The widespread usage of computers and communication networks affects people's social activities effectively in terms of intercommunication and the communication generally begins with domain name resolutions which are mainly provided by DNS (Domain Name System). Meanwhile, continuous cyber threats to DNS such as cache poisoning also affects computer networks critically. DNSSEC (DNS Security Extensions) is designed to provide secure name resolution between authoritative zone servers and DNS full resolvers. However high workload of DNSSEC validation on DNS full resolvers and complex key management on authoritative zone servers hinder its wide deployment. Moreover, querying clients use the name resolution results validated on DNS full resolvers, therefore they only get errors when DNSSEC validation fails or times out. In addition, name resolution failure can occur on querying clients due to technical and operational issues of DNSSEC. In this paper, we propose a client based DNSSEC validation system with adaptive alert mechanism considering minimal querying client timeout. The proposed system notifies the user of alert messages with answers even when the DNSSEC validation on the client fails or timeout so that the user can determine how to handle the received answers. We also implemented a prototype system and evaluated the features on a local experimental network as well as in the Internet. The contribution of this article is that the proposed system not only can mitigate the workload of DNS full resolvers but also can cover querying clients with secure name resolution, and by solving the existing operation issues in DNSSEC, it also can promote DNSSEC deployment.

The increasing demand on scalability and reusability of system-on-chip design as well as the decoupling between computation and communication has motivated the growth of the Network-on-Chip (NoC) paradigm in the last decade. In NoC-based systems, the computational resources (i.e. IPs) communicate with each other using a network infrastructure. Many works have focused on the development of NoC architectures and routing mechanisms, while the interfacing between network and associated IPs also needs to be considered. In this paper, we present a novel efficient AXI (AMBA eXtensible Interface) compliant network adapter for NoC architectures, which is named an AXI-NoC adapter. The proposed network adapter achieves high communication throughput of 20.8Gbits/s and consumes 4.14mW at the operating frequency of 650MHz. It has a low area footprint (952 gates, approximate to 2,793µm2 with CMOS 45nm technology) thanks to its effective hybrid micro-architectures and with zero latency thanks to the proposed mux-selection method.

Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is one of the most popular machine learning tools for speech enhancement. The supervised NMF-based speech enhancement is accomplished by updating iteratively with the prior knowledge of the clean speech and noise spectra bases. However, in many real-world scenarios, it is not always possible for conducting any prior training. The traditional semi-supervised NMF (SNMF) version overcomes this shortcoming while the performance degrades. In this letter, without any prior knowledge of the speech and noise, we present an improved semi-supervised NMF-based speech enhancement algorithm combining techniques of NMF and robust principal component analysis (RPCA). In this approach, fixed speech bases are obtained from the training samples chosen from public dateset offline. The noise samples used for noise bases training, instead of characterizing a priori as usual, can be obtained via RPCA algorithm on the fly. This letter also conducts a study on the assumption whether the time length of the estimated noise samples may have an effect on the performance of the algorithm. Three metrics, including PESQ, SDR and SNR are applied to evaluate the performance of the algorithms by making experiments on TIMIT with 20 noise types at various signal-to-noise ratio levels. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the competing speech enhancement algorithm.

This paper proposes a new user association method to maximize the downlink system throughput in a cellular network, where the system throughput is defined based on (p,α)-proportional fairness. The proposed method assumes a fully decentralized approach, which is practical in a real system as complicated inter-base station (BS) cooperation is not required. In the proposed method, each BS periodically and individually broadcasts supplemental information regarding its bandwidth allocation to newly connected users. Assisted by this information, each user calculates the expected throughput that will be obtained by connecting to the respective BSs. Each user terminal feeds back the metric for user association to the temporally best BS, which represents a relative increase in throughput through re-association to that BS. Based on the reported metrics from multiple users, each BS individually updates the user association. The proposed method gives a general framework for optimal user association for (p,α)-proportional fairness-based system throughput maximization and is especially effective in heterogeneous cellular networks where low transmission-power pico BSs overlay a high transmission-power macro BS. Computer simulation results show that the proposed method maximizes the system throughput from the viewpoint of the given (p,α)-proportional fairness.

In this paper, we propose a redundant task allocation method for multi-core systems based on the Duplication with Temporary Triple-Modular Redundancy and Reconfiguration (DTTR) scheme. The proposed method determines task allocation of a given task graph to a given multi-core system model from task scheduling in given fault patterns. Fault patterns defined in this paper consist of a set of faulty cores and a set of surviving cores. To optimize the average failure rate of the system, task scheduling minimizes the execution time of the task graph preserving the property of the DTTR scheme. In addition, we propose a selection method of fault patterns to be scheduled to reduce the task allocation time. In the experiments, at first, we evaluate the proposed selection method of fault patterns in terms of the task allocation time. Then, we compare the average failure rate among the proposed method, a task allocation method which packs tasks into particular cores as much as possible, a task allocation method based on Simulated Annealing (SA), a task allocation method based on Integer Linear Programming (ILP), and a task allocation method based on task scheduling without considering the property of the DTTR scheme. The experimental results show that task allocation by the proposed method results in nearly the same average failure rate by the SA based method with shorter task allocation time.

This paper proposes a Preventive Start-time Optimization with no penalty (PSO-NP). PSO-NP determines a suitable set of Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) link weights at the network operation start time that can handle any link failure scenario preventively while considering both failure and non failure scenarios. Preventive Start-time Optimization (PSO) was designed to minimize the worst case congestion ratio (maximum link utilization over all the links in the network) in case of link failure. PSO considers all failure patterns to determine a link weight set that counters the worst case failure. Unfortunately, when there is no link failure, that link weight set leads to a higher congestion ratio than that of the conventional start-time optimization scheme. This penalty is perpetual and thus a burden especially in networks with few failures. In this work, we suppress that penalty while reducing the worst congestion ratio by considering both failure and non failure scenarios. Our proposed scheme, PSO-NP, is simple and effective in that regard. We expand PSO-NP into a Generalized Preventive Start-time Optimization (GPSO) to find a link weight set that balances both the penalty under no failure and the congestion ratio under the worst case failure. Simulation results show that PSO-NP achieves substantial congestion reduction for any failure case while suppressing the penalty in case of no failure in the network. In addition, GPSO as framework is effective in determining a suitable link weight set that considers the trade off between the penalty under non failure and the worst case congestion ratio reduction.

Collaborative filtering with only implicit feedbacks has become a quite common scenario (e.g. purchase history, click-through log, and page visitation). This kind of feedback data only has a small portion of positive instances reflecting the user's interaction. Such characteristics pose great challenges to dealing with implicit recommendation problems. In this letter, we take full advantage of matrix factorization and relative preference to make the recommendation model more scalable and flexible. In addition, we propose to take into consideration the concept of covisitation which captures the underlying relationships between items or users. To this end, we propose the algorithm Integrated Collaborative Filtering for Implicit Feedback incorporating Covisitation (ICFIF-C) to integrate matrix factorization and collaborative ranking incorporating the covisitation of users and items simultaneously to model recommendation with implicit feedback. The experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms on three standard datasets.
