In this paper, we study a control problem of a concurrent discrete event system, where several subsystems are partially synchronized via shared events, under local and global constraints described by linear temporal logic formulas. We propose a hierarchical control architecture consisting of local supervisors and a coordinator. While the supervisors ensure the local requirements, the coordinator decides which shared events to be disabled so as to satisfy the global specification. First, we construct Rabin games to obtain local supervisors. Next, we reduce them based on shared transitions. Finally, we construct a global Rabin game from the reduced supervisors and a deterministic Rabin automaton that accepts every run satisfying the global specification. By solving it, we obtain a coordinator that disables shared events to guarantee the global requirement. Moreover, the concurrent system controlled by the coordinator and the local supervisors is deadlock-free.

  • Quantized Event-Triggered Control of Discrete-Time Linear Systems with Switching Triggering Conditions

Event-triggered control is a method that the control input is updated only when a certain triggering condition is satisfied. In networked control systems, quantization errors via A/D conversion should be considered. In this paper, a new method for quantized event-triggered control with switching triggering conditions is proposed. For a discrete-time linear system, we consider the problem of finding a state-feedback controller such that the closed-loop system is uniformly ultimately bounded in a certain ellipsoid. This problem is reduced to an LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality) optimization problem. The volume of the ellipsoid may be adjusted. The effectiveness of the proposed method is presented by a numerical example.

In this paper, we consider a similarity control problem for nondeterministic discrete event systems, which requires us to synthesize a nonblocking supervisor such that the supervised plant is simulated by a given specification. We assume that a supervisor can observe not only the event occurrence but also the current state of the plant. We present a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a nonblocking supervisor that solves the similarity control problem and show how to verify it in polynomial time. Moreover, when the existence condition of a nonblocking supervisor is satisfied, we synthesize such a supervisor as a solution to the similarity control problem.

This paper proposes a consensus-based distributed Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm with event-triggered communications for a non-convex and non-differentiable optimization problem. We consider a multi-agent system whose local communications among agents are represented by a fixed and connected graph. Each agent has multiple particles as estimated solutions of global optima and updates positions of particles by an average consensus dynamics on an auxiliary variable that accumulates the past information of the own objective function. In contrast to the existing time-triggered approach, the local communications are carried out only when the difference between the current auxiliary variable and the variable at the last communication exceeds a threshold. We show that the global best can be estimated in a distributed way by the proposed event-triggered PSO algorithm under a diminishing condition of the threshold for the trigger condition.

  • Realizability of Choreography Given by Two Scenarios

For a service-oriented architecture-based system, the problem of synthesizing a concrete model (i.e., behavioral model) for each peer configuring the system from an abstract specification-which is referred to as choreography-is known as the choreography realization problem. A flow of interaction of peers is called a scenario. In our previous study, we showed conditions and an algorithm to synthesize concrete models when choreography is given by one scenario. In this paper, we extend the study for choreography given by two scenarios. We show necessary and sufficient conditions on the realizability of choreography under both cases where there exist conflicts between scenarios and no conflicts exist.

The k-edge-connectivity augmentation problem with multipartition constraints (kECAMP, for short) is defined by “Given a multigraph G=(V,E) and a multipartition π={V1,...,Vr} (r≥2) of V, that is, $V = igcup_{h = 1}^r V_h$ and Vi∩Vj=∅ (1≤i<jr), find an edge set Ef of minimum cardinality, consisting of edges that connect Vi and Vj (ij), such that (V,EEf) is k-edge-connected, where a multigraph means a graph, with unweighted edges, such that multiple edges may exist.” The problem has applications for constructing a fault-tolerant network under building constraints, and so on. In this paper, we give a linear time reduction of (σ+1)ECAMP with |π| ≥ 3 to (σ+1)ECAMP with |π|=2 when the edge-connectivity of G is σ and a structural graph F(G) of G is given.

This paper proposes a scheme for automatic generation of mixed-integer programming problems for scheduling with multiple resources based on colored timed Petri nets. Our method reads Petri net data modeled by users, extracts the precedence and conflict relations among transitions, information on the available resources, and finally generates a mixed integer linear programming for exactly solving the target scheduling problem. The mathematical programing problems generated by our tool can be easily inputted to well-known optimizers. The results of this research can extend the usability of optimizers since our tool requires just simple rules of Petri nets but not deep mathematical knowledge.

  • High Efficiency Power Amplifiers for Mobile Base Stations: Recent Trends and Future Prospects for 5G

    INVITED PAPER

      Page(s):
    374-384

Power amplifiers (PAs) are key components of mobile base stations. In the last decade, the power efficiency of PAs for 3G/4G mobile base stations has risen to over 50% as a result of employing efficiency enhancement techniques, such as Doherty, envelope tracking, and outphasing, in combination with GaN devices and digital predistortion. This trend has significantly contributed to reducing the power consumption of mobile base stations. Furthermore, digital transmitters using switch-mode PAs have the potential of breaking through the 70% efficiency level. Achieving this goal will require advances not only in circuitry but also in device technology. For active antenna systems of 5G mobile systems, ease of integration, as well as high efficiency, becomes important for PAs, and thus, Si-based devices will play a major role.

  • Progress of the Linear RF Power Amplifier for Mobile Phones

In mobile phone systems, the 4th generation is widely prevailing in 2017, and in 2020, it is expected that the 5th generation (5G) will start to prevail. In both generations, a linear power amplifier (PA) is used. In case of 4G, in addition, such as the envelope tracking (ET) and the digital predistortion (DPD) systems are applied to improve efficiency and linearity. In case of 5G, because of wider modulation band width and parallel operation under the multiple-input and multiple output (MIMO) mode, it might be difficult to apply all systems as those of 4G. Therefore linear PA for 5G will require higher performance with standalone operation. The linear amplifier, in spite of its name, operates non-linearly. In this paper, the non-linear operations of the linear amplifier and their effects on the linearity characteristics are reviewed. After that, impacts of non-linear elements of a hetero junction bipolar transistor (HBT), by analyzing single stage amplifier, are stated. In addition, major PA architectures including ET and DPD systems are reviewed.

This paper presents a novel circuit for impedance matching to a load moving along a transmission line. This system is called FERMAT: Far-End Reactor MATching. The FERMAT consists of a power transmission line and a variable reactor at its far-end. The proposed system moves standing-wave antinodes to the position of the vehicle in motion. Therefore, the moving vehicle can be fed well at any position on the line. As a theoretical result, we derive adjustable matching conditions in FERMAT. We verified that the experimental result well agrees with the theory.

This paper describes the design and experiment results of a 25Gbps vertical-cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) driver circuit for a multi channel optical transmitter. To compensate for the non-linearity of the VCSEL and achieve high speed data rate communication, an asymmetric pre-emphasis technique is proposed for the VCSEL driver. An asymmetric pre-emphasis signal can be created by adjusting the duty ratio of the emphasis signal. The VCSEL driver adopts a double cascode connection that can apply a drive current from a high voltage DC bias and feed-forward compensation that can enhance the band-width for common-cathode VCSEL. For the design of the optical module structure, a two-tier low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) package is adopted to minimize the wire bonding between the signal pad on the LTCC and the anode pad on the VCSEL. This structure and circuit reduces the simulated deterministic jitter from 12.7 to 4.1ps. A test chip was fabricated with the 65-nm standard CMOS process and demonstrated to work as an optical transmitter. An experimental evaluation showed that this VCSEL driver with asymmetric pre-emphasis reduced the total deterministic jitter up to 8.6ps and improved the vertical eye opening ratio by 3% compared with symmetric pre-emphasis at 25Gbps with a PRBS=29-1 test signal. The power consumption of the VCSEL driver was 3.0mW/Gbps/ch at 25Gbps. An optical transmitter including the VCSEL driver achieved 25-Gbps, 4-ch fully optical links.

  • Optimal Design Method of Sub-Ranging ADC Based on Stochastic Comparator

An optimal design method for a sub-ranging Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) based on stochastic comparator is demonstrated by performing theoretical analysis of random comparator offset voltages. If the Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) of the comparator offset is defined appropriately, we can calculate the PDFs of the output code and the effective resolution of a stochastic comparator. It is possible to model the analog-to-digital conversion accuracy (defined as yield) of a stochastic comparator by assuming that the correlations among the number of comparator offsets within different analog steps corresponding to the Least Significant Bit (LSB) of the output transfer function are negligible. Comparison with Monte Carlo simulation verifies that the proposed model precisely estimates the yield of the ADC when it is designed for a reasonable target yield of >0.8. By applying this model to a stochastic comparator we reveal that an additional calibration significantly enhances the resolution, i.e., it increases the Number of Bits (NOB) by ∼ 2 bits for the same target yield. Extending the model to a stochastic-comparator-based sub-ranging ADC indicates that the ADC design parameters can be tuned to find the optimal resource distribution between the deterministic coarse stage and the stochastic fine stage.

A 2nd-order ΔΣAD modulator architecture is proposed to simplify the operation phase using ring amplifier and SAR quantizer. The proposed modulator architecture can guarantee the reset time for ring amplifier and relax the speed requirement on asynchronous SAR quantizer. The SPICE simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed 2nd-order ΔΣAD modulator in 90nm CMOS technology. Simulated SNDR of 95.70dB is achieved while a sinusoid -1dBFS input is sampled at 60MS/s for the bandwidth is BW=470kHz. The power consumption of the analog part in the modulator is 1.67mW while the supply voltage is 1.2V.

This letter presents a 12-bit column-parallel hybrid two-step successive approximation register/single-slope analog-to-digital converter (SAR/SS ADC) for CMOS image sensor (CIS). For achieving a high conversion speed, a simple SAR ADC is used in upper 6-bit conversion and a conventional SS ADC is used in lower 6-bit conversion. To reduce the power consumption, a comparator is shared in each column, and a 6-bit ramp generator is shared by all columns. This ADC is designed in SMIC 0.18µm CMOS process. At a clock frequency of 22.7MHz, the conversion time is 3.2µs. The ADC has a DNL of -0.31/+0.38LSB and an INL of -0.86/+0.8LSB. The power consumption of each column ADC is 89µW and the ramp generator is 763µW.

In this work, the metal-oxide-metal (MOM) capacitor in the scaled CMOS process has been modeled at high frequencies using an EM simulator, and its layout has been optimized. The modeled parasitic resistance consists of four components, and the modeled parasitic inductance consists of the comb inductance and many mutual inductances. Each component of the parasitic resistance and inductance show different degrees of dependence on the finger length and on the number of fingers. The substrate network parameters also have optimum points. As such, the geometric dependence of the characteristics of the MOM capacitor is investigated and the optimum layout in the constant-capacitance case is proposed by calculating the results of the model. The proposed MOM capacitor structures for 50fF at f =60GHz are L =5μm with M =3, and, L =2μm with M =5 and that for 100fF at f =30GHz are L =9μm with M =3, and L =4μm with M =5. The target process is 65-nm CMOS.

Block-state realization of state-space digital filters offers reduced implementation complexity relative to canonical state-space filters while filter's internal structure remains accessible. In this paper, we present a quantitative analysis on l2 coefficient sensitivity of block-state digital filters. Based on this, we develop two techniques for minimizing average l2-sensitivity subject to l2-scaling constraints. One of the techniques is based on a Lagrange function and some matrix-theoretic techniques. The other solution method converts the problem at hand into an unconstrained optimization problem which is solved by using an efficient quasi-Newton algorithm where the key gradient evaluation is done in closed-form formulas for fast and accurate execution of quasi-Newton iterations. A case study is presented to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

A ripple-free dual-rate control system is designed for a single-input single-output dual-rate system, in which the sampling interval of a plant output is longer than the holding interval of a control input. The dual-rate system is converged to a multi-input single-output single-rate system using the lifting technique, and a control system is designed based on an error system using the steady-state variable. Because the proposed control law is designed so that the control input is constant in the steady state, the intersample output as well as the sampled output converges to the set-point without both steady-state error and intersample ripples when there is neither modeling nor disturbance. Furthermore, in the proposed method, a two-degree-of-freedom integral compensation is designed, and hence, the transient response is not deteriorated by the integral action because the integral action is canceled when there is neither modeling nor disturbance. Moreover, in the presence of the modeling error or disturbance, the integral compensation is revealed, and hence, the steady-state error is eliminated on both the intersample and sampled response.

The problem of evaluating the matrix polynomial I+A+A2+…+AN-1 with a reduced number of matrix multiplications has long been considered. Several algorithms have been proposed for this problem, which find a procedure requiring O(log N) matrix multiplications for a given N. Among them, the hybrid algorithm based on the double-base representation of N, i.e., using mixed radices 2 and 3, proposed by Dimitrov and Cooklev is most efficient. It has been suggested by them that the use of higher radices would not bring any more efficient algorithms. In this paper, we show that we can derive more efficient algorithms by using higher radices, and propose several efficient algorithms.

This paper proposes a fast safe-region generation method for several kinds of vicinity queries including set k nearest neighbor (NN) queries, ordered kNN queries, reverse kNN queries, and distance range queries. When a user is driving a car on a road network, he/she wants to know about objects located in the vicinity of the car. However, the result changes according to the movement of the car, and therefore, the user needs to request up-to-date result to the server. On the other hand, frequent requests for up-to-date results cause heavy loadings on the server. To cope with this problem efficiently, the idea of the safe-region has been proposed, however, it takes long processing time in existing works. This paper proposes a fast generation method of the safe-region applicable to several types of vicinity queries. Through experimental evaluations, we demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the existing algorithms in the processing time by one or two orders of magnitude.

Compressive spectral imaging (CSI) systems capture the 3D spatiospectral data by measuring the 2D compressed focal plane array (FPA) coded projection with the help of reconstruction algorithms exploiting the sparsity of signals. However, the contradiction between the multi-dimension of the scenes and the limited dimension of the sensors has limited improvement of recovery performance. In order to solve the problem, a novel CSI system based on a coded aperture snapshot spectral imager, RGB-CASSI, is proposed, which has two branches, one for CASSI, another for RGB images. In addition, considering that conventional reconstruction algorithms lead to oversmoothing, a RGB-guided low-rank (RGBLR) method for compressive hyperspectral image reconstruction based on compressed sensing and coded aperture spectral imaging system is presented, in which the available additional RGB information is used to guide the reconstruction and a low-rank regularization for compressive sensing and a non-convex surrogate of the rank is also used instead of nuclear norm for seeking a preferable solution. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm performs better in both PSNR and subjective effects compared with other state-of-art methods.

In this study, we first developed a simultaneous measurement system for accommodation and convergence eye movement and evaluated its precision. Then, using a stuffed animal as the target, whose depth should be relatively easy to perceive, we measured convergence eye movement and accommodation at the same time while a tablet displaying a 3D movie was moved in the depth direction. By adding the real 3D display depth movement to the movement of the 3D image, subjects showed convergence eye movement that corresponds appropriately to the dual change of parallax in the 3D movie and real display, even when a subject's convergence changed very little. Accommodation also changed appropriately according to the change in depth.

An FPGA-based hardware hand sign recognition system was proposed in our previous work. The hand sign recognition system consisted of a preprocessing and a self-organizing map (SOM)-Hebb classifier. The training of the SOM-Hebb classifier was carried out by an off-chip computer using training vectors given by the system. The recognition performance was reportedly improved by adding perturbation to the training data. The perturbation was added manually during the process of image capture. This paper proposes a new off-chip training method with automatic performance improvement. To improve the system's recognition performance, the off-chip training system adds artificially generated perturbation to the training feature vectors. Advantage of the proposed method compared to additive scale perturbation to image is its low computational cost because the number of feature vector elements is much less than that of pixels contained in image. The feasibility of the proposed off-chip training was tested in simulations and experiments using American sign language (ASL). Simulation results showed that the proposed perturbation computation alters the feature vector so that it is same as the one obtained by a scaled image. Experimental results revealed that the proposed off-chip training improved the recognition accuracy from 78.9% to 94.3%.

  • A Semidefinite Programming Approach for Doppler Frequency Shift Based Stationary Target Localization

    LETTER-Digital Signal Processing

In this work, we address the stationary target localization problem by using Doppler frequency shift (DFS) measurements. Based on the measurement model, the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) of the target position is reformulated as a constrained weighted least squares (CWLS) problem. However, due to its non-convex nature, it is difficult to solve the problem directly. Thus, in order to yield a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem, we perform a semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique to relax the CWLS problem. Although the SDP is a relaxation of the original MLE, it can facilitate an accurate estimate without post processing. Simulations are provided to confirm the promising performance of the proposed method.

High dynamic range (HDR) images contain more details of the scene as compared to commonly used low dynamic range (LDR) images. The additional information in the HDR images is important for applications such as high-quality graphics rendering, sensing, scene analysis, and surveillance etc. Moreover, HDR images would provide better visualization experience on HDR displays, which might become more common in near future. Therefore, it is important to encode the entire dynamic range of the HDR images. In this paper, a new lossless, four-channel, eight bits per channel, format for encoding floating-point HDR images is proposed. The format is similar to the well-known RGBE format but constructs the E channel differently for better accuracy. Experimental results show that our technique could reduce the rounding error of the RGBE by more than 88%. In addition, there was a reduction of 44.3% in average error for all 33 images in the database used for this study.

In this letter, we study a scenario based on decoupled RF energy harvesting networks (DRF-EHNs) that separate energy sources from information sources to overcome the doubly near-far problem and improve harvesting efficiency. We propose an algorithm to maximize energy efficiency (EE) while satisfying constraints on the maximum transmit power of the hybrid access point (H-AP) and power beacon (PB), while further satisfying constraints on the minimum quality of service and minimum amount of harvested power in multi-user Rayleigh fading channel. Using nonlinear fractional programming and Lagrangian dual decomposition, we optimize EE with four optimization arguments: the transmit power from the H-AP and PB, time-splitting ratio, and power-splitting ratio. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm is more energy-efficient compared to baseline schemes.

In this paper, the problem of target detection and tracking utilizing the single frequency network (SFN) is addressed. Specifically, by exploiting the characteristics of the signal in SFN, a novel likelihood model which avoids the measurement origin uncertain problem in the point measurement model is proposed. The particle filter based track-before-detect (PF-TBD) algorithm is adopted for the proposed SFN likelihood to detect and track the possibly existed target. The advantage of using TBD algorithm is that it is suitable for the condition of low SNR, and specially, in SFN, it can avoid the data association between the measurement and the transmitters. The performance of the adopted algorithm is examined via simulations.

Block compressed sensing with random permutation (BCS-RP) has been shown to be very effective for image Encryption-then-Compression (ETC) applications. However, in the BCS-RP scheme, the statistical information of the blocks is disclosed, because the encryption is conducted within each small block of the image. To solve this problem, a two-dimension compressed sensing (2DCS) with 2D random permutation (2DRP) strategy for image ETC applications is proposed in this letter, where the 2DRP strategy is used for encrypting the image and the 2DCS scheme is used for compressing the encrypted image. Compared with the BCS-RP scheme, the proposed approach has two benefits. Firstly, it offers better security. Secondly, it obtains a significant gain of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of the reconstructed-images.

Codes over permutations and multipermutations have received considerable attention since the rank modulation scheme is presented for flash memories. Deletions in multipermutations often occur due to data synchronization errors. Based on the interleaving of several single-deletion-correcting multipermutation codes, we present a construction of multipermutation codes for correcting a burst of at most t deletions with shift magnitude one for t ≥2. The proposed construction is proved with including an efficient decoding method. A calculation example is provided to validate the construction and its decoding method.

This letter presents two outage-optimal relaying schemes to improve the performance of a wireless energy harvesting system in cognitive radio networks. The performance of both schemes is then evaluated and compared by carrying out numerical simulations, and we also derive the analytic expression for the outage probability of the secondary system.

This research addresses improvements in the efficiency of spectrum utilization by defending against jamming attacks and corrupting the communications of the adversary network by executing its own jamming strategy. The proposed scheme, based on game theory, selects the best operational strategy (i.e., communications and jamming strategies) to maximize the successful communications and jamming rates of the network. Moreover, an estimation algorithm is investigated to predict the behavior of the adversary network in order to improve the efficiency of the proposed game theory-based scheme.

We propose a framework to detect lug position and orientation in robotics that is insensitive to the lug orientation, incorporating a proposed optimization based on the artificial bee colony genetic algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed optimization method outperformed traditional artificial bee colony and other meta-heuristics in the considered cases and was up to 3 times faster than the traditional approach. The proposed detection framework provided excellent performance to detect lug objects for all test cases.
