    We propose a composite DCT basis line test signal to evaluate the video quality of a DTV encoder. The proposed composite test signal contains a frame index, a calibration square wave, and 7-field basis signals. The results show that the proposed method may be useful for an in-service video quality verifier, using an ordinary oscilloscope instead of special equipment.

    Large-scale introduction of renewable energy such as photovoltaic energy and wind is a big motivation for renovating conventional grid systems. To be independent from existing power grids and to use renewable energy as much as possible, a decentralized energy network is proposed as a new grid system. The decentralized energy network is placed among houses to connect them with each other, and each house has a PV panel and a battery. A contribution of this paper is a network topology and battery size exploration for the decentralized energy network in order to make effective use of renewable energy. The proposed method for exploring the decentralized energy network design is inspired by the design methodology of VLSI systems, especially design space exploration in system-level design. The proposed method is based on mixed integer programming (MIP) base power flow optimization, and it was evaluated for all design instances. Experimental results show that the decentralized energy network has the following features. 1) The energy loss and energy purchased due to power shortage were not affected by each battery size but largely affected by the sum of all battery sizes in the network, and 2) the network topology did not largely affect the energy loss and the purchased energy. These results will become a useful guide to designing an optimal decentralized energy network for each region.

    In order to prevent the degradation of TCP performance while traversing two WLANs, we present an implementation design of an inter-domain TCP handover method based on cross-layer and multi-homing. The proposed handover manager (HM) in the transport layer uses two TCP connections previously established via two WLANs (multi-homing) and switches the communication path between the two connections according to the handover trigger and the comparison of new/old APs. The handover trigger and comparison are conducted by assessing the wireless link quality using the frame-retry information obtained from the MAC layer (cross-layer). In a previous study, we proposed a preliminary concept for this method and evaluated its functional effectiveness through simulations. In the present study, we design an implementation considering a real system and then examine the effective performance in a real environment because a real system has several system constraints and suffers from fluctuations in an actual wireless environment. Indeed, depending on the cross-layer design, the implementation often degrades the system performance even if the method exhibits good functional performance. Moreover, the simple assessments of wireless link quality in the previous study indicated unnecessary handovers and inappropriate AP selection in a real environment. Therefore, we herein propose a new architecture that performs cross-layer collaboration between the MAC layer and the transport layer while avoiding degradation of system performance. In addition, we use a new assessment scheme of wireless link quality, i.e., double thresholds of frame retry and comparison of frame retry ratio, in order to prevent handover oscillation caused by fluctuations in the wireless environment. The experimental results demonstrate that the prototype system works well by controlling two TCP connections based on assessments of wireless link quality thereby achieving efficient inter-domain TCP handover in a real WLAN environment.

    We propose a sound field control system to control the sound over a wide area within a room by reducing the influence of the reproduction space using power envelope inverse filtering (PEIF). Envelopes of the impulse response within the room have approximately the same shape at all observation points. Therefore, the proposed sound field control system can control with a small number of loudspeakers a wider area by reducing reverberation in the room through envelope processing. We present experimental data demonstrating that the proposed PEIF system can provide better control than a system that uses minimum phase inverse filtering (MPIF), which is conventionally used for reducing reverberation. Improvement was observed across the frequency band, especially above 1 kHz. Additionally, our PEIF system is more effective over the high-frequency range.

  • Sparse Placement of Wavelength Convertible 3R Regenerators and Joint Resource Assignment in Large-Scale Optical Networks

    It is believed that the wavelength switched optical network (WSON) technology is moving towards being adopted by large-scale networks. Wavelength conversion and signal regeneration through reamplifying, reshaping, and retiming (3R) are beneficial to support the expansion of WSON. In many cases, these two functions can be technically integrated into a single shared physical component, namely the wavelength convertible 3R regenerator (WC3R). However, fully deploying such devices is infeasible due to their excessive cost. Thus, this topic serves as a motivation behind the investigation of the sparse placement issue of WC3Rs presented in this paper. A series of strategies are proposed based on knowledge of the network. Moreover, a novel adaptive routing and joint resource assignment algorithm is presented to provision the lightpaths in WSON with sparsely placed WC3Rs. Extensive simulation trials are conducted under even and uneven distribution of WC3R resource. Each strategic feature is examined for its efficiency in lowering the blocking probability. The results reveal that carefully designed sparse placement of WC3Rs can achieve performance comparable to that of full WC3R placement scenario. Furthermore, the expenditure of WC3R deployment also depends on the type of used WC3Rs characterized by the wavelength convertibility, i.e., fixed WC3R or tunable WC3R. This paper also investigates WSON from the perspective of cost and benefit by employing different types of WC3Rs in order to find the possibility of more efficient WC3R investment.

    This paper investigates a preprocessing technique for a multiuser MIMO downlink system. An efficient joint precoder design with adaptive power allocation is proposed by adopting the channel-diagonalization technique and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. By exploiting an MMSE-based decoder, we propose an iterative algorithm to design the precoder with further derived closed-form solutions for implementing adaptive power allocation. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed approach. Compared with conventional benchmark schemes, they show that our proposal matches the performance but with reduced computational complexity.

  • One-Round Authenticated Key Exchange with Strong Forward Secrecy in the Standard Model against Constrained Adversary

    Forward secrecy (FS) is a central security requirement of authenticated key exchange (AKE). Especially, strong FS (sFS) is desirable because it can guarantee security against a very realistic attack scenario that an adversary is allowed to be active in the target session. However, most of AKE schemes cannot achieve sFS, and currently known schemes with sFS are only proved in the random oracle model. In this paper, we propose a generic construction of AKE protocol with sFS in the standard model against a constrained adversary. The constraint is that session-specific intermediate computation results (i.e., session state) cannot be revealed to the adversary for achieving sFS, that is shown to be inevitable by Boyd and González Nieto. However, our scheme maintains weak FS (wFS) if session state is available to the adversary. Thus, our scheme satisfies one of strongest security definitions, the CK+ model, which includes wFS and session state reveal. The main idea to achieve sFS is to use signcryption KEM while the previous CK+ secure construction uses ordinary KEM. We show a possible instantiation of our construction from Diffie-Hellman problems.

  • A Generation Method of Amplitude-Only Images with Low Intensity Ranges

    In this paper, 1) it is shown that amplitude-only images (AOIs) have quite wide intensity ranges (IRs), and 2) an IR reduction method for AOIs is proposed. An AOI is the inversely transformed amplitude spectra of an image, and it is used in the privacy- and copyright-protected image trading system because of its invisibility. Since an AOI is the coherent summation of cosine waves with the same phase, the IR of the AOI is too large to be stored and/or transmitted. In the proposed method, random signs are applied to discrete Fourier transformed amplitude coefficients to obtained AOIs with significantly lower IRs without distortion while keeping the invisibility of images. With reasonable processing time, high correct watermark extracting rates, inversely quantized AOIs with low mean squared errors, and reconstructed images with high peak signal-to-noise ratios are obtained by a linear quantizer in the proposed method.

    This paper provides a novel normalized sign least-mean square (NSLMS) algorithm which updates only a part of the filter coefficients and simultaneously performs sparse updates with the goal of reducing computational complexity. A combination of the partial-update scheme and the set-membership framework is incorporated into the context of L∞-norm adaptive filtering, thus yielding computational efficiency. For the stabilized convergence, we formulate a robust update recursion by imposing an upper bound of a step size. Furthermore, we analyzed a mean-square stability of the proposed algorithm for white input signals. Experimental results show that the proposed low-complexity NSLMS algorithm has similar convergence performance with greatly reduced computational complexity compared to the partial-update NSLMS, and is comparable to the set-membership partial-update NLMS.

    In 2004, Menezes and Smart left an open problem that is whether there exists a realistic scenario where message and key substitution (MKS) attacks can have damaging consequences. In this letter, we show that MKS attacks can have damaging consequences in practice, by pointing out that a verifiably encrypted signature (VES) scheme is not opaque if MKS attacks are possible.

    This paper describes a high-speed, robust, scalable, and low-cost feed-forward time amplifier that uses phase detectors and variable delay lines. The amplifier works by detecting the time difference between two rising input edges with a phase detector and adjusting the delay of the variable delay line accordingly. A test chip was designed and fabricated in 65 nm CMOS. The measured resulting performance indicates that it is possible to amplify time difference while maintaining high-speed operation.

    Given a simple connected graph G with n vertices, the spanning tree problem involves finding a tree that connects all the vertices of G. Solutions to this problem have applications in electrical power provision, computer network design, circuit analysis, among others. It is known that highly efficient sequential or parallel algorithms can be developed by restricting classes of graphs. Circular trapezoid graphs are proper superclasses of trapezoid graphs. In this paper, we propose an O(n) time algorithm for the spanning tree problem on a circular trapezoid graph. Moreover, this algorithm can be implemented in O(log n) time with O(n/log n) processors on EREW PRAM computation model.

    This paper describes algorithms for generating low intermodulation-distortion (IMD) two-tone sinewaves, for such as communication application ADC testing, using an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) or a multi-bit ΣΔ DAC inside an SoC. The nonlinearity of the DAC generates distortion components, and we propose here eight methods to precompensate for the IMD using DSP algorithms and produce low-IMD two-tone signals. Theoretical analysis, simulation, and experimental results all demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

After having been used commercially, many unpredictable requirements have emerged, including mobility, security and content distribution. In addition, the Internet has become so ossified that fulfilling new requirements is difficult. Instead of developing ad-hoc solutions, re-designing clean-slate Internet architectures has become a key research challenge in networking communities. This survey paper addresses key research issues and then introduces ongoing research projects from Japan, the United States and the European Union.

    The response of differential pairs against low-frequency substrate voltage variation is captured in a combined transistor and substrate network models. The model generation is regularized for variation of transistor geometries including channel sizes, fingering and folding, and the placements of guard bands. The expansion of the models for full-chip substrate noise analysis is also discussed. The substrate sensitivity of differential pairs is evaluated through on-chip substrate coupling measurements in a 90 nm CMOS technology with more than 64 different geometries and operating conditions. The trends and strengths of substrate sensitivity are shown to be well consistent between simulation and measurements.

    At Eurocrypt'03, Boneh, Gentry, Lynn and Shacham proposed a pairing based verifiably encrypted signature scheme (the BGLS-VES scheme). In 2004, Hess mounted an efficient rogue-key attack on the BGLS-VES scheme in the plain public-key model. In this letter, we show that the BGLS-VES scheme is not secure in the proof of possession (POP) model.

    In the field of Factory Automation (FA), process control, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), an analog data acquisition system using isolation transformers is commonly used to measure and record analog signals through isolated inputs. In order to improve the input precision of the acquisition system, circuit techniques and a design method of the analog frontend circuit with the signal transformers are proposed in this paper. A circuit technique to compensate for the droop of the pulse signal due to the characteristics of the signal transformer is employed. Also, a numerical analysis of a non-linear circuit equation, which represents a behavior of the core saturation of the signal transformer, is performed in order to determine the parameters of the circuit. Using a small signal transformer, dedicatedly developed for this acquisition system, the performance of the precision achieved for the linearity error is experimentally confirmed within +0.0204%/-0.0215%.

    This paper presents a bistatic remote sensing system to efficiently estimate the characteristics of sea swell near a harbor by receiving and processing global navigation satellite system signals transmitted in line-of-sight channels and fading multipath channels. The new system is designed to measure and monitor sea swell to improve the safety of mooring and navigation services in or around harbors, and long-term measurement also will provide valuable hydrologic data for harbor construction or reconstruction. The system uses two sets of antennas. One is a conventional antenna to receive line-of-sight signal and mitigate the disturbances from multiple propagation paths, and the other is a left hand circular polarization arrayed antenna to receive reflected signals from sea-surface. In particular, a wide bandwidth RF/IF front-end is designed to process reflected signals with high sampling frequency. A software receiver is developed to provide information from satellites and line-of-sight signals, and a wave characteristic estimator is also developed to process reflected signals. More specifically, correlators and Teager-Kaiser energy operator are combined to detect and depict reflected signals. Wave propagation of sea swell can be accurately mapped using intensity and relative time delays of reflected signals. The operational performance of the remote sensing system was also evaluated by numerical simulations. The results confirm that wavelength and wave period can be measured precisely by the proposed bistatic ocean wave remote sensing system.

  • Recovery of Missing Samples from Oversampled Bandpass Signals and Its Stability

    We present a multi-channel sampling expansion for signals with selectively tiled band-region. From this we derive an oversampling expansion for any bandpass signal, and show that any finitely many missing samples from two-channel oversampling expansion can always be uniquely recovered. In addition, we find a sufficient condition under which some infinitely many missing samples can be recovered. Numerical stability of the recovery process is also discussed in terms of the oversampling rate and distribution of the missing samples.

  • Equivalent Circuit Representation of Silicon Substrate Coupling of Passive and Active RF Components

    Substrate coupling of radio frequency (RF) components is represented by equivalent circuits unifying a resistive mesh network with lumped capacitors in connection with the backside of device models. Two-port S-parameter test structures are used to characterize the strength of substrate coupling of resistors, capacitors, inductors, and MOSFETs in a 65 nm CMOS technology with different geometries and dimensions. The consistency is finely demonstrated between simulation with the equivalent circuits and measurements of the test structures, with the deviation of typically less than 3 dB for passive and 6 dB for active components, in the transmission properties for the frequency range of interest up to 8 GHz.
