    We formally define the mobile agent allocation problem from a system-wide viewpoint and then prove that it is strongly NP-complete even if each agent communicates only with two agents. This is the first formal definition for scheduling mobile agents from the viewpoint of load balancing, which enables us to discuss its properties on a rigorous basis. The problem is recognized as preemptive scheduling with independent tasks that require mutual communication. The result implies that almost all subproblems of mobile agent allocation, which require mutual communication of agents, are strongly NP-complete.

    Single cell reuse of the same frequency, which is possible in DS-CDMA cellular systems, yields the option of site diversity to increase link capacity. In this letter, a generalized case of site diversity transmission is considered where multiple base stations (BS's) are involved in weighted transmissions with constant total transmit power to a target mobile station (MS). A general equation of conditional bit error rate (BER) is derived based on the model of weighted transmissions combined with antenna diversity reception and rake combining. It turns out theoretically that the optimum set of weights to maximize forward link capacity makes site selection diversity transmission (SSDT) the best performer. This theoretical analysis is confirmed by performance evaluation based on the Monte-Carlo simulation.

    This paper proposes a new angular measurement system to a moving target in the presence of clutter. We apply MUSIC (MUltiple SIgnal Classification) to the outputs of a Doppler filter bank consisting of quadrature mirror filter (QMF). The comparison between QMF and the short time Fourier transform (STFT) as a preprocessor of MUSIC is also discussed. DOA estimation performance by QMF-MUSIC is nearly equal to that of STFT-MUSIC. On the other hand, QMF-MUSIC overcomes STFT-MUSIC in the aspect of computational cost. In a specific example in this paper, the proposal QMF bank by Daubechies (4th order) wavelet requires 80% fewer the number of multiplications and 25% fewer the number of additions than the FFT-based STFT filter bank.

    RF MOSFET's are usually measured in common source configuration by a 2-port network analyzer, and the common gate and common drain S-parameters cannot be directly measured from a conventional 2-port test structure. In this work, a 4-port test structure for on-wafer measurement of RF MOSFET's is proposed. Four-port measurements for RF MOSFET's in different dimensions and the de-embedded procedures are performed up to 20 GHz. The S-parameters of the RF MOSFET in common source (CS), common gate (CG), and common drain (CD) configurations are obtained from a single DUT and one measurement procedure. The dependence of common source S-parameters of the device on substrate bias are also shown.

    This paper reports on the bending loss insensitive single mode fiber suitable for access networks, which is applicable for wide wavelength use. Excellent attenuation stability of the fiber in the full spectrum range has been confirmed even in severe conditions such as fiber handling in mid-span access at aerial closure, cable installation/handling in indoor wirings and so on. Also, applications suitable for FTTH subscribers' use have been introduced.

    We have developed a visualization system for dialog text exchanged in e-learning virtual classrooms. In this system, text-based online discussions among learners are effectively visualized as discussions held in a virtual classroom in cyberspace. Discussion participants are displayed as avatars. The virtual classroom maintains the interest of learners because it incorporates professional camerawork and switching know-how based on rules derived from an analysis of 42 TV programs. The gestures of the CG avatar depend on the dialog text. A series of virtual classroom experiments confirmed that elementary and junior high school students maintained an interest in using the system.

    A test structure and method for two-dimensional analysis of fabrication process variation of MOSFET using a photoemission microscope are presented. Arrays of 2010 (=200) MOSFETs were successfully measured at a time and evaluated the fluctuation of their characteristics. The fluctuation of hot-carrier-induced photoemission intensity was larger as gate length becomes smaller. Although the intensity fluctuation of photoemission in the same MOSFET was within small range, the fluctuation all over the MOSFET array was relatively large and independent of the position in the array. An estimation method of the gate length fluctuation has been demonstrated with the photoemission intensity distribution analysis.

    Web browsing task is based on depth-first searching scheme, so that searching relevant information from Web may be very tedious. In this paper, we propose personal browsing assistant system based on user intentions modeling. Before explicitly requested by a user, this system can analyze the prefetched resources from the hyperlinked Webpages and compare them with the estimated user intention, so that it can help him to make a better decision like which Webpage should be requested next. More important problem is the semantic heterogeneity between Web spaces. It makes the understandability of locally annotated resources more difficult. We apply semantic annotation, which is a transcoding procedure with the global ontology. Therefore, each local metadata can be semantically enriched, and efficiently comparable. As testing bed of our experiment, we organized three different online clothes stores whose images are annotated by semantically heterogeneous metadata. We simulated virtual customers navigating these cyberspaces. According to the predefined preferences of customer models, they conducted comparison-shopping. We have shown the reasonability of supporting the Web browsing, and its performance was evaluated as measuring the total size of browsed hyperspace.

  • A New Inductance Extraction Technique of On-Wafer Spiral Inductor Based on Analytical Interconnect Formula

    A new inductance extraction technique of spiral inductor from measurement fixture is presented. We propose a scalable expression of parasitic inductance for interconnects, and design consideration of test structure accommodating spiral inductor. The simple expression includes mutual inductance between the interconnects with high accuracy. The formula matches a commercial field solver inductance values within 1.4%. The layout of the test structure to reduce magnetic coupling between the spiral and the interconnects allows us to extract the intrinsic inductance of spiral more accurately. The proposed technique requires neither special fixture used for measurement-based method nor skilled worker for precise extraction with the analytical technique used.

    This paper presents a long length discrete Hartley transform (DHT) design with a new hardware efficient distributed arithmetic (DA) approach. The new DA design approach not only explores the constant property of coefficients as the conventional DA, but also exploits its cyclic property. To efficiently apply this approach to long length DHT, we first decompose the long length DHT algorithm to short ones using the prime factor algorithm (PFA), and further reformulate it by using Agarwal-Cooley algorithm such that all the partitioned short DHT still consists of the cyclic property. Besides, we also exploit the scheme of computation sharing on the content of ROM to reduce the hardware cost with the trade-off in slowing down the computing speeds. Comparing with the existing designs shows that the proposed design can reduce the area-delay product from 52% to 91% according to a 0.35 µm CMOS cell library.

    In 1998, Tseng and Jan proposed a lightweight interactive user identification protocol based on ID-based cryptography. Recently, Hwang et al. modified their protocol to reduce the responding and waiting time for wireless network applications. In this letter, we show that their scheme is vulnerable to impersonation attacks.

    We describe a transmission system having a data rate of 160 Gbit/s based on the RZ-DPSK modulation format. The 160 Gbit/s single-polarization signal is generated by optical time division multiplexing technology using the base rate of 40 Gbit/s. The setup is explained and results are given with a special focus on the stability issue of the transmission system. The pulse source, the optical gate for demultiplexing, the clock recovery and the balanced photo-detector are based on semiconductor components. We present long-term bit error measurements (10 hours) over two different long-haul fiber links. The first link comprises 3106 km standard single mode fiber and uses a PMD mitigation scheme. The other link consists of 4 dispersion managed 80 km fiber spans without the need for an additional PMD compensation. Using EDFA amplification solely and also no FEC, error-free operation was achieved over several hours, only limited by slow drift effects in the laboratory system.

  • Cryptanalysis of Ha-Moon's Countermeasure of Randomized Signed Scalar Multiplication

    Side channel attacks (SCA) are serious attacks on mobile devices. In SCA, the attacker can observe the side channel information while the device performs the cryptographic operations, and he/she can detect the secret stored in the device using such side channel information. Ha-Moon proposed a novel countermeasure against side channel attacks in elliptic curve cryptosystems (ECC). The countermeasure is based on the signed scalar multiplication with randomized concept, and does not pay the penalty of speed. Ha-Moon proved that the countermeasure is secure against side channel attack theoretically, and confirmed its immunity experimentally. Thus Ha-Moon's countermeasure seems to be very attractive. In this paper we propose a novel attack against Ha-Moon's countermeasure, and show that the countermeasure is vulnerable to the proposed attack. The proposed attack utilizes a Markov chain for detecting the secret. The attacker determines the transitions in the Markov chain using side channel information, then detects the relation between consecutive two bits of the secret key, instead of bits of the secret key as they are. The use of such relations drastically reduces the search space for the secret key, and the attacker can easily reveal the secret. In fact, around twenty observations of execution of the countermeasure are sufficient to detect the secret in the case of the standard sizes of ECC. Therefore, the single use of Ha-Moon's countermeasure is not recommended for cryptographic use.

  • Small Antennas: Downsizing Techniques and Its Index Factor

    In this paper, we present the classification of small antennas based on statistical data. The three categories of downsizing methods are loading a matching circuit, changing the current path, and using dielectric/magnetic materials. These categories are explained using several examples. In this paper, we show that the miminum Q value as a fundamental limit defined by an infinitesimal dipole is effective for determining the index factor of small antennas. Radiation efficiency measurements for small antennas are also discussed.

  • Design Guidelines and Process Quality Improvement for Treatment of Device Variations in an LSI Chip

    We propose guidelines for LSI-chip design, taking the within-die variations into consideration, and for process quality improvement to suppress the variations. The auto-correlation length, λ, of device variation is shown to be a useful measure to treat the systematic variations in a chip. We may neglect the systematic variation in chips within the range of λ, while σ2 of the systematic variation must be added to σ2 of the random variation outside the λ. The random variations, on the other hand, exhibit complete randomness even in the closest pair transistors. The mismatch variations in transistor pairs were enhanced by 1.41(=) compared with the random variations in single transistors. This requires careful choice of gate size in designing a transistor pair with a minimum size, such as transfer gates in an SRAM cell. Poly-Si gate formation is estimated to be the most important process to ensure the spatial uniformity in transistor current and to enhance circuit performance. Large relative variations are observed for the contact to p+ diffusion, via1 (M1-M2), and via2 (M2-M3) among parameter variations in passive elements. The standard deviations for random variations in via1 and via2 are noticeably widespread, indicating the importance of the via resistance control in BEOL. The spatial frequency power spectrum for within-die random variations is confirmed experimentally, as uniform ('white') with respect to the spatial frequency. To treat the large 'white random noise,' the least-square method with a 4th-order polynomial exhibits a best efficiency as a fitting function for decomposing the raw variation data into systematic part and random part.

    We propose new test device structures, Gate-Last-formed structures, which are suitable for fundamental study of high-k gate insulator or metal gate electrode MISFETs. The gate insulator and electrode stack is formed after local interconnect pads connected with source and drain. The gate stack is build in trench formed by dry and wet etching and is non-self-aligned to the source and drain. The wet etching restricts damage formation on the exposed Si surface underneath the trench. Electrical characteristics are measurable just after exposure of surface of the local interconnect pads without conventional Al wiring. This structure can provide methods both for fundamental evaluation and for material selection of new gate stack materials by investigation of MISFET characteristics. This is achieved with short TAT and avoiding contamination penalty to a fab.

  • Another Simple Algorithm for Edge-Coloring Bipartite Graphs

    A new edge-coloring algorithm for bipartite graphs is presented. This algorithm, based on the framework of the O(m log d + (m/d) log (m/d) log d) algorithm by Makino-Takabatake-Fujishige and the O(m log m) one by Alon, finds an optimal edge-coloring of a bipartite graph with m edges and maximum degree d in O(m log d + (m/d) log (m/d)) time. This algorithm does not require elaborate data structures, which the best known O(m log d) algorithm due to Cole-Ost-Schirra depends on.

  • Corporate Knowledge in Cyberworlds

    The aim of this paper is to propose a modeling of corporate knowledge in cyberworlds. An enterprise is considered in the framework of multiagent methodology as a distributed computational system. The Agent-Oriented Abstraction paradigm was proposed earlier to describe in a fully generic way agents and societies of agents. In this paper, we are investigating the application of this paradigm to the abstract modeling of corporate knowledge, extending the scope of traditional knowledge management approaches. We show that such an abstraction mechanism leads to very practical applications for cyberworlds whether on the web or on any other medium. Our approach covers the broader possible scope of corporate knowledge, emphasizing the distributivity and autonomy of agents within cyber systems. This approach can be further used to better simulate and support knowledge management processes.

    When a fixed free-running crystal is used for sampling time generation at a DMT receiver, Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) and Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) are introduced by sampling time error. The ICI becomes more serious as the DMT symbol length increases. In this letter, the effects of sampling clock offset are investigated in the time domain using a new notion of Inter-sample Interference (IsI) instead of ISI and ICI. Based on the IsI analysis, we propose a new frequency domain timing error correction scheme.

    We have developed a model for circuit-simulation which describes the MOSFET region from pinch-off to drain contact based on the surface potential. The model relates the surface-potential increase beyond the pinch-off point to the channel/drain junction profile by applying the Gauss law with the assumption that the lateral field is greater than the vertical one. Explicit equations for the lateral field and the pinch-off length are obtained, which take the potential increase in the drain overlap region into account. The model, as implemented into a circuit simulator, correctly reproduces measured channel conductance and overlap capacitance for 100 nm pocket-implant technologies as a function of bias condition and gate length.
